David’s Last Words

¹These are the last words of David:
“The inspired utterance of David son of Jesse,
the utterance of the man exalted by the Most High,
the man anointed by the God of Jacob,
the hero of Israel’s songs:

²“The Spirit of the Lord spoke through me;
his word was on my tongue.
³The God of Israel spoke,
the Rock of Israel said to me:
‘When one rules over people in righteousness,
when he rules in the fear of God,
⁴he is like the light of morning at sunrise
on a cloudless morning,
like the brightness after rain
that brings grass from the earth.’

⁵“If my house were not right with God,
surely he would not have made with me an everlasting covenant,
arranged and secured in every part;
surely he would not bring to fruition my salvation
and grant me my every desire.
⁶But evil men are all to be cast aside like thorns,
which are not gathered with the hand.
⁷Whoever touches thorns
uses a tool of iron or the shaft of a spear;
they are burned up where they lie.”

David’s Mighty Warriors

⁸These are the names of David’s mighty warriors:
Josheb-Basshebeth,⚓ a Tahkemonite,⚓ was chief of the Three; he raised his spear against eight hundred men, whom he killed⚓ in one encounter.
⁹Next to him was Eleazar son of Dodai the Ahohite. As one of the three mighty warriors, he was with David when they taunted the Philistines gathered at Pas Dammim⚓ for battle. Then the Israelites retreated, ¹⁰but Eleazar stood his ground and struck down the Philistines till his hand grew tired and froze to the sword. The Lord brought about a great victory that day. The troops returned to Eleazar, but only to strip the dead.
¹¹Next to him was Shammah son of Agee the Hararite. When the Philistines banded together at a place where there was a field full of lentils, Israel’s troops fled from them. ¹²But Shammah took his stand in the middle of the field. He defended it and struck the Philistines down, and the Lord brought about a great victory.
¹³During harvest time, three of the thirty chief warriors came down to David at the cave of Adullam, while a band of Philistines was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim. ¹⁴At that time David was in the stronghold, and the Philistine garrison was at Bethlehem. ¹⁵David longed for water and said, “Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!” ¹⁶So the three mighty warriors broke through the Philistine lines, drew water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem and carried it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out before the Lord. ¹⁷“Far be it from me, Lord, to do this!” he said. “Is it not the blood of men who went at the risk of their lives?” And David would not drink it.
Such were the exploits of the three mighty warriors.
¹⁸Abishai the brother of Joab son of Zeruiah was chief of the Three.⚓ He raised his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed, and so he became as famous as the Three. ¹⁹Was he not held in greater honor than the Three? He became their commander, even though he was not included among them.
²⁰Benaiah son of Jehoiada, a valiant fighter from Kabzeel, performed great exploits. He struck down Moab’s two mightiest warriors. He also went down into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion. ²¹And he struck down a huge Egyptian. Although the Egyptian had a spear in his hand, Benaiah went against him with a club. He snatched the spear from the Egyptian’s hand and killed him with his own spear. ²²Such were the exploits of Benaiah son of Jehoiada; he too was as famous as the three mighty warriors. ²³He was held in greater honor than any of the Thirty, but he was not included among the Three. And David put him in charge of his bodyguard.

Elhanan son of Dodo from Bethlehem,
²⁵Shammah the Harodite,
Elika the Harodite,
²⁶Helez the Paltite,
Ira son of Ikkesh from Tekoa,
²⁷Abiezer from Anathoth,
Sibbekai⚓ the Hushathite,
²⁸Zalmon the Ahohite,
Maharai the Netophathite,
²⁹Heled⚓ son of Baanah the Netophathite,
Ithai son of Ribai from Gibeah in Benjamin,
³⁰Benaiah the Pirathonite,
Hiddai⚓ from the ravines of Gaash,
³¹Abi-Albon the Arbathite,
Azmaveth the Barhumite,
³²Eliahba the Shaalbonite,
the sons of Jashen,
Jonathan ³³son of⚓ Shammah the Hararite,
Ahiam son of Sharar⚓ the Hararite,
³⁴Eliphelet son of Ahasbai the Maakathite,
Eliam son of Ahithophel the Gilonite,
³⁵Hezro the Carmelite,
Paarai the Arbite,
³⁶Igal son of Nathan from Zobah,
the son of Hagri,⚓
³⁷Zelek the Ammonite,
Naharai the Beerothite, the armor-bearer of Joab son of Zeruiah,
³⁸Ira the Ithrite,

