Cain Murders Abel

¹Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, and said, “I have acquired a man from the Lord.” ²Then she bore again, this time his brother Abel. Now ⚓Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. ³And in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit ⚓of the ground to the Lord. ⁴Abel also brought of ⚓the firstborn of his flock and of ⚓their fat. And the Lord respected ⚓Abel and his offering, ⁵but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.
⁶So the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? ⁷If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.”
⁸Now Cain talked with Abel his brother; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and ⚓killed him.
⁹Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?”
He said, ⚓“I do not know. Am I ⚓my brother’s keeper?”
¹⁰And He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood ⚓cries out to Me from the ground. ¹¹So now ⚓you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. ¹²When you till the ground, it shall no longer yield its strength to you. A fugitive and a vagabond you shall be on the earth.”
¹³And Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is greater than I can bear! ¹⁴Surely You have driven me out this day from the face of the ground; ⚓I shall be ⚓hidden from Your face; I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond on the earth, and it will happen that⚓anyone who finds me will kill me.”
¹⁵And the Lord said to him, “Therefore, whoever kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him ⚓sevenfold.” And the Lord set a ⚓mark on Cain, lest anyone finding him should kill him.

The Family of Cain

¹⁶Then Cain ⚓went out from the ⚓presence of the Lord and dwelt in the land of Nod on the east of Eden. ¹⁷And Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Ē´noch. And he built a city, ⚓and called the name of the city after the name of his son—Ē´noch. ¹⁸To Ē´noch was born Irad; and Irad begot Mehujael, and Mehujael begot Methushael, and Methushael begot Lamech.
¹⁹Then Lamech took for himself ⚓two wives: the name of one was Adah, and the name of the second was Zillah. ²⁰And Adah bore Jabal. He was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock. ²¹His brother’s name was Jubal. He was the father of all those who play the harp and flute. ²²And as for Zillah, she also bore Tubal-Cain, an instructor of every craftsman in bronze and iron. And the sister of Tubal-Cain was Naamah.
²³Then Lamech said to his wives:
“Adah and Zillah, hear my voice;
Wives of Lamech, listen to my speech!
For I have killed a man for wounding me,
Even a young man for hurting me.
²⁴⚓If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold,
Then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.”

A New Son

²⁵And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and ⚓named him Seth, “For God has appointed another seed for me instead of Abel, whom Cain killed.” ²⁶And as for Seth, ⚓to him also a son was born; and he named him Ē´nosh. Then men began ⚓to call on the name of the Lord.

Ca-in và A-bên

¹A-đam ăn ở với Ê-va, vợ mình. Bà thụ thai và sinh Ca-in. Bà nói: “Nhờ Đức Giê-hô-va giúp đỡ, tôi đã sinh⚓ được một người.” ²Bà lại sinh A-bên, em Ca-in. A-bên chăn chiên, còn Ca-in làm ruộng.
³Sau một thời gian, Ca-in dùng thổ sản làm lễ vật dâng lên Đức Giê-hô-va. ⁴Còn A-bên dâng phần ngon nhất của chiên đầu lòng trong bầy mình. Đức Giê-hô-va đoái đến A-bên và lễ vật của ông,⚓ ⁵nhưng Ngài không đoái đến Ca-in và lễ vật của ông. Vì thế, Ca-in giận lắm và sa sầm nét mặt. ⁶Đức Giê-hô-va hỏi Ca-in: “Tại sao con giận? Sao con sa sầm nét mặt? ⁷Nếu con làm điều tốt thì lẽ nào con không được chấp nhận?⚓ Còn nếu con không làm điều tốt thì tội lỗi rình rập trước cửa, nó thèm con lắm; nhưng con phải quản trị nó.”
⁸Ca-in nói chuyện với A-bên, em mình.⚓ Khi hai người đang ở ngoài đồng thì Ca-in xông đến A-bên và giết đi.⚓ ⁹Đức Giê-hô-va hỏi Ca-in: “A-bên, em con ở đâu?” Ca-in thưa: “Con không biết. Con là người giữ em con sao?” ¹⁰Đức Giê-hô-va hỏi: “Con đã làm điều gì vậy? Tiếng của máu em con từ dưới đất đã kêu thấu đến Ta.⚓ ¹¹Bây giờ, con bị nguyền rủa phải rời khỏi mảnh đất nầy, là đất đã hả miệng hút máu em con đổ ra bởi tay con. ¹²Khi con canh tác, đất sẽ chẳng sinh hoa lợi cho con nữa. Con sẽ lẩn trốn và phiêu bạt trên đất.” ¹³Ca-in thưa với Đức Giê-hô-va: “Hình phạt nầy quá sức chịu đựng của con. ¹⁴Nầy, ngày nay Chúa đuổi con ra khỏi đất nầy, con sẽ bị che khuất khỏi mặt Chúa và lẩn trốn, phiêu bạt trên đất; và rồi, có ai đó gặp con, họ sẽ giết con.” ¹⁵Đức Giê-hô-va phán: “Không đâu! Nhưng nếu ai giết Ca-in, người ấy sẽ bị báo thù gấp bảy lần.” Đức Giê-hô-va đánh dấu trên người Ca-in để ai gặp Ca-in thì không giết. ¹⁶Ca-in lui ra khỏi sự hiện diện của Đức Giê-hô-va và ở trong đất Nốt,⚓ về phía đông của Ê-đen.

Dòng dõi của Ca-in

¹⁷Ca-in ăn ở với vợ, nàng thụ thai và sinh Hê-nóc. Ca-in xây một cái thành và đặt tên là Hê-nóc, theo tên con trai mình. ¹⁸Hê-nóc sinh Y-rát; Y-rát sinh Mê-hu-da-ên; Mê-hu-da-ên sinh Mê-tu-sa-ên; Mê-tu-sa-ên sinh Lê-méc. ¹⁹Lê-méc cưới hai vợ; một người tên là A-đa, một người tên là Si-la. ²⁰A-đa sinh Gia-banh; Gia-banh là tổ phụ của các dân sống trong lều trại và nuôi gia súc. ²¹Em của Gia-banh là Giu-banh, tổ phụ của những người chơi thụ cầm và thổi sáo. ²²Còn Si-la sinh Tu-banh Ca-in, là người rèn đủ các loại dụng cụ bén⚓ bằng đồng và sắt. Em gái của Tu-banh Ca-in là Na-a-ma.
²³Lê-méc nói với hai vợ mình:
“Hỡi A-đa và Si-la! Hãy nghe tiếng ta;
Nầy, các người vợ Lê-méc, hãy lắng tai nghe ta nói:
Ta đã giết một người vì gây thương tích cho ta,
Và một đứa trẻ vì đánh ta sưng bầm.
²⁴Nếu Ca-in được báo thù bảy lần,⚓
Thì Lê-méc sẽ được báo oán bảy mươi bảy lần.”

Sết ra đời

²⁵A-đam lại ăn ở với vợ, bà sinh được một trai, đặt tên là Sết,⚓ vì bà nói: “Đức Chúa Trời đã cho tôi một đứa con khác thay cho A-bên đã bị Ca-in giết.” ²⁶Sết cũng sinh được một trai, đặt tên là Ê-nót. Từ đó, người ta bắt đầu cầu khẩn danh Đức Giê-hô-va.
