Sodom’s Depravity

¹Now ⚓the two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and ⚓Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them, and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground. ²And he said, “Here now, my lords, please ⚓turn in to your servant’s house and spend the night, and ⚓wash your feet; then you may rise early and go on your way.”
And they said, ⚓“No, but we will spend the night in the open square.”
³But he insisted strongly; so they turned in to him and entered his house. ⚓Then he made them a feast, and baked ⚓unleavened bread, and they ate.
⁴Now before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both old and young, all the people from every quarter, surrounded the house. ⁵⚓And they called to Lot and said to him, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? ⚓Bring them out to us that we ⚓may know them carnally.”
⁶So ⚓Lot went out to them through the doorway, shut the door behind him, ⁷and said, “Please, my brethren, do not do so wickedly! ⁸⚓See now, I have two daughters who have not known a man; please, let me bring them out to you, and you may do to them as you wish; only do nothing to these men, ⚓since this is the reason they have come under the shadow of my roof.”
⁹And they said, “Stand back!” Then they said, “This one ⚓came in to stay here,⚓and he keeps acting as a judge; now we will deal worse with you than with them.” So they pressed hard against the man Lot, and came near to break down the door. ¹⁰But the men reached out their hands and pulled Lot into the house with them, and shut the door. ¹¹And they ⚓struck the men who were at the doorway of the house with blindness, both small and great, so that they became weary trying to find the door.

Sodom and Gomorrah Destroyed

¹²Then the men said to Lot, “Have you anyone else here? Son-in-law, your sons, your daughters, and whomever you have in the city—⚓take them out of this place! ¹³For we will destroy this place, because the ⚓outcry against them has grown great before the face of the Lord, and ⚓the Lord has sent us to destroy it.”
¹⁴So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, ⚓who had married his daughters, and said, ⚓“Get up, get out of this place; for the Lord will destroy this city!” ⚓But to his sons-in-law he seemed to be joking.
¹⁵When the morning dawned, the angels urged Lot to hurry, saying, ⚓“Arise, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you be consumed in the punishment of the city.” ¹⁶And while he lingered, the men ⚓took hold of his hand, his wife’s hand, and the hands of his two daughters, the ⚓Lord being merciful to him, ⚓and they brought him out and set him outside the city. ¹⁷So it came to pass, when they had brought them outside, that he said, ⚓“Escape for your life! ⚓Do not look behind you nor stay anywhere in the plain. Escape ⚓to the mountains, lest you be destroyed.”
¹⁸Then Lot said to them, “Please, ⚓no, my lords! ¹⁹Indeed now, your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have increased your mercy which you have shown me by saving my life; but I cannot escape to the mountains, lest some evil overtake me and I die. ²⁰See now, this city is near enough to flee to, and it is a little one; please let me escape there (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live.”
²¹And he said to him, “See, ⚓I have favored you concerning this thing also, in that I will not overthrow this city for which you have spoken. ²²Hurry, escape there. For ⚓I cannot do anything until you arrive there.”
Therefore ⚓the name of the city was called Zoar.
²³The sun had risen upon the earth when Lot entered Zoar. ²⁴Then the Lord rained ⚓brimstone and ⚓fire on Sodom and Gomorrah, from the Lord out of the heavens. ²⁵So He overthrew those cities, all the plain, all the inhabitants of the cities, and ⚓what grew on the ground.
²⁶But his wife looked back behind him, and she became ⚓a pillar of salt.
²⁷And Abraham went early in the morning to the place where ⚓he had stood before the Lord. ²⁸Then he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain; and he saw, and behold, ⚓the smoke of the land which went up like the smoke of a furnace. ²⁹And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God ⚓remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when He overthrew the cities in which Lot had dwelt.

