John the Baptist Prepares the Way

¹In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene— ²during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. ³He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. ⁴As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:
“A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.
⁵Every valley shall be filled in,
every mountain and hill made low.
The crooked roads shall become straight,
the rough ways smooth.
⁶And all people will see God’s salvation.’ ”⚓
⁷John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? ⁸Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. ⁹The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”
¹⁰“What should we do then?” the crowd asked.
¹¹John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”
¹²Even tax collectors came to be baptized. “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”
¹³“Don’t collect any more than you are required to,” he told them.
¹⁴Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”
He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely—be content with your pay.”
¹⁵The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Messiah. ¹⁶John answered them all, “I baptize you with⚓ water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with⚓ the Holy Spirit and fire. ¹⁷His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” ¹⁸And with many other words John exhorted the people and proclaimed the good news to them.
¹⁹But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of his marriage to Herodias, his brother’s wife, and all the other evil things he had done, ²⁰Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison.

The Baptism and Genealogy of Jesus

²¹When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened ²²and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
²³Now Jesus himself was about thirty years old when he began his ministry. He was the son, so it was thought, of Joseph,
the son of Heli, ²⁴the son of Matthat,
the son of Levi, the son of Melki,
the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph,
²⁵the son of Mattathias, the son of Amos,
the son of Nahum, the son of Esli,
the son of Naggai, ²⁶the son of Maath,
the son of Mattathias, the son of Semein,
the son of Josek, the son of Joda,
²⁷the son of Joanan, the son of Rhesa,
the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel,
the son of Neri, ²⁸the son of Melki,
the son of Addi, the son of Cosam,
the son of Elmadam, the son of Er,
²⁹the son of Joshua, the son of Eliezer,
the son of Jorim, the son of Matthat,
the son of Levi, ³⁰the son of Simeon,

Chức vụ của Giăng Báp-tít

¹Năm thứ mười lăm dưới triều Sê-sa Ti-be-rơ — khi Pôn-xơ Phi-lát làm tổng đốc xứ Giu-đê; Hê-rốt làm vua chư hầu xứ Ga-li-lê; Phi-líp, em vua ấy, làm vua chư hầu xứ Y-tu-rê và Tra-cô-nít; Ly-sa-ni-a làm vua chư hầu xứ A-by-len; ²An-ne và Cai-phe làm thầy tế lễ thượng phẩm — thì có lời Đức Chúa Trời truyền cho Giăng, con Xa-cha-ri, trong hoang mạc. ³Giăng đi khắp các vùng lân cận sông Giô-đanh, rao giảng báp-têm về sự ăn năn để được tha tội, ⁴như lời đã chép trong sách tiên tri Ê-sai:
“Có tiếng người kêu lên trong hoang mạc:
Hãy dọn đường cho Chúa, làm thẳng các lối Ngài.
⁵Mọi thung lũng phải lấp cho đầy,
Mọi núi đồi phải ban cho thấp;
Đường cong quẹo phải sửa cho ngay,
Lối gập ghềnh phải làm cho phẳng;
⁶Và cả nhân loại sẽ thấy ơn cứu rỗi của Đức Chúa Trời.” ⚓
⁷Vì thế, Giăng nói với đoàn dân đến để ông làm báp-têm rằng: “Hỡi dòng giống rắn độc kia, ai đã báo cho các người biết để chạy trốn cơn thịnh nộ sắp đến?⚓ ⁸Vậy, hãy kết quả xứng đáng với sự ăn năn; đừng tự nhủ: ‘Áp-ra-ham là tổ phụ chúng tôi’; vì tôi nói với các người, Đức Chúa Trời có thể khiến những viên đá nầy trở thành con cháu cho Áp-ra-ham được.⚓ ⁹Cái rìu đã đặt kề gốc cây; cây nào không sinh quả tốt thì sẽ bị đốn và ném vào lửa.”⚓ ¹⁰Dân chúng hỏi Giăng: “Vậy chúng tôi phải làm gì?” ¹¹Ông đáp: “Ai có hai áo hãy chia cho người không có; ai có thức ăn cũng nên làm như vậy.” ¹²Cũng có những người thu thuế đến để chịu báp-têm, hỏi rằng: “Thưa thầy, chúng tôi phải làm gì?”⚓ ¹³Ông bảo họ: “Đừng thu quá mức quy định.” ¹⁴Binh lính cũng hỏi: “Còn chúng tôi phải làm gì?” Ông trả lời: “Đừng hăm dọa hoặc vu khống ai để tống tiền, nhưng hãy bằng lòng về đồng lương của mình.” ¹⁵Tất cả dân chúng đang trông đợi và tự hỏi trong lòng: “Phải chăng Giăng là Đấng Christ?” ¹⁶Vì vậy, Giăng trả lời với mọi người: “Tôi làm báp-têm cho các người bằng nước; nhưng có một Đấng uy quyền hơn tôi sẽ đến, tôi không đáng mở quai dép cho Ngài. Ngài sẽ làm báp-têm cho các người bằng Đức Thánh Linh và lửa. ¹⁷Tay Ngài cầm nia để rê thật sạch sân lúa mình và thu lúa vào kho; nhưng rơm rạ thì đốt trong lửa chẳng hề tắt.” ¹⁸Giăng cũng dùng nhiều lời khuyên bảo khác mà rao giảng Tin Lành cho dân chúng. ¹⁹Nhưng khi Hê-rốt, vua chư hầu, bị Giăng quở trách về việc lấy Hê-rô-đia, vợ của em mình, và về tất cả các tội ác vua đã làm⚓ ²⁰thì vua lại phạm thêm một tội ác nữa, là bỏ tù Giăng.

Đức Chúa Jêsus chịu báp-têm

(Ma-thi-ơ 3:13-17; Mác 1:9-11)

²¹Khi tất cả dân chúng đều chịu báp-têm, Đức Chúa Jêsus cũng chịu báp-têm. Lúc Ngài đang cầu nguyện thì trời mở ra, ²²và Đức Thánh Linh ngự xuống trong hình thể giống như chim bồ câu đậu trên Ngài; lại có tiếng từ trời phán: “Con là Con yêu dấu của Ta, đẹp lòng Ta hoàn toàn!”⚓
