1When King Hezekiah heard this, he tore his clothes and put on sackcloth and went into the temple of the Lord. 2He sent Eliakim the palace administrator, Shebna the secretary, and the leading priests, all wearing sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz. 3They told him, “This is what Hezekiah says: This day is a day of distress and rebuke and disgrace, as when children come to the moment of birth and there is no strength to deliver them. 4It may be that the Lord your God will hear the words of the field commander, whom his master, the king of Assyria, has sent to ridicule the living God, and that he will rebuke him for the words the Lord your God has heard. Therefore pray for the remnant that still survives.” 5When King Hezekiah’s officials came to Isaiah, 6Isaiah said to them, “Tell your master, ‘This is what the Lord says: Do not be afraid of what you have heard—those words with which the underlings of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me. 7Listen! When he hears a certain report, I will make him want to return to his own country, and there I will have him cut down with the sword.’ ” 8When the field commander heard that the king of Assyria had left Lachish, he withdrew and found the king fighting against Libnah. 9Now Sennacherib received a report that Tirhakah, the king of Cush,⚓ was marching out to fight against him. When he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah with this word: 10“Say to Hezekiah king of Judah: Do not let the god you depend on deceive you when he says, ‘Jerusalem will not be given into the hands of the king of Assyria.’ 11Surely you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the countries, destroying them completely. And will you be delivered? 12Did the gods of the nations that were destroyed by my predecessors deliver them—the gods of Gozan, Harran, Rezeph and the people of Eden who were in Tel Assar? 13Where is the king of Hamath or the king of Arpad? Where are the kings of Lair, Sepharvaim, Hena and Ivvah?”
Hezekiah’s Prayer
14Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers and read it. Then he went up to the temple of the Lord and spread it out before the Lord. 15And Hezekiah prayed to the Lord: 16“Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim, you alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth. 17Give ear, Lord, and hear; open your eyes, Lord, and see; listen to all the words Sennacherib has sent to ridicule the living God. 18“It is true, Lord, that the Assyrian kings have laid waste all these peoples and their lands. 19They have thrown their gods into the fire and destroyed them, for they were not gods but only wood and stone, fashioned by human hands. 20Now, Lord our God, deliver us from his hand, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you, Lord, are the only God.⚓ ”
Sennacherib’s Fall
21Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah: “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Because you have prayed to me concerning Sennacherib king of Assyria, 22this is the word the Lord has spoken against him: “Virgin Daughter Zion despises and mocks you. Daughter Jerusalem tosses her head as you flee. 23Who is it you have ridiculed and blasphemed? Against whom have you raised your voice and lifted your eyes in pride? Against the Holy One of Israel! 24By your messengers you have ridiculed the Lord. And you have said, ‘With my many chariots I have ascended the heights of the mountains, the utmost heights of Lebanon. I have cut down its tallest cedars, the choicest of its junipers. I have reached its remotest heights, the finest of its forests. 25I have dug wells in foreign lands⚓ and drunk the water there. With the soles of my feet I have dried up all the streams of Egypt.’
26“Have you not heard? Long ago I ordained it. In days of old I planned it; now I have brought it to pass, that you have turned fortified cities into piles of stone. 27Their people, drained of power, are dismayed and put to shame. They are like plants in the field, like tender green shoots, like grass sprouting on the roof, scorched⚓ before it grows up.
28“But I know where you are and when you come and go and how you rage against me. 29Because you rage against me and because your insolence has reached my ears, I will put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth, and I will make you return by the way you came. 30“This will be the sign for you, Hezekiah: “This year you will eat what grows by itself, and the second year what springs from that. But in the third year sow and reap, plant vineyards and eat their fruit. 31Once more a remnant of the kingdom of Judah will take root below and bear fruit above. 32For out of Jerusalem will come a remnant, and out of Mount Zion a band of survivors. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this. 33“Therefore this is what the Lord says concerning the king of Assyria: “He will not enter this city or shoot an arrow here. He will not come before it with shield or build a siege ramp against it. 34By the way that he came he will return; he will not enter this city,”
35“I will defend this city and save it, for my sake and for the sake of David my servant!” 36Then the angel of the Lord went out and put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand in the Assyrian camp. When the people got up the next morning—there were all the dead bodies! 37So Sennacherib king of Assyria broke camp and withdrew. He returned to Nineveh and stayed there. 38One day, while he was worshiping in the temple of his god Nisrok, his sons Adrammelek and Sharezer killed him with the sword, and they escaped to the land of Ararat. And Esarhaddon his son succeeded him as king.

