Promises to Abram
1Now the ⚓Lord had said to Abram:
“Get ⚓out of your country,
From your family
And from your father’s house,
To a land that I will show you.
2⚓I will make you a great nation;
⚓I will bless you
And make your name great;
⚓And you shall be a blessing.
3⚓I will bless those who bless you,
And I will curse him who curses you;
And in ⚓you all the families of the earth shall be ⚓blessed.”
4So Abram departed as the Lord had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.
5Then Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother’s son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and ⚓the people whom they had acquired in ⚓Haran, and they ⚓departed to go to the land of Canaan. So they came to the land of Canaan.
6Abram ⚓passed through the land to the place of Shechem, ⚓as far as the terebinth tree of Moreh. ⚓And the Canaanites were then in the land.
7⚓Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, ⚓“To your descendants I will give this land.” And there he built an ⚓altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him.
8And he moved from there to the mountain east of Bethel, and he pitched his tent with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; there he built an altar to the Lord and ⚓called on the name of the Lord.
9So Abram journeyed, ⚓going on still toward the South.
Abram in Egypt
10Now there was ⚓a famine in the land, and Abram ⚓went down to Egypt to dwell there, for the famine was⚓severe in the land.
11And it came to pass, when he was close to entering Egypt, that he said to Sarai his wife, “Indeed I know that you are⚓a woman of beautiful countenance.
12Therefore it will happen, when the Egyptians see you, that they will say, ‘This is his wife’; and they ⚓will kill me, but they will let you live.
13⚓Please say you are my ⚓sister, that it may be well with me for your sake, and that I may live because of you.”
14So it was, when Abram came into Egypt, that the Egyptians saw the woman, that she was very beautiful.
15The princes of Pharaoh also saw her and commended her to Pharaoh. And the woman was taken to Pharaoh’s house.
16He ⚓treated Abram well for her sake. He ⚓had sheep, oxen, male donkeys, male and female servants, female donkeys, and camels.
17But the Lord⚓plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife.
18And Pharaoh called Abram and said, ⚓“What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife?
19Why did you say, ‘She is my sister’? I might have taken her as my wife. Now therefore, here is your wife; take her and go your way.”
20⚓So Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him; and they sent him away, with his wife and all that he had.

Áp-ram được Chúa chọn
1Đức Giê-hô-va phán với Áp-ram: “Hãy ra khỏi quê hương, bà con thân tộc và nhà cha của con để đi đến vùng đất Ta sẽ chỉ cho con.⚓
2Ta sẽ làm cho con thành một dân lớn,
Ta sẽ ban phước cho con,
Làm rạng rỡ danh con,
Và con sẽ thành một nguồn phước.
3Ta sẽ ban phước cho người nào chúc phước con,⚓
Nguyền rủa kẻ nào nguyền rủa con;
Mọi dân trên đất
Sẽ nhờ con mà được phước.”⚓
Áp-ram đến Ca-na-an
4Áp-ram ra đi theo lời Đức Giê-hô-va đã phán bảo; Lót cùng đi với ông. Áp-ram được bảy mươi lăm tuổi khi rời Cha-ran.
5Áp-ram đưa Sa-rai, vợ mình, Lót, cháu mình, tất cả tài sản dành dụm được, và các gia nhân đã có tại Cha-ran, đến xứ Ca-na-an. Sau khi đến xứ Ca-na-an,
6Áp-ram đi khắp xứ, đến chỗ cây sồi của Mô-rê tại Si-chem. Lúc đó, dân Ca-na-an đang còn ở trong xứ.
7Đức Giê-hô-va hiện ra với Áp-ram và phán: “Ta sẽ ban xứ nầy cho dòng dõi con.” Tại đây, Áp-ram lập một bàn thờ cho Đức Giê-hô-va, là Đấng đã hiện ra với ông.⚓
8Từ đó, ông di chuyển đến vùng đồi núi phía đông Bê-tên, rồi đóng trại giữa Bê-tên ở phía tây, và A-hi ở phía đông. Ông cũng lập tại đó một bàn thờ cho Đức Giê-hô-va và cầu khẩn danh Ngài.
9Rồi Áp-ram tiếp tục di chuyển dần xuống vùng Nê-ghép.⚓
Áp-ram xuống Ai Cập
10Bấy giờ có một nạn đói xảy ra trong xứ. Áp-ram xuống Ai Cập tạm cư, vì nạn đói rất nghiêm trọng.
11Khi sắp vào Ai Cập, Áp-ram bảo Sa-rai, vợ mình: “Anh biết em là một phụ nữ xinh đẹp.
12Khi người Ai Cập thấy em, họ sẽ nói: ‘Đó là vợ hắn’; rồi họ sẽ giết anh, nhưng để em sống.
13Vậy, em hãy xưng là em gái anh, để vì em mà anh được đối xử tốt, và nhờ em mà mạng sống anh được an toàn.”⚓
14Khi Áp-ram vào Ai Cập, người Ai Cập thấy người phụ nữ nầy rất xinh đẹp.
15Các quan chức của Pha-ra-ôn thấy nàng thì trầm trồ trước mặt vua, và người phụ nữ nầy bị triệu vào cung Pha-ra-ôn.
16Nhờ nàng mà Pha-ra-ôn hậu đãi Áp-ram, và Áp-ram được nhiều chiên, bò, lừa đực, lừa cái, lạc đà, tôi trai và tớ gái.
17Nhưng cũng vì Sa-rai, vợ Áp-ram, Đức Giê-hô-va đã giáng trên Pha-ra-ôn và cả hoàng gia những tai ương nặng nề.
18Pha-ra-ôn đòi Áp-ram đến và hỏi: “Ngươi đã làm gì cho ta vậy? Sao không cho ta biết nàng là vợ ngươi?
19Tại sao ngươi nói: ‘Nàng là em gái tôi’ khiến ta đã lấy nàng làm vợ? Bây giờ, vợ ngươi đây, hãy nhận lại và đi đi.”
20Pha-ra-ôn truyền lệnh cho thuộc hạ đưa Áp-ram và vợ ra đi cùng với tất cả tài sản ông có.
