Ahab Defeats the Syrians

¹Now ⚓Ben-Hadad the king of Syria gathered all his forces together; thirty-two kings were with him, with horses and chariots. And he went up and besieged ⚓Samaria, and made war against it. ²Then he sent messengers into the city to Ahab king of Israel, and said to him, “Thus says Ben-Hadad: ³‘Your silver and your gold are mine; your loveliest wives and children are mine.’ ”
⁴And the king of Israel answered and said, “My lord, O king, just as you say, I and all that I have are yours.”
⁵Then the messengers came back and said, “Thus speaks Ben-Hadad, saying, ‘Indeed I have sent to you, saying, “You shall deliver to me your silver and your gold, your wives and your children”; ⁶but I will send my servants to you tomorrow about this time, and they shall search your house and the houses of your servants. And it shall be, that whatever is pleasant in your eyes, they will put it in their hands and take it.’ ”
⁷So the king of Israel called all the elders of the land, and said, “Notice, please, and see how this man seeks trouble, for he sent to me for my wives, my children, my silver, and my gold; and I did not deny him.”
⁸And all the elders and all the people said to him, “Do not listen or consent.”
⁹Therefore he said to the messengers of Ben-Hadad, “Tell my lord the king, ‘All that you sent for to your servant the first time I will do, but this thing I cannot do.’ ”
And the messengers departed and brought back word to him.
¹⁰Then Ben-Hadad sent to him and said, ⚓“The gods do so to me, and more also, if enough dust is left of Samaria for a handful for each of the people who follow me.”
¹¹So the king of Israel answered and said, “Tell him, ‘Let not the one who puts on his armor⚓boast like the one who takes it off.’ ”
¹²And it happened when Ben-Hadad heard this message, as he and the kings were⚓drinking at the command post, that he said to his servants, “Get ready.” And they got ready to attack the city.
¹³Suddenly a prophet approached Ahab king of Israel, saying, “Thus says the Lord: ‘Have you seen all this great multitude? Behold, ⚓I will deliver it into your hand today, and you shall know that I am the Lord.’ ”
¹⁴So Ahab said, “By whom?”
And he said, “Thus says the Lord: ‘By the young leaders of the provinces.’ ”
Then he said, “Who will set the battle in order?”
And he answered, “You.”
¹⁵Then he mustered the young leaders of the provinces, and there were two hundred and thirty-two; and after them he mustered all the people, all the children of Israel—seven thousand.
¹⁶So they went out at noon. Meanwhile Ben-Hadad and the thirty-two kings helping him were ⚓getting drunk at the command post. ¹⁷The young leaders of the provinces went out first. And Ben-Hadad sent out a patrol, and they told him, saying, “Men are coming out of Samaria!” ¹⁸So he said, “If they have come out for peace, take them alive; and if they have come out for war, take them alive.”
¹⁹Then these young leaders of the provinces went out of the city with the army which followed them. ²⁰And each one killed his man; so the Syrians fled, and Israel pursued them; and Ben-Hadad the king of Syria escaped on a horse with the cavalry. ²¹Then the king of Israel went out and attacked the horses and chariots, and killed the Syrians with a great slaughter.
²²And the prophet came to the king of Israel and said to him, “Go, strengthen yourself; take note, and see what you should do, ⚓for in the spring of the year the king of Syria will come up against you.”

The Syrians Again Defeated

²³Then the servants of the king of Syria said to him, “Their gods are gods of the hills. Therefore they were stronger than we; but if we fight against them in the plain, surely we will be stronger than they. ²⁴So do this thing: Dismiss the kings, each from his position, and put captains in their places; ²⁵and you shall muster an army like the army that you have lost, horse for horse and chariot for chariot. Then we will fight against them in the plain; surely we will be stronger than they.”
And he listened to their voice and did so.
²⁶So it was, in the spring of the year, that Ben-Hadad mustered the Syrians and went up to ⚓Aphek to fight against Israel. ²⁷And the children of Israel were mustered and given provisions, and they went against them. Now the children of Israel encamped before them like two little flocks of goats, while the Syrians filled the ⚓countryside.
²⁸Then a ⚓man of God came and spoke to the king of Israel, and said, “Thus says the Lord: ‘Because the Syrians have said, “The Lordis God of the hills, but He is not God of the valleys,” therefore ⚓I will deliver all this great multitude into your hand, and you shall know that I am the Lord.’ ” ²⁹And they encamped opposite each other for seven days. So it was that on the seventh day the battle was joined; and the children of Israel killed one hundred thousand foot soldiers of the Syrians in one day. ³⁰But the rest fled to Aphek, into the city; then a wall fell on twenty-seven thousand of the men who were left.
And Ben-Hadad fled and went into the city, into an inner chamber.

