Lỗi thứ nhứt của Sau-lơ: sự dâng của lễ thiêu

¹ Khi Sau-lơ lên ngôi vua, thì đã được bốn mươi tuổi. Người đã cai trị trên Y-sơ-ra-ên hai năm, ² bèn chọn ba ngàn người Y-sơ-ra-ên: hai ngàn người đặng ở cùng mình tại Mích-ma và trên núi Bê-tên, còn một ngàn người thì ở với Giô-na-than tại Ghi-bê-a trong xứ Bên-gia-min. Dân sự còn lại, người cho về, ai nấy vào trong trại mình.
³ Giô-na-than đánh đồn Phi-li-tin ở tại Ghê-ba. Dân Phi-li-tin hay điều đó; Sau-lơ hạ lịnh thổi kèn khắp xứ, mà rằng: Dân Hê-bơ-rơ khá nghe biết! ⁴ Vậy, cả Y-sơ-ra-ên đều hay rằng Sau-lơ đã đánh đồn Phi-li-tin và Y-sơ-ra-ên bị dân Phi-li-tin ghen ghét. Bấy giờ, dân sự bị nhóm hiệp lại bên Sau-lơ tại Ghinh-ganh.
⁵ Khi ấy, dân Phi-li-tin hiệp lại đặng đánh Y-sơ-ra-ên: Chúng có ba vạn cỗ xe, sáu ngàn lính kỵ, và quân lính đông như cát trên bờ biển. Vậy, chúng nó đi lên, đóng trại tại Mích-ma, về hướng đông của Bết-A-ven. ⁶ Dân Y-sơ-ra-ên thấy mình nguy cấp --- vì bị chúng theo riết gần, --- bèn trốn ẩn trong hang đá, trong bụi bờ, trong gành đá, trong đồn lũy, và trong hầm hố. ⁷ Mấy người Hê-bơ-rơ sang qua sông Giô-đanh, đến xứ Gát và Ga-la-át. Song Sau-lơ còn ở lại tại Ghinh-ganh và hết thảy dân sự đi theo người đều run sợ.
⁸ Sau-lơ đợi bảy ngày, là kỳ của Sa-mu-ên đã định; song vì Sa-mu-ên không đến Ghinh-ganh, dân sự bèn tan đi.⚓ ⁹ Bấy giờ, Sau-lơ nói: Hãy đem đến cho ta của lễ thiêu và của lễ thù ân; rồi người dâng của lễ thiêu. ¹⁰ Khi người dâng xong, kìa Sa-mu-ên bèn đến. Sau-lơ đi ra đón đặng chào người. ¹¹ Nhưng Sa-mu-ên hỏi: Ngươi đã làm chi? Sau-lơ đáp rằng: Khi tôi thấy dân sự tan đi, ông không đến theo ngày đã định, và dân Phi-li-tin đã hiệp lại tại Mích-ma, ¹² thì tôi nói rằng: Dân Phi-li-tin chắc sẽ hãm đánh tôi tại Ghinh-ganh, và tôi chưa cầu khẩn Đức Giê-hô-va. Vì vậy, tôi miễn cưỡng dâng của lễ thiêu. ¹³ Sa-mu-ên nói cùng Sau-lơ rằng: Ngươi thật có làm ngu dại, không vâng theo mạng lịnh của Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời ngươi đã truyền cho. Ví bằng có vâng theo, thì Đức Giê-hô-va ắt đã lập nước ngươi vững đời đời nơi Y-sơ-ra-ên; ¹⁴ nhưng bây giờ, nước ngươi sẽ không bền lâu. Đức Giê-hô-va đã chọn lấy cho mình một người theo lòng Ngài, đặt người ấy làm trưởng của dân sự Ngài, bởi vì ngươi không giữ theo mạng lịnh của Đức Giê-hô-va.⚓ ¹⁵ Đoạn, Sa-mu-ên đứng dậy, đi từ Ghinh-ganh đến Ghi-bê-a trong xứ Bên-gia-min, rồi Sau-lơ kiểm điểm dân ở cùng mình: Có ước chừng sáu trăm người.
¹⁶ Sau-lơ và Giô-na-than, con trai người, cùng quân lính đi theo, đều đóng tại Ghi-bê-a trong xứ Bên-gia-min, còn dân Phi-li-tin hạ trại tại Mích-ma. ¹⁷ Từ trong dinh Phi-li-tin có một toán quân cướp phá đi ra, chia làm ba đội: đội nầy theo con đường Óp-ra, đi về xứ Su-anh; ¹⁸ đội kia noi con đường Bết-hô-rôn; còn đội thứ ba theo con đường ranh nằm trên trũng Sê-bô-im, về hướng đồng vắng.
¹⁹ Vả, trong cả xứ Y-sơ-ra-ên không có thợ rèn, bởi vì dân Phi-li-tin đã nói rằng: Hãy cấm người Hê-bơ-rơ rèn gươm và giáo. ²⁰ Hết thảy Y-sơ-ra-ên ai nấy đều đi xuống nơi Phi-li-tin đặng mướn rèn lưỡi cày, cuốc, rìu, và lưỡi hái mình; ²¹ lại khi nào lưỡi cày, cuốc, chĩa ba, hay là rìu bị mẻ sứt, thì đi xuống đặng mài và sửa cái đót lại. ²² Nên trong ngày tranh chiến, chẳng có gươm cũng không có giáo nơi tay của cả dân sự đi theo Sau-lơ và Giô-na-than; chỉ có cho Sau-lơ và Giô-na-than, là con trai người, dùng mà thôi.