1Vua Ê-xê-chia vừa nghe xong báo cáo, liền xé tan áo xống đang mặc. Vua mặc áo tang⚓ đi vào Đền thờ của Chúa. 2Vua cũng sai thủ tướng Ê-li-a-kim, bộ trưởng ngoại giao Sép-na, và các thầy tế lễ cao tuổi đến thăm tiên tri Ê-sa, con A-mốt. Mỗi người trong phái đoàn đều mặc áo tang.⚓3Phái đoàn thuật cho Ê-sa nghe lời tuyên bố của vua Ê-xê-chia: "Đây là ngày rối loạn, báng bổ và khẩn trương.⚓ 6 Tình hình vô cùng nghiêm trọng như khi bà mẹ đến giờ quặn thắt kinh hoàng mà không sinh được đứa con. 4Nhưng có lẽ Chúa⚓ sẽ nghe lời báng bổ phạm thượng của Ráp-sa-kê, sứ thần của vua A-sy-ri nên Ngài sẽ quở phạt quân thù. Vậy xin ông hãy cầu nguyện cho nhân dân còn sống sót!" 5,6Nghe thế, Ê-sa liền đáp: "Xin các ông thuật cho vua nghe lời của Chúa Hằng Hữu: Đừng sợ lời đe dọa báng bổ của bầy tôi vua A-sy-ri. 7Này, Ta sẽ sai một thần linh nhập vào nó; nó sẽ nghe một tin đồn và tức tốc quay về A-sy-ri. Ta sẽ làm cho nó bị gươm đâm chết tại quê hương nó." 8Được tin vua A-sy-ri đã dời tổng hành dinh từ La-ki qua gần thành Líp-na để chỉ huy cuộc tiến công vào thành phố này, tướng Ráp-sa-kê liền đến chầu vua. 9Vua San-chê-ríp được tin tình báo cho hay Tiệt-ha-ca, vua Ê-thi-ô-bi đã phát động chiến dịch đánh A-sy-ri, liền cử phái đoàn đem công hàm đến giao cho Ê-xê-chia 10và đe dọa: "Dù vua tin tưởng nhưng đừng để Thượng Đế lừa gạt vua rằng: 'Giê-ru-sa-lem sẽ thoát khỏi tay đại đế A-sy-ri.' 11Này, vua đã nghe tin tức chiến sự và những chiến thắng vĩ đại của các đại đế A-sy-ri trong tất cả các quốc gia: quân đội vô địch của A-sy-ri đã đánh tan và tiêu diệt các nước, không lẽ một mình vua thoát khỏi? 12Những thần của các dân tộc có cứu nổi các quốc gia mà các tiên đế ta đã tiêu diệt không? Gô-san, Cha-ran, Rê-sép và Tê-la-sa của người E-đen bây giờ ở đâu? 13Vua Ha-mát, vua Ạc-bác, vua của Sê-phạt-va-im, Hê-na và Y-va bây giờ ở đâu?" 14Vua Ê-xê-chia nhận bức công hàm từ tay các sứ thần. Vua đọc kỹ rồi lập tức lên Đền thờ của Chúa, trải bức công hàm trước mặt Ngài 15và khẩn thiết cầu nguyện: 16“Ôi, thưa Chúa Hằng Hữu Toàn năng và Thượng Đế của Y-sơ-ra-ên đang ngự giữa các thiên sứ, là Đấng Chân Thần. Chỉ một mình Chúa tể trị tất cả các quốc gia trên thế giới. Chúa đã sáng tạo vũ trụ. 17Xin Chúa hãy đoái nghe! Thưa Chúa Hằng Hữu, xin lắng tai! Xin Chúa hãy mở mắt xem và nghe những lời San-chê-ríp báng bổ Chúa Hằng sống. 18Thưa Chúa, các vua A-sy-ri thật đã tiêu diệt các nước các xứ 19và quăng các thần họ vào lò lửa vì đó chỉ là những thần giả tạo, do tay người tạc tượng bằng gỗ, bằng đá nên mới bị cháy tiêu. 20Nhưng thưa Chúa Hằng Hữu, Chân Thần của chúng con, xin giải cứu chúng con khỏi tay vua A-sy-ri ngõ hầu tất cả các nước trên thế giới nhìn biết chỉ một mình Chúa là Chân Thần." 21,22Ê-sa, con trai A-mốt, sai người đến thưa với vua Ê-xê-chia: "Chúa Hằng Hữu là Thượng Đế của Y-sơ-ra-ên phán: Đáp lời con cầu xin với Ta về San-chê-ríp, vua A-sy-ri, Ta, Chúa Hằng hữu quả quyết: Các trinh nữ ở Si-ôn chê cười ngươi; các con gái thủ đô lắc đầu chế nhạo ngươi. 