Israel’s Rebellions Reviewed

¹“Hear, O Israel: You are to cross over the Jordan today, and go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than yourself, cities great and fortified up to heaven, ²a people great and tall, the ⚓descendants of the Anakim, whom you know, and of whom you heard it said, ‘Who can stand before the descendants of Anak?’ ³Therefore understand today that the Lord your God is He who ⚓goes over before you as a ⚓consuming fire. ⚓He will destroy them and bring them down before you; ⚓so you shall drive them out and destroy them quickly, as the Lord has said to you.
⁴⚓“Do not think in your heart, after the Lord your God has cast them out before you, saying, ‘Because of my righteousness the Lord has brought me in to possess this land’; but it is⚓because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is driving them out from before you. ⁵⚓It is not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart that you go in to possess their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord your God drives them out from before you, and that He may fulfill the ⚓word which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. ⁶Therefore understand that the Lord your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness, for you are a ⚓stiff-necked people.
⁷“Remember! Do not forget how you ⚓provoked the Lord your God to wrath in the wilderness. ⚓From the day that you departed from the land of Egypt until you came to this place, you have been rebellious against the Lord. ⁸Also ⚓in Horeb you provoked the Lord to wrath, so that the Lord was angry enough with you to have destroyed you. ⁹⚓When I went up into the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant which the Lord made with you, then I stayed on the mountain forty days and ⚓forty nights. I neither ate bread nor drank water. ¹⁰⚓Then the Lord delivered to me two tablets of stone written with the finger of God, and on them were all the words which the Lord had spoken to you on the mountain from the midst of the fire ⚓in the day of the assembly. ¹¹And it came to pass, at the end of forty days and forty nights, that the Lord gave me the two tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant.
¹²“Then the Lord said to me, ⚓‘Arise, go down quickly from here, for your people whom you brought out of Egypt have acted corruptly; they have ⚓quickly turned aside from the way which I commanded them; they have made themselves a molded image.’
¹³“Furthermore ⚓the Lord spoke to me, saying, ‘I have seen this people, and indeed ⚓they are a stiff-necked people. ¹⁴⚓Let Me alone, that I may destroy them and ⚓blot out their name from under heaven; ⚓and I will make of you a nation mightier and greater than they.’
¹⁵⚓“So I turned and came down from the mountain, and ⚓the mountain burned with fire; and the two tablets of the covenant were in my two hands. ¹⁶And ⚓I looked, and behold, you had sinned against the Lord your God—had made for yourselves a molded calf! You had turned aside quickly from the way which the Lord had commanded you. ¹⁷Then I took the two tablets and threw them out of my two hands and ⚓broke them before your eyes. ¹⁸And I ⚓fell down before the Lord, as at the first, forty days and forty nights; I neither ate bread nor drank water, because of all your sin which you committed in doing wickedly in the sight of the Lord, to provoke Him to anger. ¹⁹⚓For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure with which the Lord was angry with you, to destroy you. ⚓But the Lord listened to me at that time also. ²⁰And the Lord was very angry with Aaron and would have destroyed him; so I prayed for Aaron also at the same time. ²¹Then I took your sin, the calf which you had made, and burned it with fire and crushed it and ground it very small, until it was as fine as dust; and I ⚓threw its dust into the brook that descended from the mountain.
²²“Also at ⚓Taberah and ⚓Massah and ⚓Kibroth Hattaavah you provoked the Lord to wrath. ²³Likewise, ⚓when the Lord sent you from Kadesh Barnea, saying, ‘Go up and possess the land which I have given you,’ then you rebelled against the commandment of the Lord your God, and ⚓you did not believe Him nor obey His voice. ²⁴⚓You have been rebellious against the Lord from the day that I knew you.
²⁵⚓“Thus I prostrated myself before the Lord; forty days and forty nights I kept prostrating myself, because the Lord had said He would destroy you. ²⁶Therefore I prayed to the Lord, and said: ‘O Lord God, do not destroy Your people and ⚓Your inheritance whom You have redeemed through Your greatness, whom You have brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand. ²⁷Remember Your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; do not look on the stubbornness of this people, or on their wickedness or their sin, ²⁸lest the land from which You brought us should say, “Because the Lord was not able to bring them to the land which He promised them, and because He hated them, He has brought them out to kill them in the wilderness.” ²⁹Yet they are Your people and Your inheritance, whom You brought out by Your mighty power and by Your outstretched arm.’

