Ahab Defeats the Syrians

¹Now ⚓Ben-Hadad the king of Syria gathered all his forces together; thirty-two kings were with him, with horses and chariots. And he went up and besieged ⚓Samaria, and made war against it. ²Then he sent messengers into the city to Ahab king of Israel, and said to him, “Thus says Ben-Hadad: ³‘Your silver and your gold are mine; your loveliest wives and children are mine.’ ”
⁴And the king of Israel answered and said, “My lord, O king, just as you say, I and all that I have are yours.”
⁵Then the messengers came back and said, “Thus speaks Ben-Hadad, saying, ‘Indeed I have sent to you, saying, “You shall deliver to me your silver and your gold, your wives and your children”; ⁶but I will send my servants to you tomorrow about this time, and they shall search your house and the houses of your servants. And it shall be, that whatever is pleasant in your eyes, they will put it in their hands and take it.’ ”
⁷So the king of Israel called all the elders of the land, and said, “Notice, please, and see how this man seeks trouble, for he sent to me for my wives, my children, my silver, and my gold; and I did not deny him.”
⁸And all the elders and all the people said to him, “Do not listen or consent.”
⁹Therefore he said to the messengers of Ben-Hadad, “Tell my lord the king, ‘All that you sent for to your servant the first time I will do, but this thing I cannot do.’ ”
And the messengers departed and brought back word to him.
¹⁰Then Ben-Hadad sent to him and said, ⚓“The gods do so to me, and more also, if enough dust is left of Samaria for a handful for each of the people who follow me.”
¹¹So the king of Israel answered and said, “Tell him, ‘Let not the one who puts on his armor⚓boast like the one who takes it off.’ ”
¹²And it happened when Ben-Hadad heard this message, as he and the kings were⚓drinking at the command post, that he said to his servants, “Get ready.” And they got ready to attack the city.
¹³Suddenly a prophet approached Ahab king of Israel, saying, “Thus says the Lord: ‘Have you seen all this great multitude? Behold, ⚓I will deliver it into your hand today, and you shall know that I am the Lord.’ ”
¹⁴So Ahab said, “By whom?”
And he said, “Thus says the Lord: ‘By the young leaders of the provinces.’ ”
Then he said, “Who will set the battle in order?”
And he answered, “You.”
¹⁵Then he mustered the young leaders of the provinces, and there were two hundred and thirty-two; and after them he mustered all the people, all the children of Israel—seven thousand.
¹⁶So they went out at noon. Meanwhile Ben-Hadad and the thirty-two kings helping him were ⚓getting drunk at the command post. ¹⁷The young leaders of the provinces went out first. And Ben-Hadad sent out a patrol, and they told him, saying, “Men are coming out of Samaria!” ¹⁸So he said, “If they have come out for peace, take them alive; and if they have come out for war, take them alive.”
¹⁹Then these young leaders of the provinces went out of the city with the army which followed them. ²⁰And each one killed his man; so the Syrians fled, and Israel pursued them; and Ben-Hadad the king of Syria escaped on a horse with the cavalry. ²¹Then the king of Israel went out and attacked the horses and chariots, and killed the Syrians with a great slaughter.
²²And the prophet came to the king of Israel and said to him, “Go, strengthen yourself; take note, and see what you should do, ⚓for in the spring of the year the king of Syria will come up against you.”

The Syrians Again Defeated

²³Then the servants of the king of Syria said to him, “Their gods are gods of the hills. Therefore they were stronger than we; but if we fight against them in the plain, surely we will be stronger than they. ²⁴So do this thing: Dismiss the kings, each from his position, and put captains in their places; ²⁵and you shall muster an army like the army that you have lost, horse for horse and chariot for chariot. Then we will fight against them in the plain; surely we will be stronger than they.”
And he listened to their voice and did so.
²⁶So it was, in the spring of the year, that Ben-Hadad mustered the Syrians and went up to ⚓Aphek to fight against Israel. ²⁷And the children of Israel were mustered and given provisions, and they went against them. Now the children of Israel encamped before them like two little flocks of goats, while the Syrians filled the ⚓countryside.
²⁸Then a ⚓man of God came and spoke to the king of Israel, and said, “Thus says the Lord: ‘Because the Syrians have said, “The Lordis God of the hills, but He is not God of the valleys,” therefore ⚓I will deliver all this great multitude into your hand, and you shall know that I am the Lord.’ ” ²⁹And they encamped opposite each other for seven days. So it was that on the seventh day the battle was joined; and the children of Israel killed one hundred thousand foot soldiers of the Syrians in one day. ³⁰But the rest fled to Aphek, into the city; then a wall fell on twenty-seven thousand of the men who were left.
And Ben-Hadad fled and went into the city, into an inner chamber.

