Hagar and Ishmael
1Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, ⚓had borne him no children. And she had ⚓an Egyptian maidservant whose name was ⚓Hagar.
2⚓So Sarai said to Abram, “See now, the Lord⚓has restrained me from bearing children. Please, ⚓go in to my maid; perhaps I shall obtain children by her.” And Abram ⚓heeded the voice of Sarai.
3Then Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar her maid, the Egyptian, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife, after Abram ⚓had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan.
4So he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress became ⚓despised in her eyes.
5Then Sarai said to Abram, “My wrong be upon you! I gave my maid into your embrace; and when she saw that she had conceived, I became despised in her eyes. ⚓The Lord judge between you and me.”
6⚓So Abram said to Sarai, “Indeed your maid is in your hand; do to her as you please.” And when Sarai dealt harshly with her, ⚓she fled from her presence.
7Now the ⚓Angel of the Lord found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, ⚓by the spring on the way to ⚓Shur.
8And He said, “Hagar, Sarai’s maid, where have you come from, and where are you going?”
She said, “I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarai.”
9The Angel of the Lord said to her, “Return to your mistress, and ⚓submit yourself under her hand.”
10Then the Angel of the Lord said to her, ⚓“I will multiply your descendants exceedingly, so that they shall not be counted for multitude.”
11And the Angel of the Lord said to her:
“Behold, you are with child,
⚓And you shall bear a son.
You shall call his name Ishmael,
Because the Lord has heard your affliction.
12⚓He shall be a wild man;
His hand shall be against every man,
And every man’s hand against him.
⚓And he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.”
13Then she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, You-Are-the-God-Who-Sees; for she said, “Have I also here seen Him ⚓who sees me?”
14Therefore the well was called ⚓Beer Lahai Roi; observe, it is⚓between Kadesh and Bered.
15So ⚓Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram named his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.
16Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.

Áp-ram nghe Sa-rai xúi bậy
1Sa-rai, vợ Áp-ram, vẫn chưa có con. Bà có nuôi một nữ tỳ Ai-cập tên là A-ga.
2Bà bảo chồng lấy cô nữ tỳ làm hầu: "Vì Chúa không cho tôi sinh sản, nên ông cứ ăn ở với nó, sau này con cái nó sẽ thuộc về tôi. Áp- ram bèn nghe theo lời vợ.
3Thế là sau mười năm kiều ngụ tại xứ Ca-na-an, Sa-rai đưa A- ga, người nữ tỳ Ai-cập, làm hầu cho Áp- ram.
4Áp-ram ăn ở với A-ga và nàng có thai. Biết mình đã có mang, A-ga kiêu căng và hỗn xược với bà chủ.
5Sa-rai tức bực trách cứ Áp-ram: "Lỗi này căn do là tại ông cả! Tôi cho ông tằng tịu với con nữ tỳ tôi.
Thế mà khi nó có thai, nó lại lên mặt coi tôi chẳng ra gì! Cầu Chúa phân xử giữa đôi ta!"
6Nhưng Áp-ram đáp: "Bà nuôi nữ tỳ thì bà có quyền trên nó, bà muốn làm gì thì làm!" Bị Sa-rai đối xử khắc nghiệt, A-ga bỏ nhà chủ trốn đi.
A-ga và Ích-ma-ên
7Thiên sứ của Chúa gặp A-ga bên dòng suối nước giữa sa mạc, trên đường đi Su-rơ, liền hỏi:
8“Này chị A-ga, nữ tỳ của Sa-rai, chị từ đâu đến đây và chị định đi đâu?“ Nàng đáp: "Tôi đi trốn bà chủ Sa-rai!"
9,10Thiên sứ bảo: "Chị hãy về nhà phục dịch chủ vì ta sẽ làm cho dòng dõi chị gia tăng đông đảo đến nỗi không ai đếm được.
11Chị đang có thai và sẽ sinh con trai, chị hãy đặt tên nó là Ích-ma-ên (có nghĩa là 'Chúa nghe') vì Chúa đã đoái thương cảnh khốn khổ của chị.
12Con trai chị sẽ là một chiến sĩ tung hoành như lừa rừng dọc ngang nào biết trên đầu có ai. Nó sẽ chiến đấu chống mọi người và ai cũng chống lại nó. Nhưng nó cũng sẽ ở gần bà con dòng họ."
13A-ga gọi Đấng phán dạy nàng là "Thượng Đế thấy rõ" vì nàng tự nhủ: "Tôi đã thấy Chúa là Đấng đoái xem tôi!"
14Nàng đặt tên suối nước là "Suối của Đấng Hằng sống đã đoái xem tôi." Dòng suối ấy chảy giữa Ca-đe và Bê-rết.
15,16Nàng sinh một con trai, Áp-ram đặt tên con là Ích-ma-ên. Năm ấy, Áp-ram đã được 86 tuổi.
