The Ammonites and Syrians Defeated

¹It⚓ happened after this that Nahash the king of the people of Ammon died, and his son reigned in his place. ²Then David said, “I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. And David’s servants came to Hanun in the land of the people of Ammon to comfort him.
³And the princes of the people of Ammon said to Hanun, “Do you think that David really honors your father because he has sent comforters to you? Did his servants not come to you to search and to overthrow and to spy out the land?”
⁴Therefore Hanun took David’s servants, shaved them, and cut off their garments in the middle, at their ⚓buttocks, and sent them away. ⁵Then some went and told David about the men; and he sent to meet them, because the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, “Wait at Jericho until your beards have grown, and then return.”
⁶When the people of Ammon saw that they had made themselves repulsive to David, Hanun and the people of Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire for themselves chariots and horsemen from Mesopotamia, from Syrian Maacah, ⚓and from Zobah. ⁷So they hired for themselves thirty-two thousand chariots, with the king of Maacah and his people, who came and encamped before Medeba. Also the people of Ammon gathered together from their cities, and came to battle.
⁸Now when David heard of it, he sent Joab and all the army of the mighty men. ⁹Then the people of Ammon came out and put themselves in battle array before the gate of the city, and the kings who had come were by themselves in the field.
¹⁰When Joab saw that the battle line was against him before and behind, he chose some of Israel’s best and put them in battle array against the Syrians. ¹¹And the rest of the people he put under the command of Abishai his brother, and they set themselves in battle array against the people of Ammon. ¹²Then he said, “If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you shall help me; but if the people of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will help you. ¹³Be of good courage, and let us be strong for our people and for the cities of our God. And may the Lord do what is good in His sight.”
¹⁴So Joab and the people who were with him drew near for the battle against the Syrians, and they fled before him. ¹⁵When the people of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fleeing, they also fled before Abishai his brother, and entered the city. So Joab went to Jerusalem.
¹⁶Now when the Syrians saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they sent messengers and brought the Syrians who were beyond the River, and Shophach the commander of Hadadezer’s army went before them. ¹⁷When it was told David, he gathered all Israel, crossed over the Jordan and came upon them, and set up in battle array against them. So when David had set up in battle array against the Syrians, they fought with him. ¹⁸Then the Syrians fled before Israel; and David killed seven thousand charioteers and forty thousand foot soldiers of the Syrians, and killed Shophach the commander of the army. ¹⁹And when the servants of Hadadezer saw that they were defeated by Israel, they made peace with David and became his servants. So the Syrians were not willing to help the people of Ammon anymore.

Vua Am-môn làm nhục các sứ thần Y-sơ-ra-ên

¹Sau đó, Na-hách, vua nước Am-môn, qua đời. Hoàng tử Ha-nun lên ngôi kế vị. ²Đa-vít nói: "Ta muốn đền ơn cho Na-hách bằng cách yểm trợ Ha-nun, con trai người." Đa-vít cử các sứ thần đến phân ưu với vua Ha-nun. Các sứ thần qua nước Am-môn, xin yết kiến Ha-nun để phân ưu. ³Nhưng các quan lớn trong triều đình Am-môn tỏ ý nghi ngờ thiện chí của Đa-vít: "Vua tưởng Đa-vít thật lòng tôn kính tiên đế nên sai sứ thần đến phân ưu sao? Thật ra nó sai sứ thần đi do thám để tiêu diệt đất nước ta!" ⁴Ha-nun ra lệnh bắt các sứ thần của Đa-vít, cạo râu, và cắt phân nửa áo của họ cho lòi bụng lòi lưng, rồi trục xuất. ⁵Được tin báo, Đa-vít cho người đi đón các sứ thần đang bị tủi nhục và bảo họ tạm trú tại Giê-ri-cô cho đến ngày râu mọc lại, sẽ trở về.

Chiến tranh Am-môn

⁶Dân Am-môn ý thức rằng Đa-vít khinh tởm họ, nên đem 1.000 ta lâng⚓ bạc qua xứ Lưỡng Hà, đến tận A-ram Ma-a-ca và Xô-ba, để thuê chiến xa và kỵ binh. ⁷Họ thuê được 32.000 chiến xa do dân Ma-a-ca điều khiển, đặt dưới quyền chỉ huy của vua nước Ma-a-ca. Đoàn chiến xa kéo qua đóng tại trước Mê-đê-ba. Đồng thời, quân đội Am-môn từ tất cả các thành phố đều tập họp, sẵn sàng tác chiến. ⁸Được tin tình báo, vua Đa-vít ra lệnh cho tướng Giô-áp đem toàn lực quân đội gồm các chiến sĩ can đảm ra, chống đánh quân thù. ⁹Bộ đội Am-môn xuất quân, bố trí trước cổng thành, còn quân đồng minh bố trí giữa cánh đồng.
¹⁰Tướng Giô-áp nhận thấy địch định bao vây quân Y-sơ-ra-ên, liền chia quân làm hai, đem các đội chủ lực chống đánh quân Sy-ri, ¹¹còn lực lượng kia đặt dưới quyền chỉ huy của tướng A-bi-sai, em mình, để đối phó với quân Am-môn. ¹²Giô-áp bảo A-bi-sai: "Nếu quân Sy-ri mạnh hơn anh, em sẽ chia quân yểm trợ anh. Nếu quân Am-môn áp đảo em, anh sẽ chia quân yểm trợ em. ¹³Hãy vững chí kiên tâm như đại trượng phu chiến đấu vì dân vì nước để bảo vệ các thành của Thượng Đế ta. Cầu Chúa thực hiện ý định của Ngài." ¹⁴Giô-áp đem quân xung phong vào mặt trận Sy-ri; địch bỏ chạy tán loạn. ¹⁵Nhận thấy quân Sy-ri đã trốn thoát, quân Am-môn cũng khiếp đảm tháo lui trước khí thế quân sĩ A-bi-sai và rút về thành phố họ. Tướng Giô-áp bèn kéo quân về thủ đô.
¹⁶Sau cuộc thất trận ấy, quân đội Sy-ri sai người đi cầu viện các lực lượng Sy-ri đóng ở tả ngạn Phát-giang, đặt dưới quyền chỉ huy của tướng Sô-phác, thuộc quân đội của Ha-đa-rê-xe. ¹⁷Được tin tình báo, vua Đa-vít liền động viên toàn quốc, đem quân vượt qua sông Giô-đan để chống đánh quân Sy-ri. Bị quân đội của Đa-vít chận đánh, quân Sy-ri xung phong tiến công, ¹⁸nhưng bị đánh tan, mỗi đơn vị chạy trốn một ngã. 7.000 lính cưỡi chiến xa cùng 40.000 bộ binh tử trận. Tướng Sô-phác, tổng tư lệnh quân đội Sy-ri cũng bỏ mạng tại chiến trường. ¹⁹Sau cuộc đại bại, triều đình của vua Ha-đa-rê-xe xin lập hòa ước với Đa-vít và phục dịch vua. Từ đó, dân tộc Sy-ri không còn muốn xuất quân cứu viện dân Am-môn nữa.
