Chiến công lớn của Giô-na-than

¹Một hôm, Giô-na-than, con của Sau-lơ, bảo người thanh niên vác khí giới cho ông rằng: “Nào, chúng ta hãy đi qua đồn quân Phi-li-tin đóng ở phía bên kia.” Nhưng ông không nói cho cha mình biết. ²Bấy giờ, Sau-lơ đang đóng quân ở ngoại ô Ghi-bê-a, dưới cây lựu ở Mi-gơ-rôn, và đoàn quân theo ông khoảng sáu trăm người. ³Có A-hi-gia, con A-hi-túp (A-hi-túp là anh của Y-ca-bốt, con Phi-nê-a, cháu Hê-li, thầy tế lễ của Đức Giê-hô-va tại Si-lô), lúc ấy mang ê-phót. Không ai biết Giô-na-than đã đi. ⁴Trên quãng đường đèo mà Giô-na-than tìm cách vượt qua để đến đồn quân Phi-li-tin có hai đỉnh núi đá, đỉnh ở bên nầy gọi là Bốt-sết và đỉnh bên kia gọi là Sê-nê. ⁵Đỉnh núi đá phía bắc nằm đối diện Mích-ma, còn đỉnh phía nam nằm đối diện Ghê-ba.
⁶Giô-na-than nói với người vác khí giới cho ông: “Nào, chúng ta hãy tiến sang đồn của những kẻ chẳng chịu cắt bì kia. Có lẽ Đức Giê-hô-va sẽ hành động vì chúng ta. Dù ít người hay nhiều người, không có gì cản trở Đức Giê-hô-va cho chúng ta chiến thắng.” ⁷Người vác khí giới cho ông thưa: “Xin cứ làm mọi điều ông ước muốn, tôi xin một lòng một dạ với ông.” ⁸Giô-na-than tiếp: “Nầy, chúng ta hãy đi đến chỗ những người ấy và để cho chúng thấy chúng ta. ⁹Nếu chúng nói: ‘Hãy đợi chúng tao đến chỗ chúng mầy,’ thì chúng ta sẽ đứng tại chỗ và không lên cùng chúng. ¹⁰Còn nếu chúng nói: ‘Hãy lên đây,’ thì chúng ta sẽ lên, vì đó là dấu hiệu Đức Giê-hô-va đã phó chúng vào tay chúng ta.”
¹¹Vậy, hai người xuất hiện trước đồn Phi-li-tin. Người Phi-li-tin nói: “Kìa, bọn Hê-bơ-rơ đang chui ra khỏi các hang chúng ẩn trốn.” ¹²Những người trong đồn gọi Giô-na-than và người vác khí giới của ông: “Hãy lên đây! Chúng tao có việc muốn nói với chúng mầy.”⚓ Giô-na-than nói với người vác khí giới: “Hãy theo ta, vì Đức Giê-hô-va đã phó chúng vào tay Y-sơ-ra-ên.” ¹³Giô-na-than leo lên bằng cả tay chân, và người vác khí giới leo theo. Bọn Phi-li-tin ngã gục trước mặt Giô-na-than, và người vác khí giới theo sau ông giết chúng. ¹⁴Trong trận thứ nhất nầy, Giô-na-than và người vác khí giới của ông giết khoảng hai mươi người trên một bãi đất rộng chừng nửa mẫu. ¹⁵Nỗi kinh hoàng lan ra trong trại quân, ngoài đồng, và trong toàn dân. Quân trong đồn cũng như đội quân đột kích đều khiếp đảm, đất thì rúng động. Đó là nỗi kinh khiếp mà Đức Chúa Trời giáng xuống.
¹⁶Lính canh của Sau-lơ ở tại Ghi-bê-a thuộc Bên-gia-min đều nhìn thấy quân Phi-li-tin hoảng loạn và chạy tan tác. ¹⁷Bấy giờ, Sau-lơ nói với quân lính ở với mình: “Hãy điểm lại xem ai là người đã bỏ hàng ngũ chúng ta.” Họ điểm lại và thấy thiếu Giô-na-than và người vác khí giới của ông. ¹⁸Sau-lơ nói với A-hi-gia: “Hãy đem Hòm Giao Ước của Đức Chúa Trời đến đây.” (Vì lúc bấy giờ, Hòm Giao Ước của Đức Chúa Trời đang ở với dân Y-sơ-ra-ên.) ¹⁹Nhưng trong khi Sau-lơ nói với thầy tế lễ, thì cảnh hỗn loạn trong trại quân Phi-li-tin càng lúc càng tăng. Sau-lơ nói với thầy tế lễ: “Hãy ngừng tay!” ²⁰Rồi Sau-lơ cùng tất cả quân lính ông tập hợp lại và ra trận. Kìa, họ thấy người Phi-li-tin cực kỳ hoảng loạn, rút gươm chém giết lẫn nhau. ²¹Những người Hê-bơ-rơ trước đó đã theo người Phi-li-tin, lên trại quân với chúng thì nay quay về với người Y-sơ-ra-ên theo Sau-lơ và Giô-na-than. ²²Tất cả những người Y-sơ-ra-ên đang ẩn trốn trong vùng đồi núi Ép-ra-im nghe tin người Phi-li-tin vỡ chạy, cũng rượt theo đánh đuổi chúng. ²³Hôm ấy, Đức Giê-hô-va đã giải cứu Y-sơ-ra-ên; và chiến trận vượt khỏi Bết A-ven.