Dân Y-sơ-ra-ên chiến thắng nhờ ơn Chúa

¹“Hỡi Y-sơ-ra-ên hãy nghe! Hôm nay anh em sẽ vượt qua sông Giô-đanh để đánh đuổi các dân tộc đông hơn và mạnh hơn anh em, có những thành lớn và tường lũy cao ngất trời. ²Đây là giống dân khổng lồ, con cháu A-na-kim, mà anh em đã biết và đã nghe nói: ‘Ai có thể đương đầu với con cháu A-nác?’ ³Hôm nay, anh em phải biết rằng Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời của anh em sẽ đi trước anh em như một đám lửa hừng, sẽ tiêu diệt và hạ các dân nầy xuống trước mặt anh em. Anh em sẽ nhanh chóng trục xuất và tiêu diệt chúng, như Đức Giê-hô-va đã hứa.
⁴Nhưng khi Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời đã đánh đuổi chúng trước mặt anh em thì anh em đừng tự nhủ rằng: ‘Nhờ sự công chính của ta nên Đức Giê-hô-va đã đem ta vào chiếm hữu đất nầy.’ Thật ra, chính vì tội ác của các dân tộc đó mà Đức Giê-hô-va đánh đuổi chúng khỏi anh em. ⁵Không phải vì sự công chính hay lòng chính trực của anh em mà anh em được vào chiếm hữu đất đai của các dân tộc ấy; nhưng vì tội ác của chúng mà Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời sẽ trục xuất chúng khỏi anh em để làm ứng nghiệm lời hứa mà Ngài đã thề với các tổ phụ anh em là Áp-ra-ham, Y-sác và Gia-cốp. ⁶Như vậy, anh em phải biết rằng không phải nhờ sự công chính của anh em mà Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời cho anh em chiếm hữu vùng đất tốt tươi nầy đâu, vì anh em là một dân tộc cứng cổ.”

