A Letter to the Exiles

¹This is the text of the letter that the prophet Jeremiah sent from Jerusalem to the surviving elders among the exiles and to the priests, the prophets and all the other people Nebuchadnezzar had carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon. ²(This was after King Jehoiachin⚓ and the queen mother, the court officials and the leaders of Judah and Jerusalem, the skilled workers and the artisans had gone into exile from Jerusalem.) ³He entrusted the letter to Elasah son of Shaphan and to Gemariah son of Hilkiah, whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent to King Nebuchadnezzar in Babylon. It said:
⁴This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says to all those I carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: ⁵“Build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce. ⁶Marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Increase in number there; do not decrease. ⁷Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” ⁸Yes, this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “Do not let the prophets and diviners among you deceive you. Do not listen to the dreams you encourage them to have. ⁹They are prophesying lies to you in my name. I have not sent them,” declares the Lord.
¹⁰This is what the Lord says: “When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will come to you and fulfill my good promise to bring you back to this place. ¹¹For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. ¹²Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. ¹³You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. ¹⁴I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back from captivity.⚓ I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile.”
¹⁵You may say, “The Lord has raised up prophets for us in Babylon,” ¹⁶but this is what the Lord says about the king who sits on David’s throne and all the people who remain in this city, your fellow citizens who did not go with you into exile— ¹⁷yes, this is what the Lord Almighty says: “I will send the sword, famine and plague against them and I will make them like figs that are so bad they cannot be eaten. ¹⁸I will pursue them with the sword, famine and plague and will make them abhorrent to all the kingdoms of the earth, a curse⚓ and an object of horror, of scorn and reproach, among all the nations where I drive them. ¹⁹For they have not listened to my words,” declares the Lord, “words that I sent to them again and again by my servants the prophets. And you exiles have not listened either,” declares the Lord.
²⁰Therefore, hear the word of the Lord, all you exiles whom I have sent away from Jerusalem to Babylon. ²¹This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says about Ahab son of Kolaiah and Zedekiah son of Maaseiah, who are prophesying lies to you in my name: “I will deliver them into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he will put them to death before your very eyes. ²²Because of them, all the exiles from Judah who are in Babylon will use this curse: ‘May the Lord treat you like Zedekiah and Ahab, whom the king of Babylon burned in the fire.’ ²³For they have done outrageous things in Israel; they have committed adultery with their neighbors’ wives, and in my name they have uttered lies—which I did not authorize. I know it and am a witness to it,” declares the Lord.

Message to Shemaiah

²⁴Tell Shemaiah the Nehelamite, ²⁵“This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: You sent letters in your own name to all the people in Jerusalem, to the priest Zephaniah son of Maaseiah, and to all the other priests. You said to Zephaniah, ²⁶‘The Lord has appointed you priest in place of Jehoiada to be in charge of the house of the Lord; you should put any maniac who acts like a prophet into the stocks and neck-irons. ²⁷So why have you not reprimanded Jeremiah from Anathoth, who poses as a prophet among you? ²⁸He has sent this message to us in Babylon: It will be a long time. Therefore build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce.’ ”
²⁹Zephaniah the priest, however, read the letter to Jeremiah the prophet. ³⁰Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: ³¹“Send this message to all the exiles: ‘This is what the Lord says about Shemaiah the Nehelamite: Because Shemaiah has prophesied to you, even though I did not send him, and has persuaded you to trust in lies, ³²this is what the Lord says: I will surely punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite and his descendants. He will have no one left among this people, nor will he see the good things I will do for my people, declares the Lord, because he has preached rebellion against me.’ ”