Lời thề thiếu suy nghĩ của Sau-lơ

²⁴Cũng trong ngày ấy, người Y-sơ-ra-ên bị kiệt sức vì Sau-lơ có thề với dân chúng rằng: “Đáng nguyền rủa kẻ nào ăn vật gì trước chiều tối, tức trước khi ta báo thù xong những cừu địch của ta!” Vì vậy, toàn dân không ai dám ăn uống gì cả. ²⁵Rồi họ đến một khu rừng có mật ong trên đất. ²⁶Lúc ấy, dân chúng đi vào trong rừng, thấy mật đang chảy, nhưng không ai dám chấm tay cho vào miệng, vì sợ lời thề. ²⁷Còn Giô-na-than vì không biết lời thề mà cha mình đã lập với dân chúng, nên đưa đầu gậy mình đang cầm trong tay chấm vào tàng mật ong, rồi chấm tay cho vào miệng, thì mắt ông liền sáng ra. ²⁸Có người trong dân chúng nói cho ông biết: “Cha của ông đã thề với dân chúng rằng: ‘Đáng nguyền rủa kẻ nào ăn vật gì hôm nay.’ Vì vậy, dân chúng đều bị kiệt sức.” ²⁹Giô-na-than nói: “Cha tôi đã làm cho xứ sở bối rối thêm. Hãy xem, nhờ nếm chút mật nầy mà mắt tôi đã sáng dường nào! ³⁰Ồ! Nếu như hôm nay dân chúng đã được ăn những vật thực chiếm được của kẻ thù thì người Phi-li-tin càng thất trận nặng nề hơn biết bao!”
³¹Hôm ấy, người Y-sơ-ra-ên đánh bại người Phi-li-tin từ Mích-ma cho đến A-gia-lôn. ³²Dân chúng rất đói mệt nên họ xông vào lấy chiến lợi phẩm, bắt chiên, bò, và bê, giết chúng trên đất, rồi ăn thịt còn máu. ³³Có người báo với Sau-lơ: “Kìa, dân chúng phạm tội với Đức Giê-hô-va mà ăn thịt còn máu.”⚓ Ông nói: “Các ngươi thật phản phúc! Hãy lập tức lăn một tảng đá lớn đến đây cho ta.” ³⁴Sau-lơ nói tiếp: “Hãy chia nhau đến với dân chúng, rao rằng mỗi người phải đem chiên và bò đến cho ta, rồi giết tại đây và ăn thịt nó. Đừng phạm tội với Đức Giê-hô-va mà ăn thịt còn máu.” Vậy trong đêm đó, mỗi người dân đều đem súc vật mình có trong tay đến và giết chúng trên tảng đá. ³⁵Sau-lơ lập một bàn thờ cho Đức Giê-hô-va. Đó là bàn thờ thứ nhất mà ông lập cho Đức Giê-hô-va.

