Ahab Defeats the Syrians

¹Now ⚓Ben-Hadad the king of Syria gathered all his forces together; thirty-two kings were with him, with horses and chariots. And he went up and besieged ⚓Samaria, and made war against it. ²Then he sent messengers into the city to Ahab king of Israel, and said to him, “Thus says Ben-Hadad: ³‘Your silver and your gold are mine; your loveliest wives and children are mine.’ ”
⁴And the king of Israel answered and said, “My lord, O king, just as you say, I and all that I have are yours.”
⁵Then the messengers came back and said, “Thus speaks Ben-Hadad, saying, ‘Indeed I have sent to you, saying, “You shall deliver to me your silver and your gold, your wives and your children”; ⁶but I will send my servants to you tomorrow about this time, and they shall search your house and the houses of your servants. And it shall be, that whatever is pleasant in your eyes, they will put it in their hands and take it.’ ”
⁷So the king of Israel called all the elders of the land, and said, “Notice, please, and see how this man seeks trouble, for he sent to me for my wives, my children, my silver, and my gold; and I did not deny him.”
⁸And all the elders and all the people said to him, “Do not listen or consent.”
⁹Therefore he said to the messengers of Ben-Hadad, “Tell my lord the king, ‘All that you sent for to your servant the first time I will do, but this thing I cannot do.’ ”
And the messengers departed and brought back word to him.
¹⁰Then Ben-Hadad sent to him and said, ⚓“The gods do so to me, and more also, if enough dust is left of Samaria for a handful for each of the people who follow me.”
¹¹So the king of Israel answered and said, “Tell him, ‘Let not the one who puts on his armor⚓boast like the one who takes it off.’ ”
¹²And it happened when Ben-Hadad heard this message, as he and the kings were⚓drinking at the command post, that he said to his servants, “Get ready.” And they got ready to attack the city.
¹³Suddenly a prophet approached Ahab king of Israel, saying, “Thus says the Lord: ‘Have you seen all this great multitude? Behold, ⚓I will deliver it into your hand today, and you shall know that I am the Lord.’ ”
¹⁴So Ahab said, “By whom?”
And he said, “Thus says the Lord: ‘By the young leaders of the provinces.’ ”
Then he said, “Who will set the battle in order?”
And he answered, “You.”
¹⁵Then he mustered the young leaders of the provinces, and there were two hundred and thirty-two; and after them he mustered all the people, all the children of Israel—seven thousand.
¹⁶So they went out at noon. Meanwhile Ben-Hadad and the thirty-two kings helping him were ⚓getting drunk at the command post. ¹⁷The young leaders of the provinces went out first. And Ben-Hadad sent out a patrol, and they told him, saying, “Men are coming out of Samaria!” ¹⁸So he said, “If they have come out for peace, take them alive; and if they have come out for war, take them alive.”
¹⁹Then these young leaders of the provinces went out of the city with the army which followed them. ²⁰And each one killed his man; so the Syrians fled, and Israel pursued them; and Ben-Hadad the king of Syria escaped on a horse with the cavalry. ²¹Then the king of Israel went out and attacked the horses and chariots, and killed the Syrians with a great slaughter.
²²And the prophet came to the king of Israel and said to him, “Go, strengthen yourself; take note, and see what you should do, ⚓for in the spring of the year the king of Syria will come up against you.”

The Syrians Again Defeated

²³Then the servants of the king of Syria said to him, “Their gods are gods of the hills. Therefore they were stronger than we; but if we fight against them in the plain, surely we will be stronger than they. ²⁴So do this thing: Dismiss the kings, each from his position, and put captains in their places; ²⁵and you shall muster an army like the army that you have lost, horse for horse and chariot for chariot. Then we will fight against them in the plain; surely we will be stronger than they.”
And he listened to their voice and did so.
²⁶So it was, in the spring of the year, that Ben-Hadad mustered the Syrians and went up to ⚓Aphek to fight against Israel. ²⁷And the children of Israel were mustered and given provisions, and they went against them. Now the children of Israel encamped before them like two little flocks of goats, while the Syrians filled the ⚓countryside.
²⁸Then a ⚓man of God came and spoke to the king of Israel, and said, “Thus says the Lord: ‘Because the Syrians have said, “The Lordis God of the hills, but He is not God of the valleys,” therefore ⚓I will deliver all this great multitude into your hand, and you shall know that I am the Lord.’ ” ²⁹And they encamped opposite each other for seven days. So it was that on the seventh day the battle was joined; and the children of Israel killed one hundred thousand foot soldiers of the Syrians in one day. ³⁰But the rest fled to Aphek, into the city; then a wall fell on twenty-seven thousand of the men who were left.
And Ben-Hadad fled and went into the city, into an inner chamber.

