Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream

¹Now in the second year of Nebuchadnezzar’s reign, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams; ⚓and his spirit was so troubled that ⚓his sleep left him. ²⚓Then the king gave the command to call the magicians, the astrologers, the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans to tell the king his dreams. So they came and stood before the king. ³And the king said to them, “I have had a dream, and my spirit is anxious to know the dream.”
⁴Then the Chaldeans spoke to the king in Aramaic, ⚓“O king, live forever! Tell your servants the dream, and we will give the interpretation.”
⁵The king answered and said to the Chaldeans, “My decision is firm: if you do not make known the dream to me, and its interpretation, you shall be ⚓cut in pieces, and your houses shall be made an ash heap. ⁶⚓However, if you tell the dream and its interpretation, you shall receive from me gifts, rewards, and great honor. Therefore tell me the dream and its interpretation.”
⁷They answered again and said, “Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will give its interpretation.”
⁸The king answered and said, “I know for certain that you would gain time, because you see that my decision is firm: ⁹if you do not make known the dream to me, there is only one decree for you! For you have agreed to speak lying and corrupt words before me till the time has changed. Therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that you can give me its interpretation.”
¹⁰The Chaldeans answered the king, and said, “There is not a man on earth who can tell the king’s matter; therefore no king, lord, or ruler has ever asked such things of any magician, astrologer, or Chaldean. ¹¹It is a difficult thing that the king requests, and there is no other who can tell it to the king ⚓except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.”
¹²For this reason the king was angry and very furious, and gave the command to destroy all the wise men of Babylon. ¹³So the decree went out, and they began killing the wise men; and they sought ⚓Daniel and his companions, to kill them.

God Reveals Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream

¹⁴Then with counsel and wisdom Daniel answered Arioch, the captain of the king’s guard, who had gone out to kill the wise men of Babylon; ¹⁵he answered and said to Arioch the king’s captain, “Why is the decree from the king so urgent?” Then Arioch made the decision known to Daniel.
¹⁶So Daniel went in and asked the king to give him time, that he might tell the king the interpretation. ¹⁷Then Daniel went to his house, and made the decision known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions, ¹⁸⚓that they might seek mercies from the God of heaven concerning this secret, so that Daniel and his companions might not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. ¹⁹Then the secret was revealed to Daniel ⚓in a night vision. So Daniel blessed the God of heaven.
²⁰Daniel answered and said:
⚓“Blessed be the name of God forever and ever,
⚓For wisdom and might are His.
²¹And He changes ⚓the times and the seasons;
⚓He removes kings and raises up kings;
⚓He gives wisdom to the wise
And knowledge to those who have understanding.
²²⚓He reveals deep and secret things;
⚓He knows what is in the darkness,
And ⚓light dwells with Him.
²³“I thank You and praise You,
O God of my fathers;
You have given me wisdom and might,
And have now made known to me what we ⚓asked of You,
For You have made known to us the king’s demand.”

Daniel Explains the Dream

²⁴Therefore Daniel went to Arioch, whom the king had appointed to destroy the wise men of Babylon. He went and said thus to him: “Do not destroy the wise men of Babylon; take me before the king, and I will tell the king the interpretation.”
²⁵Then Arioch quickly brought Daniel before the king, and said thus to him, “I have found a man of the captives of Judah, who will make known to the king the interpretation.”
²⁶The king answered and said to Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, “Are you able to make known to me the dream which I have seen, and its interpretation?”
²⁷Daniel answered in the presence of the king, and said, “The secret which the king has demanded, the wise men, the astrologers, the magicians, and the soothsayers cannot declare to the king. ²⁸⚓But there is a God in heaven who reveals secrets, and He has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar ⚓what will be in the latter days. Your dream, and the visions of your head upon your bed, were these: ²⁹As for you, O king, thoughts came to your mind while on your bed, about what would come to pass after this; ⚓and He who reveals secrets has made known to you what will be. ³⁰⚓But as for me, this secret has not been revealed to me because I have more wisdom than anyone living, but for our sakes who make known the interpretation to the king, ⚓and that you may know the thoughts of your heart.
³¹“You, O king, were watching; and behold, a great image! This great image, whose splendor was excellent, stood before you; and its form was awesome. ³²⚓This image’s head was of fine gold, its chest and arms of silver, its belly and thighs of bronze, ³³its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly of clay. ³⁴You watched while a stone was cut out ⚓without hands, which struck the image on its feet of iron and clay, and broke them in pieces. ³⁵⚓Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold were crushed together, and became ⚓like chaff from the summer threshing floors; the wind carried them away so that ⚓no trace of them was found. And the stone that struck the image ⚓became a great mountain ⚓and filled the whole earth.
³⁶“This is the dream. Now we will tell the interpretation of it before the king. ³⁷⚓You, O king, are a king of kings. ⚓For the God of heaven has given you a kingdom, power, strength, and glory; ³⁸⚓and wherever the children of men dwell, or the beasts of the field and the birds of the heaven, He has given them into your hand, and has made you ruler over them all—⚓you are this head of gold. ³⁹But after you shall arise ⚓another kingdom ⚓inferior to yours; then another, a third kingdom of bronze, which shall rule over all the earth. ⁴⁰And ⚓the fourth kingdom shall be as strong as iron, inasmuch as iron breaks in pieces and shatters everything; and like iron that crushes, that kingdom will break in pieces and crush all the others. ⁴¹Whereas you saw the feet and toes, partly of potter’s clay and partly of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; yet the strength of the iron shall be in it, just as you saw the iron mixed with ceramic clay. ⁴²And as the toes of the feet were partly of iron and partly of clay, ⚓so the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly fragile. ⁴³As you saw iron mixed with ceramic clay, they will mingle with the seed of men; but they will not adhere to one another, just as iron does not mix with clay. ⁴⁴And in the days of these kings ⚓the God of heaven will set up a kingdom ⚓which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; ⚓it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever. ⁴⁵⚓Inasmuch as you saw that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold—the great God has made known to the king what will come to pass after this. The dream is certain, and its interpretation is sure.”