The Descendants of Lot

³⁰Then Lot went up out of Zoar and ⚓dwelt in the mountains, and his two daughters were with him; for he was afraid to dwell in Zoar. And he and his two daughters dwelt in a cave. ³¹Now the firstborn said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no man on the earth ⚓to come in to us as is the custom of all the earth. ³²Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we ⚓may preserve the lineage of our father.” ³³So they made their father drink wine that night. And the firstborn went in and lay with her father, and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose.
³⁴It happened on the next day that the firstborn said to the younger, “Indeed I lay with my father last night; let us make him drink wine tonight also, and you go in and lie with him, that we may preserve the lineage of our father.” ³⁵Then they made their father drink wine that night also. And the younger arose and lay with him, and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose.
³⁶Thus both the daughters of Lot were with child by their father. ³⁷The firstborn bore a son and called his name Moab; ⚓he is the father of the Moabites to this day. ³⁸And the younger, she also bore a son and called his name Ben-Ammi; ⚓he is the father of the people of Ammon to this day.

Lót rời khỏi Xô-đôm

¹Hai thiên sứ đến Xô-đôm vào lúc chiều tối, khi Lót đang ngồi nơi cửa thành. Nhìn thấy họ, Lót đứng dậy đến trước mặt cúi mọp xuống đất để chào. ²Lót thưa, “Xin mời các ngài vào nhà tôi nghỉ đêm. Các ngài sẽ rửa chân rồi ngày mai hãy lên đường.”
Các thiên sứ đáp, “Không, đêm nay chúng tôi sẽ ngủ ngoài công viên thành phố.”
³Nhưng Lót năn nỉ quá nên họ bằng lòng vào nhà. Lót dọn bữa ăn cho họ. Ông nướng bánh mì không men, rồi họ ăn.
⁴Trước khi họ đi ngủ thì toàn thể đàn ông trong thành Xô-đôm, từ già đến trẻ, kéo đến bao vây nhà Lót. ⁵Họ gọi Lót, “Ê, hai người mới đến nhà anh đêm nay đâu? Mang họ ra đây để chúng ta ăn nằm với họ.”
⁶Lót bước ra ngoài gặp họ, rồi đóng cửa nhà sau lưng mình. ⁷Ông bảo, “Không được, anh em ơi! Chớ có làm việc ác nầy. ⁸Nầy, tôi có hai đứa con gái còn trinh trắng, chưa hề ngủ với đàn ông nào. Tôi sẽ đưa chúng nó cho các anh em. Các anh em làm gì cũng được, nhưng xin anh em chớ đụng đến hai người nầy. Họ đã đến nhà tôi. Tôi có bổn phận phải bảo vệ họ⚓.”
⁹Bọn đàn ông vây quanh nhà Lót đáp, “Đi chỗ khác!” Rồi chúng bảo nhau, “Thằng Lót nầy đến ở thành phố chúng ta như kiều dân mà bây giờ còn dám lên mặt dạy chúng ta nữa à?” Rồi chúng bảo Lót, “Chúng tôi sẽ xử với anh còn tệ hơn với hai người nầy.” Chúng bắt đầu xô ông và định xông tới phá cửa.
¹⁰Nhưng hai người ở nhà Lót mở cửa lôi ông vào, và đóng ập cửa lại. ¹¹Rồi hai người ấy khiến bọn người ở ngoài cửa bị mù, đến nỗi già trẻ đều lần mò mà không tìm được cửa.