Người được Đấng Tối Cao nâng lên bậc vĩ đại lên tiếng.
Người là vua được Thượng Đế của Gia-cốp chỉ định;
người là ca sĩ dịu dàng trong Ít-ra-en⚓:
²“Thần linh CHÚA phán qua ta,
đặt lời Ngài trên lưỡi ta.
³Thượng Đế của Ít-ra-en phán;
Khối Đá của Ít-ra-en bảo ta:
Ai cai trị công minh trên dân ta,
ai cai trị trong sự kính sợ Thượng Đế,
⁴giống như ánh sáng bình minh,
như buổi sáng trời trong, quang đãng.
Người như tia sáng mặt trời sau cơn mưa,
khiến cỏ non mọc lên từ đất.
⁵Thượng Đế chăm nom gia đình ta như thế nầy.
Ngài lập giao ước đời đời với ta, giao ước phải lẽ và vững chắc mọi mặt.⚓
Ngài sẽ hoàn tất sự cứu rỗi cho ta, thỏa mãn mọi ước vọng ta.
⁶Nhưng những kẻ ác sẽ bị ném đi
như gai gốc
không ai dám nắm trong tay.
⁷Không ai đám đụng đến
nếu không dùng kềm sắt hay kẹp gỗ.
Chúng sẽ bị ném vào lửa và cháy phừng trong đó.”

Ba chiến sĩ anh dũng

⁸Sau đây là tên của những chiến sĩ của Đa-vít:
Giô-sép Bát-sê-bết, người Ta-kê-mô-nít⚓ là trưởng toán đặc biệt của vua⚓. Trong một cuộc chạm trán anh ta giết tám trăm người.⚓
⁹Kế đến là Ê-lê-a-xa, con Đô-đai⚓, người A-hô-hít. Ê-lê-a-xa là một trong ba chiến sĩ đi với Đa-vít khi ông thách thức người Phi-li-tin. Người Phi-li-tin dàn trận ra còn quân Ít-ra-en rút lui. ¹⁰Nhưng Ê-lê-a-xa ở lại chiến đấu chống dân Phi-li-tin cho đến khi tay rã rời dính chặt vào gươm. Trong ngày đó CHÚA ban chiến thắng lớn cho dân Ít-ra-en. Quân sĩ quay lại sau khi Ê-lê-a-xa đã thắng để cướp lấy vũ khí và áo giáp quân thù.
¹¹Kế đến là Sam-ma, con A-ghi, người Ha-ra-rít. Quân Phi-li-tin đến đánh nhau trong vườn rau⚓. Quân Ít-ra-en chạy trốn khỏi người Phi-li-tin, ¹²Nhưng Sam-ma đứng giữa ruộng đánh nhau dành miếng ruộng đó và giết người Phi-li-tin. CHÚA ban đắc thắng lớn.
¹³Có lần, ba trong số ba mươi chiến sĩ cận vệ⚓ Đa-vít đi xuống gặp ông ở hang A-đu-lam nhằm lúc mùa gặt. Người Phi-li-tin đóng quân trong thung lũng Rê-pha-im⚓. ¹⁴Lúc đó Đa-vít đang ở trong mật khu, và một số người Phi-li-tin đang ở Bết-lê-hem.
¹⁵Đa-vít rất muốn uống nước. Ông nói, “Ôi, ước gì có ai lấy nước cho ta nơi giếng gần cổng thành Bết-lê-hem!” ¹⁶Vậy ba chiến sĩ⚓ đó xông qua hàng rào quân Phi-li-tin và lấy nước nơi giếng gần cổng thành Bết-lê-hem. Khi họ mang nước về cho Đa-vít thì ông không chịu uống. Ông đổ nước ra trước mặt CHÚA ¹⁷và nói rằng, “Nguyện CHÚA chớ để tôi uống nước nầy! Như thế chẳng khác nào uống máu của những người vì đi lấy nước mà liều chết!” Đa-vít không chịu uống nước đó. Đó là những hành vi dũng cảm mà ba chiến sĩ đó làm.

