¹Ahithophel said to Absalom, “I would⚓ choose twelve thousand men and set out tonight in pursuit of David. ²I would attack him while he is weary and weak. I would strike him with terror, and then all the people with him will flee. I would strike down only the king ³and bring all the people back to you. The death of the man you seek will mean the return of all; all the people will be unharmed.” ⁴This plan seemed good to Absalom and to all the elders of Israel.
⁵But Absalom said, “Summon also Hushai the Arkite, so we can hear what he has to say as well.” ⁶When Hushai came to him, Absalom said, “Ahithophel has given this advice. Should we do what he says? If not, give us your opinion.”
⁷Hushai replied to Absalom, “The advice Ahithophel has given is not good this time. ⁸You know your father and his men; they are fighters, and as fierce as a wild bear robbed of her cubs. Besides, your father is an experienced fighter; he will not spend the night with the troops. ⁹Even now, he is hidden in a cave or some other place. If he should attack your troops first,⚓ whoever hears about it will say, ‘There has been a slaughter among the troops who follow Absalom.’ ¹⁰Then even the bravest soldier, whose heart is like the heart of a lion, will melt with fear, for all Israel knows that your father is a fighter and that those with him are brave.
¹¹“So I advise you: Let all Israel, from Dan to Beersheba—as numerous as the sand on the seashore—be gathered to you, with you yourself leading them into battle. ¹²Then we will attack him wherever he may be found, and we will fall on him as dew settles on the ground. Neither he nor any of his men will be left alive. ¹³If he withdraws into a city, then all Israel will bring ropes to that city, and we will drag it down to the valley until not so much as a pebble is left.”
¹⁴Absalom and all the men of Israel said, “The advice of Hushai the Arkite is better than that of Ahithophel.” For the Lord had determined to frustrate the good advice of Ahithophel in order to bring disaster on Absalom.
¹⁵Hushai told Zadok and Abiathar, the priests, “Ahithophel has advised Absalom and the elders of Israel to do such and such, but I have advised them to do so and so. ¹⁶Now send a message at once and tell David, ‘Do not spend the night at the fords in the wilderness; cross over without fail, or the king and all the people with him will be swallowed up.’ ”
¹⁷Jonathan and Ahimaaz were staying at En Rogel. A female servant was to go and inform them, and they were to go and tell King David, for they could not risk being seen entering the city. ¹⁸But a young man saw them and told Absalom. So the two of them left at once and went to the house of a man in Bahurim. He had a well in his courtyard, and they climbed down into it. ¹⁹His wife took a covering and spread it out over the opening of the well and scattered grain over it. No one knew anything about it.
²⁰When Absalom’s men came to the woman at the house, they asked, “Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?”
The woman answered them, “They crossed over the brook.”⚓ The men searched but found no one, so they returned to Jerusalem.
²¹After they had gone, the two climbed out of the well and went to inform King David. They said to him, “Set out and cross the river at once; Ahithophel has advised such and such against you.” ²²So David and all the people with him set out and crossed the Jordan. By daybreak, no one was left who had not crossed the Jordan.
²³When Ahithophel saw that his advice had not been followed, he saddled his donkey and set out for his house in his hometown. He put his house in order and then hanged himself. So he died and was buried in his father’s tomb.

Absalom’s Death

²⁴David went to Mahanaim, and Absalom crossed the Jordan with all the men of Israel. ²⁵Absalom had appointed Amasa over the army in place of Joab. Amasa was the son of Jether,⚓ an Ishmaelite⚓ who had married Abigail⚓ , the daughter of Nahash and sister of Zeruiah the mother of Joab. ²⁶The Israelites and Absalom camped in the land of Gilead.
²⁷When David came to Mahanaim, Shobi son of Nahash from Rabbah of the Ammonites, and Makir son of Ammiel from Lo Debar, and Barzillai the Gileadite from Rogelim ²⁸brought bedding and bowls and articles of pottery. They also brought wheat and barley, flour and roasted grain, beans and lentils,⚓ ²⁹honey and curds, sheep, and cheese from cows’ milk for David and his people to eat. For they said, “The people have become exhausted and hungry and thirsty in the wilderness.”