Saul’s Unlawful Sacrifice

¹Saul reigned one year; and when he had reigned two years over Israel, ²Saul chose for himself three thousand men of Israel. Two thousand were with Saul in ⚓Michmash and in the mountains of Bethel, and a thousand were with ⚓Jonathan in ⚓Gibeah of Benjamin. The rest of the people he sent away, every man to his tent.
³And Jonathan attacked ⚓the garrison of the Philistines that was in ⚓Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. Then Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, “Let the Hebrews hear!” ⁴Now all Israel heard it said that Saul had attacked a garrison of the Philistines, and that Israel had also become an abomination to the Philistines. And the people were called together to Saul at Gilgal.
⁵Then the Philistines gathered together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots and six thousand horsemen, and people ⚓as the sand which is on the seashore in multitude. And they came up and encamped in Michmash, to the east of ⚓Beth Aven. ⁶When the men of Israel saw that they were in danger (for the people were distressed), then the people ⚓hid in caves, in thickets, in rocks, in holes, and in pits. ⁷And some of the Hebrews crossed over the Jordan to the ⚓land of Gad and Gilead.
As for Saul, he was still in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling. ⁸⚓Then he waited seven days, according to the time set by Samuel. But Samuel did not come to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him. ⁹So Saul said, “Bring a burnt offering and peace offerings here to me.” And he offered the burnt offering. ¹⁰Now it happened, as soon as he had finished presenting the burnt offering, that Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might greet him.
¹¹And Samuel said, “What have you done?”
Saul said, “When I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that you did not come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered together at Michmash, ¹²then I said, ‘The Philistines will now come down on me at Gilgal, and I have not made supplication to the Lord.’ Therefore I felt compelled, and offered a burnt offering.”
¹³And Samuel said to Saul, ⚓“You have done foolishly. ⚓You have not kept the commandment of the Lord your God, which He commanded you. For now the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. ¹⁴⚓But now your kingdom shall not continue. ⚓The Lord has sought for Himself a man ⚓after His own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be commander over His people, because you have ⚓not kept what the Lord commanded you.”
¹⁵Then Samuel arose and went up from Gilgal to Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people present with him, ⚓about six hundred men.

No Weapons for the Army

¹⁶Saul, Jonathan his son, and the people present with them remained in Gibeah of Benjamin. But the Philistines encamped in Michmash. ¹⁷Then raiders came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies. One company turned onto the road to ⚓Ophrah, to the land of Shual, ¹⁸another company turned to the road to⚓Beth Horon, and another company turned to the road of the border that overlooks the Valley of ⚓Zeboim toward the wilderness.
¹⁹Now ⚓there was no blacksmith to be found throughout all the land of Israel, for the Philistines said, “Lest the Hebrews make swords or spears.” ²⁰But all the Israelites would go down to the Philistines to sharpen each man’s plowshare, his mattock, his ax, and his sickle; ²¹and the charge for a sharpening was a pim for the plowshares, the mattocks, the forks, and the axes, and to set the points of the goads. ²²So it came about, on the day of battle, that ⚓there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people who were with Saul and Jonathan. But they were found with Saul and Jonathan his son.
²³⚓And the garrison of the Philistines went out to the pass of Michmash.