23Ngươi báng bổ xúc phạm ai? Ngươi to tiếng và ngước mắt nhìn ai? Ngươi dám chống nghịch Đấng Thánh của Y-sơ-ra-ên! 24Ngươi đã chế nhạo Chúa Tể của vũ trụ, rằng: "Nhờ vô số chiến xa, ta tiến lên các đỉnh núi cao và chiếm đóng sườn núi Li¬-ban. Ta sẽ đốn các cây hương bách cao vút và các cây tùng chọn lọc. Ta sẽ lên đến tột đỉnh và vào khu rừng đẹp nhất. 25Ta đã đào giếng và uống nước. Lòng bàn chân ta đã làm khô cạn hết sông ngòi Ai-cập. 26Từ xa ngươi không nghe điều ấy sao? Ta đã hoạch định những việc ấy từ xưa, và nay đem ra thực hiện. Ngươi gây ra bao nhiêu cuộc tang thương: thành quách lâu đài kiên cố biến thành đống đổ nát điêu tàn. 27Bao nhiêu dân tộc phải bó tay chịu trận và cúi mặt thẹn thuồng, như cỏ xanh đồng nội cúi rạp trước trận bão, như rêu vừa mọc trên mái nhà đã bị gió thổi tốc đi. 28Nhưng Ta biết rõ ngươi, nhất cử nhất động Ta đều theo dõi, cả đến những khi ngươi nổi giận nghịch cùng ta. 29Những cơn cuồng loạn ấy, những lời tự đề cao của ngươi đã thấu tai Ta, nên Ta lấy lưỡi câu móc mũi ngươi, đặt khớp vào môi ngươi để kéo ngươi trở về quê hương. 30Đây là điềm báo hiệu cho Ê-xê-chia biết rõ Ta sẽ trừng phạt A-sy-ri: năm nay, nhân dân sẽ ăn ngũ cốc họ đã gieo trồng; sang năm sẽ ăn ngũ cốc tự nhiên mọc lên; đến năm thứ ba sẽ gieo và gặt, trồng vườn nho và ăn trái. 31Nhân dân Do-thái còn sống sót sẽ như rể ăn sâu vào lòng đất và sinh hoa quả dồi dào. 32Vì từ Giê-ru-sa-lem sẽ có số dân sống sót tràn ra và định cư khắp đất nước. Nhiệt tâm của Chúa sẽ làm động cơ thúc đẩy chương trình này thực hiện." 33Về vua A-sy-ri, Chúa quả quyết: "Quân đội A-sy-ri sẽ không vào được thủ đô Giê-ru-sa-lem, không pháo kích vào thành phố, không dương oai diệu võ, cũng không xây công sự để đánh phá các tường thành. 34Vua A-sy-ri sẽ trở về nước, theo đúng con đường nó đã ra đi và sẽ không bao giờ chiếm được Giê-ru-sa-lem. 35Vì danh Ta, Ta sẽ bảo vệ và giải cứu thành này để kỷ niệm đầy tớ Ta là Đa-vít." 36Ngay đêm ấy, thiên sứ của Chúa đến các đồn trại A-sy-ri giết chết 185.000 quân sĩ. Sáng hôm sau, người ta dậy sớm thấy xác chết của quân A-sy-ri nằm la liệt khắp nơi. 37San-chê-ríp, vua A-sy-ri bỏ chạy về nước, rồi ở lì tại Ni-ni-ve. 38Một hôm khi San-chê-ríp đang quỳ lạy trong đền thờ Hít-róc, thần của mình, thì bị hai con trai đâm chết. Hai đứa con bất hiếu, tên A-tra-mê-léc và Sa-rết-se, liền trốn qua xứ Ác-mê-ni. Ê-sạt-ha-đôn lên kế vị cha mình.
