Sam-sôn đánh bại quân Phi-li-tin
1Ít lâu sau, nhằm mùa gặt lúa mì, Sam-sôn đi thăm vợ mình và đem cho nàng một con dê con. Ông nói: “Con muốn đến với vợ của con ở trong phòng.” Nhưng cha nàng không cho phép ông vào.
2Cha nàng nói: “Cha tưởng con ghét nó nên đã gả nó cho bạn con rồi. Em gái nó không xinh hơn nó sao? Vậy, hãy lấy em nó thế cho nó.”
3Sam-sôn nói: “Nếu lần nầy con có làm hại dân Phi-li-tin thì con cũng vô tội.”
4Vậy Sam-sôn đi bắt ba trăm con chồn và cột đuôi chúng thành từng cặp, rồi lấy đuốc gắn giữa hai cái đuôi.
5Ông đốt đuốc và thả những con chồn ấy vào đồng lúa mì chưa gặt của dân Phi-li-tin. Như vậy, ông đốt lúa mì đã bó cũng như lúa mì chưa gặt, và các vườn ô-liu.
6Dân Phi-li-tin hỏi: “Ai đã làm điều đó?” Người ta đáp: “Sam-sôn, con rể của một người ở Thim-na, vì người nầy bắt vợ hắn gả cho một người bạn của hắn.” Vậy dân Phi-li-tin đi lên, thiêu nàng luôn với cha nàng trong lửa.
7Sam-sôn nói: “Nếu các người đã làm như thế thì tôi quyết sẽ trả thù các người rồi mới chịu ngồi yên.”
8Ông tiến đánh chúng dữ dội và giết nhiều người. Sau đó, ông đi xuống và ở trong hang đá Ê-tam.
9Bấy giờ, dân Phi-li-tin đi lên đóng quân ở Giu-đa và tràn đến Lê-chi.
10Người Giu-đa nói với chúng rằng: “Tại sao các người lên đánh chúng tôi?” Chúng đáp: “Chúng tôi lên đây để trói Sam-sôn và sẽ đối xử với hắn như hắn đã đối xử với chúng tôi!”
11Ba nghìn người Giu-đa đi xuống hang đá Ê-tam và nói với Sam-sôn: “Anh không biết dân Phi-li-tin đang thống trị chúng ta sao? Vậy anh đã làm điều gì khiến chúng tôi phải bị liên lụy?” Ông trả lời: “Tôi đã đối xử với chúng như chính chúng đã đối xử với tôi thôi.”
12Họ lại nói: “Chúng tôi xuống đây để trói anh và nộp anh cho dân Phi-li-tin.” Sam-sôn tiếp: “Xin hãy thề với tôi là chính anh em không được giết tôi.”
13Họ trả lời: “Được, chúng tôi chỉ muốn trói anh và nộp vào tay chúng chứ chẳng muốn giết anh đâu.” Vậy, họ trói ông bằng hai sợi dây mới, và dẫn ông ra khỏi hang đá.
14Khi ông đến Lê-chi, dân Phi-li-tin reo hò chạy về phía ông. Thần của Đức Giê-hô-va tác động mạnh trên Sam-sôn, khiến những dây cột rớt khỏi cánh tay ông như chỉ gai bị lửa đốt.
15Thấy một cái xương hàm lừa còn tươi, ông vớ lấy và đánh giết một nghìn người Phi-li-tin.
16Bấy giờ Sam-sôn nói:
“Với một xương hàm lừa,
Giết thây chất thành đống!
Với một xương hàm lừa,
Ta đánh giết cả nghìn tên!”
17Khi nói xong, ông ném xương hàm lừa khỏi tay mình, và đặt tên chỗ đó là Ra-mát Lê-chi.⚓
18Vì khát nước quá, ông cầu khẩn Đức Giê-hô-va rằng: “Chúa đã ban cho đầy tớ Chúa sự giải cứu lớn lao nầy, chẳng lẽ bây giờ con phải chết khát, và sa vào tay những kẻ không chịu cắt bì sao?”
19Đức Chúa Trời chẻ bộng đá ở Lê-chi cho nước phun ra. Khi Sam-sôn uống nước thì tinh thần tươi tỉnh trở lại và được hồi sức. Vì thế, người ta đặt tên suối nầy là Ên Ha-cô-rê⚓ cho đến ngày nay. Suối ấy ở Lê-chi.
20Sam-sôn làm quan xét của dân Y-sơ-ra-ên hai mươi năm trong thời kỳ người Phi-li-tin thống trị Y-sơ-ra-ên.

Samson Defeats the Philistines
1After a while, in the time of wheat harvest, it happened that Samson visited his wife with a ⚓young goat. And he said, “Let me go in to my wife, into her room.” But her father would not permit him to go in.
2Her father said, “I really thought that you thoroughly ⚓hated her; therefore I gave her to your companion. Is not her younger sister better than she? Please, take her instead.”
3And Samson said to them, “This time I shall be blameless regarding the Philistines if I harm them!”
4Then Samson went and caught three hundred foxes; and he took torches, turned the foxes tail to tail, and put a torch between each pair of tails.
5When he had set the torches on fire, he let the foxes go into the standing grain of the Philistines, and burned up both the shocks and the standing grain, as well as the vineyards and olive groves.
6Then the Philistines said, “Who has done this?”
And they answered, “Samson, the son-in-law of the Timnite, because he has taken his wife and given her to his companion.” ⚓So the Philistines came up and burned her and her father with fire.
7Samson said to them, “Since you would do a thing like this, I will surely take revenge on you, and after that I will cease.”
8So he attacked them hip and thigh with a great slaughter; then he went down and dwelt in the cleft of the rock of ⚓Etam.
9Now the Philistines went up, encamped in Judah, and deployed themselves ⚓against Lehi.
10And the men of Judah said, “Why have you come up against us?”
So they answered, “We have come up to arrest Samson, to do to him as he has done to us.”
11Then three thousand men of Judah went down to the cleft of the rock of Etam, and said to Samson, “Do you not know that the Philistines ⚓rule over us? What is this you have done to us?”
And he said to them, “As they did to me, so I have done to them.”
12But they said to him, “We have come down to arrest you, that we may deliver you into the hand of the Philistines.”
Then Samson said to them, “Swear to me that you will not kill me yourselves.”
13So they spoke to him, saying, “No, but we will tie you securely and deliver you into their hand; but we will surely not kill you.” And they bound him with two ⚓new ropes and brought him up from the rock.
14When he came to Lehi, the Philistines came shouting against him. Then ⚓the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him; and the ropes that were on his arms became like flax that is burned with fire, and his bonds broke loose from his hands.
15He found a fresh jawbone of a donkey, reached out his hand and took it, and ⚓killed a thousand men with it.
16Then Samson said:
“With the jawbone of a donkey,
Heaps upon heaps,
With the jawbone of a donkey
I have slain a thousand men!”
17And so it was, when he had finished speaking, that he threw the jawbone from his hand, and called that place Ramath Lehi.
18Then he became very thirsty; so he cried out to the Lord and said, ⚓“You have given this great deliverance by the hand of Your servant; and now shall I die of thirst and fall into the hand of the uncircumcised?”
19So God split the hollow place that is in Lehi, and water came out, and he drank; and ⚓his spirit returned, and he revived. Therefore he called its name En Hakkore, which is in Lehi to this day.
20And ⚓he judged Israel ⚓twenty years ⚓in the days of the Philistines.