¹Đây là nội dung bức thư tiên tri Giê-rê-mi gửi từ Giê-ru-sa-lem đến các cấp lãnh đạo Giu-đa,⚓ các thấy tế lễ, các tiên tri và toàn thể dân chúng Giu-đa đã bị Nê-bu-cát-nết-sa bắt tại Giê-ru-sa-lem và đày qua xứ Ba-by-luân. ²(Lúc ấy, vua Giê-cô-nia,⚓ bà thái hậu; các thái giám, các quan lớn và các thợ chuyên môn nhiều ngành kỷ nghệ đã bị đày đi khỏi thủ đô.) ³Thư này do Ê-la-sa và Ghê-ma-ria chuyển đạt Ê-la-sa, con của Sa-phan và Ghê-ma-ria, con của Hinh-kia là sứ thần vua Sê-đi-kia cử đến triều đình Nê-bu-cát-nết-sa, vua Ba-by-luân. Thư rằng: ⁴“Chúa Hằng Hữu Toàn năng, Chân Thân của Y-sơ-ra-ên, phán bảo tất cả nhũng người từ Giê-ru-sa-lem bị lưu đày qua xứ Ba-by-luân theo lệnh Ta; ⁵Hãy xây nhà mà ở! Hãy trồng vườn cây mà ăn trái! ⁶Hãy cưới vợ, sinh con cái! Hãy cho con cái mình cưới vợ, lấy chồng để sinh con đẻ cháu, gia đình hãy sinh sôi nẩy nở thật nhiều.⚓ ⁷Hãy tìm cầu hòa bình cho thành phố Ta đã sai các ngươi đến, và cầu thay cho dân chúng trong thành vì sự hòa bình của các ngươi tùy thuộc nơi sự hòa bình trong thành phố ấy.
⁸Chúa Hằng Hữu Toàn năng, Chân Thần của Y-sơ-ra-ên, phán: Đừng để các tiên tri giả, các thầy bói giữa các ngươi lừa gạt các ngươi; cũng đừng nghe những 'điềm báo mộng' chúng nó tưởng tượng ra. ⁹Vì họ mạo danh Ta nói tiên tri giả dối để lừa gạt các ngươi. Ta không bao giờ sai phái họ, Chúa phán vậy.
¹⁰Chúa dạy: "Một khi thời hạn 70 năm dành cho Ba-by-luân chấm dứt, Ta sẽ thăm viếng các ngươi, thực hiện mọi điều Ta đã hứa và đem các ngươi trở về quê cha đất tổ. ¹¹Vì Ta biết chương trình Ta hoạch định cho các ngươi là chương trình hòa bình thịnh vượng, không phải là tai họa diệt vong. Ta kiến tạo cho các ngươi một tương lai sáng sủa, một niềm hy vọng vững vàng. ¹²Lúc ấy, các ngươi sẽ cầu khẩn Ta, tìm đến với Ta và nài xin Ta, lúc ấy, Ta mới nhậm lời. ¹³Các ngươi sẽ tìm kiếm Ta và gặp được khi các ngươi tìm kiếm Ta hết lòng. ¹⁴Chúa phán: Các ngươi sẽ tìm gặp Ta, và Ta sẽ khôi phục vận nước các ngươi, tập họp các ngươi từ tất cả các nước, các xứ mà Ta đã đày các ngươi đến rồi đem các ngươi về quê cha đất tổ.
¹⁵Hiện nay, các ngươi công nhận các tiên tri giả tại Ba-by-luân mặc dù Ta chẳng bao giờ sai chúng nó, ^16,17nên Ta sẽ cho chiến tranh, đói kém và dịch hạch giết hại những người còn sống sót tại Giê-ru-sa-lem tức là bà con quyến thuộc các ngươi, và luôn cả vua đang trị vì trên ngai Đa-vít. Họ sẽ thành cặn bã của xã hội, vô dụng cho quê hương tổ quốc.⚓ ¹⁸Ta sẽ phân tán chúng khắp thế giới và mỗi dân tộc sẽ nguyền rủa, bĩu môi chế nhạo chúng, ¹⁹vì chúng không chịu nghe lời Ta liên tục truyền báo qua các tiên tri Ta.
²⁰Vì thế, các lưu dân ở Ba-by-luân, hãy nghe lời Chúa! ²¹Chúa Hằng Hữu Toàn năng, Chân Thần của Y-sơ-ra-ên phán về các tiên tri giả A-háp (con trai của Cơ-lai-gia) và Sê-đê-kia (con của Ma-a-sê-gia) là những kẻ nhạo danh Ta nói tiên tri giả dối lừa bịp dân Ta: Này, Ta đang nộp chúng cho Nê-bu-cát-nết-sa. Chúng sẽ bị xử tử ngay trước mắt các ngươi. ²²Cái chết kinh rợn của họ sẽ đi vào tục ngữ, đến nỗi về sau, mỗi khi người Ta nguyền rủa nhau sẽ dùng câu tục ngữ: "Câu cho mày sẽ như Sê- đê-kia và A-háp đã bị vua Ba-by-luân thiêu chết trong lò lửa!" ²³Hai người này phạm tội ghê tởm; đã thông dâm với vợ người lân cận, lại còn lên mặt dạy đời, mạo danh Chúa mà nói tiên tri giả dối. Ta biết cả vì Ta đã thấy tất cả hành vi ám muội của họ, Chúa Hằng Hữu phán vậy."
²⁴Con hãy bảo Sê-ma-gia ở Nê-hê-lam: ²⁵“Chúa Hằng Hữu Toàn năng, Chân Thần của Y-sơ-ra-ên phán: Vì ngươi đã tự ý viết thư cho dân chúng Giê-ru-sa-lem, cho Sê- pha-nia (con của thầy tế lễ Ma-a-sê-gia) và tất cả các thầy tế lễ, mạo nhận rằng: ²⁶Chúa Hằng Hữu đã lập ngươi làm thầy tế lễ thay thế Giê-hô-gia-đa, làm tổng giám đốc Đền thờ Chúa để kiểm soát trừng trị bọn tiên tri ngông cuồng và đe dọa sẽ gông cùm các tiên tri ấy. ²⁷Thế thì sao ngươi không khiển trách Giê-rê-mi, người A-na-tốt, là người tiên tri đã phản đối ngươi. ²⁸Vì Giê-rê-mi có gửi thư cho các lưu dân ở Ba-by-luân, bảo rằng: Cuộc lưu đày còn lâu dài! Hãy xây nhà mà ở, trồng vườn cây mà ăn trái.
²⁹Thầy tế lễ Sô-pha-nia đọc thư của Sê- ma-gia cho tiên tri Giê-rê-mi nghe. ³⁰Chúa liền phán bảo Giê-rê-mi: ³¹“Con hãy viết thư cho tất cả các lưu dân Do-thái tại Ba-by-luân rằng: 'Chúa dạy: Vì Sê-ma-gia, người Nê-hê-lam, dám mạo danh Ta mà nói tiên tri giả dối để lừa gạt các ngươi mặc dù Ta chưa từng sai phái nó. ³²Nên Ta sẽ hình phạt nó và gia đình nó. Con cháu nó không ai được trông thấy phúc lành Ta dành cho dân Ta. Nó dám xúi giục các ngươi nổi loạn chống Ta nên phải chịu hình phạt."