Giô-na-than đối diện sự chết

³⁶Sau việc ấy, Sau-lơ nói: “Chúng ta hãy đi xuống đuổi theo người Phi-li-tin suốt đêm nay, cướp phá chúng cho đến sáng sớm, và đừng để một ai sống sót.” Họ đáp: “Xin cứ làm mọi điều bệ hạ cho là phải.” Nhưng thầy tế lễ nói: “Chúng ta hãy cầu hỏi Đức Chúa Trời, ngay tại đây.” ³⁷Sau-lơ cầu hỏi Đức Chúa Trời: “Con có nên đi xuống và đuổi theo người Phi-li-tin không? Ngài sẽ phó chúng vào tay Y-sơ-ra-ên không?” Nhưng ngày hôm ấy, Đức Chúa Trời không trả lời ông. ³⁸Vì thế, Sau-lơ ra lệnh: “Tất cả các vị chỉ huy quân đội hãy đến đây, để tìm xem hôm nay ai đã phạm tội. ³⁹Thật như Đức Giê-hô-va hằng sống, là Đấng giải cứu Y-sơ-ra-ên, kẻ đã phạm tội dù chính là Giô-na-than, con trai ta, chắc chắn cũng phải chết!” Không một ai trong dân chúng đáp lời vua. ⁴⁰Vua nói với toàn thể Y-sơ-ra-ên: “Các ngươi hãy đứng bên nầy, ta và Giô-na-than, con trai ta, sẽ đứng bên kia.” Dân chúng thưa với vua Sau-lơ: “Xin cứ làm điều bệ hạ cho là phải.” ⁴¹Sau-lơ thưa với Đức Giê-hô-va: “Ôi, Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên! Xin phơi bày sự thật.” Giô-na-than và Sau-lơ bị chỉ ra, còn dân chúng thì vô can.⚓ ⁴²Sau-lơ nói: “Hãy bắt thăm giữa ta và Giô-na-than, con ta.” Giô-na-than bị chỉ ra.
⁴³Sau-lơ nói với Giô-na-than: “Hãy nói cho ta biết con đã làm gì.” Giô-na-than thú thật: “Con có dùng đầu gậy cầm trong tay mà nếm chút mật ong. Nầy, con đây phải chết.” ⁴⁴Sau-lơ nói: “Hỡi Giô-na-than, nếu con không chết, nguyện Đức Chúa Trời giáng họa cho ta thật nặng nề!” ⁴⁵Nhưng dân chúng nói với Sau-lơ: “Giô-na-than là người đã làm cho Y-sơ-ra-ên chiến thắng vẻ vang như thế mà phải chết sao? Nhất định không! Thật như Đức Giê-hô-va hằng sống, dù một sợi tóc trên đầu người cũng sẽ không rụng xuống đất, vì hôm nay người đã cùng làm việc với Đức Chúa Trời.” Thế là, dân chúng đã giải cứu Giô-na-than, và ông không phải chết. ⁴⁶Sau-lơ không truy đuổi người Phi-li-tin nữa; còn người Phi-li-tin thì rút về xứ mình.

Sau-lơ tiếp tục cuộc chiến

⁴⁷Khi đã nắm được vương quyền trên Y-sơ-ra-ên, Sau-lơ giao chiến với tất cả các kẻ thù chung quanh, như Mô-áp, Am-môn, Ê-đôm, các vua Xô-ba, và người Phi-li-tin. Ông đánh đâu thắng đó. ⁴⁸Ông hành động can trường, đánh bại người A-ma-léc và giải cứu Y-sơ-ra-ên khỏi tay những kẻ cướp phá họ.
⁴⁹Sau-lơ có các con trai là Giô-na-than, Gi-sê-vi, và Manh-ki-sua; ông cũng có hai con gái: cô lớn tên là Mê-ráp, cô nhỏ tên là Mi-canh. ⁵⁰Vợ của Sau-lơ là A-hi-nô-am, con gái của A-hi-mát. Tổng tư lệnh quân đội của Sau-lơ là Áp-ne, con của Nê-rơ (Nê-rơ là chú của Sau-lơ). ⁵¹Kích, cha của Sau-lơ; còn Nê-rơ, cha của Áp-ne, đều là con của A-bi-ên.
⁵²Suốt đời Sau-lơ luôn có chiến tranh khốc liệt với người Phi-li-tin. Mỗi khi thấy người nào mạnh mẽ và gan dạ thì Sau-lơ chiêu mộ cho mình.