Daniel and His Friends Promoted

⁴⁶⚓Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell on his face, prostrate before Daniel, and commanded that they should present an offering ⚓and incense to him. ⁴⁷The king answered Daniel, and said, “Truly ⚓your God is the God of ⚓gods, the Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, since you could reveal this secret.” ⁴⁸⚓Then the king promoted Daniel ⚓and gave him many great gifts; and he made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon, and ⚓chief administrator over all the wise men of Babylon. ⁴⁹Also Daniel petitioned the king, ⚓and he set Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego over the affairs of the province of Babylon; but Daniel ⚓sat in the gate of the king.

Chiêm Bao Thứ Nhất Của Nê-bu-cát-nết-sa

¹Năm thứ hai triều vua Nê-bu-cát-nết-sa, vua thấy chiêm bao khiến tinh thần vua bối rối đến nỗi mất giấc ngủ. ²Vì thế, vua ra lệnh triệu tập các pháp sư, thuật sĩ, thầy phù thủy, và người Canh-đê, để họ thuật lại cho vua nghe chiêm bao của vua. Khi họ đến chầu trước mặt vua, ³vua phán: “Ta thấy chiêm bao, và tinh thần ta bối rối muốn biết chiêm bao ấy có nghĩa gì.”
⁴Những người Canh-đê tâu bằng tiếng A-ram: “Hoàng đế vạn tuế! Xin bệ hạ thuật lại chiêm bao rồi chúng tôi sẽ giải thích ý nghĩa.”
⁵Vua đáp: “Lệnh ta đã công bố. Nếu các ngươi không thuật lại chiêm bao và giải thích ý nghĩa cho rõ, thân các ngươi sẽ bị lăng trì, nhà cửa các ngươi sẽ bị tịch thu.⚓ ⁶Còn nếu các ngươi cho ta biết chiêm bao và giải thích ý nghĩa, ta sẽ ban thưởng nhiều và vinh dự lớn lao. Vậy các ngươi hãy thuật lại chiêm bao và giải thích ý nghĩa ngay đi!”
⁷Họ lại tâu một lần nữa: “Cúi xin bệ hạ cho bề tôi biết chiêm bao, rồi chúng tôi xin giải thích ý nghĩa.”
⁸Vua đáp: “Bây giờ ta biết rõ ràng các ngươi chỉ tìm cách trì hoãn! Vì các ngươi nhận thức lệnh ta đã công bố: ⁹nếu các ngươi không cho ta biết chiêm bao, chỉ có một hình phạt chung cho tất cả các ngươi. Các ngươi đã toa rập với nhau đem lời dối trá gạt gẫm ta cho đến khi tình hình thay đổi. Vậy bây giờ hãy thuật chiêm bao cho ta, rồi ta mới biết các ngươi có khả năng giải nghĩa chiêm bao.”
¹⁰Những người Canh-đê tâu: “Không một ai trên thế gian này có khả năng bầy tỏ điều bệ hạ yêu cầu. Chưa hề có một vua vĩ đại nào hoặc quyền uy đến đâu, ra lệnh cho bất cứ một pháp sư, thuật sĩ, hoặc người Canh-đê nào làm việc ấy. ¹¹Việc bệ hạ đòi khó quá, không ai có thể thực hiện được, ngoại trừ các vị thần linh, nhưng các vị ấy không sống giữa loài người phàm tục.”
¹²Nghe vậy, vua nổi giận lôi đình, truyền lệnh xử tử tất cả các nhà thông thái Ba-by-lôn kia.
¹³Lệnh xử tử các nhà thông thái vừa ban hành, người ta đi tìm Đa-ni-ên và các bạn của chàng để xử tử luôn một thể. ¹⁴Nhưng Đa-ni-ên khôn khéo tiếp xúc với A-ri-óc, chỉ huy trưởng đoàn vệ binh hoàng cung, đang khi ông này trên đường thi hành bản án xử tử các nhà thông thái Ba-by-lôn. ¹⁵Đa-ni-ên hỏi A-ri-óc: “Thưa quan, tại sao đức vua ra lệnh khắc nghiệt như vậy?” Sau khi A-ri-óc thuật lại đầu đuôi câu chuyện, ¹⁶Đa-ni-ên liền vào chầu vua, xin vua cho mình thêm một thời hạn nữa để giải nghĩa chiêm bao cho vua.
¹⁷Khi Đa-ni-ên về nhà, trình bầy vấn đề cho các bạn Ha-na-nia, Mi-sa-ên, và A-xa-ria biết, ¹⁸và yêu cầu họ nài xin Đức Chúa Trời thương xót bầy tỏ điều huyền nhiệm này, để Đa-ni-ên và các bạn, cùng với các nhà thông thái khác ở Ba-by-lôn khỏi phải chết. ¹⁹Ngay đêm ấy, Chúa bầy tỏ cho Đa-ni-ên biết điều huyền nhiệm ấy trong một khải tượng. Và Đa-ni-ên ca ngợi Đức Chúa trên trời. ²⁰Đa-ni-ên nói:
“Chúc tụng danh Đức Chúa Trời đời đời mãi mãi,
Vì sự khôn ngoan và quyền năng đều thuộc về Ngài!
²¹Chính Ngài thay đổi thời kỳ và mùa tiết,
Phế và lập các vua.
Sự khôn ngoan của người khôn ngoan là do Ngài ban,
Và tri thức của người thông sáng cũng đến từ Ngài.
²²Chính Ngài bầy tỏ những điều sâu xa kín nhiệm,
Ngài biết mọi sự xảy ra trong tối tăm,
Vì Ngài là nguồn sáng.
²³Lạy Chúa là Đức Chúa Trời của tổ phụ con, con cảm tạ và ca ngợi Ngài,
Vì Ngài ban cho con sự khôn ngoan và quyền năng,
Vì bây giờ Ngài đã bầy tỏ cho con điều chúng con cầu xin,
Ngài cho chúng con biết mối lo âu của vua.”

