1 Trong lúc E-xơ-ra cầu nguyện như vậy, vừa khóc vừa xưng tội và sấp mình xuống trước đền của Đức Chúa Trời, thì có một đám dân Y-sơ-ra-ên, người nam và nữ rất đông, nhóm hiệp xung quanh người; chúng cũng khóc nức nở. 2 Sê-ca-nia, con trai Giê-hi-ên, cháu của Ê-lam bèn nói cùng E-xơ-ra rằng: Chúng ta phạm tội với Đức Chúa Trời chúng ta mà cưới những người nữ ngoại thuộc các dân tộc của xứ; nhưng dầu đã làm vậy, hãy còn sự hi vọng cho Y-sơ-ra-ên. 3 Vậy bây giờ, ta hãy lập ước với Đức Chúa Trời chúng ta, đuổi hết thảy những người nữ kia và các con cái của họ đã sanh ra, y như lời chỉ giáo của chúa tôi và của các người có lòng kính sợ điều răn của Đức Chúa Trời chúng ta; khá làm điều ấy theo luật pháp. 4 Ông hãy đứng dậy, vì việc này can hệ đến ông, và chúng tôi sẽ giúp đỡ; khá can đảm mà làm. 5 E-xơ-ra bèn đứng dậy, khiến những thầy tế lễ cả, người Lê-vi, và cả Y-sơ-ra-ên thề rằng mình sẽ làm theo lời ấy. Chúng liền thề. 6 Khi E-xơ-ra đã chỗi dậy khỏi trước đền Đức Chúa Trời, bèn đi vào phòng của Giô-ha-nan, con trai Ê-li-a-síp; người vào đó không ăn bánh và cũng không uống nước, bởi người lấy làm buồn thảm vì cớ tội lỗi của dân đã bị bắt làm phu tù được trở về. 7 Người ta bèn rao truyền khắp xứ Giu-đa và Giê-ru-sa-lem, biểu các dân đã bị bắt làm phu tù được trở về phải nhóm hiệp tại Giê-ru-sa-lem. 8 Trong ba ngày, ai không vâng theo lịnh của các quan trưởng và trưởng lão mà đến, thì các tài sản người ấy sẽ bị tịch phong, và chính người bị truất ra khỏi hội chúng của dân đã bị bắt làm phu tù được trở về. 9 Trong ba ngày, các người của Giu-đa và Bên-gia-min đều nhóm lại tại Giê-ru-sa-lem, nhằm ngày hai mươi tháng chín; cả dân sự đều ngồi tại phố ở đằng trước đền của Đức Chúa Trời, rúng sợ về việc ấy và về cơn mưa lớn. 10 Đoạn, E-xơ-ra, thầy tế lễ, đứng dậy, và nói rằng: Các ngươi đã phạm tội, cưới vợ ngoại bang, và thêm nhiều lên tội lỗi của Y-sơ-ra-ên. 11 Nhưng bây giờ, khá xưng tội lỗi mình cho Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời của tổ phụ các ngươi, và làm điều đẹp ý Ngài: hãy phân cách khỏi các dân tộc của xứ và khỏi những người vợ ngoại bang. 12 Cả hội chúng bèn đáp lớn tiếng rằng: Phải, điều ông đã nói, chúng tôi phải làm theo; 13 song dân sự đông; và là nhằm mùa mưa, chúng tôi không có thể nào đứng ngoài; lại điều nầy chẳng phải là việc của một hoặc hai ngày, vì trong việc nầy chúng tôi đã phạm tội nhiều lắm. 14 Vậy, xin các quan trưởng chúng tôi hãy đứng ở đó đặng biện lý cho cả hội