1After Saul returned from pursuing the Philistines, he was told, “David is in the Desert of En Gedi.” 2So Saul took three thousand able young men from all Israel and set out to look for David and his men near the Crags of the Wild Goats. 3He came to the sheep pens along the way; a cave was there, and Saul went in to relieve himself. David and his men were far back in the cave. 4The men said, “This is the day the Lord spoke of when he said⚓ to you, ‘I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish.’ ” Then David crept up unnoticed and cut off a corner of Saul’s robe. 5Afterward, David was conscience-stricken for having cut off a corner of his robe. 6He said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed, or lay my hand on him; for he is the anointed of the Lord.” 7With these words David sharply rebuked his men and did not allow them to attack Saul. And Saul left the cave and went his way. 8Then David went out of the cave and called out to Saul, “My lord the king!” When Saul looked behind him, David bowed down and prostrated himself with his face to the ground. 9He said to Saul, “Why do you listen when men say, ‘David is bent on harming you’? 10This day you have seen with your own eyes how the Lord delivered you into my hands in the cave. Some urged me to kill you, but I spared you; I said, ‘I will not lay my hand on my lord, because he is the Lord’s anointed.’ 11See, my father, look at this piece of your robe in my hand! I cut off the corner of your robe but did not kill you. See that there is nothing in my hand to indicate that I am guilty of wrongdoing or rebellion. I have not wronged you, but you are hunting me down to take my life. 12May the Lord judge between you and me. And may the Lord avenge the wrongs you have done to me, but my hand will not touch you. 13As the old saying goes, ‘From evildoers come evil deeds,’ so my hand will not touch you. 14“Against whom has the king of Israel come out? Who are you pursuing? A dead dog? A flea? 15May the Lord be our judge and decide between us. May he consider my cause and uphold it; may he vindicate me by delivering me from your hand.” 16When David finished saying this, Saul asked, “Is that your voice, David my son?” And he wept aloud. 17“You are more righteous than I,” he said. “You have treated me well, but I have treated you badly. 18You have just now told me about the good you did to me; the Lord delivered me into your hands, but you did not kill me. 19When a man finds his enemy, does he let him get away unharmed? May the Lord reward you well for the way you treated me today. 20I know that you will surely be king and that the kingdom of Israel will be established in your hands. 21Now swear to me by the Lord that you will not kill off my descendants or wipe out my name from my father’s family.” 22So David gave his oath to Saul. Then Saul returned home, but David and his men went up to the stronghold.

1Sau khi đánh đuổi quân Phi-li-tin trở về, Sau-lơ được tin Đa-vít đang ở sa mạc Ên-ghê-đi. 2Ông dẫn theo ba ngàn quân tinh nhuệ nhất Y-sơ-ra-ên, đến Đá dê Rừng tìm Đa-vít và thuộc hạ. 3Đến một nơi có chuồng cừu, Sau-lơ thấy một cái hang nên vào đó đi tiện. Lúc ấy Đa-vít cùng các thuộc hạ đang ẩn nấp trong góc hang. 4Một người thì thầm với Đa-vít: "Hôm nay là ngày Chúa có nói trước với ông: Ta sẽ giao kẻ thù vào tay con, con xử nó ra sao tùy ý.' Đa-vít nhẹ nhàng đứng dậy, đến cắt vạt áo ngoài của Sau-lơ. 5Nhưng ngay sau ấy Đa-vít tự trách về việc này. 6Ông bảo với thuộc hạ: "Xin Chúa kiểm soát hành động ta, đừng cho ta ra tay ám hại vua là người được Chúa xức dầu." 7Những lời Đa-vít thuyết phục đám thuộc hạ làm họ không còn ý định giết Sau-lơ nữa. Sau-lơ ra khỏi hang tiếp tục lên đường. 8Đa-vít ra theo, lớn tiếng gọi: "Bệ hạ!" Sau-lơ quay lại. Đa-vít cung kính cúi gập người xuống, 9tâu: "Tại sao bệ hạ nghe lời người ta nó rằng tôi muốn hại vua? 10Ngày hôm nay, chính bệ hạ thấy rõ. Vì lúc nảy trong hang, Chúa có giao mạng bệ hạ vào tay tôi; có người bảo tôi giết vua, nhưng tôi không nỡ, vì tự nghĩ: Ta không được giết chủ, người được Chúa xức dầu.' 11Cha thấy không, con có vạt áo của cha trong tay đây này. Con cắt vạt áo chứ không giết cha. Như thế đủ cho cha thấy rằng con không định hại vua, phản chủ. Con không có lỗi gì cả, trong khi cha lại tìm mọi cách để giết con! 12Xin Chúa xét xử cha và con. Chúa sẽ báo ứng chứ con không hại cha đâu. 13Người xưa có nói: 'Kẻ ác làm điều ác,' nhưng con sẽ không động đến cha. 14Đường đường một đấng quân vương lại đem quân đuổi bắt một con chó chết, một con bọ chét hay sao? 15Xin Chúa phân xử giữa cha với con. Xin Ngài biện hộ và giải cứu con khỏi tay cha." 16Nghe xong, Sau-lơ hỏi: "Có phải con đấy không, Đa-vít?" và vua khóc lớn lên. 17Vua nói với Đa-vít: "Con tốt hơn cha, vì con lấy thiện trả ác. 18Hôm nay con đã lấy lòng nhân đãi cha, vì Chúa nạp cha vào tay con mà con không giết. 19Không ai bắt được kẻ thù rồi thả cho đi, nhưng hôm nay con đã làm như thế cho cha. Xin Chúa ân thưởng cho con. 20Ta biết chắc rồi đây con sẽ làm vua, và ngôi nước sẽ được lập vững bền trong tay con. 21Chỉ xin con nhân danh Chúa thề sẽ không tuyệt diệt con cháu của cha, làm cho cha không còn người mang danh, nối dõi." 22Đa-vít thề, và Sau-lơ trở về hoàng cung. Đa-vít và thuộc hạ lại trở về chỗ ẩn trú.
