Dedication to Theophilus
1Inasmuch as many have taken in hand to set in order a narrative of those ⚓things which have been fulfilled among us,
2just as those who ⚓from the beginning were ⚓eyewitnesses and ministers of the word ⚓delivered them to us,
3it seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write to you an orderly account, ⚓most excellent Theophilus,
4⚓that you may know the certainty of those things in which you were instructed.
John’s Birth Announced to Zacharias
5There was ⚓in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, ⚓of the division of ⚓Abijah. His ⚓wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.
6And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
7But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both well advanced in years.
8So it was, that while he was serving as priest before God in the order of his division,
9according to the custom of the priesthood, his lot fell ⚓to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.
10⚓And the whole multitude of the people was praying outside at the hour of incense.
11Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of ⚓the altar of incense.
12And when Zacharias saw him,⚓he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.
13But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and ⚓you shall call his name John.
14And you will have joy and gladness, and ⚓many will rejoice at his birth.
15For he will be ⚓great in the sight of the Lord, and ⚓shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, ⚓even from his mother’s womb.
16And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God.
17⚓He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”
18And Zacharias said to the angel, ⚓“How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years.”
19And the angel answered and said to him, “I am ⚓Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and was sent to speak to you and bring you these glad ⚓tidings.
20But behold, ⚓you will be mute and not able to speak until the day these things take place, because you did not believe my words which will be fulfilled in their own time.”
21And the people waited for Zacharias, and marveled that he lingered so long in the temple.
22But when he came out, he could not speak to them; and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple, for he beckoned to them and remained speechless.
23So it was, as soon as ⚓the days of his service were completed, that he departed to his own house.
24Now after those days his wife Elizabeth conceived; and she hid herself five months, saying,
25“Thus the Lord has dealt with me, in the days when He looked on me, to ⚓take away my reproach among people.”
Christ’s Birth Announced to Mary
26Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth,
27to a virgin ⚓betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary.
28And having come in, the angel said to her, ⚓“Rejoice, highly favored one,⚓the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!”
29But when she saw him,⚓she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was.
30Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found ⚓favor with God.
31⚓And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and ⚓shall call His name Jesus.
32He will be great, ⚓and will be called the Son of the Highest; and ⚓the Lord God will give Him the ⚓throne of His ⚓father David.
33⚓And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”
34Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?”
35And the angel answered and said to her, ⚓“The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called ⚓the Son of God.
36Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren.
37For ⚓with God nothing will be impossible.”
38Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.
Mary Visits Elizabeth
39Now Mary arose in those days and went into the hill country with haste, ⚓to a city of Judah,
40and entered the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth.
41And it happened, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was ⚓filled with the Holy Spirit.
42Then she spoke out with a loud voice and said, ⚓“Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!
43But why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
44For indeed, as soon as the voice of your greeting sounded in my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.
45⚓Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the Lord.”
The Song of Mary
46And Mary said:
⚓“My soul magnifies the Lord,
47And my spirit has ⚓rejoiced in ⚓God my Savior.
48For ⚓He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant;
For behold, henceforth ⚓all generations will call me blessed.
49For He who is mighty ⚓has done great things for me,
And ⚓holy is His name.
50And ⚓His mercy is on those who fear Him
From generation to generation.
51⚓He has shown strength with His arm;
⚓He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
52⚓He has put down the mighty from their thrones,
And exalted the lowly.
53He has ⚓filled the hungry with good things,
And the rich He has sent away empty.
54He has helped His ⚓servant Israel,
⚓In remembrance of His mercy,
55⚓As He spoke to our ⚓fathers,
To Abraham and to his ⚓seed forever.”
56And Mary remained with her about three months, and returned to her house.
Birth of John the Baptist
57Now Elizabeth’s full time came for her to be delivered, and she brought forth a son.
58When her neighbors and relatives heard how the Lord had shown great mercy to her, they ⚓rejoiced with her.
Circumcision of John the Baptist
59So it was, ⚓on the eighth day, that they came to circumcise the child; and they would have called him by the name of his father, Zacharias.
60His mother answered and said, ⚓“No; he shall be called John.”
61But they said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who is called by this name.”
62So they made signs to his father—what he would have him called.
63And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, saying, “His name is John.” So they all marveled.
64Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, praising God.
