Kẻ thù chống đối việc tái thiết đền thờ

¹Khi các kẻ thù của Giu-đa và Bên-gia-min nghe tin những người bị lưu đày được trở về xây cất đền thờ cho Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên, ²thì chúng đến với Xô-rô-ba-bên và các trưởng tộc và nói: “Chúng tôi muốn cùng xây cất với các ông, vì chúng tôi cũng tìm kiếm Đức Chúa Trời như các ông và chúng tôi đã dâng tế lễ cho Ngài từ đời Ê-sạt Ha-đôn, vua A-si-ri, là người đem chúng tôi đến đây.”⚓ ³Nhưng Xô-rô-ba-bên, Giê-sua, cùng các trưởng tộc khác của Y-sơ-ra-ên, trả lời với chúng rằng: “Các ông chẳng được dự phần với chúng tôi trong việc xây cất đền thờ cho Đức Chúa Trời của chúng tôi. Nhưng chỉ một mình chúng tôi sẽ cất đền thờ cho Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên, đúng như Si-ru, vua Ba Tư, đã truyền bảo chúng tôi.”
⁴Bấy giờ dân trong xứ làm cho dân Giu-đa nản lòng, sợ hãi trong khi xây cất. ⁵Chúng thuê các cố vấn chống lại dân Giu-đa, nhằm phá hỏng kế hoạch của họ trong suốt thời gian trị vì của Si-ru, vua Ba Tư, cho đến đời Đa-ri-út,⚓ vua Ba Tư.
⁶Vào đời vua A-suê-ru, khi vua bắt đầu trị vì, chúng viết một bản cáo trạng về dân Giu-đa và dân cư Giê-ru-sa-lem.⚓
⁷Đến đời Ạt-ta-xét-xe, thì Bít-lam, Mít-rê-đát, Ta-bê-ên và các đồng liêu của chúng viết sớ tâu lên Ạt-ta-xét-xe, vua Ba Tư. Sớ ấy viết bằng chữ A-ram⚓ và được dịch ra cho vua. ⁸Tư lệnh Rê-hum và thư ký Sim-sai cũng viết sớ chống lại Giê-ru-sa-lem dâng lên vua Ạt-ta-xét-xe như sau:
⁹“Tư lệnh Rê-hum, thư ký Sim-sai, và các đồng liêu, tức là người Đi-nít, người A-phạt-sa-thít, người Tạt-bê-lít, người A-phạt-sít, người Ạt-kê-vít, người Ba-by-lôn, người Su-san, người Đê-ha-vít, người Ê-lam, ¹⁰và các dân tộc khác mà Ô-náp-ba vĩ đại và cao quý đã đem qua và cho định cư trong các thành Sa-ma-ri và các miền khác bên kia sông”⚓
¹¹Đây là bản sao của tờ biểu mà chúng tâu lên vua Ạt-ta-xét-xe:
“Các đầy tớ của đức vua trong tỉnh phía tây sông Ơ-phơ-rát, kính tâu đức vua Ạt-ta-xét-xe. ¹²Kính tâu đức vua biết rằng những người Do Thái từ nơi vua ở đã đến nơi chúng tôi tại Giê-ru-sa-lem. Chúng đang tái thiết thành phản nghịch, gian ác ấy; chúng bắt đầu xây lại vách thành, còn nền móng đã tu bổ xong rồi. ¹³Vậy, xin đức vua biết rằng nếu thành nầy được xây lại, và vách thành được dựng lên thì chúng sẽ không tiến cống, nộp thuế, hoặc đóng tiền mãi lộ, và ngân khố triều đình bị thiệt hại. ¹⁴Vì chúng tôi hưởng lộc⚓ của triều đình, cũng không nỡ ngồi nhìn đức vua bị xúc phạm, nên chúng tôi sai sứ giả đến tâu lên đức vua, ¹⁵để người ta tra cứu trong sử ký của các tổ phụ vua. Khi tra cứu trong sách sử ký ấy, đức vua sẽ biết rằng thành nầy vốn là một thành phản nghịch, gây thiệt hại cho các vua và các tỉnh. Từ thuở xưa, dân ở đó hay dấy loạn và vì cớ ấy mà thành nầy đã bị phá hủy. ¹⁶Chúng tôi trình tâu để đức vua biết rằng nếu thành nầy được cất lại, và vách thành được xây lên thì đức vua sẽ chẳng còn phần đất nào trong tỉnh phía tây sông Ơ-phơ-rát nữa.”
¹⁷Vua ban chiếu chỉ cho tư lệnh Rê-hum, thư ký Sim-sai, và cho các đồng liêu của chúng ở tại Sa-ma-ri và ở trong các miền khác phía bên kia sông, rằng:
“Chúc các ngươi bình an.
¹⁸Tờ biểu các ngươi dâng lên đã được dịch và đọc rõ ràng trước mặt ta. ¹⁹Ta đã ra lệnh tra cứu và thấy rằng từ đời xưa, thành nầy đã từng dấy loạn với các vua, phản nghịch và nổi loạn thường xảy ra trong thành nầy. ²⁰Tại Giê-ru-sa-lem đã có những vua hùng mạnh cai trị ở bên kia sông, và người ta tiến cống, nộp thuế, và đóng tiền mãi lộ cho các vua đó. ²¹Vì vậy, các ngươi hãy ra lệnh đình chỉ việc tái thiết thành này cho đến khi ta ban chiếu chỉ về việc đó. ²²Hãy hành xử thận trọng về việc nầy, kẻo lợi ích của nhà vua bị thiệt hại thêm chăng.”
²³Ngay sau khi đã đọc chiếu chỉ của vua Ạt-ta-xét-xe trước mặt Rê-hum, thư ký Sim-sai và các cộng sự viên thì chúng tức tốc đi đến với dân Do Thái tại Giê-ru-sa-lem, dùng quyền lực buộc họ phải đình chỉ việc xây cất. ²⁴Thế là công việc xây cất đền thờ của Đức Chúa Trời tại Giê-ru-sa-lem bị đình chỉ cho đến năm thứ hai đời Đa-ri-út, vua Ba Tư, cai trị.⚓

