Abraham’s Faith Confirmed

¹Now it came to pass after these things that ⚓God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!”
And he said, “Here I am.”
²Then He said, “Take now your son, ⚓your only son Isaac, whom you ⚓love, and go ⚓to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a ⚓burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”
³So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and he split the wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. ⁴Then on the third day Abraham lifted his eyes and saw the place afar off. ⁵And Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; the lad and I will go yonder and worship, and we will ⚓come back to you.”
⁶So Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and ⚓laid it on Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife, and the two of them went together. ⁷But Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, “My father!”
And he said, “Here I am, my son.”
Then he said, “Look, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?”
⁸And Abraham said, “My son, God will provide for Himself the ⚓lamb for a ⚓burnt offering.” So the two of them went together.
⁹Then they came to the place of which God had told him. And Abraham built an altar there and placed the wood in order; and he bound Isaac his son and ⚓laid him on the altar, upon the wood. ¹⁰And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.
¹¹But the ⚓Angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!”
So he said, “Here I am.”
¹²And He said, ⚓“Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for ⚓now I know that you fear God, since you have not ⚓withheld your son, your only son, from Me.”
¹³Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son. ¹⁴And Abraham called the name of the place, The-Lord-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, “In the Mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”
¹⁵Then the Angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time out of heaven, ¹⁶and said: ⚓“By Myself I have sworn, says the Lord, because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son— ¹⁷blessing I will ⚓bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants ⚓as the stars of the heaven ⚓and as the sand which is on the seashore; and ⚓your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies. ¹⁸⚓In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, ⚓because you have obeyed My voice.” ¹⁹So Abraham returned to his young men, and they rose and went together to ⚓Beersheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beersheba.

The Family of Nahor

²⁰Now it came to pass after these things that it was told Abraham, saying, “Indeed ⚓Milcah also has borne children to your brother Nahor: ²¹⚓Huz his firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel the father ⚓of Aram, ²²Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel.” ²³And ⚓Bethuel begot Rebekah. These eight Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham’s brother. ²⁴His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also bore Tebah, Gaham, Thahash, and Maachah.

Thượng Đế thử Áp-ra-ham

¹Sau các việc ấy, Thượng Đế thử đức tin của Áp-ra-ham. Thượng Đế gọi Áp-ra-ham, “Áp-ra-ham!” Ông thưa, “Dạ.”
²Thượng Đế bảo, “Con hãy bắt đứa con trai một của con là Y-sác, đứa con mà con rất thương yêu, đi đến xứ Mô-ri-a. Hãy dâng nó làm của lễ toàn thiêu trên một hòn núi mà ta sẽ chỉ cho.”
³Sáng hôm sau Áp-ra-ham dậy sớm và chuẩn bị yên cương cho lừa. Ông mang Y-sác và hai đứa đầy tớ nữa cùng đi. Sau khi đốn củi để làm của lễ thiêu thì họ lên đường, đi đến nơi Thượng Đế chỉ định. ⁴Đến ngày thứ ba, Áp-ra-ham ngước mắt lên thấy địa điểm đó từ đàng xa. ⁵Ông bảo mấy đứa đầy tớ, “Mấy chú ở đây với con lừa. Con trai ta và ta sẽ đi đến đàng kia thờ phụng rồi sẽ trở lại với các chú.”
⁶Áp-ra-ham chất củi để làm của lễ thiêu lên cho Y-sác vác, còn mình thì cầm dao và lửa. Hai cha con cùng đi.
⁷Y-sác gọi Áp-ra-ham cha mình, “Cha ơi!”
Áp-ra-ham đáp, “Cha đây, con!”
Y-sác hỏi, “Thưa cha, mình có lửa và củi đây, nhưng chiên con đâu mà làm của lễ thiêu?”
⁸Áp-ra-ham đáp, “Con ơi, Thượng Đế sẽ chuẩn bị chiên con để chúng ta làm của lễ thiêu.” Hai cha con lại tiếp tục đi. ⁹Đến nơi Thượng Đế chỉ định, Áp-ra-ham dựng một bàn thờ tại đó. Xong ông đặt củi lên rồi trói con mình là Y-sác đặt nằm lên đống củi trên bàn thờ. ¹⁰Xong Áp-ra-ham giơ dao định giết con mình.
¹¹Nhưng thiên sứ của CHÚA từ trời kêu xuống, “Áp-ra-ham! Áp-ra-ham!”
Áp-ra-ham đáp, “Thưa, con đây!”
¹²Thiên sứ bảo, “Đừng đụng đến con của con! Bây giờ ta biết con thật kính sợ Thượng Đế. Con đã không tiếc con trai, tức con một mình, đối với ta.”
¹³Áp-ra-ham ngước lên thấy một con chiên đực đang mắc kẹt sừng trong bụi cây, nên Áp-ra-ham bắt giết nó. Ông dâng nó lên làm của lễ thiêu cho Thượng Đế, thế cho con mình. ¹⁴Vì vậy, Áp-ra-ham gọi chỗ đó là Nơi CHÚA Cung Ứng⚓. Đến ngày nay người ta vẫn nói “Trên hòn núi của CHÚA mà mọi việc sẽ được cung ứng.”⚓
¹⁵Thiên sứ của CHÚA từ trời gọi Áp-ra-ham một lần nữa ¹⁶rằng, “CHÚA phán, ‘Vì đối với ta, con đã không tiếc con trai, tức con một của con, nên nhân danh chính mình, ta hứa như sau: ¹⁷Ta chắc chắn sẽ ban phước và cho con vô số con cháu. Chúng nó sẽ đông như sao trên trời, như cát bãi biển. Chúng sẽ chiếm đoạt thành trì của quân thù. ¹⁸Nhờ con cháu con mà nhiều dân tộc trên đất sẽ được phước, vì con vâng lời ta.’”
¹⁹Sau đó Áp-ra-ham trở lại nơi các đầy tớ đang chờ. Họ trở về Bê-e-sê-ba, rồi Áp-ra-ham cư ngụ tại đó.
²⁰Sau các việc ấy có người báo tin cho Áp-ra-ham, “Na-ho, anh ông, và bà vợ là Minh-ca hiện đã có con. ²¹Con trưởng là U-xơ, con thứ nhì là Bu-xơ. Con thứ ba là Kê-mu-ên (cha của A-ram). ²²Rồi họ có thêm Kê-sết, Hát-so, Phinh-đát, Dít-láp và Bê-thu-ên.” ²³Bê-thu-ên sinh Rê-be-ca. Minh-ca là mẹ của tám người con trai còn Na-ho, em của Áp-ra-ham là cha các người ấy. ²⁴Na-ho cũng có bốn con trai qua người vợ lẽ là Rêu-ma. Tên bốn người đó là Thê-ba, Ga-ham, Ta-hát và Ma-a-ca.