Ahab’s Treaty with Ben-Hadad

³¹Then his servants said to him, “Look now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings. Please, let us ⚓put sackcloth around our waists and ropes around our heads, and go out to the king of Israel; perhaps he will spare your life.” ³²So they wore sackcloth around their waists and put ropes around their heads, and came to the king of Israel and said, “Your servant Ben-Hadad says, ‘Please let me live.’ ”
And he said, “Is he still alive? He is my brother.”
³³Now the men were watching closely to see whether any sign of mercy would come from him; and they quickly grasped at this word and said, “Your brother Ben-Hadad.”
So he said, “Go, bring him.” Then Ben-Hadad came out to him; and he had him come up into the chariot.
³⁴So Ben-Hadad said to him, ⚓“The cities which my father took from your father I will restore; and you may set up marketplaces for yourself in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria.”
Then Ahab said, “I will send you away with this treaty.” So he made a treaty with him and sent him away.

Ahab Condemned

³⁵Now a certain man of ⚓the sons of the prophets said to his neighbor ⚓by the word of the Lord, “Strike me, please.” And the man refused to strike him. ³⁶Then he said to him, “Because you have not obeyed the voice of the Lord, surely, as soon as you depart from me, a lion shall kill you.” And as soon as he left him, ⚓a lion found him and killed him.
³⁷And he found another man, and said, “Strike me, please.” So the man struck him, inflicting a wound. ³⁸Then the prophet departed and waited for the king by the road, and disguised himself with a bandage over his eyes. ³⁹Now ⚓as the king passed by, he cried out to the king and said, “Your servant went out into the midst of the battle; and there, a man came over and brought a man to me, and said, ‘Guard this man; if by any means he is missing, ⚓your life shall be for his life, or else you shall pay a talent of silver.’ ⁴⁰While your servant was busy here and there, he was gone.”
Then the king of Israel said to him, “So shall your judgment be; you yourself have decided it.”
⁴¹And he hastened to take the bandage away from his eyes; and the king of Israel recognized him as one of the prophets. ⁴²Then he said to him, “Thus says the Lord: ⚓‘Because you have let slip out of your hand a man whom I appointed to utter destruction, therefore your life shall go for his life, and your people for his people.’ ”
⁴³So the king of Israel ⚓went to his house sullen and displeased, and came to Samaria.

Vợ đẹp con xinh hơn hết của ngươi cũng thuộc về ta.’” ⁴Vua Y-sơ-ra-ên đáp: “Thưa đức vua là chúa tôi, cứ như lời ngài nói, tôi và mọi vật của tôi đều thuộc về ngài.”
⁵Nhưng các sứ giả trở lại cùng vua Y-sơ-ra-ên và nói: “Bên Ha-đát bảo thế nầy: ‘Ta đã sai sứ đến nói với ngươi rằng: “Hãy đưa bạc vàng và vợ con ngươi cho ta.” ⁶Ngoài ra, ngày mai vào giờ nầy, ta sẽ sai các đầy tớ ta đến với ngươi, chúng sẽ lục soát cung điện ngươi và nhà của quần thần ngươi. Bất cứ món gì ngươi coi là quý, chúng sẽ lấy và đem đi hết.’”
⁷Vua Y-sơ-ra-ên mời tất cả trưởng lão trong nước đến, và nói với họ: “Các ông hãy biết và thấy rõ rằng người nầy đang tìm cách hại chúng ta. Vì người đã sai sứ đòi trẫm phải nộp vợ con, bạc vàng, và trẫm đã không từ chối gì hết.”
⁸Các trưởng lão và tất cả dân chúng đều tâu với vua: “Xin bệ hạ đừng nghe, cũng đừng chấp nhận gì cả.” ⁹Vậy, A-háp đáp cùng sứ giả của Bên Ha-đát rằng: “Hãy tâu với đức vua là chúa tôi: ‘Mọi điều đức vua đòi hỏi lần trước thì tôi là đầy tớ ngài sẽ làm; nhưng lần nầy thì tôi không thể làm được.’” Các sứ giả về thuật lại lời đó cho Bên Ha-đát.
¹⁰Bên Ha-đát lại sai sứ nói rằng: “Nếu bụi đất ở Sa-ma-ri đủ cho các chiến sĩ ta mỗi người một nắm, nguyện các thần giáng tai họa cho ta cách nặng nề!” ¹¹Nhưng vua Y-sơ-ra-ên đáp: “Hãy nói với vua rằng: ‘Người mặc áo giáp chớ khoe mình như người cởi nó ra.’”
¹²Bên Ha-đát đang uống rượu với các vua trong trại, vừa nghe các lời đó, liền ra lệnh cho các đầy tớ mình: “Hãy dàn trận đi!” Chúng liền dàn trận để tấn công thành.

