Sodom’s Depravity

¹Now ⚓the two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and ⚓Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them, and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground. ²And he said, “Here now, my lords, please ⚓turn in to your servant’s house and spend the night, and ⚓wash your feet; then you may rise early and go on your way.”
And they said, ⚓“No, but we will spend the night in the open square.”
³But he insisted strongly; so they turned in to him and entered his house. ⚓Then he made them a feast, and baked ⚓unleavened bread, and they ate.
⁴Now before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both old and young, all the people from every quarter, surrounded the house. ⁵⚓And they called to Lot and said to him, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? ⚓Bring them out to us that we ⚓may know them carnally.”
⁶So ⚓Lot went out to them through the doorway, shut the door behind him, ⁷and said, “Please, my brethren, do not do so wickedly! ⁸⚓See now, I have two daughters who have not known a man; please, let me bring them out to you, and you may do to them as you wish; only do nothing to these men, ⚓since this is the reason they have come under the shadow of my roof.”
⁹And they said, “Stand back!” Then they said, “This one ⚓came in to stay here,⚓and he keeps acting as a judge; now we will deal worse with you than with them.” So they pressed hard against the man Lot, and came near to break down the door. ¹⁰But the men reached out their hands and pulled Lot into the house with them, and shut the door. ¹¹And they ⚓struck the men who were at the doorway of the house with blindness, both small and great, so that they became weary trying to find the door.

Sodom and Gomorrah Destroyed

¹²Then the men said to Lot, “Have you anyone else here? Son-in-law, your sons, your daughters, and whomever you have in the city—⚓take them out of this place! ¹³For we will destroy this place, because the ⚓outcry against them has grown great before the face of the Lord, and ⚓the Lord has sent us to destroy it.”
¹⁴So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, ⚓who had married his daughters, and said, ⚓“Get up, get out of this place; for the Lord will destroy this city!” ⚓But to his sons-in-law he seemed to be joking.
¹⁵When the morning dawned, the angels urged Lot to hurry, saying, ⚓“Arise, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you be consumed in the punishment of the city.” ¹⁶And while he lingered, the men ⚓took hold of his hand, his wife’s hand, and the hands of his two daughters, the ⚓Lord being merciful to him, ⚓and they brought him out and set him outside the city. ¹⁷So it came to pass, when they had brought them outside, that he said, ⚓“Escape for your life! ⚓Do not look behind you nor stay anywhere in the plain. Escape ⚓to the mountains, lest you be destroyed.”
¹⁸Then Lot said to them, “Please, ⚓no, my lords! ¹⁹Indeed now, your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have increased your mercy which you have shown me by saving my life; but I cannot escape to the mountains, lest some evil overtake me and I die. ²⁰See now, this city is near enough to flee to, and it is a little one; please let me escape there (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live.”
²¹And he said to him, “See, ⚓I have favored you concerning this thing also, in that I will not overthrow this city for which you have spoken. ²²Hurry, escape there. For ⚓I cannot do anything until you arrive there.”
Therefore ⚓the name of the city was called Zoar.
²³The sun had risen upon the earth when Lot entered Zoar. ²⁴Then the Lord rained ⚓brimstone and ⚓fire on Sodom and Gomorrah, from the Lord out of the heavens. ²⁵So He overthrew those cities, all the plain, all the inhabitants of the cities, and ⚓what grew on the ground.
²⁶But his wife looked back behind him, and she became ⚓a pillar of salt.
²⁷And Abraham went early in the morning to the place where ⚓he had stood before the Lord. ²⁸Then he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain; and he saw, and behold, ⚓the smoke of the land which went up like the smoke of a furnace. ²⁹And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God ⚓remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when He overthrew the cities in which Lot had dwelt.

The Descendants of Lot

³⁰Then Lot went up out of Zoar and ⚓dwelt in the mountains, and his two daughters were with him; for he was afraid to dwell in Zoar. And he and his two daughters dwelt in a cave. ³¹Now the firstborn said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no man on the earth ⚓to come in to us as is the custom of all the earth. ³²Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we ⚓may preserve the lineage of our father.” ³³So they made their father drink wine that night. And the firstborn went in and lay with her father, and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose.
³⁴It happened on the next day that the firstborn said to the younger, “Indeed I lay with my father last night; let us make him drink wine tonight also, and you go in and lie with him, that we may preserve the lineage of our father.” ³⁵Then they made their father drink wine that night also. And the younger arose and lay with him, and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose.
³⁶Thus both the daughters of Lot were with child by their father. ³⁷The firstborn bore a son and called his name Moab; ⚓he is the father of the Moabites to this day. ³⁸And the younger, she also bore a son and called his name Ben-Ammi; ⚓he is the father of the people of Ammon to this day.