65Then fear came on all who dwelt around them; and all these sayings were discussed throughout all the hill country of Judea.
66And all those who heard them⚓kept them in their hearts, saying, “What kind of child will this be?” And ⚓the hand of the Lord was with him.
Zacharias’ Prophecy
67Now his father Zacharias ⚓was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying:
68“Blessed⚓is the Lord God of Israel,
For ⚓He has visited and redeemed His people,
69⚓And has raised up a horn of salvation for us
In the house of His servant David,
70⚓As He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets,
Who have been⚓since the world began,
71That we should be saved from our enemies
And from the hand of all who hate us,
72⚓To perform the mercy promised to our fathers
And to remember His holy covenant,
73⚓The oath which He swore to our father Abraham:
74To grant us that we,
Being delivered from the hand of our enemies,
Might ⚓serve Him without fear,
75⚓In holiness and righteousness before Him all the days of our life.
76“And you, child, will be called the ⚓prophet of the Highest;
For ⚓you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways,
77To give ⚓knowledge of salvation to His people
By the remission of their sins,
78Through the tender mercy of our God,
With which the Dayspring from on high has visited us;
79⚓To give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death,
To ⚓guide our feet into the way of peace.”
80So ⚓the child grew and became strong in spirit, and ⚓was in the deserts till the day of his manifestation to Israel.

2đúng như những người đã từng chứng kiến và phục vụ đạo Chúa⚓ từ ban đầu truyền lại cho chúng ta.
3Vì thế, sau khi cẩn thận tra cứu mọi việc từ đầu, tôi thiết tưởng cũng nên theo thứ tự mà viết cho ngài
4để ngài biết những điều mình đã học là chắc chắn.

Lời tiên tri về sự ra đời của Giăng Báp-tít
8Chuyện xảy ra khi Xa-cha-ri theo phiên thứ của ban mình làm công tác tế lễ trước mặt Đức Chúa Trời.
9Khi bắt thăm theo thông lệ của các thầy tế lễ, ông đã trúng thăm được vào đền thờ⚓ của Chúa để dâng hương.
10Trong giờ dâng hương, cả đoàn dân đông đều ở ngoài cầu nguyện.
11Bấy giờ có một thiên sứ của Chúa hiện đến với Xa-cha-ri, đứng bên phải bàn thờ dâng hương.
12Thấy thiên sứ, Xa-cha-ri bối rối, kinh hãi.
13Nhưng thiên sứ bảo ông: “Nầy, Xa-cha-ri, đừng sợ! Vì lời cầu nguyện của ngươi đã được nhậm. Ê-li-sa-bét, vợ ngươi, sẽ sinh một con trai; ngươi hãy đặt tên là Giăng.
14Con trai ấy sẽ làm cho ngươi vui mừng hớn hở, và nhiều người sẽ hoan hỉ khi con trẻ ra đời.
15Vì con trẻ ấy sẽ được tôn trọng trước mặt Chúa, không uống rượu nho hay thức uống có men, và sẽ được đầy dẫy Đức Thánh Linh từ khi còn trong lòng mẹ.⚓
16Con trẻ ấy sẽ đem nhiều người Y-sơ-ra-ên trở lại cùng Chúa là Đức Chúa Trời của họ;
17con ấy sẽ lấy tinh thần và quyền năng của Ê-li mà đi trước Chúa, để đem lòng cha trở về với con cái, đem kẻ không vâng phục đến sự khôn ngoan của người công chính, và để chuẩn bị một dân tộc sẵn sàng cho Chúa.”⚓
18Xa-cha-ri thưa với thiên sứ: “Làm sao tôi biết việc nầy sẽ xảy ra? Vì tôi đã già, vợ tôi đã cao tuổi rồi.”
19Thiên sứ đáp: “Ta là Gáp-ri-ên hằng đứng trước mặt Đức Chúa Trời. Ta được sai đến nói với ngươi và báo tin mừng nầy cho ngươi.⚓
20Nầy, ngươi sẽ bị câm, không thể nói được, cho đến ngày các điều ấy xảy ra, vì ngươi không tin lời ta, là lời sẽ được ứng nghiệm đúng thời điểm.”
21Trong lúc ấy, dân chúng đang đợi Xa-cha-ri; họ ngạc nhiên vì ông ở lâu trong đền thờ.
