Nữ vương nước Sê-ba đến thăm Sa-lô-môn

¹ Khi nữ vương Sê-ba nghe nói về danh tiếng của Sa-lô-môn và về danh của Đức Giê-hô-va, bèn đến hỏi thử Sa-lô-môn nhiều câu đố.⚓ ² Bà đến Giê-ru-sa-lem có hầu hạ theo rất đông, lạc đà chở thuốc thơm, nhiều vàng và ngọc. Bà đến cùng Sa-lô-môn, nói với người mọi điều có ở trong lòng mình. ³ Sa-lô-môn đáp các câu hỏi của bà, chẳng câu nào ẩn bí quá cho vua, mà vua không giải nghĩa nổi cho bà.
⁴ Khi nữ vương Sê-ba thấy mọi sự khôn ngoan của Sa-lô-môn, cung điện người đã cất, ⁵ những món ăn trên bàn người, nhà cửa của tôi tớ người, thứ tự công việc của các quan, và đồ ăn mặc của họ, các quan chước tửu, và các của lễ thiêu người dâng trong đền Đức Giê-hô-va, thì mất vía. ⁶ Rồi bà nói rằng: Điều tôi nghe nói trong xứ tôi về lời nói và sự khôn ngoan của vua, thì thật lắm. ⁷ Song trước khi tôi chưa đến đây, và chưa thấy tận mắt những điều nầy, thì tôi chẳng tin; và kìa, người ta chẳng nói đến được phân nửa! Sự khôn ngoan và oai nghi của vua trổi hơn tiếng đồn tôi đã nghe. ⁸ Các tôi tớ vua thật có phước thay! Các tôi tớ vua hằng đứng chầu trước mặt vua, nghe sự khôn ngoan của vua, lấy làm có phước thay! ⁹ Đáng khen ngợi thay Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời của vua, vì Ngài đẹp lòng vua, đặt vua trên ngôi của Y-sơ-ra-ên! Bởi vì Đức Giê-hô-va yêu dấu Y-sơ-ra-ên mãi mãi, nên Ngài đã lập vua làm vua đặng cai trị theo sự ngay thẳng và công bình. ¹⁰ Đoạn nữ vương dâng cho vua một trăm hai mươi ta-lâng vàng và rất nhiều thuốc thơm cùng ngọc quí. Từ đó đến nay, chẳng hề có ai đem thuốc thơm đến số nhiều bằng của nữ vương nước Sê-ba dâng cho vua Sa-lô-môn.
¹¹ Đoàn tàu Hi-ram chở vàng Ô-phia, cũng chở cây bạch đàn rất nhiều, và ngọc quí. ¹² Vua dùng cây bạch đàn nầy mà làm bao lơn cho đền thờ Đức Giê-hô-va và cho nhà vua, cùng những đàn cầm và đàn sắt cho con hát. Từ đó, chẳng hề có ai đem đến Giê-ru-sa-lem cây bạch đàn dường ấy nữa, không ai thấy lại cho đến ngày nay.
¹³ Vua Sa-lô-môn ban cho nữ vương Sê-ba mọi điều người ước và xin, chẳng kể những vật mà Sa-lô-môn đã ban cho bà, tùy lệ thường của vua. Đoạn, bà và các tôi tớ bà lên đường trở về xứ mình.
¹⁴ Vàng mà vua Sa-lô-môn thâu nhận mỗi năm cân đến sáu trăm bảy mươi sáu ta-lâng, ¹⁵ không kể vàng người thâu lấy nơi người buôn bán rong, và nơi sự đổi chác của kẻ thương mại, cùng vàng mà các vua A-ra-bi, và các quan tổng đốc của xứ đem nộp. ¹⁶ Vua Sa-lô-môn làm hai trăm cái khiên lớn bằng vàng đánh dát, cứ mỗi cái dùng sáu trăm siếc-lơ vàng; ¹⁷ lại làm ba trăm cái khiên nhỏ, bằng vàng đánh dát, cứ mỗi cái dùng ba min vàng. Vua để các khiên ấy trong đền rừng Li-ban.
¹⁸ Vua cũng làm một cái ngai lớn bằng ngà, bọc vàng ròng. ¹⁹ Ngai nầy có sáu nấc; thân cao ngai phía sau thì tròn; mỗi phía ngai có thanh nâng tay, và hai con sư tử đứng kề. ²⁰ Lại có mười hai con khác đứng trên sáu nấc, nơi hữu và tả: Chẳng có nước nào làm ngai giống như vậy.
²¹ Hết thảy các chén uống của vua Sa-lô-môn đều bằng vàng, và những khí dụng trong cung rừng Li-ban đều cũng bằng vàng ròng. Chẳng có chi là bằng bạc: Trong đời vua Sa-lô-môn, người ta chẳng kể bạc là chi. ²² Vì đoàn tàu Ta-rê-si của vua mỗi ba năm một lần vượt biển với đoàn tàu của Hi-ram, đem về vàng, bạc, ngà voi, con khỉ, và con công.
²³ Ấy vậy, vua Sa-lô-môn trổi hơn các vua thế gian về sự giàu có và sự khôn ngoan. ²⁴ Cả thiên hạ đều tìm kiếm mặt Sa-lô-môn đặng nghe sự khôn ngoan mà Đức Chúa Trời đã để trong lòng người. ²⁵ Cứ hằng năm, theo lệ định, mọi người đều đem đến dâng vật mình tiến cống cho vua, nào chậu bằng bạc và bằng vàng, áo xống, binh khí, thuốc thơm, ngựa, và la. ²⁶ Sa-lô-môn cũng nhóm xe và lính kị; có một ngàn bốn trăm xe và mười hai ngàn lính kị, để trong các thành chứa xe, và tại Giê-ru-sa-lem, gần bên vua.⚓ ²⁷ Tại Giê-ru-sa-lem vua làm cho bạc ra thường như đá, và cây bá hương nhiều như cây sung mọc nơi đồng bằng.⚓ ²⁸ Vua Sa-lô-môn do nơi Ê-díp-tô mà được ngựa; một đoàn con buôn của vua đi kiếm mua từng bầy, giá phải chăng.⚓ ²⁹ Mỗi cỗ xe mua ở xứ Ê-díp-tô và dẫn về Giê-ru-sa-lem, giá đáng sáu trăm siếc-lơ bạc, còn mỗi con ngựa giá đáng một trăm năm mươi siếc-lơ. Các vua dân Hê-tít và vua Sy-ri cũng theo giá ấy, nhờ những con buôn của vua mà mua về.