⁵Nhưng Áp-sa-lôm nói: “Hãy gọi Hu-sai, người Ạt-kít, đến để chúng ta cũng nghe ý kiến của ông ấy nữa.” ⁶Khi Hu-sai đến, Áp-sa-lôm nói với ông: “A-hi-tô-phe đã nói như vậy, chúng ta có nên làm theo lời ông ấy không? Nếu không, ông cho biết ý kiến.” ⁷Hu-sai nói với Áp-sa-lôm: “Lần nầy, kế hoạch của A-hi-tô-phe không được hay.” ⁸Hu-sai nói tiếp: “Bệ hạ đã biết vua cha và các thuộc hạ người là những dũng sĩ; lòng họ đang cay đắng như gấu mẹ mất con trong rừng. Hơn nữa, vua cha là một chiến sĩ đầy kinh nghiệm, người sẽ không nghỉ đêm với quân lính đâu. ⁹Lúc nầy, chắc người đang ẩn núp trong hầm hố hay một nơi nào đó. Nếu ngay trận đầu, một số quân ta bị thương vong, thì bất cứ ai nghe cũng sẽ nói: ‘Phe của Áp-sa-lôm đã bị đánh bại.’ ¹⁰Khi ấy, ngay cả người can đảm nhất, dù có gan như sư tử cũng phải khiếp sợ, vì toàn thể Y-sơ-ra-ên biết rằng thân phụ của bệ hạ là một người anh hùng, và các thuộc hạ đều là những người dũng cảm. ¹¹Vậy, tôi bàn thế nầy: Hãy cho tập hợp chung quanh bệ hạ toàn thể Y-sơ-ra-ên, từ Đan cho đến Bê-e Sê-ba, đông như cát biển, rồi bệ hạ sẽ thân hành cầm quân ra trận. ¹²Chúng ta sẽ tiến đánh Đa-vít bất cứ nơi nào người bị phát hiện, và chúng ta sẽ bủa vây người như sương rơi trên đất; như thế, người và tất cả thuộc hạ không một ai sống sót. ¹³Nếu người rút vào một thành nào, thì toàn thể Y-sơ-ra-ên sẽ đem dây thừng đến, và chúng ta sẽ kéo đổ thành đó xuống thung lũng đến nỗi người ta không còn tìm thấy một viên sỏi nào ở đó.” ¹⁴Áp-sa-lôm và tất cả người Y-sơ-ra-ên đều nói: “Kế hoạch của Hu-sai, người Ạt-kít, hay hơn kế hoạch của A-hi-tô-phe.” Vì Đức Giê-hô-va đã quyết định làm hỏng kế hoạch của A-hi-tô-phe, để đem tai họa đến cho Áp-sa-lôm.

Đa-vít được mật báo và trốn thoát

¹⁵Bấy giờ, Hu-sai nói với các thầy tế lễ Xa-đốc và A-bia-tha: “A-hi-tô-phe đã bàn thế nầy thế nầy với Áp-sa-lôm và các trưởng lão Y-sơ-ra-ên, còn tôi thì bàn thế kia thế kia. ¹⁶Vậy bây giờ, hãy lập tức sai người báo tin cho Đa-vít: ‘Xin bệ hạ đừng nghỉ đêm tại những chỗ qua sông vào hoang mạc, mà phải qua sông ngay; nếu không, bệ hạ và tất cả những người đi theo sẽ bị tiêu diệt.’”
¹⁷Giô-na-than và A-hi-mát đang đứng chờ tin tại Ên Rô-ghên, họ không vào thành vì sợ bị phát hiện. Một đầy tớ gái đến đưa tin cho họ để họ báo lại cho vua Đa-vít. ¹⁸Nhưng có một thanh niên thấy họ và báo cho Áp-sa-lôm. Hai người vội vàng đi và đến nhà một người ở Ba-hu-rim. Người nầy có một cái giếng trong sân, và họ xuống đó. ¹⁹Vợ của người nầy lấy một tấm bố trải trên miệng giếng, rồi rải thóc lên trên để không ai nghi ngờ gì cả. ²⁰Các thuộc hạ của Áp-sa-lôm đến nhà người phụ nữ nầy và hỏi: “A-hi-mát và Giô-na-than ở đâu?” Bà trả lời: “Họ đã qua suối rồi.” Chúng đi tìm nhưng không gặp, nên trở về Giê-ru-sa-lem.
²¹Sau khi chúng đi rồi, A-hi-mát và Giô-na-than lên khỏi giếng và đi báo tin cho vua Đa-vít. Họ nói với Đa-vít: “Xin bệ hạ trỗi dậy và nhanh chóng qua sông, vì A-hi-tô-phe đã bàn mưu như thế nầy, thế nầy chống lại bệ hạ.” ²²Đa-vít và tất cả những người theo vua đều trỗi dậy qua sông Giô-đanh. Vừa rạng đông, không còn một ai chưa qua sông Giô-đanh.

A-hi-tô-phe chết. – Đa-vít tại Ma-ha-na-im

²³Khi A-hi-tô-phe thấy người ta không làm theo kế hoạch của mình thì thắng lừa lên đường trở về nhà ở trong thành của mình. Sau khi sắp xếp việc nhà xong, ông treo cổ tự tử. Người ta chôn ông trong mộ của cha ông.
²⁴Trong khi Đa-vít đi đến Ma-ha-na-im thì Áp-sa-lôm cùng với tất cả người Y-sơ-ra-ên theo ông qua sông Giô-đanh. ²⁵Áp-sa-lôm chỉ định A-ma-sa làm tổng tư lệnh quân đội thay thế Giô-áp. A-ma-sa là con trai của một người Y-sơ-ra-ên⚓ tên là Gít-ra, là người đã ăn ở với A-bi-ga-in, con gái của Na-hách, và là chị của Xê-ru-gia, mẹ của Giô-áp. ²⁶Y-sơ-ra-ên và Áp-sa-lôm đóng trại tại đất Ga-la-át.
²⁷Khi Đa-vít đã đến Ma-ha-na-im thì Sô-bi, con của Na-hách, từ thành Ráp-ba của người Am-môn, với Ma-ki, con của A-mi-ên, từ thành Lô Đê-ba, và Bát-xi-lai người Ga-la-át, từ thành Rô-ghê-lim, ²⁸đem giường, bát đĩa, chậu gốm, lúa mì, lúa mạch, bột mì, hột rang, đậu, đậu lăng, và các thứ hột rang khác, ²⁹mật ong, sữa đông, chiên, và phó mát lấy từ sữa bò, đến cho Đa-vít và những người đi theo vua dùng. Vì họ nói rằng: “Dân chúng đã đói khát và mệt mỏi trong hoang mạc.”