22Lúc đi ra, Xa-cha-ri không nói được với dân chúng thì họ mới hiểu rằng ông đã thấy một khải tượng trong đền thờ. Ông ra dấu cho họ vì vẫn còn bị câm.
23Khi những ngày phục vụ đã mãn, ông trở về nhà.
24Sau những ngày ấy, vợ ông là Ê-li-sa-bét mang thai và ẩn mình trong năm tháng. Bà nói rằng:
25“Chúa đã ban ơn cho tôi. Trong những ngày nầy, Ngài đoái thương tôi và cất đi sự hổ nhục của tôi giữa mọi người.”
Thiên sứ báo tin Đức Chúa Jêsus giáng sinh
26Vào tháng thứ sáu, Đức Chúa Trời sai thiên sứ Gáp-ri-ên đến thành Na-xa-rét, thuộc miền Ga-li-lê,
27gặp một trinh nữ đã đính hôn với một người nam tên là Giô-sép, thuộc dòng vua Đa-vít. Trinh nữ ấy tên là Ma-ri.⚓
28Thiên sứ đến gặp cô và nói: “Hỡi người được ơn, chúc mừng cô! Chúa ở cùng cô!”
29Nhưng Ma-ri rất bối rối về những lời nầy và tự hỏi lời chào ấy có nghĩa gì.
30Thiên sứ tiếp: “Hỡi Ma-ri, đừng sợ vì cô đã được ơn trước mặt Đức Chúa Trời.
31Nầy, cô sẽ mang thai, sinh một con trai và đặt tên là JÊSUS.⚓
32Con trai ấy sẽ được tôn trọng, được gọi là Con của Đấng Chí Cao. Chúa là Đức Chúa Trời sẽ ban cho Ngài ngôi Đa-vít, tổ phụ Ngài.⚓
33Ngài sẽ trị vì đời đời nhà Gia-cốp; vương quốc Ngài mãi mãi trường tồn.”
34Ma-ri thưa với thiên sứ: “Tôi chưa ăn ở với người nam nào thì làm sao có được điều đó?”
35Thiên sứ đáp: “Đức Thánh Linh sẽ ngự trên cô, và quyền năng của Đấng Chí Cao sẽ phủ che cô; cho nên con thánh sinh ra sẽ được gọi là Con Đức Chúa Trời.
36Kìa, Ê-li-sa-bét, người bà con của cô, cũng đã có thai một con trai trong lúc già nua. Người ấy vốn có tiếng là hiếm muộn mà nay đã mang thai được sáu tháng rồi.
37Bởi vì không có việc gì Đức Chúa Trời chẳng làm được.”⚓
38Ma-ri thưa: “Tôi đây là tớ gái của Chúa. Xin điều ấy xảy đến cho tôi như lời ngài truyền!” Rồi thiên sứ rời khỏi Ma-ri.
Ma-ri viếng thăm Ê-li-sa-bét. – Bài ca của Ma-ri
39Trong những ngày ấy, Ma-ri đứng dậy, vội vã đi về miền núi, đến một thành của Giu-đa,
40vào nhà Xa-cha-ri và chào Ê-li-sa-bét.
41Ê-li-sa-bét vừa nghe tiếng Ma-ri chào thì thai nhi trong bụng liền nhảy nhót. Ê-li-sa-bét được đầy dẫy Đức Thánh Linh;
42bà reo lên rằng: “Cô thật có phước trong giới phụ nữ, thai nhi trong bụng cô cũng được phước.
43Do đâu tôi được vinh hạnh nầy, là mẹ của Chúa đến thăm tôi?
44Vì kìa, khi tai tôi vừa nghe tiếng cô chào thì thai nhi trong bụng tôi liền nhảy mừng.
45Phước cho cô đã tin, vì lời Chúa phán với cô sẽ được ứng nghiệm!”
46Ma-ri nói:⚓
“Linh hồn tôi tôn ngợi Chúa,
47Tâm linh tôi mừng rỡ trong Đức Chúa Trời là Cứu Chúa tôi,
48Vì Ngài đã đoái thương thân phận hèn mọn của tớ gái Ngài.⚓
Nầy, từ nay về sau, mọi thế hệ sẽ khen tôi là người có phước;
49Bởi Đấng Toàn Năng đã làm các việc lớn cho tôi.
