The Family of Elkanah

¹Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim Zophim, of the ⚓mountains of Ephraim, and his name was⚓Elkanah the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, ⚓an Ephraimite. ²And he had ⚓two wives: the name of one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children. ³This man went up from his city ⚓yearly ⚓to worship and sacrifice to the Lord of hosts in ⚓Shiloh. Also the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the Lord, were there. ⁴And whenever the time came for Elkanah to make an ⚓offering, he would give portions to Peninnah his wife and to all her sons and daughters. ⁵But to Hannah he would give a double portion, for he loved Hannah, ⚓although the Lord had closed her womb. ⁶And her rival also ⚓provoked her severely, to make her miserable, because the Lord had closed her womb. ⁷So it was, year by year, when she went up to the house of the Lord, that she provoked her; therefore she wept and did not eat.

Hannah’s Vow

⁸Then Elkanah her husband said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? And why is your heart grieved? Am I not ⚓better to you than ten sons?”
⁹So Hannah arose after they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat by the doorpost of ⚓the tabernacle of the Lord. ¹⁰⚓And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to the Lord and wept in anguish. ¹¹Then she ⚓made a vow and said, “O Lord of hosts, if You will indeed ⚓look on the affliction of Your maidservant and ⚓remember me, and not forget Your maidservant, but will give Your maidservant a male child, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and ⚓no razor shall come upon his head.”
¹²And it happened, as she continued praying before the Lord, that Eli watched her mouth. ¹³Now Hannah spoke in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli thought she was drunk. ¹⁴So Eli said to her, “How long will you be drunk? Put your wine away from you!”
¹⁵But Hannah answered and said, “No, my lord, I am a woman of sorrowful spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor intoxicating drink, but have ⚓poured out my soul before the Lord. ¹⁶“Do not consider your maidservant a ⚓wicked woman, for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief I have spoken until now.”
¹⁷Then Eli answered and said, ⚓“Go in peace, and ⚓the God of Israel grant your petition which you have asked of Him.”
¹⁸And she said, ⚓“Let your maidservant find favor in your sight.” So the woman ⚓went her way and ate, and her face was no longer sad.

Samuel Is Born and Dedicated

¹⁹Then they rose early in the morning and worshiped before the Lord, and returned and came to their house at Ramah. And Elkanah ⚓knew Hannah his wife, and the Lord⚓remembered her. ²⁰So it came to pass in the process of time that Hannah conceived and bore a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, “Because I have asked for him from the Lord.”
²¹Now the man Elkanah and all his house ⚓went up to offer to the Lord the yearly sacrifice and his vow. ²²But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, “Not until the child is weaned; then I will ⚓take him, that he may appear before the Lord and ⚓remain there ⚓forever.”
²³So ⚓Elkanah her husband said to her, “Do what seems best to you; wait until you have weaned him. Only let the Lord establish His word.” Then the woman stayed and nursed her son until she had weaned him.
²⁴Now when she had weaned him, she ⚓took him up with her, with three bulls, one ephah of flour, and a skin of wine, and brought him to ⚓the house of the Lord in Shiloh. And the child was young. ²⁵Then they slaughtered a bull, and ⚓brought the child to Eli. ²⁶And she said, “O my lord! ⚓As your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman who stood by you here, praying to the Lord. ²⁷⚓For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition which I asked of Him. ²⁸Therefore I also have lent him to the Lord; as long as he lives he shall be lent to the Lord.” So they ⚓worshiped the Lord there.

Nỗi Buồn của Han-na

¹Ngày xưa ở Ra-ma-tha-im có dòng họ Xô-phim sống trong miền cao nguyên của Ép-ra-im; tại đó có một người tên Ên-ca-na con của Giê-rô-ham, con của Ê-li-hu, con của Tô-hu, con của Xu-phơ, thuộc chi tộc Ép-ra-im. ²Ên-ca-na có hai vợ; một bà tên Han-na và bà kia tên Pê-nin-na. Pê-nin-na có con, còn Han-na không con.
³Hằng năm Ên-ca-na thường đi từ thành ông ở lên Si-lô, nơi hai con trai của Ê-li là Hóp-ni và Phi-nê-a đang làm tư tế của CHÚA, để thờ phượng và dâng con vật hiến tế lên CHÚA các đạo quân. ⁴Ðến ngày Ên-ca-na dâng con vật hiến tế, ông thường chia phần cho Pê-nin-na vợ ông và cho các con trai và con gái của bà; ⁵nhưng đối với Han-na, ông cho bà một phần gấp đôi, vì ông rất thương yêu bà, mặc dù CHÚA đã để cho dạ bà hiếm muộn không con. ⁶Bà vợ kia, đối thủ của bà, luôn tìm mọi cơ hội để chọc tức bà, làm cho bà càng thêm sầu khổ, vì CHÚA đã để cho dạ bà hiếm muộn không con.
⁷Việc đó cứ tái diễn từ năm nầy đến năm khác. Mỗi khi bà Han-na lên nhà CHÚA, đối thủ của bà cứ chọc tức bà, đến nỗi bà phải khóc và chẳng thiết gì ăn uống. ⁸Ên-ca-na chồng bà thường an ủi bà, “Han-na, sao em khóc? Sao em không chịu ăn? Sao lòng em buồn bã như vậy? Anh không xứng đáng cho em hơn mười đứa con trai sao?”

