The Nations Remaining in the Land

¹Now these are⚓the nations which the Lord left, that He might test Israel by them, that is, all who had not known any of the wars in Canaan ²(this was only so that the generations of the children of Israel might be taught to know war, at least those who had not formerly known it), ³namely,⚓five lords of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites who dwelt in Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal Hermon to the entrance of Hamath. ⁴And they were left, that He might test Israel by them, to know whether they would obey the commandments of the Lord, which He had commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.
⁵⚓Thus the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. ⁶And ⚓they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons; and they served their gods.

Othniel

⁷So the children of Israel did ⚓evil in the sight of the Lord. They ⚓forgot the Lord their God, and served the Baals and Asherahs. ⁸Therefore the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel, and He ⚓sold them into the hand of ⚓Cushan-Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia; and the children of Israel served Cushan-Rishathaim eight years. ⁹When the children of Israel ⚓cried out to the Lord, the Lord⚓raised up a deliverer for the children of Israel, who delivered them: ⚓Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother. ¹⁰⚓The Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and the Lord delivered Cushan-Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed over Cushan-Rishathaim. ¹¹So the land had rest for forty years. Then Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

Ehud

¹²⚓And the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord. So the Lord strengthened ⚓Eglon king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the Lord. ¹³Then he gathered to himself the people of Ammon and ⚓Amalek, went and defeated Israel, and took possession of ⚓the City of Palms. ¹⁴So the children of Israel ⚓served Eglon king of Moab eighteen years.
¹⁵But when the children of Israel ⚓cried out to the Lord, the Lord raised up a deliverer for them: Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a ⚓left-handed man. By him the children of Israel sent tribute to Eglon king of Moab. ¹⁶Now Ehud made himself a dagger (it was double-edged and a cubit in length) and fastened it under his clothes on his right thigh. ¹⁷So he brought the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. (Now Eglon was a very fat man.) ¹⁸And when he had finished presenting the tribute, he sent away the people who had carried the tribute. ¹⁹But he himself turned back ⚓from the stone images that were at Gilgal, and said, “I have a secret message for you, O king.”
He said, “Keep silence!” And all who attended him went out from him.
²⁰So Ehud came to him (now he was sitting upstairs in his cool private chamber). Then Ehud said, “I have a message from God for you.” So he arose from his seat. ²¹Then Ehud reached with his left hand, took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly. ²²Even the hilt went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, for he did not draw the dagger out of his belly; and his entrails came out. ²³Then Ehud went out through the porch and shut the doors of the upper room behind him and locked them.
²⁴When he had gone out, Eglon’s servants came to look, and to their surprise, the doors of the upper room were locked. So they said, “He is probably ⚓attending to his needs in the cool chamber.” ²⁵So they waited till they were ⚓embarrassed, and still he had not opened the doors of the upper room. Therefore they took the key and opened them. And there was their master, fallen dead on the floor.
²⁶But Ehud had escaped while they delayed, and passed beyond the stone images and escaped to Seirah. ²⁷And it happened, when he arrived, that ⚓he blew the trumpet in the ⚓mountains of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mountains; and he led them. ²⁸Then he said to them, “Follow me, for ⚓the Lord has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand.” So they went down after him, seized the ⚓fords of the Jordan leading to Moab, and did not allow anyone to cross over. ²⁹And at that time they killed about ten thousand men of Moab, all stout men of valor; not a man escaped. ³⁰So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And ⚓the land had rest for eighty years.

Shamgar

³¹After him was ⚓Shamgar the son of Anath, who killed six hundred men of the Philistines ⚓with an ox goad; ⚓and he also delivered ⚓Israel.

¹Sau đây là các dân CHÚA không đuổi ra. Ngài muốn thử dân Ít-ra-en là những người chưa hề đánh giặc trong xứ Ca-na-an. ²Lý do CHÚA còn để các dân trong xứ là để tập cho con cháu Ít-ra-en chưa từng tham gia trong các cuộc chiến trước kia biết đánh giặc. ³Sau đây là các dân tộc đó: năm lãnh tụ dân Phi-li-tin, tất cả dân Ca-na-an, dân Xi-đôn, và dân Hê-vít sống trong vùng núi Li-băng từ núi Ba-anh Hẹt-môn cho đến Lê-bô Ha-mát. ⁴Các dân đó còn sống trong xứ để thử dân Ít-ra-en xem họ có vâng theo mệnh lệnh mà Ngài đã ban cho các tổ tiên qua Mô-se hay không.
⁵Dân Ít-ra-en sống chung với các dân Ca-na-an, dân Hê-tít, dân A-mô-rít, dân Phê-ri-sít, dân Hê-vít, và dân Giê-bu-sít. ⁶Dân Ít-ra-en bắt đầu cưới con gái của các dân đó và gả con gái mình cho con trai các dân đó. Dân Ít-ra-en cũng phục vụ các thần của những dân nầy.

