Jephthah
1Now ⚓Jephthah the Gileadite was ⚓a mighty man of valor, but he was the son of a harlot; and Gilead begot Jephthah.
2Gilead’s wife bore sons; and when his wife’s sons grew up, they drove Jephthah out, and said to him, “You shall have ⚓no inheritance in our father’s house, for you are the son of another woman.”
3Then Jephthah fled from his brothers and dwelt in the land of ⚓Tob; and ⚓worthless men banded together with Jephthah and went out raiding with him.
4It came to pass after a time that the ⚓people of Ammon made war against Israel.
5And so it was, when the people of Ammon made war against Israel, that the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob.
6Then they said to Jephthah, “Come and be our commander, that we may fight against the people of Ammon.”
7So Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, ⚓“Did you not hate me, and expel me from my father’s house? Why have you come to me now when you are in distress?”
8⚓And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “That is why we have ⚓turned again to you now, that you may go with us and fight against the people of Ammon, and be ⚓our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.”
9So Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “If you take me back home to fight against the people of Ammon, and the Lord delivers them to me, shall I be your head?”
10And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, ⚓“The Lord will be a witness between us, if we do not do according to your words.”
11Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him ⚓head and commander over them; and Jephthah spoke all his words ⚓before the Lord in Mizpah.
12Now Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the people of Ammon, saying, ⚓“What do you have against me, that you have come to fight against me in my land?”
13And the king of the people of Ammon answered the messengers of Jephthah, ⚓“Because Israel took away my land when they came up out of Egypt, from ⚓the Arnon as far as ⚓the Jabbok, and to the Jordan. Now therefore, restore those lands peaceably.”
14So Jephthah again sent messengers to the king of the people of Ammon,
15and said to him, “Thus says Jephthah: ⚓‘Israel did not take away the land of Moab, nor the land of the people of Ammon;
16for when Israel came up from Egypt, they walked through the wilderness as far as the Red Sea and ⚓came to Kadesh.
17Then ⚓Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, “Please let me pass through your land.” ⚓But the king of Edom would not heed. And in like manner they sent to the ⚓king of Moab, but he would not consent. So Israel ⚓remained in Kadesh.
18And they ⚓went along through the wilderness and ⚓bypassed the land of Edom and the land of Moab, came to the east side of the land of Moab, and encamped on the other side of the Arnon. But they did not enter the border of Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab.
19Then ⚓Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, king of Heshbon; and Israel said to him, “Please ⚓let us pass through your land into our place.”
20⚓But Sihon did not trust Israel to pass through his territory. So Sihon gathered all his people together, encamped in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.
21And the Lord God of Israel ⚓delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they ⚓defeated them. Thus Israel gained possession of all the land of the Amorites, who inhabited that country.
22They took possession of ⚓all the territory of the Amorites, from the Arnon to the Jabbok and from the wilderness to the Jordan.
23‘And now the Lord God of Israel has dispossessed the Amorites from before His people Israel; should you then possess it?
24Will you not possess whatever ⚓Chemosh your god gives you to possess? So whatever ⚓the Lord our God takes possession of before us, we will possess.
25And now, are you any better than ⚓Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever strive against Israel? Did he ever fight against them?
26While Israel dwelt in ⚓Heshbon and its villages, in ⚓Aroer and its villages, and in all the cities along the banks of the Arnon, for three hundred years, why did you not recover them within that time?
27Therefore I have not sinned against you, but you wronged me by fighting against me. May the Lord, ⚓the Judge, ⚓render judgment this day between the children of Israel and the people of Ammon.’ ”
28However, the king of the people of Ammon did not heed the words which Jephthah sent him.
Jephthah’s Vow and Victory
29Then ⚓the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthah, and he passed through Gilead and Manasseh, and passed through Mizpah of Gilead; and from Mizpah of Gilead he advanced toward the people of Ammon.
30And Jephthah ⚓made a vow to the Lord, and said, “If You will indeed deliver the people of Ammon into my hands,
31then it will be that whatever comes out of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the people of Ammon, ⚓shall surely be the Lord’s, ⚓and I will offer it up as a burnt offering.”
32So Jephthah advanced toward the people of Ammon to fight against them, and the Lord delivered them into his hands.
33And he defeated them from Aroer as far as ⚓Minnith—twenty cities—and to Abel Keramim, with a very great slaughter. Thus the people of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.
Jephthah’s Daughter
34When Jephthah came to his house at ⚓Mizpah, there was ⚓his daughter, coming out to meet him with timbrels and dancing; and she was his only child. Besides her he had neither son nor daughter.
35And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he ⚓tore his clothes, and said, “Alas, my daughter! You have brought me very low! You are among those who trouble me! For I ⚓have given my word to the Lord, and ⚓I cannot go back on it.”
