Conspiracy Against Nehemiah
1Now it happened ⚓when Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab, and the rest of our enemies heard that I had rebuilt the wall, and that there were no breaks left in it ⚓(though at that time I had not hung the doors in the gates),
2that Sanballat and Geshem ⚓sent to me, saying, “Come, let us meet together among the villages in the plain of ⚓Ono.” But they ⚓thought to do me harm.
3So I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down. Why should the work cease while I leave it and go down to you?”
4But they sent me this message four times, and I answered them in the same manner.
5Then Sanballat sent his servant to me as before, the fifth time, with an open letter in his hand.
6In it was written:
It is reported among the nations, and Geshem says, that you and the Jews plan to rebel; therefore, according to these rumors, you are rebuilding the wall, ⚓that you may be their king.
7And you have also appointed prophets to proclaim concerning you at Jerusalem, saying, “There is a king in Judah!” Now these matters will be reported to the king. So come, therefore, and let us consult together.
8Then I sent to him, saying, “No such things as you say are being done, but you invent them in your own heart.”
9For they all were trying to make us afraid, saying, “Their hands will be weakened in the work, and it will not be done.”
Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands.
10Afterward I came to the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel, who was a secret informer; and he said, “Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us close the doors of the temple, for they are coming to kill you; indeed, at night they will come to kill you.”
11And I said, “Should such a man as I flee? And who is there such as I who would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in!”
12Then I perceived that God had not sent him at all, but that ⚓he pronounced this prophecy against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.
13For this reason he was hired, that I should be afraid and act that way and sin, so that they might have cause for an evil report, that they might reproach me.
14⚓My God, remember Tobiah and Sanballat, according to these their works, and the ⚓prophetess Noadiah and the rest of the prophets who would have made me afraid.
The Wall Completed
15So the wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of Elul, in fifty-two days.
16And it happened, ⚓when all our enemies heard of it, and all the nations around us saw these things, that they were very disheartened in their own eyes; for ⚓they perceived that this work was done by our God.
17Also in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobiah, and the letters of Tobiah came to them.
18For many in Judah were pledged to him, because he was the ⚓son-in-law of Shechaniah the son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of ⚓Meshullam the son of Berechiah.
19Also they reported his good deeds before me, and reported my words to him. Tobiah sent letters to frighten me.

Đức tin chịu thử thách
1Khi San-ba-lát, Tô-bia, Ghê-sem người Á-rạp và những kẻ thù khác của chúng tôi nghe tin tường thành đã xây xong, không còn nơi nào hư thủng nữa, (mặc dù lúc ấy chúng tôi chưa tra các cánh cổng),
2họ sai người đến nói với chúng tôi: "Mời ông đến hội nghị tại một làng trong đồng bằng O-no." Nhưng thực ra, họ âm mưu ám hại tôi.
3Tôi cho người trả lời: "Tôi đang thực hiện công tác lớn lao, không thể bỏ việc, đi gặp các ông được."
4Họ tiếp tục sai người đến, cả thảy là bốn lần, đòi tôi đến gặp họ như thế, nhưng bốn lần tôi đều từ chối.
5Lần thứ năm, San-ba-lát sai người đến, và cũng như trước, người này cầm một phong thư không niêm.
6Thư viết: "Tiếng đồn về ông lan khắp các nước, và chính Ghê-sem cũng báo cáo rằng ông âm mưu cùng người Giu-đa làm phản, vì thế mới xây tường thành này. Ông trù tính làm vua Giu-đa
7nên sai người nói tiên tri về mình rằng 'Có một vua ở Giu-đa.' Và dĩ nhiên, những lời này sẽ được báo cáo lên vua. Vậy tốt hơn, ta nên thảo luận với nhau."
8,9Tôi sai người đáp: "Không hề có những chuyện ấy. Ông chỉ khéo tưởng tượng." Họ tưởng có thể dọa chúng tôi sợ, để chúng tôi bỏ việc đang làm. (Xin Thượng đế làm cho con vững chí!)
10Sau đó, tôi đến thăm Sê-ma-gia (con Đê-la-gia, cháu Mê-hê-ta-bê-ên), một ẩn sĩ. Người này nói: "Chúng ta phải vào Đền thờ, cài cửa lại, vì tối nay họ sẽ đến giết ông."
11Tôi trả lời: "Một người như tôi thế này chạy trốn sao được? Hơn nữa, tôi đâu được vào Đền thờ để lánh nạn?⚓Tôi không vào đâu."
12Tôi biết người này không phải là người của Thượng Đế, nhưng nói tiên tri nghịch tôi vì đã bị Tô-bia và San-ba-lát mua chuộc.
13Người này được mướn để làm cho tôi sợ, vào trốn trong Đền thờ và như thế phạm tội và rồi họ sẽ có cớ buộc tội tôi.
14(Cầu xin Thượng Đế đừng quên những điều Tô-bia, San-ba-lát đã làm; xin cũng đừng quên nữ tiên tri Nô-a-đia và các tiên tri khác là những người định làm cho con khiếp đảm).
15Ngày hai mươi lăm tháng Ê-lun, tường thành sửa xong. Công tác này thực hiện trong năm mươi hai ngày.
16Khi kẻ thù chúng tôi, những dân tộc láng giềng nghe tin này đều chán nản, hổ thẹn, vì biết rằng công tác này hoàn tất được là nhờ Thượng Đế của chúng tôi giúp đỡ.
17Tuy nhiên, trong thời gian ấy, một số người Giu-đa có địa vị lại thường liên lạc thư từ với Tô-bia.
18Trong Giu-đa có nhiều người thề giúp Tô-bia, vì người này là con rể của Sê-ca-nia (con A-ra), và Giô-ha-nan con Tô-bia lại cưới con gái Mê-su-lam (con Bê-rê-kia).
19Những người này hùa theo Tô-bia trước mặt tôi, đồng thời, họ đem những lời tôi nói học lại hết cho Tô-bia, và Tô-bia gửi cho tôi nhiều thư đe dọa.
