1Now all ⚓the people gathered together as one man in the open square that was⚓in front of the Water Gate; and they told Ezra the ⚓scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses, which the Lord had commanded Israel.
2So Ezra the priest brought ⚓the Law before the assembly of men and women and all who could hear with understanding ⚓on the first day of the seventh month.
3Then he ⚓read from it in the open square that was in front of the Water Gate from morning until midday, before the men and women and those who could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive to the Book of the Law.
4So Ezra the scribe stood on a platform of wood which they had made for the purpose; and beside him, at his right hand, stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Urijah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah; and at his left hand Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hashbadana, Zechariah, and Meshullam.
5And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was standing above all the people; and when he opened it, all the people ⚓stood up.
6And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God.
Then all the people ⚓answered, “Amen, Amen!” while ⚓lifting up their hands. And they ⚓bowed their heads and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground.
7Also Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, ⚓helped the people to understand the Law; and the people ⚓stood in their place.
8So they read distinctly from the book, in the Law of God; and they gave the sense, and helped them to understand the reading.
9⚓And Nehemiah, who was the governor, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, ⚓“This day is holy to the Lord your God; ⚓do not mourn nor weep.” For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the Law.
10Then he said to them, “Go your way, eat the fat, drink the sweet, ⚓and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”
11So the Levites quieted all the people, saying, “Be still, for the day is holy; do not be grieved.”
12And all the people went their way to eat and drink, to ⚓send portions and rejoice greatly, because they ⚓understood the words that were declared to them.
The Feast of Tabernacles
13Now on the second day the heads of the fathers’ houses of all the people, with the priests and Levites, were gathered to Ezra the scribe, in order to understand the words of the Law.
14And they found written in the Law, which the Lord had commanded by Moses, that the children of Israel should dwell in ⚓booths during the feast of the seventh month,
15and ⚓that they should announce and proclaim in all their cities and ⚓in Jerusalem, saying, “Go out to the mountain, and ⚓bring olive branches, branches of oil trees, myrtle branches, palm branches, and branches of leafy trees, to make booths, as it is written.”
16Then the people went out and brought them and made themselves booths, each one on the ⚓roof of his house, or in their courtyards or the courts of the house of God, and in the open square of the ⚓Water Gate ⚓and in the open square of the Gate of Ephraim.
17So the whole assembly of those who had returned from the captivity made booths and sat under the booths; for since the days of Joshua the son of Nun until that day the children of Israel had not done so. And there was very ⚓great gladness.
18Also ⚓day by day, from the first day until the last day, he read from the Book of the Law of God. And they kept the feast ⚓seven days; and on the ⚓eighth day there was a sacred assembly, according to the prescribed manner.

1Tất cả dân Ít-ra-en tập họp tại công viên gần Cổng Nước. Họ yêu cầu E-xơ-ra là chuyên gia về luật mang đến Sách Giáo Huấn của Mô-se mà CHÚA đã ban cho dân Ít-ra-en.
2Cho nên ngày đầu tiên của tháng⚓, E-xơ-ra là thầy tế lễ mang sách Giáo Huấn ra đọc cho dân chúng. Đàn ông, đàn bà, và tất cả những ai có thể nghe và hiểu được đều họp lại.
3Tại công viên gần Cổng Nước, E-xơ-ra đọc lớn lời Giáo Huấn từ sáng sớm cho đến trưa cho tất cả đàn ông, đàn bà, cùng những ai có thể nghe và hiểu được. Mọi người đều chăm chú nghe Sách Giáo Huấn.
4Chuyên gia luật pháp E-xơ-ra đứng trên một bục gỗ cao đã được đóng cho việc đó. Bên phải ông có Ma-ti-thia, Sê-ma, A-nai-gia, U-ri-a, Hinh-kia, và Ma-a-sê-gia. Bên trái ông có Bê-đai-gia, Mi-sa-ên, Manh-ki-gia, Ha-sun, Hát-bát-đa-na, Xa-cha-ri, và Mê-su-lam.
5E-xơ-ra mở sách ra trước mắt mọi người, vì ông đứng cao hơn họ. Khi ông mở sách ra thì mọi người đứng dậy.
6E-xơ-ra ca ngợi CHÚA, Thượng Đế chí cao, mọi người liền giơ tay lên trời nói, “A-men! A-men!” Rồi họ sấp mặt xuống đất bái lạy CHÚA.
7Những người Lê-vi sau đây giải thích Lời Giáo Huấn cho dân chúng đang đứng đó: Giê-sua, Ba-ni, Sê-rê-bia, Gia-min, Ác-cúp, Sa-bê-thai, Hô-đia, Ma-a-sê-gia, Kê-li-ta, A-xa-ria, Giô-xa-bát, Ha-nan, và Bê-lai-gia.
8Họ đọc Sách Giáo Huấn của Thượng Đế và giải nghĩa cho dân chúng hiểu điều đang đọc.
9Rồi Nê-hê-mi, quan tổng trấn, E-xơ-ra, thầy tế lễ và chuyên gia luật, và những người Lê-vi đang dạy dỗ bảo toàn thể dân chúng, “Hôm nay là ngày thánh⚓ cho CHÚA là Thượng Đế các ngươi. Đừng buồn bã hay than khóc.” Vì dân chúng đều khóc sướt mướt khi nghe đọc lời trong Sách Giáo Huấn.
10Nê-hê-mi bảo, “Hãy đi ăn uống cho ngon. Hãy mang thức ăn cho những người thiếu thốn, vì hôm nay là ngày thánh cho CHÚA. Không nên buồn bã vì sự vui vẻ của CHÚA sẽ giúp các ngươi mạnh dạn.”
11Người Lê-vi khuyên dỗ dân chúng và bảo, “Hãy yên lặng vì hôm nay là ngày thánh. Đừng buồn.”
12Vậy dân chúng đi về ăn và uống, gởi thực phẩm cho những người khác và hớn hở ăn mừng. Sau cùng họ đã hiểu được điều dạy dỗ.
13Vào ngày mồng hai của tháng, các trưởng gia đình, các thầy tế lễ, và những người Lê-vi họp chung với chuyên gia luật E-xơ-ra. Họ họp nhau lại để học hỏi những lời trong Sách Giáo Huấn.
14Họ thấy trong Sách Giáo Huấn viết như sau: CHÚA truyền qua Mô-se là dân Ít-ra-en phải ở trong các chòi lá vào thời gian kỷ niệm lễ tháng bảy.
15Dân chúng phải phổ biến lời dạy dỗ sau đây trong các thị trấn và tại Giê-ru-sa-lem: “Hãy lên núi, hái về các nhánh ô-liu cùng các cây ô-liu hoang, cành cây sim, cành chà là, và cành cây có bóng mát. Dùng những nhành cây đó làm chòi lá theo như đã viết.”
16Cho nên dân chúng đi ra mang về các nhánh cây. Họ dựng chòi lá trên mái nhà, trong sân, trong sân đền thờ, trong công viên ở Cổng Nước, và nơi công viên kế bên Cổng Ép-ra-im.
17Tất cả những người đã trở về từ cuộc lưu đày đều dựng chòi ở trong đó. Từ thời Giô-suê, con trai của Nun cho đến lúc bấy giờ dân Ít-ra-en chưa hề làm như vậy. Ai nấy đều rất vui mừng.
18Mỗi ngày E-xơ-ra đọc cho họ nghe Sách Giáo Huấn, từ ngày đầu tới ngày cuối. Dân Ít-ra-en cử hành lễ trong bảy ngày, rồi đến ngày thứ tám họ họp nhau lại theo như luật định.
