John the Baptist Prepares the Way

¹In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene— ²during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. ³He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. ⁴As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:
“A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.
⁵Every valley shall be filled in,
every mountain and hill made low.
The crooked roads shall become straight,
the rough ways smooth.
⁶And all people will see God’s salvation.’ ”⚓
⁷John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? ⁸Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. ⁹The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”
¹⁰“What should we do then?” the crowd asked.
¹¹John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”
¹²Even tax collectors came to be baptized. “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”
¹³“Don’t collect any more than you are required to,” he told them.
¹⁴Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”
He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely—be content with your pay.”
¹⁵The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Messiah. ¹⁶John answered them all, “I baptize you with⚓ water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with⚓ the Holy Spirit and fire. ¹⁷His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” ¹⁸And with many other words John exhorted the people and proclaimed the good news to them.
¹⁹But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of his marriage to Herodias, his brother’s wife, and all the other evil things he had done, ²⁰Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison.

The Baptism and Genealogy of Jesus

²¹When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened ²²and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
²³Now Jesus himself was about thirty years old when he began his ministry. He was the son, so it was thought, of Joseph,
the son of Heli, ²⁴the son of Matthat,
the son of Levi, the son of Melki,
the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph,
²⁵the son of Mattathias, the son of Amos,
the son of Nahum, the son of Esli,
the son of Naggai, ²⁶the son of Maath,
the son of Mattathias, the son of Semein,
the son of Josek, the son of Joda,
²⁷the son of Joanan, the son of Rhesa,
the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel,
the son of Neri, ²⁸the son of Melki,
the son of Addi, the son of Cosam,
the son of Elmadam, the son of Er,
²⁹the son of Joshua, the son of Eliezer,
the son of Jorim, the son of Matthat,

Lời giảng của Giăng

¹Vào năm thứ mười lăm triều đại Xê-xa Ti-bê-ri; những nhân vật sau đây ở dưới quyền Xê-xa:
Bôn-ti Phi-lát cai quản miền Giu-đia;
Hê-rốt cai trị miền Ga-li-lê;
Phi-líp, em Hê-rốt, cai trị miền Y-tu-ria và Tra-cô-ni;
và Ly-xa-nia cai quản miền A-bi-len.
²An-na và Cai-pha làm chức tế lễ tối cao. Lúc ấy có lời của Thượng Đế bảo với Giăng, con của Xa-cha-ri trong đồng hoang. ³Ông đi khắp vùng quanh sông Giô-đanh giảng lễ báp-têm về sự ăn năn để được tha tội. ⁴Như sách tiên tri Ê-sai viết:
“Đây là tiếng của người kêu trong sa mạc:
‘Hãy chuẩn bị đường cho Chúa.
San phẳng lối đi cho Ngài.
⁵Mọi thung lũng phải được lấp bằng,
và mọi núi đồi phải được san phẳng.
Đường quanh co phải sửa cho ngay,
những lối đi gồ ghề phải san bằng.
⁶Mọi người sẽ biết sự cứu rỗi của Thượng Đế!’” Ê-sai 40:3-5
⁷Giăng bảo những người đến để chịu lễ báp-têm rằng, “Mấy anh là loài rắn độc! Ai đã cảnh cáo để các anh tránh khỏi cơn trừng phạt sắp đến của Thượng Đế? ⁸Hãy kết quả để chứng tỏ mình đã thực sự ăn năn. Đừng tự khoe, ‘Áp-ra-ham là ông tổ chúng tôi.’ Tôi nói cho các anh biết rằng Thượng Đế có thể biến các viên đá nầy ra con cháu Áp-ra-ham được đó. ⁹Bây giờ cái rìu đã đặt nơi rễ cây, sẵn sàng để đốn. Cây nào không sinh trái tốt đều sẽ bị chặt hết để chụm lửa.”⚓
¹⁰Dân chúng hỏi Giăng, “Vậy chúng tôi phải làm gì?”
¹¹Giăng đáp, “Nếu ai có hai áo, hãy chia một cái cho người không có áo. Còn ai có thức ăn, cũng làm như vậy.”
¹²Ngay cả những nhân viên thu thuế cũng đến với Giăng để chịu lễ báp-têm. Họ hỏi, “Thưa thầy, chúng tôi phải làm gì?”
¹³Giăng đáp, “Đừng đòi nhiều hơn số thuế mà các ông được chỉ thị phải thu.”
¹⁴Các quân nhân cũng hỏi, “Còn chúng tôi thì sao? Chúng tôi phải làm gì?”
Giăng trả lời, “Đừng cướp đoạt tiền của dân chúng, và cũng đừng lường gạt họ. Hãy bằng lòng về lương bổng của mình.”
¹⁵Vì dân chúng đang trông mong Đấng Cứu Thế đến nên họ tự hỏi không biết Giăng có phải là Đấng ấy không.
¹⁶Giăng bảo với mọi người, “Tôi làm lễ báp-têm cho các anh bằng nước, nhưng có một Đấng sẽ đến, còn cao trọng hơn tôi. Tôi không xứng đáng cúi xuống mở dép cho Ngài. Ngài sẽ làm báp-têm cho các anh bằng Thánh Linh và bằng lửa. ¹⁷Ngài đến để dùng nia sàng sạch sân lúa, tách lúa và trấu ra. Lúa thì chứa vào vựa còn trấu thì đốt hết trong lửa không bao giờ tắt.”⚓ ¹⁸Giăng còn giảng thêm nữa về Tin Mừng, dùng nhiều điều để khích lệ dân chúng.

Công tác của Giăng chấm dứt

¹⁹Nhưng Giăng can ngăn Hê-rốt, là quan tổng đốc, vì Hê-rốt phạm tội với Hê-rô-đia, vợ của em trai mình và vì những điều độc ác khác mà Hê-rốt làm. ²⁰Hê-rốt lại còn làm một điều tệ hại hơn nữa là tống giam Giăng vào ngục.

Giăng làm lễ Báp-têm cho Chúa Giê-xu

²¹Khi Giăng làm lễ báp-têm thì Chúa Giê-xu cũng chịu báp-têm cùng với mọi người. Trong khi Ngài đang cầu nguyện thì thiên đàng mở ra. ²²Thánh Linh lấy dạng chim bồ câu đậu trên Ngài. Rồi có tiếng vọng từ thiên đàng rằng, “Con là Con yêu dấu của ta, ta rất vừa lòng về con.”

²³Khi Chúa Giê-xu bắt đầu thi hành chức vụ thì Ngài độ ba mươi tuổi. Người ta tin rằng Ngài là con Giô-xép.