Ahab’s Treaty with Ben-Hadad

³¹Then his servants said to him, “Look now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings. Please, let us ⚓put sackcloth around our waists and ropes around our heads, and go out to the king of Israel; perhaps he will spare your life.” ³²So they wore sackcloth around their waists and put ropes around their heads, and came to the king of Israel and said, “Your servant Ben-Hadad says, ‘Please let me live.’ ”
And he said, “Is he still alive? He is my brother.”
³³Now the men were watching closely to see whether any sign of mercy would come from him; and they quickly grasped at this word and said, “Your brother Ben-Hadad.”
So he said, “Go, bring him.” Then Ben-Hadad came out to him; and he had him come up into the chariot.
³⁴So Ben-Hadad said to him, ⚓“The cities which my father took from your father I will restore; and you may set up marketplaces for yourself in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria.”
Then Ahab said, “I will send you away with this treaty.” So he made a treaty with him and sent him away.

Ahab Condemned

³⁵Now a certain man of ⚓the sons of the prophets said to his neighbor ⚓by the word of the Lord, “Strike me, please.” And the man refused to strike him. ³⁶Then he said to him, “Because you have not obeyed the voice of the Lord, surely, as soon as you depart from me, a lion shall kill you.” And as soon as he left him, ⚓a lion found him and killed him.
³⁷And he found another man, and said, “Strike me, please.” So the man struck him, inflicting a wound. ³⁸Then the prophet departed and waited for the king by the road, and disguised himself with a bandage over his eyes. ³⁹Now ⚓as the king passed by, he cried out to the king and said, “Your servant went out into the midst of the battle; and there, a man came over and brought a man to me, and said, ‘Guard this man; if by any means he is missing, ⚓your life shall be for his life, or else you shall pay a talent of silver.’ ⁴⁰While your servant was busy here and there, he was gone.”
Then the king of Israel said to him, “So shall your judgment be; you yourself have decided it.”
⁴¹And he hastened to take the bandage away from his eyes; and the king of Israel recognized him as one of the prophets. ⁴²Then he said to him, “Thus says the Lord: ⚓‘Because you have let slip out of your hand a man whom I appointed to utter destruction, therefore your life shall go for his life, and your people for his people.’ ”
⁴³So the king of Israel ⚓went to his house sullen and displeased, and came to Samaria.

Bên-ha-đát tấn công Sa-ma-ri

¹Bên-ha-đát, vua Sy-ri, động viên quân lực, liên kết với ba mươi hai vua khác, đem theo vô số chiến xa và kỵ mã, đi vây đánh Sa-ma-ri. ^2,3Vua Bên-ha-đát sai sứ vào thành nói với A-háp vua Y-sơ-ra-ên như sau: "Vàng bạc của vua nay thuộc về ta, vợ đẹp con xinh hơn hết của vua cũng thuộc về ta." ⁴A-háp đáp: "Vua chúa tôi ơi! Đúng thế. Tôi và những gì của tôi đều thuộc về vua cả."
⁵Bên-ha-đát lại sai sứ đến nói: "Ngoài vàng, bạc, vợ đẹp con xinh như ta đã nói, ⁶ngày mai vào giờ này, ta sẽ sai người đến xét cung vua và nhà dân, họ sẽ lấy bất kỳ vật gì họ thích."
⁷Vua Y-sơ-ra-ên triệu tập các trưởng lão trong nước lại, nói: "Quý vị xem, người này thật tình muốn gây rối. Người ấy đã đòi vợ con, vàng bạc của tôi, tôi có từ chối gì đâu?" ⁸Các trưởng lão và mọi người ở đấy đồng tình đáp: "Xin bệ hạ đừng nhượng bộ." ⁹Nghe thế, A-háp nói với sứ Bên-ha-đát: "Tâu với vua chúa tôi rằng tất cả những điều vua đòi hỏi lần trước, tôi xin làm theo; còn về điều sau này, tôi không làm được." Sứ trở về phúc trình cho Bên-ha-đát.
¹⁰Bên-ha-đát lại sai sứ nói với A-háp: "Xin các thần trừng phạt ta, nếu ta không nghiền nát Sa-ma-ri thành bụi đất." ¹¹A-háp đáp: "Vua không nên khoác lác khi việc chưa thành."
¹²Bên-ha-đát đang uống rượu với các vua trong trại, vừa nghe được những lời này, liền ra lệnh chuẩn bị tấn công.

