Promises to Abram
1Now the ⚓Lord had said to Abram:
“Get ⚓out of your country,
From your family
And from your father’s house,
To a land that I will show you.
2⚓I will make you a great nation;
⚓I will bless you
And make your name great;
⚓And you shall be a blessing.
3⚓I will bless those who bless you,
And I will curse him who curses you;
And in ⚓you all the families of the earth shall be ⚓blessed.”
4So Abram departed as the Lord had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.
5Then Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother’s son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and ⚓the people whom they had acquired in ⚓Haran, and they ⚓departed to go to the land of Canaan. So they came to the land of Canaan.
6Abram ⚓passed through the land to the place of Shechem, ⚓as far as the terebinth tree of Moreh. ⚓And the Canaanites were then in the land.
7⚓Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, ⚓“To your descendants I will give this land.” And there he built an ⚓altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him.
8And he moved from there to the mountain east of Bethel, and he pitched his tent with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; there he built an altar to the Lord and ⚓called on the name of the Lord.
9So Abram journeyed, ⚓going on still toward the South.
Abram in Egypt
10Now there was ⚓a famine in the land, and Abram ⚓went down to Egypt to dwell there, for the famine was⚓severe in the land.
11And it came to pass, when he was close to entering Egypt, that he said to Sarai his wife, “Indeed I know that you are⚓a woman of beautiful countenance.
12Therefore it will happen, when the Egyptians see you, that they will say, ‘This is his wife’; and they ⚓will kill me, but they will let you live.
13⚓Please say you are my ⚓sister, that it may be well with me for your sake, and that I may live because of you.”
14So it was, when Abram came into Egypt, that the Egyptians saw the woman, that she was very beautiful.
15The princes of Pharaoh also saw her and commended her to Pharaoh. And the woman was taken to Pharaoh’s house.
16He ⚓treated Abram well for her sake. He ⚓had sheep, oxen, male donkeys, male and female servants, female donkeys, and camels.
17But the Lord⚓plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife.
18And Pharaoh called Abram and said, ⚓“What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife?
19Why did you say, ‘She is my sister’? I might have taken her as my wife. Now therefore, here is your wife; take her and go your way.”
20⚓So Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him; and they sent him away, with his wife and all that he had.

Áp-ram được ơn Chúa chọn
1Chúa Hằng Hữu bảo Áp-ram: "Hãy lìa quê cha đất tổ, bỏ họ hàng thân thuộc, đi đến xứ Ta sẽ chỉ định.
2Ta sẽ cho con trở thành tổ phụ một dân tộc lớn. Ta sẽ ban phúc, làm rạng danh con, và con sẽ đem hạnh phúc cho nhiều người.
3Ta sẽ giáng phúc trên người cầu phúc cho con, nguyền rủa người nào nguyền rủa con. Tất cả các dân tộc trên mặt đất sẽ do con mà được hạnh phúc."
Áp-ram đến xứ Ca-na-an
4Vậy, Áp-ram ra đi như lời Chúa Hằng Hữu đã dạy. Lót cùng đi với ông. Khi rời khỏi Ha-ran, Áp-ram được 75 tuổi.
5Áp-ram đem Sa-rai vợ mình, Lót, cháu mình cùng tất cả cơ nghiệp - tôi tớ, súc vật - đã gây dựng tại Ha-ran để đi đến xứ Ca-na-an. Và họ đều đến Ca-na-an.
6Áp-ram vào sâu trong xứ Ca-na-an, đến gần Si-chem, dựng trại bên cây sồi tại Mô-rê.
7Chúa Hằng Hữu hiện ra bảo Áp-ram: "Ta sẽ cho dòng dõi con xứ này." Áp-ram dựng bàn thờ tưởng niệm Chúa Hằng Hữu.
8Sau đó, Áp-ram xuống vùng đồi núi giữa Bê-tên và A-hi (Bê-tên phía đông, A-hi phía tây). Tại đó ông dựng trại, lập bàn thờ cho Chúa Hằng Hữu và cầu nguyện với Ngài.
9Ông tiếp tục đi dần về hướng Nam cho đến Nê-ghép.⚓
Áp-ram xuống Ai-cập
10Lúc ấy, nạn đói lớn xảy đến trong xứ, nên Áp-ram lánh sang Ai-cập.
11Khi sắp vào lãnh thổ Ai-cập, Áp-ram bảo Sa-rai: "Tôi biết bà rất đẹp.
12Nếu người Ai-cập nhìn thấy bà, lại biết bà là vợ tôi, họ sẽ giết tôi để cướp bà.⚓
13Xin bà hãy nói là em gái tôi. Nhờ bà, họ sẽ hậu đãi và tha mạng cho tôi."
14Quả nhiên đến Ai-cập, mọi người đều trằm trồ về nhan sắc Sa-rai.
15Triều thần Ai-cập thấy bà liền ca tụng với vua, và bà bị đưa vào hậu cung.
16Nhờ bà, vua hậu đãi Áp-ram, cho ông nhiều chiên, bò, lừa, lạc đà và tôi tớ nam nữ.
17Nhưng cũng vì Sa-rai, Chúa Hằng Hữu giáng tai họa khủng khiếp trên vua và cả hoàng cung Ai-cập.
18Vua cho đòi Áp-ram vào trách: "Sao ngươi nỡ hại ta như thế?⚓ Sao không nói là vợ ngươi?
19Sao lại nói là em gái, để ta lấy làm vợ. Bây giờ, vợ ngươi đây, hãy đem đi."
20Vua ra lệnh cho quân sĩ hộ tống Áp-ram, vợ, tôi tớ và tài sản của ông ra khỏi Ai-cập.