Han-na Cầu Nguyện

⁹Sau khi gia đình ăn uống xong tại Si-lô, Han-na đứng dậy cầu nguyện. Lúc ấy Tư Tế Ê-li đang ngồi trên ghế bên cửa đền thờ của CHÚA. ¹⁰Với tâm hồn cực kỳ sầu khổ, bà vừa cầu nguyện vừa khóc lóc đắng cay trước mặt CHÚA. ¹¹Bà khấn nguyện, “Lạy CHÚA của các đạo quân, ước chi Ngài nhìn thấy nỗi khổ của con, tớ gái của Ngài. Xin nhớ đến con, và đừng quên tớ gái của Ngài, mà cho tớ gái của Ngài một con trai. Con nguyện dâng nó lên CHÚA, để nó phục vụ Ngài suốt đời nó. Dao cạo sẽ không đụng đến tóc nó.”
¹²Ðang khi bà cứ lâm râm cầu nguyện trước mặt CHÚA, Ê-li để ý miệng bà. ¹³Han-na cứ lầm thầm cầu nguyện, chỉ có môi bà mấp máy, mà không nghe thành tiếng, vì thế Ê-li tưởng bà say rượu. ¹⁴Ê-li bảo bà, “Bà còn say rượu cho đến bao lâu nữa? Thôi hãy về, lo dã rượu đi.”
¹⁵Nhưng Han-na đáp, “Thưa ngài, không phải vậy đâu. Tôi là người đàn bà có tâm sự rất sầu khổ. Không phải tôi bị say vì uống rượu hoặc bia đâu, nhưng tôi đã dốc đổ lòng mình ra trước mặt CHÚA. ¹⁶Xin ngài đừng hiểu lầm tớ gái của ngài là một phụ nữ không đàng hoàng. Vì quá sầu khổ và phiền muộn nên tôi mới cầu nguyện lâu như vậy.”
¹⁷Nghe thế Ê-li nói, “Hãy đi bình an. Ðức Chúa Trời của I-sơ-ra-ên sẽ ban cho bà điều bà cầu xin Ngài.”
¹⁸Bà đáp, “Nguyện tớ gái của ngài được ơn trước mặt ngài.” Rồi người đàn bà ra về, ăn uống, và nét mặt bà không còn buồn rầu nữa.

Sa-mu-ên Chào Ðời và Ðược Dâng Lên CHÚA

¹⁹Sáng hôm sau, gia đình Ên-ca-na dậy sớm; họ thờ phượng trước mặt CHÚA, rồi trở về nhà họ ở Ra-ma. Ên-ca-na biết Han-na vợ ông, và CHÚA nhớ đến bà. ²⁰Han-na thụ thai. Mãn kỳ thai nghén, bà sinh một con trai. Bà đặt tên cho nó là Sa-mu-ên, vì bà nói, “Tôi đã cầu xin CHÚA mới có được nó.”
²¹Ðến kỳ lễ, người chồng là Ên-ca-na đưa cả gia đình ông đi lên để dâng lên CHÚA con vật hiến tế hằng năm và làm trọn lời khấn nguyện của họ, ²²nhưng Han-na không đi với họ. Bà nói với chồng bà, “Ðợi cho đến khi con dứt sữa, em sẽ dẫn nó theo, để nó ra mắt CHÚA, rồi nó sẽ ở lại đó luôn.”
²³Ên-ca-na chồng bà nói, “Em thấy điều gì đúng thì cứ làm. Ðợi đến khi con dứt sữa cũng được, miễn sao em đã hứa với CHÚA thế nào thì phải làm thế ấy là được rồi.” Vậy bà cứ ở nhà, cho con bú cho đến khi nó dứt sữa.
²⁴Khi đứa trẻ đã dứt sữa, bà đưa nó lên với bà. Bà đem theo một con bò đực ba tuổi, một bao bột khoảng hai mươi hai lít, và một bầu da rượu. Lúc ấy đứa trẻ vẫn còn nhỏ lắm. ²⁵Sau khi người ta giết con vật hiến tế, ông bà đưa đứa trẻ đến gặp Ê-li. ²⁶Bà nói, “Thưa ngài, tôi xin chỉ mạng sống của ngài mà thề rằng tôi là người đàn bà đã đứng trước mặt ngài ở chỗ nầy trước đây mà cầu nguyện với CHÚA. ²⁷Tôi đã cầu nguyện để có được đứa trẻ nầy, và CHÚA đã ban cho tôi điều tôi cầu xin Ngài. ²⁸Vì thế, hôm nay tôi xin dâng nó lên CHÚA. Tôi cho CHÚA mượn nó suốt đời nó.” Sau đó, cả gia đình ông bà thờ phượng CHÚA tại đó.