Chạy thoát khỏi thành Xô-đôm

¹²Hai người hỏi Lót, “Anh còn có thân nhân nào nữa trong thành nầy không? Anh có con rể, con trai, con gái hay bà con nào nữa không? Nếu có thì bảo họ phải rời thành ngay, ¹³vì chúng tôi sắp tiêu diệt thành nầy. CHÚA đã nghe những việc độc ác trong thành cho nên Ngài sai chúng tôi đến để tiêu diệt thành.”
¹⁴Nên Lót đi ra nói với các con rể tương lai, đã hứa hôn với con gái mình rằng, “Hãy mau mau ra khỏi thành nầy, vì CHÚA sắp sửa tiêu diệt nó!” Nhưng họ tưởng Lót nói đùa.
¹⁵Sáng sớm hôm sau các thiên sứ hối thúc Lót. Họ bảo, “Nhanh lên. Mang vợ và hai con gái anh đi ra để các con không bị tiêu diệt khi ta trừng phạt thành nầy.”
¹⁶Nhưng Lót lừng khừng. Cho nên hai người ấy nắm tay Lót, cùng vợ và hai con gái ông, dẫn ra khỏi thành. CHÚA tỏ lòng thương xót đối với Lót và gia đình ông. ¹⁷Sau khi mang họ ra khỏi thành rồi một trong hai người bảo, “Hãy chạy cứu mạng mau lên! Chớ ngoái cổ nhìn và đừng dừng lại nơi nào trong thung lũng. Hãy chạy lên núi. Nếu không các con sẽ bị tiêu diệt đó.”
¹⁸Nhưng Lót năn nỉ một trong hai người đó, “Xin làm ơn đừng bắt tôi đi xa như thế! ¹⁹Các ngài đã nhân từ thương xót mà cứu mạng tôi, nhưng tôi không thể chạy lên núi kịp đâu. Thảm họa sẽ chụp bắt tôi, tôi sẽ mất mạng. ²⁰Kia có cái thành nhỏ không xa lắm. Xin cho tôi chạy đến đó. Vì là thành nhỏ, chắc tôi được an toàn.”
²¹Thiên sứ bảo Lót, “Được, ta cho phép anh. Ta sẽ không tiêu diệt thành đó. ²²Nhưng phải chạy nhanh đến đó vì chúng tôi không thể tiêu diệt Xô-đôm trước khi anh đã đến đó an toàn.” (Thành đó tên là Xoa vì nó nhỏ.)

Thành Xô-đôm và Gô-mô-rơ
bị tiêu diệt

²³Khi mặt trời vừa mọc thì Lót cũng vừa đến Xoa. ²⁴CHÚA giáng mưa lửa diêm sinh từ trời xuống trên Xô-đôm và Gô-mô-rơ, ²⁵đốt cháy tiêu hai thành đó. Ngài cũng tiêu diệt toàn thung lũng Giô-đanh, hủy diệt mọi người trong các thành đó, luôn cả cây cối vùng ấy.
²⁶Ngay lúc đó vợ Lót quay lại nhìn, nên bà liền biến thành cột muối.
²⁷Sáng sớm hôm sau Áp-ra-ham dậy, đi đến nơi ông đã đứng trước mặt CHÚA. ²⁸Nhìn về hướng Xô-đôm và Gô-mô-rơ và toàn thung lũng Giô-đanh, ông thấy khói từ dưới đất bốc lên giống như khói của lò lửa.
²⁹Khi Thượng Đế tiêu diệt các thành trong thung lũng thì Ngài nhớ đến Áp-ra-ham. Nên Ngài cứu mạng Lót, nhưng hủy diệt thành phố Lót sinh sống.

Lót và hai cô con gái

³⁰Lót sợ không dám ở lâu trong Xoa nên ông và hai cô con gái đi vào trong núi sống trong một cái hang. ³¹Một hôm cô chị bảo cô em, “Cha chúng ta nay đã già rồi. Ai trên đất nầy cũng có vợ có chồng nhưng quanh đây không có đàn ông nào để lấy chúng ta theo như lệ thường. ³²Thôi chúng ta hãy phục rượu cho cha say rồi đến nằm với cha. Chúng ta sẽ nhờ cha mà sinh con để lưu truyền nòi giống.”
³³Hôm đó hai cô phục rượu cho cha khiến ông say. Cô chị đến nằm với cha mình. Nhưng Lót chẳng biết lúc nào cô ta nằm xuống hay lúc nào cô ta dậy hết.
³⁴Hôm sau cô chị bảo cô em, “Hôm qua chị đã đến nằm với cha rồi. Đêm nay chúng ta hãy phục rượu cho cha say nữa, để em vào với cha. Làm như thế để nhờ cha mà lưu truyền nòi giống.” ³⁵Cho nên đêm đó hai cô lại phục rượu cho cha say nữa, rồi cô em vào nằm với cha mình. Lần nầy Lót cũng không hay lúc nào nàng nằm hay lúc nào nàng dậy hết.
³⁶Vậy hai cô con gái mang thai qua cha mình. ³⁷Cô chị sinh ra một con trai đặt tên là Mô-áp⚓. Nó là ông tổ của các dân Mô-áp mà hiện nay vẫn còn. ³⁸Cô em cũng sinh ra một con trai đặt tên là Bên-Am-mi⚓. Nó là ông tổ của dân Am-môn hiện nay vẫn còn đó.
