Jacob’s Return to Bethel

¹Then God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to ⚓Bethel and dwell there; and make an altar there to God, ⚓who appeared to you ⚓when you fled from the face of Esau your brother.”
²And Jacob said to his ⚓household and to all who were with him, “Put away ⚓the foreign gods that are among you, ⚓purify yourselves, and change your garments. ³Then let us arise and go up to Bethel; and I will make an altar there to God, ⚓who answered me in the day of my distress ⚓and has been with me in the way which I have gone.” ⁴So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods which were in their hands, and the ⚓earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under ⚓the terebinth tree which was by Shechem.
⁵And they journeyed, and ⚓the terror of God was upon the cities that were all around them, and they did not pursue the sons of Jacob. ⁶So Jacob came to ⚓Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him. ⁷And he ⚓built an altar there and called the place El Bethel, because ⚓there God appeared to him when he fled from the face of his brother.
⁸Now ⚓Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died, and she was buried below Bethel under the terebinth tree. So the name of it was called Allon Bachuth.
⁹Then ⚓God appeared to Jacob again, when he came from Padan Aram, and ⚓blessed him. ¹⁰And God said to him, “Your name is Jacob; ⚓your name shall not be called Jacob anymore, ⚓but Israel shall be your name.” So He called his name Israel. ¹¹Also God said to him: ⚓“I am God Almighty. ⚓Be fruitful and multiply; ⚓a nation and a company of nations shall proceed from you, and kings shall come from your body. ¹²The ⚓land which I gave Abraham and Isaac I give to you; and to your descendants after you I give this land.” ¹³Then God ⚓went up from him in the place where He talked with him. ¹⁴So Jacob ⚓set up a pillar in the place where He talked with him, a pillar of stone; and he poured a drink offering on it, and he poured oil on it. ¹⁵And Jacob called the name of the place where God spoke with him, ⚓Bethel.

Death of Rachel

¹⁶Then they journeyed from Bethel. And when there was but a little distance to go to Ephrath, Rachel labored in childbirth, and she had hard labor. ¹⁷Now it came to pass, when she was in hard labor, that the midwife said to her, “Do not fear; ⚓you will have this son also.” ¹⁸And so it was, as her soul was departing (for she died), that she called his name Ben-Oni; but his father called him Benjamin. ¹⁹So ⚓Rachel died and was buried on the way to ⚓Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem). ²⁰And Jacob set a pillar on her grave, which is the pillar of Rachel’s grave ⚓to this day.
²¹Then Israel journeyed and pitched his tent beyond ⚓the tower of Eder. ²²And it happened, when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and ⚓lay with Bilhah his father’s concubine; and Israel heard about it.

Jacob’s Twelve Sons

Now the sons of Jacob were twelve: ²³the sons of Leah were⚓Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn, and Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun; ²⁴the sons of Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin; ²⁵the sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s maidservant, were Dan and Naphtali; ²⁶and the sons of Zilpah, Leah’s maidservant, were Gad and Asher. These were the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Padan Aram.

Death of Isaac

²⁷Then Jacob came to his father Isaac at ⚓Mamre, or ⚓Kirjath Arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had dwelt. ²⁸Now the days of Isaac were one hundred and eighty years. ²⁹So Isaac breathed his last and died, and ⚓was gathered to his people, being old and full of days. And ⚓his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.

Gia-cốp ở Bê-tên

¹Thượng Đế bảo Gia-cốp, “Hãy đi đến Bê-tên⚓ và lập nghiệp ở đó. Hãy lập một bàn thờ cho Thượng Đế, Đấng đã hiện ra cùng con tại đó, khi con đang chạy trốn khỏi Ê-sau, anh con.”
²Vậy Gia-cốp bảo các gia nhân và những người đi theo mình rằng, “Hãy dẹp hết các thần lạ mà các con có, chuẩn bị mình cho thanh sạch, thay quần áo mới đi! ³Chúng ta sẽ rời nơi đây, dọn đến Bê-tên. Ta sẽ dựng một bàn thờ cho Thượng Đế tại đó, Đấng đã phù hộ ta trong cơn khốn khó. Ngài đã phù hộ ta mọi nơi ta đã đi.”
⁴Vậy họ giao cho Gia-cốp các tượng thần lạ họ có, các bông tai đang đeo, rồi ông chôn tất cả dưới gốc cây sồi⚓ gần thành Sê-chem.
⁵Gia-cốp và các con rời nơi đó. Thượng Đế khiến cho dân cư các thành gần đó hoảng sợ nên không ai dám đuổi theo họ. ⁶Gia-cốp cùng những người theo mình đi đến Lu-xơ, nay gọi là Bê-tên, trong xứ Ca-na-an. ⁷Gia-cốp dựng một bàn thờ và đặt tên là “Thượng Đế của Bê-tên,” theo tên Thượng Đế vì Thượng Đế đã hiện ra cùng ông khi ông đang chạy trốn khỏi anh mình.
⁸Đê-bô-ra, người vú em của Rê-be-ca qua đời và được chôn cất bên gốc cây sồi ở Bê-tên cho nên họ gọi chỗ đó là Cây Sồi Khóc Lóc.⚓