A-háp chiến thắng Bên-ha-đát

¹³Lúc ấy, có một tiên tri đến gặp A-háp, nói: "Chúa Hằng Hữu phán: Ngươi có thấy đạo quân đông đảo ấy không? Hôm nay Ta sẽ nạp nó vào tay ngươi để ngươi biết Ta là Chúa Hằng Hữu." ¹⁴A-háp hỏi: "Dùng ai để chiến đấu?" Tiên tri đáp: "Chúa bảo dùng tôi tớ các quan đầu tỉnh." A-háp lại hỏi: "Ai cầm quân?" Tiên tri đáp: "Bệ hạ chỉ huy."
¹⁵A-háp động viên thuộc hạ của các quan đầu tỉnh, chỉ được hai trăm ba mươi hai người. Đi sau các người này có bảy ngàn quân động viên trong toàn dân Y-sơ-ra-ên. ¹⁶Giữa trưa, khi Bên-ha-đát và ba mươi hai vua đang uống rượu say mèm trong trại, Y-sơ-ra-ên kéo quân ra; ¹⁷Tôi tớ của các quan đầu tỉnh đi trước. Đội thám báo của Bên-ha-đát thấy được, báo cáo: "Có người từ Sa-ma-ri kéo ra." ¹⁸Bên-ha-đát ra lệnh: "Bắt sống tất cả cho ta, dù chúng nó đầu hàng hay chống cự cũng bắt hết." ¹⁹Vừa lúc ấy quân Y-sơ-ra-ên kéo đến, quân sĩ theo sau tôi tớ các quan đầu tỉnh, ²⁰ai nấy thẳng tay chém giết địch quân. Quân Sy-ri bỏ chạy và quân Y-sơ-ra-ên đuổi theo. Vua Bên-ha-đát lên ngựa chạy thoát với một đám kỵ binh. ²¹Vua Y-sơ-ra-ên kéo quân tiêu diệt rất nhiều chiến xa và chiến mã cùng vô số địch quân.
²²Tiên tri đến gần A-háp, nói: "Vua phải chuẩn bị sẵn sàng cho cuộc tấn công lần thứ hai của địch quân, vì mùa xuân sang năm vua Sy-ri lại kéo quân đến."
²³Các thuộc hạ của vua Sy-ri bàn kế với chủ: "Sở dĩ Y-sơ-ra-ên thắng trận vì thần của họ là thần núi. Nếu đánh họ dưới đồng bằng ta sẽ thắng. ²⁴Lần này ta sẽ dùng các tướng thay thế các vua; ²⁵và tuyển mộ một đạo quân như đạo quân bệ hạ đã mất, số chiến xa và kỵ mã cũng bằng lần trước. Chỉ có điều lần này ta sẽ đánh họ trong đồng bằng, chắc chắn ta sẽ thắng." Vua Sy-ri làm theo lời họ bàn.
²⁶Mùa xuân năm sau, Bên-ha-đát động viên quân lực, kéo đến tấn công Y-sơ-ra-ên tại A-phéc. ²⁷Y-sơ ra-ên cũng tập họp quân sĩ, chuẩn bị lương thực và kéo ra nghênh chiến. Quân Y-sơ-ra-ên đóng quân đối diện với địch, nom giống như hai đàn dê nhỏ trước đạo quân Sy-ri đông như kiến cỏ.
²⁸Người của Thượng Đế đến, truyền cho Y-sơ-ra-ên lời Chúa: "Vì người Sy-ri nói Chúa Hằng Hữu là thần núi chứ không phải thần thung lũng, nên Ta sẽ nạp đạo quân đông đảo này vào tay ngươi để ngươi biết Ta là Chúa."
²⁹Hai bên đóng quân đối nhau như vậy trong bảy ngày, và đến ngày thứ bảy, trận chiến khởi sự. Trong một ngày, quân Y-sơ-ra-ên giết một trăm ngàn bộ binh của địch. ³⁰Tàn quân Sy-ri chạy vào thành A-phéc, nhưng tường thành đổ xuống, đè bẹp hai mươi bảy ngàn người. Bên-ha-đát cũng chạy vào thành, trốn trong phòng kín của một ngôi nhà. ³¹Các thuộc hạ tâu: "Nghe nói các vua Y-sơ-ra-ên vốn nhân từ, vì vậy, xin cho chúng tôi thắt bao bố vào lưng, quấn dây thừng trên đầu, ra xin vua Y-sơ-ra-ên tha cho vua." ³²Rồi họ thắt bao bố, quấn dây thừng đi đến tâu với vua Y-sơ-ra-ên: "Đầy tớ vua là Bên-ha-đát cầu xin vua tha mạng cho!" A-háp hỏi: "Người còn sống không? Người là anh em ta." ³³Các thuộc hạ nắm lấy các lời ấy (vì họ đang chăm chú quan sát phản ứng của A-háp) vội vàng đáp: "Bên-ha-đát đúng là em vua." A-háp bảo: "Đem người đến đây." Khi Bên-ha-đát đến, A-háp mời lên ngồi xe với mình. ³⁴Bên-ha-đát thương lượng: "Tôi xin hoàn trả các thành cha tôi đã chiếm của cha vua. Ngoài ra, vua được quyền thiết lập các cơ sở thương mại tại Đa-mách, như cha tôi đã thiết lập tại Sa-ma-ri." A-háp đáp: "Ta chấp thuận các đề nghị này và bằng lòng tha vua." Thế rồi họ kết ước với nhau và Bên-ha-đát được tha về.