chúng; phàm ai trong các thành chúng tôi đã cưới lấy vợ ngoại bang, phải đến theo kỳ nhứt định, với các trưởng lão và quan xét của bổn thành, đặng sắp đặt việc nầy cho đến chừng đã nguôi cơn giận dữ của Đức Chúa Trời chúng tôi. 15 Chỉ Giô-na-than, con trai của A-sa-ên, và Gia-xi-gia, con trai Tiếc-va, phản cãi lời định nầy; và Mê-su-lam cùng Sáp-bê-tai, người Lê-vi, đều giúp cho họ. 16 Vậy, những người đã bị bắt làm phu tù được trở về làm theo điều đã nhứt định. Trong con cháu Giê-sua, chít của Giô-xa-đác, và trong các anh em người có Ma-a-xê-gia, Ê-li-ê-xe, Gia-ríp, và Ghê-đa-lia. 19 Chúng hứa đuổi vợ mình, và dâng một con chiên đực làm của lễ chuộc lỗi mình. 20 Trong con cháu Y-mê có Ha-na-ni và Xê-ba-đia. 21 Trong con cháu Ha-rim có Ma-a-xê-gia, Ê-li, Sê-ma-gia, Ghê-hi-ên, và U-xia. 22 Trong con cháu Pha-su-rơ có Ê-li-ô-ê-nai, Ma-a-xê-gia, Ích-ma-ên, Na-tha-na-ên, Giô-xa-bát, và Ê-lê-a-sa. 23 Trong người Lê-vi có Giô-xa-bát, Si-mê-i, Kê-la-gia (cũng gọi là Kê-li-ta), Phê-ta-hia, Giu-đa, và Ê-li-ê-xe. 24 Trong các người ca hát có Ê-li-a-síp; trong những người giữ cửa có Sa-lum, Tê-lem, và U-ri. 25 Trong dân Y-sơ-ra-ên: trong con cháu Pha-rốt có Ra-mia, Y-xia, Manh-ki-gia, Mi-gia-min, Ê-lê-a-sa, Manh-ki-gia, và Bê-na-gia. 26 Trong con cháu Ê-lam có Mát-ta-nia, Xa-cha-ri, Giê-hi-ên, Áp-đi, Giê-rê-mốt, và Ê-li. 27 Trong con cháu Xát-tu có Ê-li-ô-ê-nai, Ê-li-a-síp, Mát-ta-nia, Giê-rê-mốt, Xa-bát, và A-xi-xa. 28 Trong con cháu Bê-bai có Giô-ha-nan, Ha-na-nia, Xáp-bai, và Át-lai. 29 Trong con cháu Ba-ni có Mê-su-lam, Ma-lúc, A-đa-gia, Gia-sút, Sê-anh, và Ra-mốt. 30 Trong con cháu Pha-hát-Mô-áp có Át-na, Kê-lanh, Bê-na-gia, Ma-a-xê-gia, Mát-ta-nia, Bết-sa-lê-ên, Bin-nui, và Ma-na-se. 31 Trong con cháu Ha-rim có Ê-li-ê-xe, Di-si-gia, Manh-ki-gia, Sê-ma-gia, Si-mê-ôn, 32 Bên-gia-min, Ma-lúc, và Sê-ma-ria. 33 Trong con cháu Ha-sum có Mát-nai, Mát-ta-tha, Xa-bát, Ê-li-phê-lết, Giê-rê-mai, Ma-na-se, và Si-mê-i. 34 Trong con cháu Ba-ni có Ma-ê-đai, Am-ram, U-ên, 35 Bê-na-gia, Bê-đia, Kê-lu-hu, 36 Va-nia, Mê-rê-mốt, Ê-li-a-síp, 37 Mát-ta-nia, Mát-tê-nai, Gia-a-sai, 38 Ba-ni, Bin-nui, Si-mê-i, 39 Sê-lê-mia, Na-than, A-đa-gia, 40 Mác-nát-bai, Sa-sai, Sa-rai, 41 A-xa-rên, Sê-lê-mia, Sê-ma-ria, 42 Sa-lum, A-ma-ria, và Giô-sép. 43 Trong con cháu Nê-bô có Giê-i-ên, Ma-ti-thia, Xa-bát, Xê-bi-na, Giát-đai, Giô-ên và Bê-na-gia. 44 Hết thảy người ấy đã cưới vợ ngoại bang; và cũng có nhiều người trong bọn ấy có vợ đã sanh đẻ con.

