Promises to Abram
1Now the ⚓Lord had said to Abram:
“Get ⚓out of your country,
From your family
And from your father’s house,
To a land that I will show you.
2⚓I will make you a great nation;
⚓I will bless you
And make your name great;
⚓And you shall be a blessing.
3⚓I will bless those who bless you,
And I will curse him who curses you;
And in ⚓you all the families of the earth shall be ⚓blessed.”
4So Abram departed as the Lord had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.
5Then Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother’s son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and ⚓the people whom they had acquired in ⚓Haran, and they ⚓departed to go to the land of Canaan. So they came to the land of Canaan.
6Abram ⚓passed through the land to the place of Shechem, ⚓as far as the terebinth tree of Moreh. ⚓And the Canaanites were then in the land.
7⚓Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, ⚓“To your descendants I will give this land.” And there he built an ⚓altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him.
8And he moved from there to the mountain east of Bethel, and he pitched his tent with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; there he built an altar to the Lord and ⚓called on the name of the Lord.
9So Abram journeyed, ⚓going on still toward the South.
Abram in Egypt
10Now there was ⚓a famine in the land, and Abram ⚓went down to Egypt to dwell there, for the famine was⚓severe in the land.
11And it came to pass, when he was close to entering Egypt, that he said to Sarai his wife, “Indeed I know that you are⚓a woman of beautiful countenance.
12Therefore it will happen, when the Egyptians see you, that they will say, ‘This is his wife’; and they ⚓will kill me, but they will let you live.
13⚓Please say you are my ⚓sister, that it may be well with me for your sake, and that I may live because of you.”
14So it was, when Abram came into Egypt, that the Egyptians saw the woman, that she was very beautiful.
15The princes of Pharaoh also saw her and commended her to Pharaoh. And the woman was taken to Pharaoh’s house.
16He ⚓treated Abram well for her sake. He ⚓had sheep, oxen, male donkeys, male and female servants, female donkeys, and camels.
17But the Lord⚓plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife.
18And Pharaoh called Abram and said, ⚓“What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife?
19Why did you say, ‘She is my sister’? I might have taken her as my wife. Now therefore, here is your wife; take her and go your way.”
20⚓So Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him; and they sent him away, with his wife and all that he had.

Thượng Đế gọi Áp-ram
1CHÚA bảo Áp-ram, “Hãy rời bỏ xứ sở,
thân nhân và gia đình cha con,
đi đến xứ ta sẽ chỉ cho.
2Ta sẽ làm cho con trở thành một dân lớn
và sẽ ban phước cho con.
Ta sẽ khiến con nổi danh
và là nguồn phước cho nhiều người.
3Ta sẽ ban phước cho kẻ chúc phước con
và nguyền rủa kẻ hại con.
Mọi dân tộc trên đất sẽ nhờ con
mà được phước.”
Áp-ram đi đến vùng Ca-na-an
4Vậy Áp-ram rời Ha-ran theo như CHÚA đã dặn bảo, có Lót cùng đi. Lúc đó Áp-ram đã 75 tuổi.
5Ông mang Sa-rai vợ mình, Lót cháu mình và mọi vật thuộc về mình cùng các đầy tớ ông đã có tại Ha-ran và lên đường ra đi, dự định đến đất Ca-na-an, sau cùng thì tới nơi.
6Áp-ram đi qua suốt cả xứ đến tận cây sồi lớn Mô-rê thuộc Sê-chem. Lúc đó dân Ca-na-an đang cư ngụ trong xứ nầy.
7CHÚA hiện ra⚓ cùng Áp-ram và bảo, “Ta sẽ cấp đất nầy cho dòng dõi con.” Vì thế tại đó, Áp-ram xây một bàn thờ cho CHÚA, Đấng đã hiện ra cùng ông.
8Rồi từ Sê-chem ông đi đến núi phía đông của Bê-tên và dựng trại tại đó. Bê-tên nằm về phía tây, còn A-hi⚓ nằm về phía đông. Nơi ấy Áp-ram xây một bàn thờ nữa cho CHÚA và thờ phụng Ngài.
9Rồi ông tiếp tục đi đến vùng Nê-ghép.
Áp-ram đi xuống Ai-cập
10Lúc ấy trong xứ có cơn đói kém, nên Áp-ram đi xuống Ai-cập để sống, vì trong xứ không đủ lương thực.
11Trước khi đến Ai-cập ông bảo Sa-rai vợ mình, “Anh biết em là người đàn bà đẹp.
12Khi người Ai-cập thấy em họ sẽ bảo, ‘Cô nầy là vợ hắn.’ Họ sẽ giết anh và để em sống.
13Nên em hãy bảo họ rằng em là em của anh, để họ biệt đãi anh, nhờ đó mạng sống anh được bảo toàn.”
14Khi Áp-ram đến Ai-cập, người Ai-cập thấy Sa-rai rất đẹp.
15Các quan chức Ai-cập thấy bà và trầm trồ với vua Ai-cập về nhan sắc Sa-rai. Họ đưa bà vào cung vua,
16nhà vua đối xử rất tốt với Áp-ram, vì tưởng Áp-ram là anh Sa-rai. Vua cấp cho Áp-ram chiên, gia súc, lừa đực, lừa cái, tôi trai tớ gái và lạc đà rất nhiều.
17Nhưng CHÚA giáng bệnh tật khủng khiếp trên vua và những gia nhân vì chuyện Sa-rai, vợ của Áp-ram.
18Nên vua liền mời Áp-ram lại hỏi, “Anh làm gì cho ta vậy? Tại sao không nói thẳng với ta rằng Sa-rai là vợ anh?
19Tại sao anh bảo, ‘Cô ta là em gái tôi’ để đến nỗi ta đã lấy nàng làm vợ? Bây giờ vợ anh đây. Nhận lại rồi đi đi!”
20Rồi vua truyền cho thuộc cấp đưa Áp-ram ra khỏi Ai-cập. Vậy Áp-ram và vợ mình mang theo các tài sản đi ra khỏi xứ.
