1Now all ⚓the people gathered together as one man in the open square that was⚓in front of the Water Gate; and they told Ezra the ⚓scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses, which the Lord had commanded Israel.
2So Ezra the priest brought ⚓the Law before the assembly of men and women and all who could hear with understanding ⚓on the first day of the seventh month.
3Then he ⚓read from it in the open square that was in front of the Water Gate from morning until midday, before the men and women and those who could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive to the Book of the Law.
4So Ezra the scribe stood on a platform of wood which they had made for the purpose; and beside him, at his right hand, stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Urijah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah; and at his left hand Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hashbadana, Zechariah, and Meshullam.
5And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was standing above all the people; and when he opened it, all the people ⚓stood up.
6And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God.
Then all the people ⚓answered, “Amen, Amen!” while ⚓lifting up their hands. And they ⚓bowed their heads and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground.
7Also Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, ⚓helped the people to understand the Law; and the people ⚓stood in their place.
8So they read distinctly from the book, in the Law of God; and they gave the sense, and helped them to understand the reading.
9⚓And Nehemiah, who was the governor, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, ⚓“This day is holy to the Lord your God; ⚓do not mourn nor weep.” For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the Law.
10Then he said to them, “Go your way, eat the fat, drink the sweet, ⚓and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”
11So the Levites quieted all the people, saying, “Be still, for the day is holy; do not be grieved.”
12And all the people went their way to eat and drink, to ⚓send portions and rejoice greatly, because they ⚓understood the words that were declared to them.
The Feast of Tabernacles
13Now on the second day the heads of the fathers’ houses of all the people, with the priests and Levites, were gathered to Ezra the scribe, in order to understand the words of the Law.
14And they found written in the Law, which the Lord had commanded by Moses, that the children of Israel should dwell in ⚓booths during the feast of the seventh month,
15and ⚓that they should announce and proclaim in all their cities and ⚓in Jerusalem, saying, “Go out to the mountain, and ⚓bring olive branches, branches of oil trees, myrtle branches, palm branches, and branches of leafy trees, to make booths, as it is written.”
16Then the people went out and brought them and made themselves booths, each one on the ⚓roof of his house, or in their courtyards or the courts of the house of God, and in the open square of the ⚓Water Gate ⚓and in the open square of the Gate of Ephraim.
17So the whole assembly of those who had returned from the captivity made booths and sat under the booths; for since the days of Joshua the son of Nun until that day the children of Israel had not done so. And there was very ⚓great gladness.
18Also ⚓day by day, from the first day until the last day, he read from the Book of the Law of God. And they kept the feast ⚓seven days; and on the ⚓eighth day there was a sacred assembly, according to the prescribed manner.

E-xơ-ra đọc luật pháp trước công chúng
1Bấy giờ tất cả dân chúng đều họp lại như một người tại quảng trường trước cổng Nước. Họ xin thầy thông giáo E-xơ-ra đem cuộn sách luật pháp của Môi-se ra; đó là luật pháp mà Đức Giê-hô-va đã truyền dạy cho Y-sơ-ra-ên.
2Vậy, vào ngày mồng một tháng bảy, thầy tế lễ E-xơ-ra đem cuộn sách luật pháp đến trước mặt hội chúng cả nam lẫn nữ, cùng tất cả những người có thể nghe và hiểu được.
3Ông đứng tại quảng trường trước cổng Nước đọc trong cuộn sách ấy từ rạng đông cho đến trưa, trước mặt hội chúng cả nam lẫn nữ cùng những người có thể hiểu được. Tất cả dân chúng lắng tai nghe đọc sách luật pháp.
