Principles of Separation

¹On that day ⚓they read from the Book of Moses in the hearing of the people, and in it was found written ⚓that no Ammonite or Moabite should ever come into the assembly of God, ²because they had not met the children of Israel with bread and water, but ⚓hired Balaam against them to curse them. ⚓However, our God turned the curse into a blessing. ³So it was, when they had heard the Law, ⚓that they separated all the mixed multitude from Israel.

The Reforms of Nehemiah

⁴Now before this, ⚓Eliashib the priest, having authority over the storerooms of the house of our God, was allied with ⚓Tobiah. ⁵And he had prepared for him a large room, ⚓where previously they had stored the grain offerings, the frankincense, the articles, the tithes of grain, the new wine and oil, ⚓which were commanded to be given to the Levites and singers and gatekeepers, and the offerings for the priests. ⁶But during all this I was not in Jerusalem, ⚓for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I had returned to the king. Then after certain days I obtained leave from the king, ⁷and I came to Jerusalem and discovered the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, in ⚓preparing a room for him in the courts of the house of God. ⁸And it grieved me bitterly; therefore I threw all the household goods of Tobiah out of the room. ⁹Then I commanded them to ⚓cleanse the rooms; and I brought back into them the articles of the house of God, with the grain offering and the frankincense.
¹⁰I also realized that the portions for the Levites had ⚓not been given them; for each of the Levites and the singers who did the work had gone back to ⚓his field. ¹¹So ⚓I contended with the rulers, and said, ⚓“Why is the house of God forsaken?” And I gathered them together and set them in their place. ¹²⚓Then all Judah brought the tithe of the grain and the new wine and the oil to the storehouse. ¹³⚓And I appointed as treasurers over the storehouse Shelemiah the priest and Zadok the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah; and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah; for they were considered ⚓faithful, and their task was to distribute to their brethren.
¹⁴⚓Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and do not wipe out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God, and for its services!
¹⁵In those days I saw people in Judah treading wine presses ⚓on the Sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and loading donkeys with wine, grapes, figs, and all kinds of burdens, ⚓which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. And I warned them about the day on which they were selling provisions. ¹⁶Men of Tyre dwelt there also, who brought in fish and all kinds of goods, and sold them on the Sabbath to the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem.
¹⁷Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said to them, “What evil thing is this that you do, by which you profane the Sabbath day? ¹⁸⚓Did not your fathers do thus, and did not our God bring all this disaster on us and on this city? Yet you bring added wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath.”
¹⁹So it was, at the gates of Jerusalem, as it ⚓began to be dark before the Sabbath, that I commanded the gates to be shut, and charged that they must not be opened till after the Sabbath. ⚓Then I posted some of my servants at the gates, so that no burdens would be brought in on the Sabbath day. ²⁰Now the merchants and sellers of all kinds of wares lodged outside Jerusalem once or twice.
²¹Then I warned them, and said to them, “Why do you spend the night around the wall? If you do so again, I will lay hands on you!” From that time on they came no more on the Sabbath. ²²And I commanded the Levites that ⚓they should cleanse themselves, and that they should go and guard the gates, to sanctify the Sabbath day.
Remember me, O my God, concerning this also, and spare me according to the greatness of Your mercy!
²³In those days I also saw Jews who⚓had married women of ⚓Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab. ²⁴And half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod, and could not speak the language of Judah, but spoke according to the language of one or the other people.
²⁵So I ⚓contended with them and cursed them, struck some of them and pulled out their hair, and made them ⚓swear by God, saying, “You shall not give your daughters as wives to their sons, nor take their daughters for your sons or yourselves. ²⁶⚓Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? Yet among many nations there was no king like him, ⚓who was beloved of his God; and God made him king over all Israel. ⚓Nevertheless pagan women caused even him to sin. ²⁷Should we then hear of your doing all this great evil, ⚓transgressing against our God by marrying pagan women?”
²⁸And one of the sons ⚓of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was a son-in-law of ⚓Sanballat the Horonite; therefore I drove him from me.
²⁹⚓Remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood and ⚓the covenant of the priesthood and the Levites.
³⁰⚓Thus I cleansed them of everything pagan. I also ⚓assigned duties to the priests and the Levites, each to his service, ³¹and to bringing⚓the wood offering and the firstfruits at appointed times.
⚓Remember me, O my God, for good!

