Defeat at Ai
1But the children of Israel committed a ⚓trespass regarding the ⚓accursed things, for ⚓Achan the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed things; so the anger of the Lord burned against the children of Israel.
2Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth Aven, on the east side of Bethel, and spoke to them, saying, “Go up and spy out the country.” So the men went up and spied out Ai.
3And they returned to Joshua and said to him, “Do not let all the people go up, but let about two or three thousand men go up and attack Ai. Do not weary all the people there, for the people of Ai are few.”
4So about three thousand men went up there from the people, ⚓but they fled before the men of Ai.
5And the men of Ai struck down about thirty-six men, for they chased them from before the gate as far as Shebarim, and struck them down on the descent; therefore ⚓the hearts of the people melted and became like water.
6Then Joshua ⚓tore his clothes, and fell to the earth on his face before the ark of the Lord until evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they ⚓put dust on their heads.
7And Joshua said, “Alas, Lord God, ⚓why have You brought this people over the Jordan at all—to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? Oh, that we had been content, and dwelt on the other side of the Jordan!
8O Lord, what shall I say when Israel turns its back before its enemies?
9For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear it, and surround us, and ⚓cut off our name from the earth. Then ⚓what will You do for Your great name?”
The Sin of Achan
10So the Lord said to Joshua: “Get up! Why do you lie thus on your face?
11Israel has sinned, and they have also transgressed My covenant which I commanded them. ⚓For they have even taken some of the accursed things, and have both stolen and ⚓deceived; and they have also put it among their own stuff.
12⚓Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because ⚓they have become doomed to destruction. Neither will I be with you anymore, unless you destroy the accursed from among you.
13Get up, ⚓sanctify the people, and say, ⚓‘Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow, because thus says the Lord God of Israel: “There is an accursed thing in your midst, O Israel; you cannot stand before your enemies until you take away the accursed thing from among you.”
14In the morning therefore you shall be brought according to your tribes. And it shall be that the tribe which ⚓the Lord takes shall come according to families; and the family which the Lord takes shall come by households; and the household which the Lord takes shall come man by man.
15⚓Then it shall be that he who is taken with the accursed thing shall be burned with fire, he and all that he has, because he has ⚓transgressed the covenant of the Lord, and because he ⚓has done a disgraceful thing in Israel.’ ”
16So Joshua rose early in the morning and brought Israel by their tribes, and the tribe of Judah was taken.
17He brought the clan of Judah, and he took the family of the Zarhites; and he brought the family of the Zarhites man by man, and Zabdi was taken.
18Then he brought his household man by man, and Achan the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, ⚓was taken.
19Now Joshua said to Achan, “My son, I beg you, ⚓give glory to the Lord God of Israel, ⚓and make confession to Him, and ⚓tell me now what you have done; do not hide it from me.”
20And Achan answered Joshua and said, “Indeed ⚓I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel, and this is what I have done:
21When I saw among the spoils a beautiful Babylonian garment, two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels, I coveted them and took them. And there they are, hidden in the earth in the midst of my tent, with the silver under it.”
22So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent; and there it was, hidden in his tent, with the silver under it.
23And they took them from the midst of the tent, brought them to Joshua and to all the children of Israel, and laid them out before the Lord.
24Then Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, the silver, the garment, the wedge of gold, his sons, his daughters, his oxen, his donkeys, his sheep, his tent, and ⚓all that he had, and they brought them to ⚓the Valley of Achor.
25And Joshua said, ⚓“Why have you troubled us? The Lord will trouble you this day.” ⚓So all Israel stoned him with stones; and they burned them with fire after they had stoned them with stones.
26Then they ⚓raised over him a great heap of stones, still there to this day. So ⚓the Lord turned from the fierceness of His anger. Therefore the name of that place has been called ⚓the Valley of Achor to this day.

Dân Y-sơ-ra-ên thất trận trước dân thành A-hi
1Nhưng dân Y-sơ-ra-ên đã phạm tội bất trung về các vật đáng bị diệt, vì A-can, con trai của Cạt-mi, cháu của Xáp-đi, chắt của Xê-rách thuộc bộ tộc Giu-đa, đã lấy các vật đáng bị diệt ấy, và cơn giận của Đức Giê-hô-va nổi bừng với dân Y-sơ-ra-ên.
2Từ Giê-ri-cô, Giô-suê sai người đến thành A-hi gần Bết A-ven, về phía đông Bê-tên, truyền lệnh rằng: “Hãy đi lên do thám thành A-hi.” Vậy, họ đi lên do thám A-hi.
3Rồi họ trở về, trình với Giô-suê: “Không cần đem cả dân chúng đi lên đó mà chỉ cho khoảng vài ba nghìn người đi lên đó để đánh thành A-hi thôi. Đừng làm cho cả dân chúng nhọc công tốn sức ở đó vì dân A-hi quá ít.”
4Vậy có khoảng ba nghìn người đi lên đó nhưng họ đã chạy trốn người A-hi.
5Người A-hi giết khoảng ba mươi sáu người, rượt đuổi họ từ cổng thành cho đến Sê-ba-rim, và đánh bại lúc họ chạy xuống dốc. Lòng dân chúng tan ra như nước.
6Giô-suê xé áo mình và cùng với các trưởng lão Y-sơ-ra-ên sấp mặt xuống đất trước Hòm Giao Ước của Đức Giê-hô-va cho đến chiều tối và rải bụi đất lên đầu mình.