Jonathan Attacks the Philistines

¹One day Jonathan son of Saul said to his young armor-bearer, “Come, let’s go over to the Philistine outpost on the other side.” But he did not tell his father.
²Saul was staying on the outskirts of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree in Migron. With him were about six hundred men, ³among whom was Ahijah, who was wearing an ephod. He was a son of Ichabod’s brother Ahitub son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the Lord’s priest in Shiloh. No one was aware that Jonathan had left.
⁴On each side of the pass that Jonathan intended to cross to reach the Philistine outpost was a cliff; one was called Bozez and the other Seneh. ⁵One cliff stood to the north toward Mikmash, the other to the south toward Geba.
⁶Jonathan said to his young armor-bearer, “Come, let’s go over to the outpost of those uncircumcised men. Perhaps the Lord will act in our behalf. Nothing can hinder the Lord from saving, whether by many or by few.”
⁷“Do all that you have in mind,” his armor-bearer said. “Go ahead; I am with you heart and soul.”
⁸Jonathan said, “Come on, then; we will cross over toward them and let them see us. ⁹If they say to us, ‘Wait there until we come to you,’ we will stay where we are and not go up to them. ¹⁰But if they say, ‘Come up to us,’ we will climb up, because that will be our sign that the Lord has given them into our hands.”
¹¹So both of them showed themselves to the Philistine outpost. “Look!” said the Philistines. “The Hebrews are crawling out of the holes they were hiding in.” ¹²The men of the outpost shouted to Jonathan and his armor-bearer, “Come up to us and we’ll teach you a lesson.”
So Jonathan said to his armor-bearer, “Climb up after me; the Lord has given them into the hand of Israel.”
¹³Jonathan climbed up, using his hands and feet, with his armor-bearer right behind him. The Philistines fell before Jonathan, and his armor-bearer followed and killed behind him. ¹⁴In that first attack Jonathan and his armor-bearer killed some twenty men in an area of about half an acre.

Israel Routs the Philistines

¹⁵Then panic struck the whole army—those in the camp and field, and those in the outposts and raiding parties—and the ground shook. It was a panic sent by God.⚓
¹⁶Saul’s lookouts at Gibeah in Benjamin saw the army melting away in all directions. ¹⁷Then Saul said to the men who were with him, “Muster the forces and see who has left us.” When they did, it was Jonathan and his armor-bearer who were not there.
¹⁸Saul said to Ahijah, “Bring the ark of God.” (At that time it was with the Israelites.)⚓ ¹⁹While Saul was talking to the priest, the tumult in the Philistine camp increased more and more. So Saul said to the priest, “Withdraw your hand.”
²⁰Then Saul and all his men assembled and went to the battle. They found the Philistines in total confusion, striking each other with their swords. ²¹Those Hebrews who had previously been with the Philistines and had gone up with them to their camp went over to the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan. ²²When all the Israelites who had hidden in the hill country of Ephraim heard that the Philistines were on the run, they joined the battle in hot pursuit. ²³So on that day the Lord saved Israel, and the battle moved on beyond Beth Aven.