4Thầy thông giáo E-xơ-ra đứng trên bục gỗ mà người ta làm nhân dịp ấy; Ma-ti-thia, Sê-ma, A-na-gia, U-ri, Hinh-kia và Ma-a-xê-gia đứng gần ông, phía bên phải; còn bên trái ông thì có Phê-đa-gia, Mi-sa-ên, Manh-ki-gia, Ha-sum, Hách-ba-đa-na, Xa-cha-ri và Mê-su-lam
5E-xơ-ra mở sách ra trước mặt cả dân chúng vì ông đứng cao hơn họ; và khi ông mở sách ra thì dân chúng đều đứng dậy.
6E-xơ-ra chúc tụng Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời cao cả, và tất cả dân chúng giơ tay lên mà đáp lại rằng: “A-men, A-men,” rồi họ cúi đầu, sấp mặt xuống đất mà thờ phượng Đức Giê-hô-va.
7Giê-sua, Ba-ni, Sê-rê-bia, Gia-min, A-cúp, Sa-bê-thai, Hô-đi-gia, Ma-a-xê-gia, Kê-li-ta, A-xa-ria, Giô-xa-bát, Ha-nan, Phê-la-gia và người Lê-vi giải thích cho dân chúng hiểu luật pháp, còn dân chúng vẫn đứng tại chỗ.
8Họ đọc rõ ràng trong sách luật pháp của Đức Chúa Trời rồi giải nghĩa⚓ cho người ta hiểu lời họ đọc.
9Nê-hê-mi, quan tổng đốc, E-xơ-ra thầy tế lễ cũng là thầy thông giáo, cùng người Lê-vi dạy dỗ dân chúng, nói với mọi người Y-sơ-ra-ên rằng: “Ngày nay là thánh cho Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời của anh em. Đừng để tang hay khóc lóc.” Vì cả dân chúng đều khóc khi nghe đọc những lời trong luật pháp.
10Nê-hê-mi nói với họ: “Hãy đi ăn đồ ăn béo, uống thức uống ngọt và hãy gửi phần ăn cho ai không sắm sửa gì hết vì hôm nay là ngày biệt ra thánh cho Chúa chúng ta. Đừng buồn thảm vì sự vui vẻ về Đức Giê-hô-va là sức mạnh của anh em.”
11Vậy người Lê-vi trấn an dân chúng và nói: “Hãy im lặng vì ngày nay là thánh, đừng buồn thảm nữa!”
12Toàn thể dân chúng đi ra ăn uống và gửi phần ăn cho người không có. Họ liên hoan trọng thể vì họ hiểu được các lời người ta đã truyền dạy cho mình.
Giữ lễ Lều Tạm
13Qua ngày mồng hai, các trưởng tộc trong dân chúng, những thầy tế lễ và người Lê-vi đều nhóm lại với thầy thông giáo E-xơ-ra để lắng nghe các lời của luật pháp.
14Họ thấy có chép trong luật pháp mà Đức Giê-hô-va phán qua Môi-se bảo dân Y-sơ-ra-ên phải ở trong các lều tạm suốt kỳ lễ vào tháng bảy⚓
15và họ phải rao truyền trong các thành cũng như tại Giê-ru-sa-lem rằng: “Hãy lên núi tìm những nhánh ô-liu và cây ô-liu rừng, nhánh cây sim, lá kè và những nhánh cây rậm lá để làm những lều tạm” như đã chép.
16Vậy dân chúng đi ra đem các lá ấy về và mỗi người làm lều tạm trên mái nhà mình, ngoài sân, trong hành lang của đền Đức Chúa Trời, nơi quảng trường trước cổng Nước và quảng trường trước cổng Ép-ra-im.
17Cả hội chúng của những người bị lưu đày trở về làm những lều tạm và ở trong đó. Từ đời Giô-suê, con trai của Nun, cho đến ngày ấy dân Y-sơ-ra-ên chưa bao giờ làm như vậy. Họ tràn ngập niềm vui.
18Mỗi ngày, từ ngày đầu cho đến ngày cuối, người ta đọc trong sách luật pháp của Đức Chúa Trời. Họ ăn mừng lễ hội trong bảy ngày, và ngày thứ tám có một lễ trọng thể theo luật định.