A-háp đánh bại Bên Ha-đát

¹³Lúc ấy, có một nhà tiên tri đến gặp A-háp, vua Y-sơ-ra-ên, và nói: “Đức Giê-hô-va phán: ‘Con thấy đoàn quân rất đông nầy chăng? Kìa, ngày nay Ta sẽ phó chúng vào tay con, và con sẽ biết Ta là Giê-hô-va.’” ¹⁴A-háp hỏi: “Ai sẽ ra trận?” Người ấy đáp: “Đức Giê-hô-va phán: ‘Những viên chức của các quan đầu tỉnh.’” Vua hỏi tiếp: “Ai sẽ khai chiến?” Nhà tiên tri đáp: “Chính vua!” ¹⁵A-háp duyệt lại số viên chức của các quan đầu tỉnh, có tất cả hai trăm ba mươi hai người. Sau đó, vua điểm lại toàn quân Y-sơ-ra-ên, được bảy nghìn người.
¹⁶Giữa trưa, trong khi Bên Ha-đát uống rượu say trong trại mình cùng với ba mươi hai vua đồng minh, thì người Y-sơ-ra-ên kéo quân ra. ¹⁷Những viên chức trẻ của các quan đầu tỉnh đi ra trước. Bên Ha-đát sai người quan sát. Họ báo lại cho vua: “Có người từ Sa-ma-ri kéo ra.” ¹⁸Vua nói: “Dù chúng đến có ý cầu hòa, hoặc có ý khiêu chiến, cũng hãy bắt sống chúng.”
¹⁹Những viên chức trẻ của các quan đầu tỉnh kéo ra ngoài thành, và đạo quân đi theo. ²⁰Họ giao chiến với kẻ thù. Quân A-ram tháo chạy, và quân Y-sơ-ra-ên truy đuổi. Bên Ha-đát, vua A-ram, lên ngựa chạy thoát với một vài kỵ binh. ²¹Vua Y-sơ-ra-ên kéo ra tấn công ngựa và chiến xa, đánh bại quân A-ram và gây tổn thất nặng nề cho họ.
²²Bấy giờ, nhà tiên tri đến gặp vua Y-sơ-ra-ên và nói: “Vua hãy đi củng cố lực lượng, và xem xét kỹ điều mình phải làm, vì năm tới vua A-ram sẽ trở lại đánh vua.”

