The Ammonites and Syrians Defeated

¹It⚓ happened after this that Nahash the king of the people of Ammon died, and his son reigned in his place. ²Then David said, “I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. And David’s servants came to Hanun in the land of the people of Ammon to comfort him.
³And the princes of the people of Ammon said to Hanun, “Do you think that David really honors your father because he has sent comforters to you? Did his servants not come to you to search and to overthrow and to spy out the land?”
⁴Therefore Hanun took David’s servants, shaved them, and cut off their garments in the middle, at their ⚓buttocks, and sent them away. ⁵Then some went and told David about the men; and he sent to meet them, because the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, “Wait at Jericho until your beards have grown, and then return.”
⁶When the people of Ammon saw that they had made themselves repulsive to David, Hanun and the people of Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire for themselves chariots and horsemen from Mesopotamia, from Syrian Maacah, ⚓and from Zobah. ⁷So they hired for themselves thirty-two thousand chariots, with the king of Maacah and his people, who came and encamped before Medeba. Also the people of Ammon gathered together from their cities, and came to battle.
⁸Now when David heard of it, he sent Joab and all the army of the mighty men. ⁹Then the people of Ammon came out and put themselves in battle array before the gate of the city, and the kings who had come were by themselves in the field.
¹⁰When Joab saw that the battle line was against him before and behind, he chose some of Israel’s best and put them in battle array against the Syrians. ¹¹And the rest of the people he put under the command of Abishai his brother, and they set themselves in battle array against the people of Ammon. ¹²Then he said, “If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you shall help me; but if the people of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will help you. ¹³Be of good courage, and let us be strong for our people and for the cities of our God. And may the Lord do what is good in His sight.”
¹⁴So Joab and the people who were with him drew near for the battle against the Syrians, and they fled before him. ¹⁵When the people of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fleeing, they also fled before Abishai his brother, and entered the city. So Joab went to Jerusalem.
¹⁶Now when the Syrians saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they sent messengers and brought the Syrians who were beyond the River, and Shophach the commander of Hadadezer’s army went before them. ¹⁷When it was told David, he gathered all Israel, crossed over the Jordan and came upon them, and set up in battle array against them. So when David had set up in battle array against the Syrians, they fought with him. ¹⁸Then the Syrians fled before Israel; and David killed seven thousand charioteers and forty thousand foot soldiers of the Syrians, and killed Shophach the commander of the army. ¹⁹And when the servants of Hadadezer saw that they were defeated by Israel, they made peace with David and became his servants. So the Syrians were not willing to help the people of Ammon anymore.

Chiến Thắng Dân Am-môn

¹Sau một thời gian, Na-hách, vua dân Am-môn qua đời, con trai người lên kế vị. ²Vua Đa-vít nói: “Ta sẽ lấy tình thương mà đối xử với Ha-nun, con trai của Na-hách, vì cha người đã lấy tình thương đối xử với ta.” Vua Đa-vít gởi sứ giả đến chia buồn với Ha-nun về vua cha. Vậy, các bề tôi của vua Đa-vít đến cùng Ha-nun trong đất Am-môn để chia buồn cùng vua. ³Nhưng các tướng lãnh Am-môn nói với vua rằng: “Ngài tưởng Đa-vít sai người đến chia buồn với ngài là vì tôn kính vua cha sao? Không phải các bề tôi của hắn đến với ngài để quan sát, do thám và lật đổ đất nước này sao?” ⁴Như thế Ha-nun bắt các bề tôi của Đa-vít, cạo râu, cắt vạt áo đến lưng rồi đuổi về.
⁵Người ta báo cho vua Đa-vít tình cảnh của những người này; vua sai người đi đón các sứ giả và bảo họ ở tại thành Giê-ri-cô cho đến khi râu mọc lại rồi hãy trở về vì họ rất hổ thẹn. ⁶Khi dân Am-môn thấy mình trở nên như mùi hôi tanh đối với Đa-vít, vua Ha-nun và dân Am-môn sai người đem ba mươi bốn tấn bạc đi mướn xe chiến mã và kỵ binh của A-ram Na-ha-ra, A-ram Ma-a-ca và Xô-ba. ⁷Họ mướn ba mươi hai ngàn xe chiến mã cùng vua Ma-a-ca và quân đội người; chúng đến và đóng quân phía trước Mê-đê-ba. Còn dân Am-môn từ các thành của họ tụ họp lại và tiến ra chiến trận.
⁸Nghe như thế, vua Đa-vít cử Giô-áp đem cả đạo quân ra, toàn là dũng sĩ. ⁹Người Am-môn tiến ra, dàn trận tại cổng thành; còn các vua đã đến thì đóng nơi đồng trống.
¹⁰Khi thấy quân địch dàn trận phía trước lẫn phía sau mình, Giô-áp chọn những binh sĩ tinh nhuệ nhất của Y-sơ-ra-ên và đặt họ đối diện với quân Sy-ri. ¹¹Quân còn lại ông trao cho A-bi-sai, em mình chỉ huy, và đặt họ đối diện với quân Am-môn. ¹²Giô-áp bảo: “Nếu quân Sy-ri mạnh hơn anh, em sẽ tiếp cứu anh; nếu quân Am-môn mạnh hơn em, anh sẽ tiếp cứu em. ¹³Hãy mạnh mẽ và can đảm chiến đấu cho dân tộc chúng ta, cho các thành của Đức Chúa Trời chúng ta. CHÚA sẽ làm điều tốt đẹp theo mắt Ngài.” ¹⁴Bấy giờ Giô-áp tiến quân tấn công quân Sy-ri và chúng bỏ chạy trước mặt người. ¹⁵Quân Am-môn thấy quân Sy-ri bỏ chạy cũng chạy trốn trước mặt A-bi-sai, em Giô-áp; chúng chạy vào thành mình. Như vậy Giô-áp trở về Giê-ru-sa-lem.
¹⁶Khi người Sy-ri thấy mình bị thua quân Y-sơ-ra-ên; họ gởi sứ giả cầu viện quân Sy-ri từ bên kia sông Ơ-phơ-rát đến; có tướng Sô-phác của đạo quân Ha-đa-rê-xe thống lĩnh. ¹⁷Khi hay tin, Đa-vít tập họp toàn quân Y-sơ-ra-ên, vượt sông Giô-đanh, tiến ra trận; người dàn quân đối diện quân địch. Đa-vít dàn quân giao chiến và quân Sy-ri chiến đấu chống lại người. ¹⁸Quân Sy-ri thua chạy trước quân Y-sơ-ra-ên. Đa-vít tiêu diệt bảy ngàn kỵ binh và bốn chục ngàn bộ binh Sy-ri; người cũng giết Sô-phác, tướng thống lĩnh đạo binh của chúng. ¹⁹Khi các vua chư hầu của Ha-đa-rê-xe thấy họ bị Y-sơ-ra-ên đánh bại thì cầu hòa với vua Đa-vít và thần phục người; còn người Sy-ri thì không muốn tiếp cứu người Am-môn nữa.
