Jonah Preaches at Nineveh
1Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying,
2“Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the message that I tell you.”
3So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, a three-day journey in extent.
4And Jonah began to enter the city on the first day’s walk. Then ⚓he cried out and said, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!”
The People of Nineveh Believe
5So the ⚓people of Nineveh believed God, proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them.
6Then word came to the king of Nineveh; and he arose from his throne and laid aside his robe, covered himself with sackcloth ⚓and sat in ashes.
7⚓And he caused it to be proclaimed and published throughout Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying,
Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything; do not let them eat, or drink water.
8But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily to God; yes, ⚓let every one turn from his evil way and from ⚓the violence that is in his hands.
9⚓Who can tell if God will turn and relent, and turn away from His fierce anger, so that we may not perish?
10⚓Then God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God relented from the disaster that He had said He would bring upon them, and He did not do it.

Thượng-Đế gọi, Giô-na vâng lời
1Lời CHÚA lại phán cùng Giô-na lần nữa,
2“Hãy dậy đi xuống thành lớn Ni-ni-ve, giảng cho nó như ta đã bảo.”
3Vậy Giô-na vâng lời CHÚA, lên đường đi đến Ni-ni-ve. Thành phố đó rất lớn, phải mất ba ngày mới băng qua hết thành.
4Sau khi Giô-na vào thành và đi được một ngày, ông giảng cho dân chúng như sau, “Bốn mươi ngày nữa, Ni-ni-ve sẽ bị tiêu diệt!”
5Dân chúng Ni-ni-ve tin Thượng-Đế. Họ tuyên bố cữ ăn, mặc vải sô để tỏ sự buồn thảm. Tất cả dân trong thành đều làm như thế, từ sang đến hèn.
6Khi vua Ni-ni-ve nghe tin ấy cũng đứng dậy khỏi ngai, cởi áo bào, mặc vải sô và ngồi trong tro⚓ để tỏ lòng buồn bực.
7Vua ra chỉ thị nầy cho cả thành Ni-ni-ve:“Đây là lệnh vua và các quần thần:
Không ai được nếm món gì, từ người cho đến thú vật. Không ai được ăn uống gì cả.
8Nhưng từ người đến thú vật phải mặc vải sô, kêu xin lớn tiếng cùng Thượng-Đế. Ai nấy phải từ bỏ nếp sống gian ác và làm hại người khác.
9Biết đâu Thượng Đế sẽ đổi ý. Ngài sẽ nguôi giận để chúng ta sẽ khỏi chết.”
10Khi Thượng-Đế thấy điều họ làm, là từ bỏ việc ác, thì Ngài đổi ý không thực hiện điều Ngài đã cảnh cáo và không trừng phạt họ.