Resistance to Rebuilding the Temple

¹Now when ⚓the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the descendants of the captivity were building the temple of the Lord God of Israel, ²they came to Zerubbabel and the heads of the fathers’ houses, and said to them, “Let us build with you, for we seek your God as you do; and we have sacrificed to Him ⚓since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assyria, who brought us here.” ³But Zerubbabel and Jeshua and the rest of the heads of the fathers’ houses of Israel said to them, ⚓“You may do nothing with us to build a house for our God; but we alone will build to the Lord God of Israel, as ⚓King Cyrus the king of Persia has commanded us.” ⁴Then ⚓the people of the land tried to discourage the people of Judah. They troubled them in building, ⁵and hired counselors against them to frustrate their purpose all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of ⚓Darius king of Persia.

Rebuilding of Jerusalem Opposed

⁶In the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, they wrote an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.
⁷In the days of ⚓Artaxerxes also, Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabel, and the rest of their companions wrote to Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the letter was written in ⚓Aramaic script, and translated into the Aramaic language. ⁸Rehum the commander and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to King Artaxerxes in this fashion:
⁹From Rehum the commander, Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions—representatives of ⚓the Dinaites, the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the people of Persia and Erech and Babylon and Shushan, the Dehavites, the Elamites, ¹⁰⚓and the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Osnapper took captive and settled in the cities of Samaria and the remainder beyond the River —⚓and so forth.

To King Artaxerxes from your servants, the men of the region beyond the River, and so forth:
¹²Let it be known to the king that the Jews who came up from you have come to us at Jerusalem, and are building the ⚓rebellious and evil city, and are finishing its⚓walls and repairing the foundations. ¹³Let it now be known to the king that, if this city is built and the walls completed, they will not pay ⚓tax, tribute, or custom, and the king’s treasury will be diminished. ¹⁴Now because we receive support from the palace, it was not proper for us to see the king’s dishonor; therefore we have sent and informed the king, ¹⁵that search may be made in the book of the records of your fathers. And you will find in the book of the records and know that this city is a rebellious city, harmful to kings and provinces, and that they have incited sedition within the city in former times, for which cause this city was destroyed.
¹⁶We inform the king that if this city is rebuilt and its walls are completed, the result will be that you will have no dominion beyond the River.
¹⁷The king sent an answer:
To Rehum the commander, to Shimshai the scribe, to the rest of their companions who dwell in Samaria, and to the remainder beyond the River:
Peace, and so forth.
¹⁸The letter which you sent to us has been clearly read before me. ¹⁹And I gave the command, and a search has been made, and it was found that this city in former times has revolted against kings, and rebellion and sedition have been fostered in it. ²⁰There have also been mighty kings over Jerusalem, who have ⚓ruled over all the region⚓beyond the River; and tax, tribute, and custom were paid to them. ²¹Now give the command to make these men cease, that this city may not be built until the command is given by me.
²²Take heed now that you do not fail to do this. Why should damage increase to the hurt of the kings?
²³Now when the copy of King Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum, Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem against the Jews, and by force of arms made them cease. ²⁴Thus the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem ceased, and it was discontinued until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
