The Sign of the Broken Flask
1Thus says the Lord: “Go and get a potter’s earthen flask, and take some of the elders of the people and some of the elders of the priests.
2And go out to ⚓the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, which is by the entry of the Potsherd Gate; and proclaim there the words that I will tell you,
3⚓and say, ‘Hear the word of the Lord, O kings of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem. Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: “Behold, I will bring such a catastrophe on this place, that whoever hears of it, his ears will ⚓tingle.
4“Because they ⚓have forsaken Me and made this an alien place, because they have burned incense in it to other gods whom neither they, their fathers, nor the kings of Judah have known, and have filled this place with ⚓the blood of the innocents
5⚓(they have also built the high places of Baal, to burn their sons with fire for burnt offerings to Baal, ⚓which I did not command or speak, nor did it come into My mind),
6therefore behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord, “that this place shall no more be called Tophet or ⚓the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter.
7And I will make void the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place, ⚓and I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies and by the hands of those who seek their lives; their ⚓corpses I will give as meat for the birds of the heaven and for the beasts of the earth.
8I will make this city ⚓desolate and a hissing; everyone who passes by it will be astonished and hiss because of all its plagues.
9And I will cause them to eat the ⚓flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and everyone shall eat the flesh of his friend in the siege and in the desperation with which their enemies and those who seek their lives shall drive them to despair.” ’
10⚓“Then you shall break the flask in the sight of the men who go with you,
11and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: ⚓“Even so I will break this people and this city, as one breaks a potter’s vessel, which cannot be made whole again; and they shall ⚓bury them in Tophet till there is no place to bury.
12Thus I will do to this place,” says the Lord, “and to its inhabitants, and make this city like Tophet.
13And the houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah shall be defiled ⚓like the place of Tophet, because of all the houses on whose ⚓roofs they have burned incense to all the host of heaven, and ⚓poured out drink offerings to other gods.” ’ ”
14Then Jeremiah came from Tophet, where the Lord had sent him to prophesy; and he stood in ⚓the court of the Lord’s house and said to all the people,
15“Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Behold, I will bring on this city and on all her towns all the doom that I have pronounced against it, because ⚓they have stiffened their necks that they might not hear My words.’ ”

Giu-đa như bình gốm bể
1CHÚA phán cùng tôi như sau: “Hãy đi mua một bình gốm từ tay thợ gốm.
2Hãy đem một vài bô lão của dân chúng cùng các thầy tế lễ đi với ngươi xuống thung lũng Bên-Hin-nôm, gần phía trước của Cổng Sành Bể⚓. Tại đó ngươi sẽ nói những lời ta bảo ngươi.
3Hãy nói rằng: Hỡi các vua Giu-đa và dân cư Giê-ru-sa-lem hãy nghe lời CHÚA phán. CHÚA Toàn Năng, Thượng Đế của Ít-ra-en phán: Ta sẽ sớm mang thảm họa đến nơi nầy. Thảm họa đó sẽ làm sửng sốt và kinh hoàng những ai nghe đến.
4Vì dân Giu-đa đã không theo ta nữa. Chúng đã biến nơi nầy thành nơi bái lạy các thần ngoại quốc. Chúng đã dâng sinh tế cho các thần khác mà chúng và tổ tiên hay các vua Giu-đa chưa hề biết. Chúng đổ máu vô tội tràn ngập nơi nầy.
5Chúng đã xây những nơi thờ lạy cho Ba-anh trên các đỉnh đồi, nơi chúng thiêu con mình cho Ba-anh. Đó là điều ta không dặn bảo cũng không nói đến; điều đó chưa hề nẩy trong trí ta.
6Cho nên hãy lưu ý, người ta gọi nơi nầy là Thung lũng của Bên-Hin-nôm hay Tô-phết, nhưng CHÚA phán, sẽ đến ngày mà người ta gọi nơi đó là Thung lũng giết chóc.
7Tại nơi nầy ta sẽ phá hỏng chương trình của dân Giu-đa và Giê-ru-sa-lem. Các kẻ thù sẽ rượt đuổi chúng nó, và ta sẽ khiến chúng bị gươm giết. Ta sẽ cho chim trời và muông thú ăn xác chết chúng nó.
8Ta sẽ hoàn toàn tiêu diệt thành nầy. Người ta sẽ chế giễu nó và ai qua lại nơi đây cũng phải lắc đầu. Họ sẽ sửng sốt khi thấy thành nầy bị tiêu hủy như thế nào.
9Một đạo quân thù sẽ bao vây thành, không cho ai đi ra để kiếm thức ăn. Ta sẽ khiến chúng bị đói đến nỗi chúng phải ăn thịt con trai con gái mình và rồi ăn thịt lẫn nhau.
10Trong khi những kẻ đi với ngươi đang nhìn thì hãy đập bể bình gốm đó.
11Rồi nói như sau: CHÚA Toàn Năng phán: Ta sẽ đập dân nầy và thành nầy ra như người ta đập bể bình gốm tan tành đến nỗi không thể hàn gắn lại được. Những kẻ chết sẽ bị chôn ở đây, tại Tô-phết, vì không còn nơi nào khác để chôn chúng.
12Đây là điều ta sẽ làm cho dân nầy và nơi nầy, CHÚA phán vậy. Ta sẽ khiến thành nầy trở thành Tô-phết.
13Nhà cửa trong Giê-ru-sa-lem và các cung vua sẽ trở nên nhơ nhớp như nơi Tô-phết nầy vì dân chúng đã bái lạy các thần trên mái nhà⚓ chúng. Chúng bái lạy các ngôi sao, đốt hương tôn kính chúng và dâng của lễ uống cho các thần khác.”
14Sau khi Giê-rê-mi rời Tô-phết, nơi CHÚA bảo ông nói tiên tri thì ông đi đến đền thờ Chúa, đứng trong sân và nói cùng toàn dân rằng:
15“CHÚA Toàn Năng, Thượng Đế của Ít-ra-en phán: ‘Ta sẽ sớm mang đại nạn đến cho Giê-ru-sa-lem và các làng mạc quanh nó như ta đã nói trước. Việc đó sẽ xảy ra vì dân chúng rất ngoan cố không thèm nghe lời ta phán.’”