Sự cứng lòng của dân Y-sơ-ra-ên

⁷“Anh em hãy nhớ, đừng quên rằng trong hoang mạc anh em đã chọc giận Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời như thế nào. Từ ngày ra khỏi Ai Cập cho đến chốn nầy, anh em đã thường xuyên phản nghịch Đức Giê-hô-va. ⁸Tại núi Hô-rếp, anh em đã chọc giận Đức Giê-hô-va và Ngài đã giận anh em đến nỗi định tiêu diệt anh em. ⁹Khi tôi lên núi để nhận hai bảng đá trên đó Đức Giê-hô-va đã ghi bản giao ước mà Ngài đã lập với anh em, tôi đã ở lại trên núi bốn mươi ngày và bốn mươi đêm, không ăn bánh cũng chẳng uống nước.⚓ ¹⁰Đức Giê-hô-va đã trao cho tôi hai bảng đá do chính ngón tay Đức Chúa Trời viết, trên đó có đủ những lời mà Đức Giê-hô-va đã phán với anh em tại trên núi, từ đám lửa, trong ngày hội họp. ¹¹Cuối thời gian bốn mươi ngày bốn mươi đêm đó, Đức Giê-hô-va đã trao cho tôi hai bảng đá trên đó đã có bản giao ước mà Ngài đã lập với anh em. ¹²Đức Giê-hô-va phán với tôi: ‘Hãy đứng dậy, mau xuống khỏi đây vì dân mà con đem ra khỏi Ai Cập đã trở nên bại hoại. Chúng đã vội bỏ đường lối mà Ta đã truyền dạy, và đúc cho mình một hình tượng.’ ¹³Đức Giê-hô-va còn phán với tôi: ‘Ta đã thấy dân nầy thật là một dân cứng cổ! ¹⁴Cứ để mặc Ta, Ta sẽ tiêu diệt chúng và xóa tên chúng khỏi thiên hạ. Nhưng Ta sẽ làm cho con trở thành một dân tộc hùng mạnh và đông hơn dân ấy.’
¹⁵Vậy, tôi liền quay xuống núi với hai bảng đá có ghi giao ước trên tay, trong khi cả núi vẫn còn bốc lửa. ¹⁶Tôi thấy anh em đã thật sự phạm tội với Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời, anh em đã vội vàng từ bỏ đường lối mà Đức Giê-hô-va đã truyền dạy anh em, tự đúc cho mình hình tượng một con bò con. ¹⁷Tôi cầm hai bảng đá và ném xuống đất.⚓ Hai bảng đá vỡ nát thành từng mảnh trước mặt anh em.
¹⁸Sau đó, vì tội lỗi anh em đã phạm khi làm điều dữ để chọc giận Đức Giê-hô-va, tôi đã phủ phục trước mặt Ngài suốt bốn mươi ngày đêm, và như lần trước, tôi không ăn bánh cũng chẳng uống nước. ¹⁹Tôi run sợ trước cơn thịnh nộ mà Đức Giê-hô-va đã nổi lên với anh em; Ngài giận đến nỗi sẵn sàng tiêu diệt anh em. Nhưng cả lần nầy nữa, Đức Giê-hô-va đã nhậm lời tôi.⚓ ²⁰Đức Giê-hô-va cũng nổi thịnh nộ với A-rôn đến nỗi muốn giết ông, nhưng ngay lúc đó tôi cũng cầu thay cho A-rôn. ²¹Tôi đem cái sản phẩm tội lỗi của anh em, tức là tượng con bò con, ra đốt trong lửa, nghiền nát, tán nhuyễn thành bụi rồi đổ bụi ấy vào khe nước từ trên núi chảy xuống.
²²Anh em cũng đã chọc giận Đức Giê-hô-va tại Tha-bê-ra, tại Ma-sa và tại Kíp-rốt Ha-tha-va.⚓ ²³Khi sai anh em đi từ Ca-đe Ba-nê-a, Đức Giê-hô-va đã dặn: ‘Hãy đi lên chiếm hữu vùng đất mà Ta đã ban cho các ngươi,’ nhưng anh em đã chống lại mệnh lệnh của Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời, không tin cậy, cũng không vâng lời Ngài.⚓ ²⁴Từ ngày tôi biết anh em đến nay, anh em luôn phản nghịch Đức Giê-hô-va.
²⁵Vậy, tôi đã phủ phục trước mặt Đức Giê-hô-va suốt bốn mươi ngày bốn mươi đêm, vì Đức Giê-hô-va đã phán rằng Ngài quyết định tiêu diệt anh em. ²⁶Tôi đã cầu nguyện với Đức Giê-hô-va rằng: ‘Lạy Chúa Giê-hô-va, xin Chúa đừng tiêu diệt dân Chúa là cơ nghiệp của Ngài, là dân mà Chúa đã chuộc bằng sự uy nghi cao cả của Ngài, và đã đem họ ra khỏi Ai Cập bằng cánh tay quyền uy của Ngài. ²⁷Xin Chúa nhớ đến các đầy tớ Chúa là Áp-ra-ham, Y-sác và Gia-cốp mà bỏ qua cho sự cứng lòng, tính hung dữ và tội ác của dân nầy. ²⁸Nếu không, dân của xứ mà Ngài đã đem chúng con ra, sẽ nói: Vì Đức Giê-hô-va không thể đem dân ấy vào xứ mà Ngài đã hứa, và vì ghét họ nên Ngài đem họ ra và để cho họ chết trong hoang mạc. ²⁹Nhưng họ là dân Ngài, là sản nghiệp mà Ngài đã dùng quyền uy lớn lao và dang rộng cánh tay mạnh mẽ đem ra khỏi Ai Cập.’”