7Giô-suê nói: “Ôi! Chúa Giê-hô-va, sao Ngài đem dân nầy qua sông Giô-đanh rồi lại phó chúng con vào tay người A-mô-rít mà tiêu diệt đi? Ôi! Giá như chúng con quyết định ở lại bên kia sông Giô-đanh thì có hơn không?
8Than ôi! Lạy Chúa! Con biết nói làm sao khi Y-sơ-ra-ên đã quay lưng chạy trốn trước kẻ thù mình?
9Dân Ca-na-an và tất cả cư dân xứ nầy sẽ nghe điều đó, bao vây chúng con và diệt danh tiếng chúng con khỏi đất. Lúc ấy, Chúa sẽ làm sao cho danh lớn của Ngài?”
A-can phạm tội và bị hình phạt
10Bấy giờ, Đức Giê-hô-va phán với Giô-suê: “Hãy đứng dậy đi! Tại sao con sấp mặt xuống đất như vậy?
11Y-sơ-ra-ên đã phạm tội, họ vi phạm giao ước mà Ta đã truyền phán: lấy các vật đáng bị hủy diệt, ăn cắp, lừa dối, thậm chí giấu các vật đó trong các vật dụng của mình.
12Vì thế, dân Y-sơ-ra-ên không thể chống cự nổi kẻ thù của mình mà phải xây lưng chạy trốn chúng, bởi Y-sơ-ra-ên đã trở nên kẻ đáng bị tiêu diệt. Nếu các con không tiêu trừ các vật đáng diệt ấy, thì Ta không còn ở với các con nữa.
13Hãy đứng dậy, thánh hóa dân chúng và nói rằng: ‘Ngày mai, anh em hãy thanh tẩy chính mình vì Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên có phán: “Hỡi Y-sơ-ra-ên, các con còn giữ các vật đáng diệt ở giữa các con! Các con không thể chống cự nổi kẻ thù mình cho đến khi các con loại bỏ các vật đáng diệt ấy.”
14Vậy sáng mai, anh em sẽ đến theo từng bộ tộc; bộ tộc nào mà Đức Giê-hô-va chỉ ra, sẽ đến theo từng gia tộc; gia tộc nào mà Đức Giê-hô-va chỉ ra, sẽ đến theo từng gia đình; gia đình nào mà Đức Giê-hô-va chỉ ra, sẽ đến từng người.
15Người nào bị chỉ ra là kẻ giữ các vật đáng bị hủy diệt đó thì sẽ bị hỏa thiêu cùng với tất cả những gì thuộc về nó, vì nó đã vi phạm giao ước của Đức Giê-hô-va và làm điều ô nhục trong Y-sơ-ra-ên.’”
16Vậy sáng hôm sau, Giô-suê dậy sớm, cho dân Y-sơ-ra-ên đến gần theo từng bộ tộc và bộ tộc Giu-đa bị chỉ ra.
17Ông cho các gia tộc của Giu-đa đến gần và gia tộc Xê-rách bị chỉ ra; ông cho gia tộc Xê-rách đến gần theo từng gia đình và Xáp-đi bị chỉ ra.
18Ông cho gia đình Xáp-đi đến gần từng người một, thì A-can, con trai của Cạt-mi, cháu của Xáp-đi, chắt của Xê-rách về bộ tộc Giu-đa, bị chỉ ra.
19Giô-suê nói với A-can: “Nầy con, hãy tôn vinh Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên và ca ngợi Ngài. Hãy thú thật với ta điều con đã làm, chớ giấu giếm gì cả.”
20A-can thưa với Giô-suê: “Thật, con đã phạm tội với Giê-hô-va, Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên, và đây là điều con đã làm:
21Khi con thấy trong chiến lợi phẩm có một áo choàng Si-nê-a,⚓ rất đẹp, khoảng hai ký⚓ bạc, và một nén vàng nặng gần sáu trăm gam⚓ thì con đã tham muốn và lấy các vật ấy. Kìa, chúng được giấu dưới đất trong trại của con và bạc thì ở bên dưới.”
22Giô-suê sai người chạy đến trại, thấy áo choàng giấu tại đó, và bạc thì ở dưới.
23Họ lấy các vật đó ra khỏi trại, đem về cho Giô-suê và tất cả con dân Y-sơ-ra-ên, rồi đặt trước mặt Đức Giê-hô-va.
24Bấy giờ, Giô-suê và cả Y-sơ-ra-ên bắt A-can, con cháu Xê-rách, cùng lấy bạc, áo choàng, nén vàng, các con trai, con gái, bò, lừa, chiên, trại, và tất cả những gì thuộc về nó, rồi dẫn đến thung lũng A-cô.
25Giô-suê nói: “Sao con khuấy rối chúng ta? Đức Giê-hô-va chắc sẽ khuấy rối con hôm nay.” Rồi cả Y-sơ-ra-ên ném đá nó; họ hỏa thiêu chúng và lấy đá lấp lại.
26Kế đó, họ chất lên trên nó một đống đá lớn, vẫn còn cho đến ngày nay. Đức Giê-hô-va liền nguôi cơn thịnh nộ. Vì thế, người ta gọi chỗ nầy là thung lũng A-cô⚓ cho đến ngày nay.