Đa-ni-ên Giải Chiêm Bao Cho Vua

²⁴Sau đó, Đa-ni-ên đến gặp quan A-ri-óc, là người vua chỉ định thi hành bản án xử tử các nhà thông thái Ba-by-lôn. Đa-ni-ên thưa với A-ri-óc: “Xin quan đừng xử tử các nhà thông thái Ba-by-lôn. Xin quan đưa tôi vào triều, tôi sẽ tâu đức vua ý nghĩa điềm chiêm bao.”
²⁵A-ri-óc vội vã đưa Đa-ni-ên vào triều và tâu: “Muôn tâu bệ hạ, tôi vừa tìm được một thanh niên trong vòng các phu tù Giu-đa. Anh ta sẽ tâu trình bệ hạ ý nghĩa điềm chiêm bao.”
²⁶Vua hỏi Đa-ni-ên, cũng gọi là Bên-tơ-sát-xa: “Ngươi có thật sự đủ khả năng cho ta biết điềm chiêm bao ta thấy và ý nghĩa của nó không?”
²⁷Đa-ni-ên tâu: “Tâu bệ hạ, điều huyền nhiệm mà bệ hạ hỏi, thật sự không một nhà thông thái, thuật sĩ, pháp sư, hoặc chiêm tinh nào có khả năng giải thích cho bệ hạ. ²⁸Tuy nhiên, có Đức Chúa Trời trên trời, Ngài giải bầy điều huyền nhiệm. Ngài cho bệ hạ biết việc gì sẽ xảy ra trong những ngày cuối cùng. Đây là chiêm bao, là khải tượng trong tâm trí bệ hạ đang khi bệ hạ ngủ trên giường:
²⁹Muôn tâu bệ hạ, khi bệ hạ ngủ trên giường, bệ hạ có những tư tưởng về những việc sẽ xảy ra sau này; và Đấng tiết lộ những điều huyền nhiệm đã tỏ cho bệ hạ biết việc gì sẽ xảy ra. ³⁰Về phần tôi, Đức Chúa Trời đã bầy tỏ điều huyền nhiệm này cho tôi không phải vì tôi khôn ngoan hơn người, nhưng để trình bày ý nghĩa chiêm bao cho bệ hạ và giúp bệ hạ thấu hiểu các tư tưởng trong lòng mình.
³¹Muôn tâu, bệ hạ đang nhìn, thì kìa, một pho tượng lớn xuất hiện. Pho tượng này đứng trước mặt bệ hạ, khổng lồ và sáng chói lạ thường, nhưng hình thù trông thật kinh khiếp. ³²Đầu tượng bằng vàng ròng, ngực và cánh tay bằng bạc, bụng và hông bằng đồng, ³³đùi và ống chân bằng sắt, bàn chân nửa bằng sắt, nửa bằng sành. ³⁴Khi bệ hạ đang nhìn, thì một tảng đá, không do tay người đục ra, đập vào hai⚓ bàn chân nửa bằng sắt nửa bằng sành của pho tượng, khiến chúng bể tan tành. ³⁵Ngay lúc đó, sắt, sành, đồng, bạc và vàng đều bị nghiền nát như trấu trên sân đạp lúa mùa hè, và bị gió đùa đi mất tăm. Nhưng tảng đá đập bể pho tượng biến thành một ngọn núi lớn, đầy dẫy khắp địa cầu.