¹Hôm ấy, khi dân chúng nghe đọc kinh luật Môi-se, họ thấy có ghi chép rằng người Am-môn và người Mô-áp đời đời không được gia nhập hội chúng của những người tôn thờ Đức Chúa Trời, ²vì họ chẳng những không mang bánh nước ra tiếp đón, lại còn mướn Ba-la-am nguyền rủa dân Y-sơ-ra-ên, mặc dù Đức Chúa Trời đã đổi lời nguyền rủa thành lời chúc phước. ³Nghe đến quy luật này, dân Y-sơ-ra-ên liền tách biệt khỏi những người có gốc ngoại lai.

Cải Tổ Trong Đền Thờ

⁴Tuy nhiên, trước đây, thầy tế lễ Ê-li-a-síp, người có trách nhiệm quản lý các phòng kho trong đền thờ, lại có họ hàng với Tô-bia, ⁵nên dành cho Tô-bia một phòng rộng, là nơi trước kia chứa lễ vật ngũ cốc, nhũ hương, các dụng cụ (của đền thờ), lễ vật phần mười về lúa mì, rượu mới, và dầu theo như quy định cho người Lê-vi, các ca nhạc sĩ, và người gác cổng, cùng với lễ vật dâng lên cho các thầy tế lễ. ⁶Trong thời gian đó, tôi không có mặt tại Giê-ru-sa-lem, vì tôi đã về bệ kiến vua vào năm thứ ba mươi hai triều Át-ta-xét-xe, vua Ba-by-lôn. Cách ít lâu, tôi xin phép vua, ⁷và trở về Giê-ru-sa-lem. Bây giờ tôi mới khám phá ra việc tệ hại Ê-li-a-síp đã làm, dọn cho Tô-bia một phòng riêng ngay trong khuôn viên đền thờ. ⁸Tôi nổi giận, ném tất cả đồ đạc của Tô-bia ra khỏi phòng. ⁹Tôi ra lệnh tẩy uế các phòng, rồi đem trở về phòng các dụng cụ của đền thờ, lễ vật ngũ cốc, và nhũ hương.
¹⁰Tôi còn biết người Lê-vi không được cấp phần lương thực theo như Kinh Luật quy định, vì thế họ và các ca nhạc sĩ bỏ chức vụ, trốn về nhà làm ruộng.⚓ ¹¹Tôi khiển trách các viên chức: “Tại sao đền thờ Đức Chúa Trời bị bỏ bê như vậy?” Rồi tôi tập họp những người Lê-vi lại, và phục hồi chức vụ cho họ. ¹²Bấy giờ toàn dân Giu-đa mang phần mười lúa mì, rượu mới, và dầu dâng vào kho. ¹³Tôi chỉ định thầy tế lễ Sê-lê-mia, thư ký Xa-đốc, Phê-đa-gia, là người Lê-vi, quản lý kho đền thờ, và Ha-nan, con Xác-cua, cháu Mát-tan-gia, làm phụ tá cho họ, vì những người này được tín nhiệm; họ có bổn phận chia phần cho các anh em mình.
¹⁴Cầu xin Đức Chúa Trời ghi nhận cho con việc này, xin Ngài cũng đừng quên⚓ những việc lành con đã trung tín làm cho đền thờ Chúa, để phục vụ Ngài.