Ahab’s Treaty with Ben-Hadad

³¹Then his servants said to him, “Look now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings. Please, let us ⚓put sackcloth around our waists and ropes around our heads, and go out to the king of Israel; perhaps he will spare your life.” ³²So they wore sackcloth around their waists and put ropes around their heads, and came to the king of Israel and said, “Your servant Ben-Hadad says, ‘Please let me live.’ ”
And he said, “Is he still alive? He is my brother.”
³³Now the men were watching closely to see whether any sign of mercy would come from him; and they quickly grasped at this word and said, “Your brother Ben-Hadad.”
So he said, “Go, bring him.” Then Ben-Hadad came out to him; and he had him come up into the chariot.
³⁴So Ben-Hadad said to him, ⚓“The cities which my father took from your father I will restore; and you may set up marketplaces for yourself in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria.”
Then Ahab said, “I will send you away with this treaty.” So he made a treaty with him and sent him away.

Ahab Condemned

³⁵Now a certain man of ⚓the sons of the prophets said to his neighbor ⚓by the word of the Lord, “Strike me, please.” And the man refused to strike him. ³⁶Then he said to him, “Because you have not obeyed the voice of the Lord, surely, as soon as you depart from me, a lion shall kill you.” And as soon as he left him, ⚓a lion found him and killed him.
³⁷And he found another man, and said, “Strike me, please.” So the man struck him, inflicting a wound. ³⁸Then the prophet departed and waited for the king by the road, and disguised himself with a bandage over his eyes. ³⁹Now ⚓as the king passed by, he cried out to the king and said, “Your servant went out into the midst of the battle; and there, a man came over and brought a man to me, and said, ‘Guard this man; if by any means he is missing, ⚓your life shall be for his life, or else you shall pay a talent of silver.’ ⁴⁰While your servant was busy here and there, he was gone.”
Then the king of Israel said to him, “So shall your judgment be; you yourself have decided it.”
⁴¹And he hastened to take the bandage away from his eyes; and the king of Israel recognized him as one of the prophets. ⁴²Then he said to him, “Thus says the Lord: ⚓‘Because you have let slip out of your hand a man whom I appointed to utter destruction, therefore your life shall go for his life, and your people for his people.’ ”
⁴³So the king of Israel ⚓went to his house sullen and displeased, and came to Samaria.