³⁶Đó là chiêm bao bệ hạ đã thấy. Bây giờ chúng tôi xin trình bầy ý nghĩa. ³⁷Muôn tâu, bệ hạ là vua vĩ đại nhất trong các vua! Chúa trên trời đã ban cho bệ hạ đế quốc, lực lượng, uy quyền, và vinh quang. ³⁸Ngài ban cho bệ hạ quyền cai trị tất cả mọi loài ở khắp mọi nơi, từ loài người đến thú rừng, đến chim trời. Bệ hạ chính là cái đầu bằng vàng.
³⁹Theo sau bệ hạ, một đế quốc khác sẽ nổi lên, thua kém đế quốc của bệ hạ, rồi sau đó, một đế quốc thứ ba, bằng đồng, sẽ cai trị cả thế giới. ⁴⁰Kế đó, một đế quốc thứ tư mạnh như sắt, vì sắt đập bể và nghiền nát mọi vật. Y như sắt đập tan mọi vật, đế quốc này sẽ đập tan và nghiền nát mọi đế quốc trước. ⁴¹Như bệ hạ đã thấy các bàn chân và ngón chân nửa bằng sành của thợ gốm, nửa bằng sắt, đế quốc này sẽ bị phân chia, nhưng vẫn còn phần nào sức mạnh của sắt, vì như bệ hạ thấy sắt pha sành. ⁴²Còn các ngón chân nửa bằng sắt, nữa bằng sành, có nghĩa là đế quốc này có phần mạnh cũng có phần yếu. ⁴³Như bệ hạ thấy sắt pha sành, các dân trong đế quốc sẽ sống lẫn lộn⚓ với nhau, nhưng vẫn không kết hợp được, y như sắt không thể nào kết dính với sành.
⁴⁴Trong đời các vua chúa ấy, Chúa trên trời sẽ thiết lập một vương quốc đời đời không bao giờ sụp đổ, và không hề bị một dân tộc nào khác tước đoạt chủ quyền. Vương quốc này sẽ nghiền nát và tiêu diệt tất cả các vương quốc khác trong khi chính nó sẽ trường tồn mãi mãi, ⁴⁵y như bệ hạ thấy tảng đá không do tay người đục ra từ ngọn núi và nghiền nát sắt, đồng, sành, bạc và vàng. Đức Chúa Trời vĩ đại đã bầy tỏ cho bệ hạ biết điều gì sẽ xảy ra sau này. Tôi đã thuật chiêm bao đúng như bệ hạ thấy, và lời giải hoàn toàn đáng tin cậy.”

Vua Thăng Chức Cho Đa-ni-ên

⁴⁶Ngay sau đó, vua Nê-bu-cát-nết-sa sấp mặt xuống đất, lạy Đa-ni-ên, và ra lệnh đem lễ vật và trầm hương tặng cho Đa-ni-ên. ⁴⁷Vua tuyên bố: “Đức Chúa Trời của ngươi thật là thần vĩ đại nhất trong các thần, là Chúa Tể trên các vua chúa, là Đấng tiết lộ điều huyền nhiệm, vì Ngài đã ban cho ngươi khả năng giải bầy điều huyền nhiệm này.”
⁴⁸Vua thăng chức cho Đa-ni-ên và ban cho chàng nhiều tặng phẩm quý giá. Vua giao cho Đa-ni-ên cai trị toàn tỉnh Ba-by-lôn và cử chàng làm tham mưu trưởng lãnh đạo tất cả các nhà thông thái Ba-by-lôn. ⁴⁹Theo lời thỉnh cầu của Đa-ni-ên, vua bổ nhiệm Sa-đơ-rắc, Mê-sác, và A-bết Nê-gô quản lý nha hành chánh tỉnh Ba-by-lôn, còn Đa-ni-ên phục vụ tại triều.
