The Ammonites and Syrians Defeated

¹It⚓ happened after this that Nahash the king of the people of Ammon died, and his son reigned in his place. ²Then David said, “I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. And David’s servants came to Hanun in the land of the people of Ammon to comfort him.
³And the princes of the people of Ammon said to Hanun, “Do you think that David really honors your father because he has sent comforters to you? Did his servants not come to you to search and to overthrow and to spy out the land?”
⁴Therefore Hanun took David’s servants, shaved them, and cut off their garments in the middle, at their ⚓buttocks, and sent them away. ⁵Then some went and told David about the men; and he sent to meet them, because the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, “Wait at Jericho until your beards have grown, and then return.”
⁶When the people of Ammon saw that they had made themselves repulsive to David, Hanun and the people of Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire for themselves chariots and horsemen from Mesopotamia, from Syrian Maacah, ⚓and from Zobah. ⁷So they hired for themselves thirty-two thousand chariots, with the king of Maacah and his people, who came and encamped before Medeba. Also the people of Ammon gathered together from their cities, and came to battle.
⁸Now when David heard of it, he sent Joab and all the army of the mighty men. ⁹Then the people of Ammon came out and put themselves in battle array before the gate of the city, and the kings who had come were by themselves in the field.
¹⁰When Joab saw that the battle line was against him before and behind, he chose some of Israel’s best and put them in battle array against the Syrians. ¹¹And the rest of the people he put under the command of Abishai his brother, and they set themselves in battle array against the people of Ammon. ¹²Then he said, “If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you shall help me; but if the people of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will help you. ¹³Be of good courage, and let us be strong for our people and for the cities of our God. And may the Lord do what is good in His sight.”
¹⁴So Joab and the people who were with him drew near for the battle against the Syrians, and they fled before him. ¹⁵When the people of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fleeing, they also fled before Abishai his brother, and entered the city. So Joab went to Jerusalem.
¹⁶Now when the Syrians saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they sent messengers and brought the Syrians who were beyond the River, and Shophach the commander of Hadadezer’s army went before them. ¹⁷When it was told David, he gathered all Israel, crossed over the Jordan and came upon them, and set up in battle array against them. So when David had set up in battle array against the Syrians, they fought with him. ¹⁸Then the Syrians fled before Israel; and David killed seven thousand charioteers and forty thousand foot soldiers of the Syrians, and killed Shophach the commander of the army. ¹⁹And when the servants of Hadadezer saw that they were defeated by Israel, they made peace with David and became his servants. So the Syrians were not willing to help the people of Ammon anymore.

Vua dân Am-môn sỉ nhục các sứ giả của Đa-vít

(II Sa 10:1-5)

¹Sau các việc đó, vua dân Am-môn là Na-hách băng hà, và con trai vua lên kế vị. ²Đa-vít nói: “Ta muốn bày tỏ tình thân thiện với Ha-nun, con của Na-hách, như cha vua ấy đã đối xử với ta.” Đa-vít sai sứ giả đến an ủi Ha-nun về việc thân phụ vua ấy băng hà. Vậy, các đầy tớ của Đa-vít đến gặp Ha-nun trong xứ dân Am-môn để phân ưu. ³Nhưng các quan trưởng dân Am-môn tâu với Ha-nun: “Vua tưởng rằng Đa-vít sai sứ giả đến an ủi vua là vì tôn kính thân phụ vua sao? Các đầy tớ hắn đến với vua chẳng phải là để xem xét và do thám xứ để hủy diệt đó sao?” ⁴Ha-nun bắt các sứ giả của Đa-vít cạo râu và cắt một nửa áo của họ cho đến mông, rồi đuổi về. ⁵Vậy họ ra đi. Có người đến trình cho Đa-vít biết mọi việc. Vua sai người đi đón họ, vì họ rất xấu hổ. Vua bảo: “Hãy ở tại Giê-ri-cô cho đến khi râu các ngươi mọc lại rồi hãy trở về.”

Dân Am-môn, A-ram và đồng minh bị bại trận

⁶Khi dân Am-môn thấy Đa-vít ghê tởm chúng thì Ha-nun và dân Am-môn sai người đem ba mươi tấn⚓ bạc đi đến Mê-sô-pô-ta-mi, A-ram Ma-a-ca, và Xô-ba, để thuê chiến xa và kỵ binh. ⁷Chúng thuê ba mươi hai nghìn cỗ xe và thuê cả vua xứ Ma-a-ca cùng với quân lính của vua nữa. Chúng kéo đến đóng tại trước Mê-đê-ba. Dân Am-môn từ các thành của chúng tập hợp lại để ra trận. ⁸Hay tin đó, Đa-vít sai Giô-áp ra trận cùng với một đạo quân toàn là những dũng sĩ. ⁹Dân Am-môn kéo ra, dàn trận nơi cổng thành; còn các vua đồng minh thì đóng ở ngoài cánh đồng.
¹⁰Khi Giô-áp thấy quân thù đã dàn trận phía trước và phía sau mình, ông chọn một số dũng sĩ trong đạo quân Y-sơ-ra-ên và dàn trận đối diện quân A-ram. ¹¹Số quân còn lại, ông giao cho em của ông là A-bi-sai; họ dàn trận đối diện với dân Am-môn. ¹²Ông nói: “Nếu quân A-ram mạnh hơn anh, em sẽ tiếp viện anh; còn nếu quân Am-môn mạnh hơn em, anh sẽ tiếp viện em. ¹³Hãy mạnh dạn, can đảm lên! Hãy vì dân tộc chúng ta, vì các thành của Đức Chúa Trời chúng ta mà chiến đấu. Nguyện Đức Giê-hô-va làm theo ý Ngài lấy làm tốt.” ¹⁴Vậy, Giô-áp và quân lính theo ông đều đến gần đối đầu với quân A-ram để giao chiến; quân A-ram chạy trốn khỏi ông. ¹⁵Khi quân Am-môn thấy quân A-ram đã chạy trốn thì cũng chạy trốn khỏi A-bi-sai, em Giô-áp, mà trở vào thành. Sau đó, Giô-áp trở về Giê-ru-sa-lem.
¹⁶Khi quân A-ram thấy mình bị quân Y-sơ-ra-ên đánh bại thì sai sứ giả đến cầu viện với quân Sy-ri ở bên kia Sông⚓ do Sô-phác, quan tướng của đạo binh Ha-đa-rê-xe, chỉ huy. ¹⁷Đa-vít hay tin đó, liền tập hợp toàn quân Y-sơ-ra-ên vượt sông Giô-đanh, đến dàn trận và đánh quân A-ram. Khi Đa-vít đã dàn trận đối diện quân A-ram thì chúng giao chiến với vua. ¹⁸Quân A-ram chạy trốn trước mặt Y-sơ-ra-ên. Đa-vít giết bảy nghìn kỵ binh, bốn mươi nghìn bộ binh của quân A-ram, và cũng giết Sô-phác, tướng chỉ huy quân đội. ¹⁹Khi các đầy tớ của Ha-đa-rê-xe thấy chúng bị quân Y-sơ-ra-ên đánh bại thì cầu hòa với Đa-vít và phục dịch vua. Về sau, dân A-ram không còn muốn tiếp viện dân Am-môn nữa.