Danh Ngài là thánh,
50Và Ngài thương xót những người kính sợ Ngài,
Từ thế hệ nầy qua thế hệ kia.
51Ngài đã dùng tay Ngài làm những việc quyền năng;
Làm tan tác những kẻ có tư tưởng kiêu ngạo trong lòng.
52Ngài đã truất ngôi những kẻ thống trị,⚓
Và cất nhắc những người khiêm nhường lên.
53Ngài đã làm cho người đói được đầy thức ngon,
Và đuổi kẻ giàu về tay không.
54Ngài đã giúp đỡ Y-sơ-ra-ên, đầy tớ Ngài,
Và nhớ lại sự thương xót của Ngài,
55Như đã phán với tổ phụ chúng ta,⚓
Với Áp-ra-ham và dòng dõi người đến muôn đời.”
56Ma-ri ở với Ê-li-sa-bét khoảng ba tháng, rồi trở về nhà mình.
Giăng Báp-tít ra đời
57Bấy giờ, đến ngày sinh nở, Ê-li-sa-bét sinh một bé trai.
58Nghe tin Chúa đã tỏ lòng thương xót lớn lao với bà, láng giềng và bà con đều đến chung vui với bà.
59Đến ngày thứ tám, họ đến cắt bì cho con trẻ và đặt tên là Xa-cha-ri theo tên cha.⚓
60Nhưng người mẹ nói rằng: “Không! Phải đặt tên cháu là Giăng.”
61Họ nói: “Trong thân tộc của bà không ai có tên đó.”
62Họ ra dấu hỏi người cha muốn đặt tên con là gì.
63Xa-cha-ri bảo lấy bảng nhỏ và viết: “Tên nó là Giăng.” Mọi người đều ngạc nhiên.
64Lập tức, miệng ông mở ra, lưỡi thong thả, ông nói và ca ngợi Đức Chúa Trời.
65Cả xóm giềng đều sợ hãi, và người ta bàn tán với nhau về các việc ấy khắp miền đồi núi Giu-đê.
66Mọi người nghe đều ghi nhớ trong lòng, và nói: “Con trẻ nầy về sau sẽ ra thể nào?” Vì thật tay Chúa đã ở cùng con trẻ ấy.
Bài ca của Xa-cha-ri
67Xa-cha-ri, cha đứa trẻ ấy, được đầy dẫy Đức Thánh Linh nói tiên tri rằng:
68“Ngợi tôn Chúa, là Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên,
Vì Ngài đã thăm viếng và cứu chuộc dân Ngài,
69Ngài đã dấy lên cho chúng ta, trong nhà Đa-vít, đầy tớ Ngài,
Một Đấng Cứu Thế đầy quyền năng!⚓
70Như Ngài đã dùng miệng các nhà tiên tri thánh
Phán hứa từ thuở xưa,
71Ngài cứu chúng ta khỏi các kẻ thù,
Và khỏi tay mọi người ghen ghét chúng ta.
72Ngài tỏ lòng thương xót tổ phụ chúng ta,
Và nhớ lại lời giao ước thánh của Ngài,
73Như lời Ngài đã thề với Áp-ra-ham,
Là tổ phụ chúng ta,
74Rằng khi chúng ta đã được giải cứu khỏi tay kẻ nghịch thù,
Ngài sẽ cho chúng ta được phục vụ Ngài không sợ hãi gì,
75Trong sự thánh khiết và công chính
Trước mặt Ngài trọn đời mình.
76Hỡi con trẻ, người ta sẽ gọi con là nhà tiên tri của Đấng Chí Cao;⚓
Con sẽ đi trước mặt Chúa, dọn đường cho Ngài,
77Để dân Ngài nhờ sự tha tội
Mà biết sự cứu rỗi.
78Bởi lòng thương xót của Đức Chúa Trời chúng ta,
Mà ánh bình minh từ trên cao thăm viếng chúng ta,
79Để soi sáng những người ngồi ở nơi tối tăm và trong bóng sự chết,⚓
Cùng dẫn bước chúng ta vào nẻo bình an.”
80Con trẻ lớn lên, tâm linh mạnh mẽ, sống nơi hoang mạc cho đến ngày xuất hiện trước dân Y-sơ-ra-ên.