Tuân Giữ Ngày Sa-bát

¹⁵Vào thời ấy, tôi bắt gặp một số người ở Giu-đa đạp bàn ép nho vào ngày Sa-bát. Họ cũng chất cả đống nông sản lên lưng lừa, nào rượu, nho, trái vả, và đủ loại sản vật, mang về Giê-ru-sa-lem vào ngày Sa-bát. Tôi cảnh cáo họ, không cho họ bán các thực phẩm ấy.⚓ ¹⁶Ngoài ra, người Ty-rơ sống tại đây,⚓ cũng đem cá và đủ loại hàng hóa về bán cho người Giu-đa ở Giê-ru-sa-lem vào ngày Sa-bát. ¹⁷Tôi khiển trách giới quý tộc của Giu-đa: “Anh em làm chuyện gì gian ác vậy? Anh em vi phạm ngày Sa-bát! ¹⁸Có phải tổ tiên chúng ta cũng đã làm y như vậy không, khiến cho Đức Chúa Trời giáng tất cả những tai họa này trên chúng ta và thành này? Bây giờ anh em lại vi phạm ngày Sa-bát, khiến cho cơn giận đổ xuống dân Y-sơ-ra-ên càng tăng thêm!” ¹⁹Khi cổng thành Giê-ru-sa-lem khởi sự yên tĩnh⚓ trước ngày Sa-bát, tôi ra lệnh đóng cổng luôn, không được mở cho đến sau ngày Sa-bát. Tôi cũng cắt mấy gia nhân của tôi đứng gác tại cổng, không cho ai đem hàng hóa vào trong ngày Sa-bát.
²⁰Tuy nhiên, những người buôn bán đủ các mặt hàng ngủ lại bên ngoài thành Giê-ru-sa-lem một đôi lần. ²¹Tôi cảnh cáo họ: “Tại sao các anh lại ngủ ngay bên tường thành thế này? Nếu các anh còn tiếp tục làm như vậy, tôi sẽ cho người bắt các anh.” Từ đấy, họ không đến vào ngày Sa-bát nữa. ²²Tôi cũng ra lệnh cho người Lê-vi dọn mình thanh sạch đến gác cổng thành để giữ ngày Sa-bát thánh khiết.
Cầu xin Đức Chúa Trời ghi nhận thêm cho con điều này, và cầu xin Ngài bảo toàn mạng sống con⚓ tùy theo lòng thương xót lớn lao và trung kiên của Ngài.

Chính Sách Chống Hôn Nhân Ngoại Tộc

²³Cũng vào thời gian ấy, tôi thấy có những người Giu-đa cưới phụ nữ Ách-đốt, Am-môn, và Mô-áp. ²⁴Phân nửa con cái họ nói tiếng Ách-đốt, hoặc tiếng của dân tộc này dân tộc nọ, chứ không nói được tiếng của người Giu-đa. ²⁵Tôi quở trách, nguyền rủa họ, thậm chí đánh một vài người và bứt tóc họ. Tôi buộc họ thề nhân danh Đức Chúa Trời: “Anh em không được gả con gái mình cho con trai họ, cũng không được cưới con gái họ cho mình hoặc con trai mình. ²⁶Có phải Sa-lô-môn, vua Y-sơ-ra-ên, cũng phạm tội vì cớ những người đàn bà ấy không? Trong biết bao nhiêu dân tộc, không có vua nào như vua Sa-lô-môn. Vua được Đức Chúa Trời yêu, được Ngài lập lên làm vua cả nước Y-sơ-ra-ên. Thế mà, ngay cả vua cũng bị vợ ngoại tộc xui cho phạm tội. ²⁷Lẽ nào chúng tôi nghe theo anh em, để cho anh em phạm tội ác lớn lao này, cư xử bất trung với Đức Chúa Trời, cưới vợ ngoại tộc sao?”
²⁸Một người con của Giô-gia-đa, con thầy thượng tế Ê-li-a-síp, cưới con gái⚓ San-ba-lát, người Hô-rôn, nên tôi đuổi người ấy đi.
²⁹Xin Đức Chúa Trời nhớ cho, họ đã làm ô uế chức tế lễ, và làm ô uế⚓ giao ước Ngài lập với các thầy tế lễ và người Lê-vi.
³⁰Tôi thanh lọc khỏi họ mọi điều gì dính dáng đến nước ngoài. Tôi quy định trách nhiệm riêng cho từng người, cho các thầy tế lễ và người Lê-vi. ³¹Tôi cũng sắp xếp việc dâng củi vào ngày giờ nhất định, và việc dâng hoa quả đầu mùa.
Cầu xin Đức Chúa Trời nhớ đến con và ban ơn cho con!