The Queen of Sheba Visits Solomon

¹When the queen of Sheba heard about the fame of Solomon and his relationship to the Lord, she came to test Solomon with hard questions. ²Arriving at Jerusalem with a very great caravan—with camels carrying spices, large quantities of gold, and precious stones—she came to Solomon and talked with him about all that she had on her mind. ³Solomon answered all her questions; nothing was too hard for the king to explain to her. ⁴When the queen of Sheba saw all the wisdom of Solomon and the palace he had built, ⁵the food on his table, the seating of his officials, the attending servants in their robes, his cupbearers, and the burnt offerings he made at⚓ the temple of the Lord, she was overwhelmed.
⁶She said to the king, “The report I heard in my own country about your achievements and your wisdom is true. ⁷But I did not believe these things until I came and saw with my own eyes. Indeed, not even half was told me; in wisdom and wealth you have far exceeded the report I heard. ⁸How happy your people must be! How happy your officials, who continually stand before you and hear your wisdom! ⁹Praise be to the Lord your God, who has delighted in you and placed you on the throne of Israel. Because of the Lord’s eternal love for Israel, he has made you king to maintain justice and righteousness.”
¹⁰And she gave the king 120 talents⚓ of gold, large quantities of spices, and precious stones. Never again were so many spices brought in as those the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon.
¹¹(Hiram’s ships brought gold from Ophir; and from there they brought great cargoes of almugwood⚓ and precious stones. ¹²The king used the almugwood to make supports⚓ for the temple of the Lord and for the royal palace, and to make harps and lyres for the musicians. So much almugwood has never been imported or seen since that day.)
¹³King Solomon gave the queen of Sheba all she desired and asked for, besides what he had given her out of his royal bounty. Then she left and returned with her retinue to her own country.

Solomon’s Splendor

¹⁴The weight of the gold that Solomon received yearly was 666 talents,⚓ ¹⁵not including the revenues from merchants and traders and from all the Arabian kings and the governors of the territories.
¹⁶King Solomon made two hundred large shields of hammered gold; six hundred shekels⚓ of gold went into each shield. ¹⁷He also made three hundred small shields of hammered gold, with three minas⚓ of gold in each shield. The king put them in the Palace of the Forest of Lebanon.
¹⁸Then the king made a great throne covered with ivory and overlaid with fine gold. ¹⁹The throne had six steps, and its back had a rounded top. On both sides of the seat were armrests, with a lion standing beside each of them. ²⁰Twelve lions stood on the six steps, one at either end of each step. Nothing like it had ever been made for any other kingdom. ²¹All King Solomon’s goblets were gold, and all the household articles in the Palace of the Forest of Lebanon were pure gold. Nothing was made of silver, because silver was considered of little value in Solomon’s days. ²²The king had a fleet of trading ships⚓ at sea along with the ships of Hiram. Once every three years it returned, carrying gold, silver and ivory, and apes and baboons.
²³King Solomon was greater in riches and wisdom than all the other kings of the earth. ²⁴The whole world sought audience with Solomon to hear the wisdom God had put in his heart. ²⁵Year after year, everyone who came brought a gift—articles of silver and gold, robes, weapons and spices, and horses and mules.
²⁶Solomon accumulated chariots and horses; he had fourteen hundred chariots and twelve thousand horses,⚓ which he kept in the chariot cities and also with him in Jerusalem. ²⁷The king made silver as common in Jerusalem as stones, and cedar as plentiful as sycamore-fig trees in the foothills. ²⁸Solomon’s horses were imported from Egypt and from Kue⚓ —the royal merchants purchased them from Kue at the current price. ²⁹They imported a chariot from Egypt for six hundred shekels of silver, and a horse for a hundred and fifty.⚓ They also exported them to all the kings of the Hittites and of the Arameans.