Bên-Ha-đát và A-háp giao chiến nhau

⁴A-háp vua Ít-ra-en trả lời, “Thưa vua chúa, tôi đồng ý với điều Ngài nói. Tôi và những gì thuộc về tôi đều là của Ngài.”
⁵Rồi sứ giả trở lại A-háp lần nữa và nói, “Bên-Ha-đát nói, ‘Trước đây ta bảo ngươi phải giao vàng bạc và vợ con cho ta. ⁶Khoảng giờ nầy ngày mai ta sẽ sai người của ta đến lục soát khắp nơi trong cung điện của ngươi và nhà cửa của các quần thần ngươi. Những gì họ thích, họ đều sẽ lấy mang đi hết.’”
⁷A-háp liền triệu tập các bô lão trong xứ. Ông nói, “Bên-Ha-đát đang kiếm chuyện lôi thôi với chúng ta. Trước tiên ông bắt ta giao vợ con, vàng bạc của ta và ta bằng lòng.”
⁸Các bô lão cùng toàn dân bảo, “Đừng thèm nghe ông ta cũng đừng ưng thuận chuyện nầy.”
⁹Vậy A-háp trả lời với các sứ giả của Bên-Ha-đát, “Xin nói với vua chúa tôi như sau: ‘Tôi sẽ làm điều vua chúa tôi nói lần đầu nhưng tôi không thể ưng thuận điều đòi hỏi thứ nhì.’”
Các sứ giả liền mang lời nhắn về cho vua Bên-Ha-đát. ¹⁰Bên-Ha-đát liền nhắn một lần nữa cho A-háp, “Nếu ta không hủy diệt Xa-ma-ri, nguyện các thần phạt ta thật nặng. Sẽ không còn đủ bụi cho quân ta hốt mỗi người một nắm tay.”
¹¹A-háp trả lời, “Xin bảo Bên-Ha-đát là ‘Người mặc áo giáp vào không nên khoe khoang như người sống lâu mà cởi áo giáp ra.’”
¹²Khi sứ giả mang lời nhắn về thì Bên-Ha-đát đang ở trong lều uống rượu cùng với các vua khác. Bên-Ha-đát liền ra lệnh cho quân sĩ chuẩn bị tấn công thành. Thế là họ ngồi vào vị trí tác chiến.
¹³Lúc đó có một nhà tiên tri đến gặp A-háp vua Ít-ra-en. Nhà tiên tri nói, “Hỡi A-háp, CHÚA bảo ngươi, ‘Ngươi có thấy quân đội đông đảo đó không? Hôm nay ta sẽ trao nó vào tay ngươi để ngươi biết rằng ta là CHÚA.’”
¹⁴A-háp hỏi, “Phải dùng ai để đánh bại chúng?”
Nhà nhà tiên tri đáp, “CHÚA phán, ‘Các sĩ quan trẻ thuộc các thống đốc vùng sẽ đánh bại chúng.’”
Vua hỏi tiếp, “Vậy ai sẽ chỉ huy lực lượng chính?”
Nhà tiên tri đáp, “Chính vua.”
¹⁵Vậy A-háp tập họp các sĩ quan trẻ thuộc các thống đốc vùng gồm hai trăm ba mươi hai người. Rồi ông triệu tập quân Ít-ra-en, tất cả khoảng bảy ngàn người.
¹⁶Họ tiến quân ra lúc giữa trưa trong khi Bên-Ha-đát và ba mươi hai vua trợ lực ông đang say sưa trong lều. ¹⁷Các sĩ quan trẻ thuộc các thống đốc vùng tấn công trước. Bên-Ha-đát phái các toán tình báo về thuật rằng có quân lính từ Xa-ma-ri đến. ¹⁸Bên-Ha-đát ra lệnh, “Dù chúng đến để tranh chiến hay để xin hòa thì cũng đều bắt sống hết.”
¹⁹Các sĩ quan trẻ thuộc các thống đốc vùng hướng dẫn cuộc tấn công, sau đó là đạo quân Ít-ra-en. ²⁰Mỗi sĩ quan trong Ít-ra-en giết người nào đến tấn công mình. Quân A-ram bỏ chạy còn quân Ít-ra-en đuổi theo. Bên-Ha-đát, vua A-ram cỡi ngựa chạy thoát cùng một số lính kỵ mã. ²¹A-háp, vua Ít-ra-en, hướng dẫn quân lính và tiêu diệt ngựa cùng quân xa của A-ram. Vua A-háp hoàn toàn đánh bại đạo quân A-ram.
²²Sau đó nhà tiên tri đến bảo A-háp, vua Ít-ra-en, rằng, “Vua A-ram sẽ trở lại tấn công vua lần nữa vào mùa xuân năm sau. Cho nên vua hãy trở về củng cố lại quân ngũ để đối phó.”