36So she said to him, “My father, if you have given your word to the Lord, ⚓do to me according to what has gone out of your mouth, because ⚓the Lord has avenged you of your enemies, the people of Ammon.”
37Then she said to her father, “Let this thing be done for me: let me alone for two months, that I may go and wander on the mountains and bewail my virginity, my friends and I.”
38So he said, “Go.” And he sent her away for two months; and she went with her friends, and bewailed her virginity on the mountains.
39And it was so at the end of two months that she returned to her father, and he ⚓carried out his vow with her which he had vowed. She knew no man.
And it became a custom in Israel
40that the daughters of Israel went four days each year to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite.

Giép-thê
1Giép-thê, người Ga-la-át là một dũng sĩ. Mẹ ông là một gái điếm, cha ông là Ga-la-át.
2Vợ của Ga-la-át cũng sinh được các con trai. Khi các con trai nầy lớn lên, họ đuổi Giép-thê đi mà rằng: “Anh không được hưởng gia tài trong gia đình nầy, vì anh là con của người đàn bà khác.”

4Sau đó, dân Am-môn kéo ra giao chiến với dân Y-sơ-ra-ên.
5Các trưởng lão ở Ga-la-át đến xứ Tóp đem Giép-thê về.
6Họ nói với ông: “Xin về lãnh đạo chúng tôi để chống lại dân Am-môn.”
7Nhưng Giép-thê đáp với họ: “Quý vị há chẳng ghét tôi và đuổi tôi khỏi nhà cha tôi sao? Tại sao bây giờ khi gặp hoạn nạn quý vị lại đến với tôi?”
8Các trưởng lão của Ga-la-át đáp: “Xin ông bỏ qua chuyện cũ, bây giờ chúng tôi xin trở lại với ông, ông hãy đi với chúng tôi để chống cự dân Am-môn, và xin ông hãy làm thủ lãnh của tất cả chúng tôi ở Ga-la-át.”
9Giép-thê đáp: “Quý vị mời tôi về đánh lại dân Am-môn và nếu CHÚA phó dân Am-môn vào tay tôi, liệu quý vị có thật sự để tôi làm thủ lãnh của quý vị không?”
10Các trưởng lão của Ga-la-át đáp: “Xin CHÚA làm chứng. Chúng tôi quả quyết sẽ làm như điều ông nói.”
11Vậy Giép-thê đi với các trưởng lão của Ga-la-át. Dân Ga-la-át lập ông làm thủ lãnh và thống soái của họ. Rồi trước mặt CHÚA, tại Mích-ba, ông lặp lại mọi lời ông đã giao kết.
12Đoạn Giép-thê sai sứ đến vua Am-môn và hỏi: “Chúng tôi với vua có thù nghịch chi mà vua xua quân hãm đánh đất nước chúng tôi?”
13Vua Am-môn trả lời các sứ giả của Giép-thê rằng: “Đó là vì khi dân Y-sơ-ra-ên ra khỏi Ai-cập có chiếm lấy đất của ta, từ Ạt-nôn cho đến Gia-bốc và đến tận sông Giô-đanh. Vậy bây giờ hãy êm thắm trả lại cho ta.”
14Giép-thê sai các sứ giả trở lại vua Am-môn,
15và nói: “Giép-thê nói như vầy: Y-sơ-ra-ên không có lấy đất của Mô-áp hoặc đất của dân Am-môn.
16Nhưng khi họ ra khỏi Ai-cập, họ đi qua đồng vắng để đến Hồng Hải, rồi tiếp tục đến Ca-đê.
17Khi ấy Y-sơ-ra-ên có sai các sứ giả đến thưa với vua của Ê-đôm rằng: ‘Xin cho phép chúng tôi đi ngang qua xứ của vua.’ Nhưng vua Ê-đôm không chấp thuận. Họ bèn sai các sứ giả đến với vua Mô-áp, nhưng vua ấy cũng chối từ. Vậy dân Y-sơ-ra-ên phải ở lại Ca-đê.
18Sau đó, Y-sơ-ra-ên phải đi vào trong sa mạc, đi vòng bên ngoài lãnh thổ của Ê-đôm và Mô-áp, rồi đi dọc theo biên giới phía đông của nước Mô-áp, và hạ trại phía bên kia của Ạt-nôn. Họ không vào lãnh thổ của Mô-áp, vì Ạt-nôn là ranh giới của Mô-áp.
19Kế đó, Y-sơ-ra-ên sai các sứ giả đến Si-hôn, là vua A-mô-rít, đang trị vì tại Hết-bôn, và tâu rằng: ‘Xin cho phép chúng tôi đi ngang qua nước của vua để vào xứ của chúng tôi.’ ”
20Tuy nhiên, Si-hôn không tin tưởng dân Y-sơ-ra-ên, nên không cho họ đi ngang qua nước mình. Đã thế vua còn triệu tập tất cả quân đội mình đến hạ trại tại Gia-hát để đánh Y-sơ-ra-ên.