Jonathan Eats Honey

²⁴Now the Israelites were in distress that day, because Saul had bound the people under an oath, saying, “Cursed be anyone who eats food before evening comes, before I have avenged myself on my enemies!” So none of the troops tasted food.
²⁵The entire army entered the woods, and there was honey on the ground. ²⁶When they went into the woods, they saw the honey oozing out; yet no one put his hand to his mouth, because they feared the oath. ²⁷But Jonathan had not heard that his father had bound the people with the oath, so he reached out the end of the staff that was in his hand and dipped it into the honeycomb. He raised his hand to his mouth, and his eyes brightened.⚓ ²⁸Then one of the soldiers told him, “Your father bound the army under a strict oath, saying, ‘Cursed be anyone who eats food today!’ That is why the men are faint.”
²⁹Jonathan said, “My father has made trouble for the country. See how my eyes brightened when I tasted a little of this honey. ³⁰How much better it would have been if the men had eaten today some of the plunder they took from their enemies. Would not the slaughter of the Philistines have been even greater?”
³¹That day, after the Israelites had struck down the Philistines from Mikmash to Aijalon, they were exhausted. ³²They pounced on the plunder and, taking sheep, cattle and calves, they butchered them on the ground and ate them, together with the blood. ³³Then someone said to Saul, “Look, the men are sinning against the Lord by eating meat that has blood in it.”
“You have broken faith,” he said. “Roll a large stone over here at once.” ³⁴Then he said, “Go out among the men and tell them, ‘Each of you bring me your cattle and sheep, and slaughter them here and eat them. Do not sin against the Lord by eating meat with blood still in it.’ ”
So everyone brought his ox that night and slaughtered it there. ³⁵Then Saul built an altar to the Lord; it was the first time he had done this.
³⁶Saul said, “Let us go down and pursue the Philistines by night and plunder them till dawn, and let us not leave one of them alive.”
“Do whatever seems best to you,” they replied.
But the priest said, “Let us inquire of God here.”
³⁷So Saul asked God, “Shall I go down and pursue the Philistines? Will you give them into Israel’s hand?” But God did not answer him that day.
³⁸Saul therefore said, “Come here, all you who are leaders of the army, and let us find out what sin has been committed today. ³⁹As surely as the Lord who rescues Israel lives, even if the guilt lies with my son Jonathan, he must die.” But not one of them said a word.
⁴⁰Saul then said to all the Israelites, “You stand over there; I and Jonathan my son will stand over here.”
“Do what seems best to you,” they replied.
⁴¹Then Saul prayed to the Lord, the God of Israel, “Why have you not answered your servant today? If the fault is in me or my son Jonathan, respond with Urim, but if the men of Israel are at fault,⚓ respond with Thummim.” Jonathan and Saul were taken by lot, and the men were cleared. ⁴²Saul said, “Cast the lot between me and Jonathan my son.” And Jonathan was taken.
⁴³Then Saul said to Jonathan, “Tell me what you have done.”
So Jonathan told him, “I tasted a little honey with the end of my staff. And now I must die!”
⁴⁴Saul said, “May God deal with me, be it ever so severely, if you do not die, Jonathan.”
⁴⁵But the men said to Saul, “Should Jonathan die—he who has brought about this great deliverance in Israel? Never! As surely as the Lord lives, not a hair of his head will fall to the ground, for he did this today with God’s help.” So the men rescued Jonathan, and he was not put to death.
⁴⁶Then Saul stopped pursuing the Philistines, and they withdrew to their own land.
⁴⁷After Saul had assumed rule over Israel, he fought against their enemies on every side: Moab, the Ammonites, Edom, the kings⚓ of Zobah, and the Philistines. Wherever he turned, he inflicted punishment on them.⚓ ⁴⁸He fought valiantly and defeated the Amalekites, delivering Israel from the hands of those who had plundered them.

Saul’s Family

⁴⁹Saul’s sons were Jonathan, Ishvi and Malki-Shua. The name of his older daughter was Merab, and that of the younger was Michal. ⁵⁰His wife’s name was Ahinoam daughter of Ahimaaz. The name of the commander of Saul’s army was Abner son of Ner, and Ner was Saul’s uncle. ⁵¹Saul’s father Kish and Abner’s father Ner were sons of Abiel.
⁵²All the days of Saul there was bitter war with the Philistines, and whenever Saul saw a mighty or brave man, he took him into his service.
