Conspiracy Against Nehemiah

¹Now it happened ⚓when Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab, and the rest of our enemies heard that I had rebuilt the wall, and that there were no breaks left in it ⚓(though at that time I had not hung the doors in the gates), ²that Sanballat and Geshem ⚓sent to me, saying, “Come, let us meet together among the villages in the plain of ⚓Ono.” But they ⚓thought to do me harm.
³So I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down. Why should the work cease while I leave it and go down to you?”
⁴But they sent me this message four times, and I answered them in the same manner.
⁵Then Sanballat sent his servant to me as before, the fifth time, with an open letter in his hand. ⁶In it was written:
It is reported among the nations, and Geshem says, that you and the Jews plan to rebel; therefore, according to these rumors, you are rebuilding the wall, ⚓that you may be their king. ⁷And you have also appointed prophets to proclaim concerning you at Jerusalem, saying, “There is a king in Judah!” Now these matters will be reported to the king. So come, therefore, and let us consult together.
⁸Then I sent to him, saying, “No such things as you say are being done, but you invent them in your own heart.”
⁹For they all were trying to make us afraid, saying, “Their hands will be weakened in the work, and it will not be done.”
Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands.
¹⁰Afterward I came to the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel, who was a secret informer; and he said, “Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us close the doors of the temple, for they are coming to kill you; indeed, at night they will come to kill you.”
¹¹And I said, “Should such a man as I flee? And who is there such as I who would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in!” ¹²Then I perceived that God had not sent him at all, but that ⚓he pronounced this prophecy against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him. ¹³For this reason he was hired, that I should be afraid and act that way and sin, so that they might have cause for an evil report, that they might reproach me.
¹⁴⚓My God, remember Tobiah and Sanballat, according to these their works, and the ⚓prophetess Noadiah and the rest of the prophets who would have made me afraid.

The Wall Completed

¹⁵So the wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of Elul, in fifty-two days. ¹⁶And it happened, ⚓when all our enemies heard of it, and all the nations around us saw these things, that they were very disheartened in their own eyes; for ⚓they perceived that this work was done by our God.
¹⁷Also in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobiah, and the letters of Tobiah came to them. ¹⁸For many in Judah were pledged to him, because he was the ⚓son-in-law of Shechaniah the son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of ⚓Meshullam the son of Berechiah. ¹⁹Also they reported his good deeds before me, and reported my words to him. Tobiah sent letters to frighten me.

¹Khi San-ba-lát, Tô-bia, Ghê-sem người Ả-rập, và những kẻ thù khác của chúng tôi nghe tin tôi đã xây lại tường thành, và không còn nơi nào hư thủng nữa, mặc dù lúc ấy tôi chưa tra các cánh cổng, ²San-ba-lát và Ghê-sem sai người đến nói với tôi: “Mời ông đến họp với chúng tôi tại Kê-phi-rim,⚓ trong đồng bằng Ô-nô.” Nhưng họ mưu toan hại tôi, ³cho nên tôi sai người đáp lời họ: “Tôi bận thực hiện một công tác lớn lao. Tôi không thể xuống được, e công việc đình trệ trong khi tôi bỏ việc xuống gặp các ông.” ⁴Họ sai người đến mời tôi bốn lần như vậy, và lần nào tôi cũng đáp lời họ y như nhau.
⁵Lần thứ năm, San-ba-lát sai gia nhân đến với tôi y như trước, nhưng lần này kèm theo một phong thư không niêm. ⁶Thư viết: “Tin đồn lan khắp các nước, và chính Gát-mu⚓ cũng xác nhận tin ấy, rằng ông âm mưu cùng người Giu-đa làm phản, vì thế ông mới xây tường thành này. Theo tin đồn, ông sẽ làm vua họ. ⁷Ông cũng đã sắp xếp cho các tiên tri rao báo về ông tại Giê-ru-sa-lem rằng ‘Có một vua ở Giu-đa.’ Tất nhiên vua sẽ nghe những tin này. Vậy mời ông đến, chúng ta cùng nhau thảo luận.”
⁸Tôi sai người đáp: “Những chuyện ông nói chẳng hề xảy ra. Ông chỉ tưởng tượng trong đầu ông thôi.” ⁹Tất cả những người ấy đều tìm cách dọa chúng tôi sợ vì họ nghĩ rằng: “Chúng sẽ nản chí buông xuôi, và công việc sẽ không hoàn thành.” Nhưng tôi lại càng quyết tâm làm việc hơn nữa.⚓
¹⁰Sau đó, tôi đến thăm Sê-ma-gia, con Đê-la-gia, cháu Mê-hê-ta-bên, vì ông sống biệt lập tại nhà. Ông nói:
“Chúng ta hãy gặp nhau tại đền thờ Đức Chúa Trời,
Ngay bên trong đền thánh,
Rồi chúng ta hãy đóng cửa đền thánh lại,
Vì họ sẽ đến để giết ông,
Họ sẽ đến giết ông trong ban đêm!”
¹¹Tôi đáp: “Một người trong địa vị tôi lẽ nào lại chạy trốn sao? Hơn nữa, có người nào như tôi vào đền thánh mà được sống đâu? Tôi không vào đâu.” ¹²Bấy giờ tôi nhận ra rằng Đức Chúa Trời không có sai ông, nhưng ông đã nói tiên tri nghịch lại tôi vì Tô-bia và San-ba-lát đã mua chuộc ông. ¹³Chúng mua chuộc ông để làm cho tôi sợ hoảng rồi hành động theo như lời ông ta đề nghị,⚓ vậy tôi sẽ phạm tội, mang tiếng xấu, và chúng sẽ có cớ lăng nhục tôi.
¹⁴Lạy Đức Chúa Trời của con, xin Ngài nhớ lại những điều Tô-bia và San-ba-lát đã làm! Con cũng xin Ngài nhớ lại nữ tiên tri Nê-a-đia và các tiên tri khác, thế nào họ đã tìm cách làm cho con khiếp sợ!

Hoàn Tất Tường Thành

¹⁵Ngày hai mươi lăm tháng Ê-lun,⚓ tường thành hoàn tất trong năm mươi hai ngày. ¹⁶Khi hết thảy những kẻ thù của chúng tôi nghe tin ấy, tất cả những dân tộc láng giềng đều khiếp sợ, họ xuống tinh thần nhiều lắm, vì họ biết rằng công trình này thực hiện được là nhờ Đức Chúa Trời chúng tôi giúp đỡ.
¹⁷Cũng trong thời gian ấy, giới quý tộc của Giu-đa gửi nhiều thư cho Tô-bia và Tô-bia cũng gửi thư lại cho họ, ¹⁸vì có nhiều người trong Giu-đa thề giúp Tô-bia, vì hắn là con rễ của Sê-ca-nia, con A-ra, và Giô-ha-nan, con Tô-bia, lại cưới con gái Mê-su-lam, con Bê-rê-kia. ¹⁹Họ thường ca ngợi Tô-bia trước mặt tôi, và học lại cho hắn những lời tôi nói. Còn Tô-bia thì gửi nhiều thư đe dọa tôi.