Bên-Ha-Đát lại tấn công nữa

²³Trong khi đó các sĩ quan Bên-Ha-đát, vua A-ram bảo, “Thần của Ít-ra-en là thần núi. Vì chúng ta đánh trong vùng núi cho nên chúng ta thua quân Ít-ra-en. Hãy đánh chúng trong vùng đồng bằng, chắc chắn chúng ta sẽ thắng. ²⁴Vua phải làm thế nầy. Đừng để ba mươi hai vua chỉ huy quân lực nữa mà, hãy đặt các cấp chỉ huy khác. ²⁵Hãy triệu tập quân đội tương tự như toán quân đã bị tiêu diệt, cùng số ngựa và quân xa như trước. Chúng ta sẽ đánh dân Ít-ra-en trong đồng bằng, chúng ta sẽ thắng.” Bên-Ha-đát đồng ý với lời đề nghị đó và làm y như vậy.
²⁶Mùa xuân năm sau Bên-Ha-đát triệu tập quân đội A-ram và kéo lên A-phéc tấn công Ít-ra-en.
²⁷Quân Ít-ra-en cũng đã chuẩn bị sẵn sàng nghênh chiến. Họ kéo quân ra gặp quân A-ram và đóng quân đối diện chúng. Quân Ít-ra-en giống như hai bầy dê nhỏ còn quân A-ram thì lan tràn khắp vùng.
²⁸Một người của Thượng Đế đến bảo vua Ít-ra-en như sau: “CHÚA phán, ‘Quân A-ram bảo rằng ta là thần núi, không phải thần thung lũng nên ta sẽ cho ngươi đánh bại đạo quân khổng lồ nầy, rồi ngươi sẽ biết ta là CHÚA.’”
²⁹Hai lực lượng đóng quân đối diện nhau trong bảy ngày. Đến ngày thứ bảy trận chiến bắt đầu. Quân Ít-ra-en giết một ngàn quân A-ram trong một ngày. ³⁰Số còn lại chạy trốn đến thành A-phéc, bị vách thành ngã đè chết hai mươi bảy ngàn người. Bên-Ha-đát cũng chạy trốn vào thành và núp trong một phòng. ³¹Các sĩ quan của ông bảo, “Chúng tôi nghe nói các vua Ít-ra-en rất nhân hậu. Chúng tôi sẽ ăn mặc vải sô, lấy dây quấn đầu⚓ rồi đi đến gặp vua Ít-ra-en, rất có thể ông ta sẽ để cho bệ hạ sống.”
³²Vậy họ mặc vải sô, quấn dây trên đầu đi đến gặp vua Ít-ra-en. Họ thưa, “Bên-Ha-đát, kẻ tôi tớ vua xin, ‘Hãy để cho tôi sống.’”
A-háp hỏi, “Người vẫn còn sống sao? Người là anh em ta.”⚓
³³Những người từ Bên-Ha-đát muốn có một dấu hiệu gì từ A-háp. Cho nên khi A-háp gọi Bên-Ha-đát là anh mình họ liền bảo, “Vâng! Bên-Ha-đát là anh em của vua.”
A-háp bảo, “Hãy mang người đến cho ta.” Khi Bên-Ha-đát đến thì A-háp mời ông cùng đi chung quân xa mới mình.
³⁴Bên-Ha-đát bảo vua, “Thưa vua A-háp, tôi sẽ trả lại cho ngài những thành mà cha tôi đã chiếm lấy từ cha ngài. Ngài có thể đặt cơ sở buôn bán ở Đa-mách như cha tôi đã làm ở Xa-ma-ri.”
A-háp đáp, “Nếu anh đồng ý như thế thì tôi sẽ trả anh về tự do.” Vậy hai vua liền lập giao ước với nhau. Rồi A-háp để cho Bên-Ha-đát về tự do.

Một nhà tiên tri tuyên bố
nghịch cùng A-háp

³⁵Một nhà tiên tri trong nhóm những tiên tri bảo bạn mình, “Hãy đánh tôi đi!” Ông bảo vậy vì CHÚA đã truyền lệnh như thế, nhưng người bạn không chịu làm. ³⁶Nhà tiên tri nói, “Vì anh không vâng mệnh lệnh CHÚA cho nên sau khi rời khỏi tôi, anh sẽ bị một con sư tử giết.” Khi người đó ra thì gặp con sư tử và bị nó giết chết.
³⁷Nhà tiên tri bảo một người khác, “Hãy đánh tôi đi!”
Người đó đánh ông bị thương tích. ³⁸Nhà tiên tri lấy khăn che mặt mình để không ai nhận ra. Rồi ông đi, chờ vua bên đường. ³⁹Khi A-háp, vua Ít-ra-en, đi ngang qua, nhà tiên tri kêu lên cùng vua, “Tôi đi ra đánh nhau trong chiến trận. Một trong những binh sĩ của chúng tôi mang một kẻ thù đến cho tôi. Anh dặn, ‘Hãy canh giữ tên nầy cho cẩn thận. Nếu nó trốn thoát thì anh phải lấy mạng mình mà đền. Nếu không anh phải trả bảy mươi lăm cân⚓ bạc.’ ⁴⁰Nhưng trong khi tôi đang bận việc nầy việc nọ thì nó trốn thoát.”
Vua Ít-ra-en đáp, “Ngươi vừa bảo phải bị trừng phạt như thế nào thì phải làm theo như người kia nói.”
⁴¹Nhà tiên tri liền vén khăn che khỏi mặt. Khi vua Ít-ra-en thấy ông thì nhận ra ông là một trong những nhà tiên tri. ⁴²Nhà tiên tri nói cùng vua, “CHÚA phán như sau: ‘Ngươi thả một người mà ta định phải chết, cho nên ngươi phải lấy mạng mình mà thế vào đó. Mạng của dân ngươi sẽ phải đền cho mạng của người đó.’”
⁴³Vua Ít-ra-en đi về cung mình ở Xa-ma-ri, giận dữ và bực tức.