¹Tối hôm ấy, hai thiên sứ đến cổng thành phố Sô-đôm, gặp Lót đang ngồi tại đó. Thấy khách đến, Lót đứng dậy nghênh đón vô cùng cung kính.⚓ ²Lót mời: "Thưa hai ngài, kính mời hai ngài đến nhà tôi nghỉ tạm đêm nay. Sáng mai, hai ngài có thể dậy sớm lên đường!" Hai vị khách đáp: "Cám ơn ông, tối nay chúng tôi ở ngoài phố cũng được!"
³Lót sốt sắng mời mọc nên rốt cuộc hai vị khách về nhà Lót. Lót hân hoan dọn tiệc lớn khoản đãi, có cả bánh không men mới nướng. ⁴Ăn xong, khách vừa chuẩn bị đi nghỉ, dân chúng Sô-đôm đã lũ lượt kéo nhau đến vây quanh nhà, đủ mặt ông già đến thanh thiếu niên thuộc khắp các phố phường. ⁵Chúng gọi tên Lót ra chất vấn: "Hai người khách vào nhà anh khi tối ở đâu? Đem họ ra cho chúng ta chơi!" ⁶Lót ra khỏi nhà, đóng sập cửa sau lưng, ⁷rồi van nài dân Sô-đôm: "Anh em ơi, đừng làm điều ác đó! ⁸Tôi xin đề nghị: tôi có hai con gái còn trinh trắng. Tôi sẽ dẫn chúng ra cho anh em muốn làm gì mặc ý. Nhưng xin đừng động đến hai ông khách của tôi, vì họ đã đến tá túc dưới mái nhà tôi!"
⁹Dân Sô-đôm gào thét: "Lui ra! Tên này đến đây kiều ngụ mà nay dám giở giọng quan tòa! Ta phải xử tội mày nặng hơn hai người kia!" Chúng xông lên, ép Lót vào cửa, làm cửa sắp bật tung. ¹⁰Nhưng hai khách đưa tay kéo Lót vào nhà, đóng sập cửa lại, ¹¹rồi làm cho đoàn dân Sô-đôm đang vây quanh bị mù mắt, kiếm cửa vào không được.
¹²Hai khách hỏi Lót: "Gia đình ông đủ mặt đây chưa? Hãy đem rể, con trai, con gái và người nhà ra khỏi đây lập tức! ¹³Chúng ta sắp tiêu diệt thành phố vì tiếng kêu ai oán đã thấu tai Chúa nên Ngài sai chúng ta xuống thực thi án phạt."
¹⁴Lót chạy ra báo tin cho hai rể hứa: "Hai con phải trốn đi ngay vì Chúa sắp tiêu diệt thành phố này!" Nhưng hai cậu tưởng ông gia bị loạn trí.
¹⁵Trời gần sáng, hai thiên sứ hối thúc Lót: "Nhanh lên, hãy đem vợ và hai con gái ra khỏi đây lập tức, kẻo bị tiêu diệt chung với thành phố này!" ¹⁶Thấy Lót chần chờ, hai thiên sứ nắm tay Lót và vợ con ông, kéo ngay ra khỏi thành phố, đưa đến chỗ an toàn, vì Chúa thương xót họ. ¹⁷“Chạy nhanh lên kẻo mất mạng - hai thiên sứ bảo - đừng ngoảnh lại sau lưng! Hãy trốn ngay lên núi. Đừng ở lại dưới đồng bằng, kẻo bị vạ lây!"
¹⁸Nhưng Lót lo ngại: "Hai ngài đã thương tình cứu mạng tôi nhưng tôi sợ chạy lên núi không kịp. ¹⁹Biến cố ấy xảy ra, tôi làm sao thoát chết? ²⁰Đàng kia có một thành phố nhỏ, không xa mấy. Xin cho tôi đến ẩn náu trong thành phố tí hon đó. Như thế, tôi mới mong bảo toàn mạng sống!"
²¹Thiên sứ đáp: "Được, ta nghe lời ông, không tiêu diệt thành phố nhỏ đó đâu. ²²Nhưng phải nhanh lên, vì ta không hành động được cho đến khi ông vào thành phố đó. (Từ ngày ấy, người ta gọi thành phố này là Xoa, nghĩa là "Thành nhỏ")
²³Mặt trời vừa mọc, Lót chạy đến nơi, vào thành Xoa. ²⁴Chúa lập tức cho mưa lửa và diêm sinh từ trời đổ xuống thiêu đốt Sô- đôm, Gô-mo luôn cả các thành phố, làng mạc trong đồng bàng. ²⁵Tất cả đều chết cháy: người, cây cối và súc vật. ²⁶Bà Lót lẽo đẽo theo sau chồng, ngoảnh nhìn lại cơ đồ sự nghiệp, bỗng chết đứng và biến thành tượng muối.
²⁷Áp-ra-ham dậy sớm, đi đến chỗ ông gặp Chúa⚓ hôm trước. ²⁸Ngước lên nhìn về phía Sô-đôm, Gô-mo và vùng đồng bằng, ông thấy khói cuồn cuộn tỏa lên trời đen kịt như khói lò lửa lớn.
²⁹Khi Chúa tiêu diệt các thành phố vùng đồng bằng, Ngài vẫn nhớ đến Áp-ra-ham và cứu Lót thoát khỏi cái chết rùng rợn của dân Sô-đôm. ⚓
³⁰Sợ ở Xoa không yên, Lót dẫn hai con gái lên núi, tạm trú trong một hang đá. ³¹Cô chị bảo cô em: "Cha đã già và bây giờ trai tráng đều chết hết, không còn ai lập gia đình với chị em mình nữa! ³²Nay chỉ còn một cách nối dõi tông đường: ta chuốc rượu mời cha uống cho say, rồi thay nhau ngủ với cha. ³³Đêm ấy, hai cô làm tiệc rượu cho cha uống say mèm, rồi cô chị vào ngủ với cha nhưng cha say quá, không biết động tĩnh gì.⚓ ³⁴Hôm sau, cô chị lại bảo em: "Này, hôm qua xong phiên của chị, đêm nay đến phiên em. Ta cứ chuốc rượu cho cha uống say, rồi em vào để nối dõi tông đường!" ³⁵Đêm ấy, hai cô lại làm tiệc rượu cho cha uống say túy lúy, rồi cô em vào ngủ với cha, nhưng cha say quá, cũng không biết động tĩnh gì⚓ ³⁶Vậy hai cô thụ thai do cha mình. ³⁷Cô lớn sinh một con trai, đặt tên Mô-áp (tổ phụ của dân Mô-áp ngày nay). ³⁸Cô em cũng sinh con trai, đặt tên Bên-Am-mi (tổ phụ của dân Am-môn ngày nay).