Các chiến sĩ anh dũng khác

¹⁸A-bi-sai, em Giô-áp, con Xê-ru-gia chỉ huy đám cận vệ. A-bi-sai dùng giáo đánh giết ba trăm lính. Ông nổi danh như ba người kia ¹⁹nhưng được tôn trọng hơn họ. Ông làm chỉ huy họ nhưng không thuộc trong đám họ.
²⁰Bê-na-gia, con Giê-hô-gia-đa từ Cáp-xi-ên là một chiến sĩ gan dạ⚓ đã thực hiện nhiều kỳ công. Ông giết hai trong số những lính thiện chiến nhất của Mô-áp. Ông cũng đi xuống hố và giết một con sư tử trong lúc tuyết đang rơi. ²¹Bê-na-gia cũng giết một người Ai-cập đang cầm cây giáo trong tay. Bê-na-gia chỉ có một cây dùi cui nhưng ông giựt cây giáo khỏi tay người Ai-cập và giết hắn bằng chính cây giáo của hắn. ²²Đó là những điều Bê-na-gia, con trai Giê-hô-gia-đa làm. Ông cũng nổi danh như ba người kia. ²³Ông nhận nhiều vinh dự hơn ba mươi người kia nhưng ông không thuộc vào nhóm Ba Người thân cận. Đa-vít cử ông làm chỉ huy toán hộ vệ mình.

²⁴Các người sau đây thuộc vào nhóm Ba Mươi người: A-sa-ên, em Giô-áp; Ên-ha-nan, con Đô-đô ở Bết-lê-hem; ²⁵Sam-ma người Ha-rô-đít; Ê-li-ca người Ha-rô-đít; ²⁶Hê-lê người Ban-thít; Y-ra, con Ích-kê miền Tê-cô-a; ²⁷A-bi-ê-xe người A-na-thốt; Mê-bun-nai người Hu-sa-thít; ²⁸Xanh-môn, người A-lô-hít; Ma-ha-rai người Nê-tô-pha-thít; ²⁹Hê-lết con Ba-a-na, người Nê-tô-pha-thít; Y-tai con Ri-bai miền Ghi-bê-a thuộc xứ Bên-gia-min; ³⁰Bê-na-gia người Bi-ra-thô-nít; Hích-đai từ vùng hố của Ga-ách; ³¹A-bi Anh-bôn người Ác-ba-thít; Ách-ma-vết người Ba-hu-mít; ³²Ê-li-a-ba người Sanh-bô-nít; các con trai của Gia-sen; Giô-na-than ³³con trai của Sam-ma người Ha-ra-rít; A-hi-am con Sa-ra người Ha-ra-rít; ³⁴Ê-li-phê-lết con A-hát-bai, người Ma-a-ca-thít; Ê-li-am con A-hi-tô-phên, người Ghi-lôn; ³⁵Hết-rô người Cạt-mên; Ba-a-rai người Ạc-bít; ³⁶Y-ganh con Na-than ở Xô-ba; con của Hát-ri; ³⁷Xê-léc người Am-môn; Na-ha-rai người Bê-e-rô-thít, vác áo giáp cho Giô-áp, con trai Xê-ru-gia; ³⁸Y-ra người Ít-rít; Ga-rép người Ít-rít, ³⁹và U-ri người Hê-tít. Tất cả là ba mươi bảy người.