Confession of Improper Marriages
1Now ⚓while Ezra was praying, and while he was confessing, weeping, and bowing down ⚓before the house of God, a very large assembly of men, women, and children gathered to him from Israel; for the people wept very ⚓bitterly. 2And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, spoke up and said to Ezra, “We have ⚓trespassed against our God, and have taken pagan wives from the peoples of the land; yet now there is hope in Israel in spite of this. 3Now therefore, let us make ⚓a covenant with our God to put away all these wives and those who have been born to them, according to the advice of my master and of those who ⚓tremble at ⚓the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the ⚓law. 4Arise, for this matter is your responsibility. We also are with you. ⚓Be of good courage, and do it.” 5Then Ezra arose, and made the leaders of the priests, the Levites, and all Israel ⚓swear an oath that they would do according to this word. So they swore an oath. 6Then Ezra rose up from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib; and when he came there, he ⚓ate no bread and drank no water, for he mourned because of the guilt of those from the captivity. 7And they issued a proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem to all the descendants of the captivity, that they must gather at Jerusalem, 8and that whoever would not come within three days, according to the instructions of the leaders and elders, all his property would be confiscated, and he himself would be separated from the assembly of those from the captivity. 9So all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered at Jerusalem within three days. It was the ninth month, on the twentieth of the month; and ⚓all the people sat in the open square of the house of God, trembling because of this matter and because of heavy rain. 10Then Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, “You have transgressed and have taken pagan wives, adding to the guilt of Israel. 11Now therefore, ⚓make confession to the Lord God of your fathers, and do His will; ⚓separate yourselves from the peoples of the land, and from the pagan wives.” 12Then all the assembly answered and said with a loud voice, “Yes! As you have said, so we must do. 13But thereare many people; itis the season for heavy rain, and we are not able to stand outside. Nor isthis the work of one or two days, for thereare many of us who have transgressed in this matter. 14Please, let the leaders of our entire assembly stand; and let all those in our cities who have taken pagan wives come at appointed times, together with the elders and judges of their cities, until ⚓the fierce wrath of our God is turned away from us in this matter.” 15Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahaziah the son of Tikvah opposed this, and ⚓Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite gave them support. 16Then the descendants of the captivity did so. And Ezra the priest, with certain ⚓heads of the fathers’ households, were set apart by the fathers’ households, each of them by name; and they sat down on the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter. 17By the first day of the first month they finished questioning all the men who had taken pagan wives.
Pagan Wives Put Away
18And among the sons of the priests who had taken pagan wives thefollowing were found of the sons of ⚓Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brothers: Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jarib, and Gedaliah. 19And they ⚓gave their promise that they would put away their wives; and being⚓guilty, theypresented a ram of the flock as their ⚓trespass offering. 20Also of the sons of Immer: Hanani and Zebadiah; 21of the sons of Harim: Maaseiah, Elijah, Shemaiah, Jehiel, and Uzziah; 22of the sons of Pashhur: Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad, and Elasah. 23Also of the Levites: Jozabad, Shimei, Kelaiah (the same is Kelita), Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer. 24Also of the singers: Eliashib; and of the gatekeepers: Shallum, Telem, and Uri. 25And others of Israel: of the ⚓sons of Parosh: Ramiah, Jeziah, Malchiah, Mijamin, Eleazar, Malchijah, and Benaiah; 26of the sons of Elam: Mattaniah, Zechariah, Jehiel, Abdi, Jeremoth, and Eliah; 27of the sons of Zattu: Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, Jeremoth, Zabad, and Aziza; 28of the ⚓sons of Bebai: Jehohanan, Hananiah, Zabbai, and Athlai; 29of the sons of Bani: Meshullam, Malluch, Adaiah, Jashub, Sheal, and Ramoth; 30of the ⚓sons of Pahath-Moab: Adna, Chelal, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattaniah, Bezalel, Binnui, and Manasseh; 31of the sons of Harim: Eliezer, Ishijah, Malchijah, Shemaiah, Shimeon, 32Benjamin, Malluch, and Shemariah; 33of the sons of Hashum: Mattenai, Mattattah, Zabad, Eliphelet, Jeremai, Manasseh, and Shimei; 34of the sons of Bani: Maadai, Amram, Uel, 35Benaiah, Bedeiah, Cheluh, 36Vaniah, Meremoth, Eliashib, 37Mattaniah, Mattenai, Jaasai, 38Bani, Binnui, Shimei, 39Shelemiah, Nathan, Adaiah, 40Machnadebai, Shashai, Sharai, 41Azarel, Shelemiah, Shemariah, 42Shallum, Amariah, and Joseph; 43of the sons of Nebo: Jeiel, Mattithiah, Zabad, Zebina, Jaddai, Joel, and Benaiah. 44All these had taken pagan wives, and some of them had wives bywhom they had children.