21Bấy giờ CHÚA, Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên, đã phó Si-hôn và tất cả quân đội của vua ấy vào tay Y-sơ-ra-ên. Y-sơ-ra-ên đánh bại họ và chiếm toàn xứ của dân A-mô-rít đang sống.
22Họ tiếp thu cả xứ, từ Ạt-nôn cho đến Gia-bốc, từ trong sa mạc cho đến sông Giô-đanh.
23Vậy CHÚA, Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên, đã đuổi dân A-mô-rít đi khỏi trước mặt dân Y-sơ-ra-ên của Ngài rồi, thì bây giờ vua lấy quyền gì mà đòi những đất ấy lại?
24Vua há chẳng nhận lấy những gì mà Kê-mốt, là thần của vua, ban cho vua sao? Cũng vậy, những gì mà CHÚA, là Thần của chúng tôi ban cho chúng tôi thì chúng tôi giữ lấy.
25Vua há có giỏi hơn Ba-lác, con trai Xếp-bô, là vua của Mô-áp chăng? Vua ấy có bao giờ dám tranh chấp hay chống chọi với Y-sơ-ra-ên chăng?
26Trong ba trăm năm, Y-sơ-ra-ên chiếm lấy Hết-bôn và những vùng phụ cận nó, A-rô-e và những vùng phụ cận nó, và tất cả các thành dọc theo Ạt-nôn, tại sao trong khoảng thời gian đó vua không lấy lại đi?
27Tôi không có làm gì sai với vua đâu, nhưng vua có làm sai với tôi đó, vì vua gây chiến chống tôi. Cầu xin CHÚA, là Đấng Phán Xét, xét xử sự tranh tụng giữa dân Y-sơ-ra-ên và dân Am-môn.
28Tuy nhiên, vua của Am-môn không thèm để ý đến những lời của Giép-thê sai trình tâu với vua.
29Bấy giờ Thần của CHÚA cảm động Giép-thê. Ông băng qua Ga-la-át và Ma-na-se, rồi vượt qua Mích-ba ở Ga-la-át, và từ đó ông tiến đánh dân Am-môn.
30Giép-thê khấn nguyện với CHÚA rằng: “Nếu CHÚA phó dân Am-môn vào tay con,
31thì khi con chiến thắng dân Am-môn trở về, bất cứ người nào từ cửa nhà con đi ra đón con, người ấy sẽ thuộc về CHÚA, con sẽ dâng người ấy làm tế lễ thiêu cho CHÚA.”
32Rồi Giép-thê tiến đánh dân Am-môn, và CHÚA phó chúng vào tay ông.
33Ông đánh hạ hai mươi thành của chúng, từ A-rô-e cho đến vùng phụ cận của Mi-nít, kéo dài đến A-bên Kê-ra-mim. Ấy là một cuộc bại trận rất lớn. Như thế, dân Am-môn bị khuất phục trước mặt dân Y-sơ-ra-ên.
34Khi Giép-thê trở về nhà ông tại Mích-ba; kìa, con gái của ông cầm trống con đi ra nhảy múa đón mừng ông. Nàng lại là đứa con một. Ngoài nàng ra Giép-thê không có con trai hay con gái nào khác.
35Khi Giép-thê thấy nàng, thì ông xé áo ông và khóc: “Ôi, con của cha ơi, con làm cho cha đau khổ và khó xử biết bao; bởi vì cha có khấn nguyện với CHÚA, và cha không thể nuốt lời được.”
36Nàng đáp: “Thưa cha, nếu cha đã có lời khấn nguyện với CHÚA, xin cha hãy làm cho con y như những lời cha đã khấn hứa. Vì bây giờ CHÚA đã báo trả những kẻ thù nghịch của cha là dân Am-môn rồi.”
37Đoạn, nàng nói với ông: “Nhưng xin cha cho con xin điều nầy. Xin cha cho con hai tháng để con rong chơi trên núi rừng và để con cùng với bạn bè con khóc cho sự đồng trinh của con.”
38Ông đáp: “Con cứ đi.” Rồi ông để cho nàng đi hai tháng. Nàng và các bạn nàng lên núi và khóc cho sự đồng trinh của nàng.
39Sau hai tháng, nàng trở về với cha nàng, và ông đã làm cho nàng như lời ông đã khấn nguyện. Nàng chẳng hề biết một người nam nào.
Kể từ đó, trong Y-sơ-ra-ên có tục lệ,
40hằng năm các thiếu nữ trong Y-sơ-ra-ên dành bốn ngày để đi than khóc con gái của Giép-thê, người Ga-la-át.