Tên mới của Gia-cốp

⁹Khi Gia-cốp từ miền tây bắc Mê-sô-bô-ta-mi trở về thì Thượng Đế lại hiện ra cùng ông và ban phước cho ông. ¹⁰Thượng Đế bảo ông, “Tên con hiện là Gia-cốp nhưng con sẽ không được gọi là Gia-cốp nữa. Tên mới của con sẽ là Ít-ra-en.” Nên Ngài gọi ông là Ít-ra-en.
¹¹Thượng Đế bảo ông, “Ta là Thượng Đế Toàn Năng. Hãy sinh thật đông con để trở thành một dân tộc. Con sẽ là tổ phụ của nhiều dân nhiều vua. ¹²Đất mà ta cho Áp-ra-ham và Y-sác ta cũng sẽ cho con và dòng dõi con.” ¹³Nói xong, Thượng Đế ngự lên khỏi nơi ấy. ¹⁴Gia-cốp dựng tảng đá nơi Thượng Đế nói chuyện với mình. Ông đổ của lễ uống và dầu ô liu trên đó để biệt riêng ra cho Ngài. ¹⁵Gia-cốp gọi chỗ ấy là Bê-tên.

Ra-chên qua đời khi sinh nở

¹⁶Gia-cốp và đoàn người cùng đi với ông rời Bê-tên. Trước khi họ đến Ếp-rát thì Ra-chên bắt đầu chuyển bụng nhưng sinh khó. ¹⁷Bà đỡ⚓ thấy vậy bảo, “Ra-chên ơi, đừng sợ. Chị đang sinh thêm một con trai nữa đó.”
¹⁸Ra-chên sinh ra một trai, nhưng rồi qua đời. Khi đang hấp hối nàng đặt tên cho đứa bé là Bê-nô-ni⚓, nhưng Gia-cốp đặt tên nó là Bên-gia-min⚓.
¹⁹Ra-chên được chôn cất trên con đường đi đến Ếp-rát, gọi là Bết-lê-hem, ²⁰Gia-cốp dựng một tảng đá làm bia để tưởng nhớ nàng. Tảng đá đó hiện vẫn còn. ²¹Rồi Ít-ra-en tiếp tục cuộc hành trình và đóng trại gần miền nam tháp Ê-đe⚓.
²²Trong khi Ít-ra-en ở đó thì Ru-bên đến ăn nằm với đứa nữ tì Bi-la, Ít-ra-en nghe biết chuyện ấy.

Gia đình của Ít-ra-en

Gia-cốp có mười hai con trai.
²³Sáu người con trai đầu do Lê-a sinh ra: Ru-bên, con trưởng nam, rồi đến Xi-mê-ôn, Lê-vi, Giu-đa, Y-xa-ca, và Xê-bu-lôn.
²⁴Ông có hai con trai do Ra-chên sinh ra: Giô-xép và Bên-gia-min.
²⁵Ông cũng có hai con do Bi-la, nữ tì của Ra-chên sinh ra: Đan và Nép-ta-li.
²⁶Ngoài ra ông cũng có hai con trai do Xinh-ba, nữ tì của Lê-a sinh ra: Gát và A-se.
Đó là tất cả những người con trai của Gia-cốp sinh ra ở miền Tây Bắc Mê-sô-bô-ta-mi.
²⁷Gia-cốp trở về cùng cha mình là Y-sác ở Mam-rê gần Hếp-rôn, nơi Áp-ra-ham và Y-sác sinh sống. ²⁸Y-sác hưởng thọ một trăm tám mươi tuổi. ²⁹Y-sác trút hơi thở cuối cùng và qua đời khi tuổi cao. Hai con trai Y-sác, Ê-sau và Gia-cốp chôn cất ông.