Ốt-ni-ên, quan án đầu tiên

⁷Dân Ít-ra-en làm điều CHÚA cho là quấy. Họ quên CHÚA là Thượng Đế và phục vụ các thần Ba-anh và A-sê-ra. ⁸Vì thế CHÚA nổi giận cùng Ít-ra-en và cho phép Cu-san Ri-sa-tham, vua miền Tây Bắc Mê-sô-bô-ta-mi thống trị Ít-ra-en trong tám năm. ⁹Khi dân Ít-ra-en kêu cứu cùng CHÚA, Ngài liền sai người đến giải cứu họ. Ốt-ni-ên, con trai Kê-na, em Ca-lép, giải cứu dân Ít-ra-en. ¹⁰Thần linh của CHÚA nhập vào Ốt-ni-ên, ông trở thành quan án cho dân Ít-ra-en. Khi ra trận, CHÚA trao Cu-san Ri-sa-tham, vua miền Tây Bắc Mê-sô-bô-ta-mi, vào tay Ốt-ni-ên. ¹¹Cho nên xứ được thái bình trong bốn mươi năm. Rồi Ốt-ni-ên, con Kê-na, qua đời.

Quan án Ê-hút

¹²Dân Ít-ra-en lại làm điều CHÚA cho là quấy. Ngài trao quyền cho Éc-lôn, vua Mô-áp, đánh bại dân Ít-ra-en vì điều ác họ làm. ¹³Éc-lôn rủ dân Am-môn và dân A-ma-léc làm đồng minh. Chúng tấn công Ít-ra-en và chiếm Giê-ri-cô, thành phố cây chà là. ¹⁴Dân Ít-ra-en bị Éc-lôn, vua Mô-áp thống trị trong mười tám năm.
¹⁵Khi dân chúng kêu cứu cùng CHÚA, Ngài sai người đến giải cứu họ. Người đó là Ê-hút, con Ghê-ra, thuộc chi tộc Bên-gia-min, ông thuận tay trái. Dân Ít-ra-en sai Ê-hút mang đồ triều cống qua cho Éc-lôn, vua Mô-áp. ¹⁶Ê-hút làm một cây gươm hai lưỡi, dài khoảng mười tám phân Anh. Ông đeo gươm đó bên hông phải dưới lớp áo quần.
¹⁷Ê-hút trao cho Éc-lôn, vua Mô-áp, đồ triều cống vua đòi. Éc-lôn rất mập. ¹⁸Sau khi trao đồ triều cống cho Éc-lôn, Ê-hút bảo những người mang đồ triều cống ra về. ¹⁹Khi ông đi qua các bức tượng gần Ghinh-ganh, ông quay trở lại và bảo Éc-lôn, “Thưa vua Éc-lôn, tôi có chuyện bí mật muốn nói cùng vua.” Vua bảo, “Khoan nói đã!” Rồi vua bảo các tôi tớ ra khỏi phòng. ²⁰Ê-hút đi vào gặp vua Éc-lôn trong khi vua đang ngồi một mình phía trên cung điện nghỉ mát mùa hè.
Ê-hút nói, “Tôi có lời nhắn của Thượng Đế cho vua.” Vừa khi vua đứng lên khỏi ghế, ²¹thì Ê-hút dùng tay trái rút gươm đeo nơi hông phải ra đâm sâu vào bụng vua! ²²Cán lún vào và lưỡi gươm ló ra sau lưng vua. Mỡ của vua che lấp hết lưỡi gươm cho nên Ê-hút để nguyên lưỡi gươm trong bụng Éc-lôn.
²³Xong Ê-hút đi ra khỏi phòng khóa cửa lại. ²⁴Sau khi Ê-hút ra đi thì các tôi tớ trở lại thấy cửa khóa cho nên chúng tưởng nhà vua đi tiểu. ²⁵Chúng chờ thật lâu. Sau cùng chúng đâm lo vì vua không mở cửa cho nên chúng lấy chìa khóa và mở cửa thì thấy vua chúng nằm sóng soài trên sàn nhà!
²⁶Trong khi các tôi tớ đang hoang mang thì Ê-hút trốn thoát. Ông đi qua các pho tượng và đến Sê-ia. ²⁷Khi đến vùng núi Ép-ra-im ông liền thổi kèn. Dân Ít-ra-en nghe nên từ vùng núi đổ ra theo Ê-hút. ²⁸Ông bảo họ, “Hãy theo ta! CHÚA đã giúp các ngươi đánh bại Mô-áp, là kẻ thù các ngươi.”
Vậy dân Ít-ra-en đi theo Ê-hút và chiếm chỗ băng ngang sông Giô-đanh. Họ không cho dân Mô-áp băng ngang sông Giô-đanh. ²⁹Dân Ít-ra-en giết khoảng mười ngàn dũng sĩ của Mô-áp; không một ai trốn thoát. ³⁰Cho nên trong ngày đó dân Mô-áp bị Ít-ra-en thống trị và xứ được thái bình trong tám mươi năm.

Quan án Sam-ga

³¹Sau Ê-hút thì Sam-ga, con A-nát⚓, giải cứu dân Ít-ra-en. Sam-ga dùng gậy dẫn bò giết sáu trăm người Phi-li-tin.