Một tiên tri kết tội A-háp

³⁵Lúc đó trong số các tiên tri, có một người vâng lệnh Chúa Hằng Hữu nói với bạn mình: "Xin anh đánh tôi!" Người kia không chịu đánh. ³⁶Tiên tri nói với bạn: "Vì không nghe lời Chúa, anh sẽ bị sư-tử giết ngay sau khi anh rời tôi." Vừa lúc người bạn rời tiên tri, một con sư tử vồ người ấy chết.
³⁷Tiên tri nói với người khác: "Xin anh đánh tôi!" Người này đánh tiên tri bị thương. ³⁸Tiên tri lấy vải che mặt, giả dạng, đứng bên đường chờ vua đi qua.
³⁹Khi vua đi qua, tiên tri nói lớn tiếng cho vua nghe: "Lúc tôi ở trong chiến trận, có một người lính giao cho tôi giữ một tù binh và dặn: 'Giữ người này. Nếu để cho nó chạy thoát, anh phải đền mạng hay thường năm lượng vàng. ⁴⁰Nhưng tôi bận công việc, để tên tù chạy mất." Vua Y-sơ-ra-ên nói: "Chính anh đã tuyên án cho mình!" ⁴¹Tiên tri vội kéo vải che mặt xuống. Vua Y-sơ-ra-ên nhận ra đấy là một trong các tiên tri. ⁴²Tiên tri nói tiếp: "Chúa Hằng Hữu phán: 'Vì ngươi tha một kẻ Ta định cho chết, nên mạng ngươi phải đền mạng nó dân ngươi chịu số phận dân nó."' ⁴³Vua Y-sơ-ra-ên về Sa-ma-ri vừa phiền vừa giận.