A-háp lại thắng quân A-ram lần nữa

²³Các triều thần của vua A-ram nói với người rằng: “Thần của chúng là thần núi, nên chúng mạnh hơn chúng ta. Nhưng nếu giao chiến với chúng dưới đồng bằng, chắc chắn chúng ta sẽ chiến thắng chúng nó. ²⁴Xin bệ hạ làm thế nầy: Thay các vua bằng các tướng chỉ huy, ²⁵rồi tuyển mộ một đạo quân như đạo quân đã mất, với số ngựa và xe bằng lần trước. Chúng ta sẽ giao chiến với dân Y-sơ-ra-ên trong đồng bằng, chắc chắn chúng ta sẽ thắng.” Vua nghe và làm theo lời các triều thần.
²⁶Đầu năm sau, Bên Ha-đát điểm quân A-ram và kéo đến A-phéc để giao chiến với Y-sơ-ra-ên. ²⁷Người Y-sơ-ra-ên cũng điểm quân, chuẩn bị lương thực, và ra nghênh chiến. Quân Y-sơ-ra-ên đóng trại đối diện quân A-ram. Họ giống như hai bầy dê nhỏ, còn quân A-ram tràn ngập khắp xứ.
²⁸Bấy giờ, người của Đức Chúa Trời đến gần vua Y-sơ-ra-ên mà nói rằng: “Đức Giê-hô-va phán: Vì người A-ram nói rằng: ‘Đức Giê-hô-va là thần núi chứ không phải thần thung lũng,’ nên Ta sẽ phó đoàn quân rất đông đảo nầy vào tay con, và các con sẽ biết Ta là Giê-hô-va.”
²⁹Hai bên đóng trại đối diện nhau trong bảy ngày. Vào ngày thứ bảy, cuộc chiến bùng nổ. Trong một ngày, dân Y-sơ-ra-ên đánh giết một trăm nghìn bộ binh A-ram. ³⁰Tàn quân chạy trốn trong thành A-phéc, nhưng các tường thành đổ xuống, đè lên hai mươi bảy nghìn người còn sót lại. Bên Ha-đát cũng chạy trốn vào thành, ẩn trong một phòng kín.
³¹Các đầy tớ Bên Ha-đát tâu với vua: “Chúng tôi nghe nói các vua nhà Y-sơ-ra-ên vốn nhân từ. Vì vậy, xin cho chúng tôi lấy vải bố thắt lưng và quấn dây trên đầu, rồi chúng tôi ra hàng vua Y-sơ-ra-ên; may ra vua ấy để cho bệ hạ sống chăng!” ³²Vậy, họ lấy vải bố thắt lưng và quấn dây trên đầu, rồi ra hàng vua Y-sơ-ra-ên, và tâu rằng: “Đầy tớ của bệ hạ là Bên Ha-đát cầu xin với bệ hạ rằng: ‘Xin để cho tôi sống.’” A-háp đáp: “Vua ấy còn sống chăng? Người vốn là anh em ta.”
³³Những người đó thấy có điềm lành, vội vàng nhận ngay lời ấy và nói: “Vâng, Bên Ha-đát là anh em của bệ hạ.” A-háp nói tiếp: “Hãy đưa ông ấy đến gặp ta.” Bên Ha-đát đến ra mắt A-háp, vua mời Bên Ha-đát lên xe của mình. ³⁴Bên Ha-đát nói với A-háp: “Tôi xin trả lại cho ngài các thành mà cha tôi đã chiếm của cha ngài, và ngài có thể thiết lập phố chợ tại Đa-mách, như cha tôi đã làm tại Sa-ma-ri.” A-háp đáp: “Tôi chấp thuận thỏa ước nầy và sẽ để cho ngài ra đi.” Thế rồi A-háp lập thỏa ước với Bên Ha-đát, và để cho vua ấy ra về.

Một nhà tiên tri kết tội A-háp

³⁵Bấy giờ, có một người trong số các nhà tiên tri, vâng lệnh Đức Giê-hô-va, nói với bạn mình: “Xin anh đánh tôi đi!” Nhưng người bạn không chịu đánh. ³⁶Người ấy nói tiếp: “Vì anh không vâng lời Đức Giê-hô-va nên ngay sau khi anh rời khỏi tôi, sẽ có một con sư tử giết anh.” Khi người bạn vừa rời khỏi nhà tiên tri thì gặp một con sư tử vồ anh ta chết.⚓ ³⁷Nhà tiên tri gặp một người khác, và nói: “Xin anh đánh tôi đi!” Người ấy đánh nhà tiên tri và làm cho ông bị thương. ³⁸Rồi nhà tiên tri đi và đứng bên đường đợi vua đi qua. Ông lấy vải che mặt để giả dạng. ³⁹Khi vua đi ngang qua, ông kêu la với vua rằng: “Đầy tớ của bệ hạ đang ở giữa chiến trận thì có người dẫn đến một tù binh, và bảo: ‘Hãy canh giữ người nầy, nếu để nó chạy thoát thì mạng anh phải đền mạng nó, hoặc anh phải đền ba mươi ký⚓ bạc.’ ⁴⁰Nhưng trong khi đầy tớ của bệ hạ đang bận việc nầy việc nọ thì tên tù binh trốn mất.” Vua Y-sơ-ra-ên liền nói với người ấy: “Đó là án phạt của ngươi, chính ngươi đã tuyên án cho mình.” ⁴¹Lập tức người ấy vén tấm vải che mặt mình lên, và vua Y-sơ-ra-ên nhận ra đó là một trong các nhà tiên tri. ⁴²Nhà tiên tri nói: “Đức Giê-hô-va phán: ‘Vì con đã để thoát khỏi tay mình kẻ mà Ta đã định phải bị tận diệt, nên mạng con phải đền mạng nó và dân con thế cho dân nó.’” ⁴³Vua Y-sơ-ra-ên trở về cung điện tại Sa-ma-ri, cảm thấy buồn rầu và tức giận.
