Sodom’s Depravity

¹Now ⚓the two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and ⚓Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them, and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground. ²And he said, “Here now, my lords, please ⚓turn in to your servant’s house and spend the night, and ⚓wash your feet; then you may rise early and go on your way.”
And they said, ⚓“No, but we will spend the night in the open square.”
³But he insisted strongly; so they turned in to him and entered his house. ⚓Then he made them a feast, and baked ⚓unleavened bread, and they ate.
⁴Now before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both old and young, all the people from every quarter, surrounded the house. ⁵⚓And they called to Lot and said to him, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? ⚓Bring them out to us that we ⚓may know them carnally.”
⁶So ⚓Lot went out to them through the doorway, shut the door behind him, ⁷and said, “Please, my brethren, do not do so wickedly! ⁸⚓See now, I have two daughters who have not known a man; please, let me bring them out to you, and you may do to them as you wish; only do nothing to these men, ⚓since this is the reason they have come under the shadow of my roof.”
⁹And they said, “Stand back!” Then they said, “This one ⚓came in to stay here,⚓and he keeps acting as a judge; now we will deal worse with you than with them.” So they pressed hard against the man Lot, and came near to break down the door. ¹⁰But the men reached out their hands and pulled Lot into the house with them, and shut the door. ¹¹And they ⚓struck the men who were at the doorway of the house with blindness, both small and great, so that they became weary trying to find the door.

Sodom and Gomorrah Destroyed

¹²Then the men said to Lot, “Have you anyone else here? Son-in-law, your sons, your daughters, and whomever you have in the city—⚓take them out of this place! ¹³For we will destroy this place, because the ⚓outcry against them has grown great before the face of the Lord, and ⚓the Lord has sent us to destroy it.”
¹⁴So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, ⚓who had married his daughters, and said, ⚓“Get up, get out of this place; for the Lord will destroy this city!” ⚓But to his sons-in-law he seemed to be joking.
¹⁵When the morning dawned, the angels urged Lot to hurry, saying, ⚓“Arise, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you be consumed in the punishment of the city.” ¹⁶And while he lingered, the men ⚓took hold of his hand, his wife’s hand, and the hands of his two daughters, the ⚓Lord being merciful to him, ⚓and they brought him out and set him outside the city. ¹⁷So it came to pass, when they had brought them outside, that he said, ⚓“Escape for your life! ⚓Do not look behind you nor stay anywhere in the plain. Escape ⚓to the mountains, lest you be destroyed.”
¹⁸Then Lot said to them, “Please, ⚓no, my lords! ¹⁹Indeed now, your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have increased your mercy which you have shown me by saving my life; but I cannot escape to the mountains, lest some evil overtake me and I die. ²⁰See now, this city is near enough to flee to, and it is a little one; please let me escape there (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live.”
²¹And he said to him, “See, ⚓I have favored you concerning this thing also, in that I will not overthrow this city for which you have spoken. ²²Hurry, escape there. For ⚓I cannot do anything until you arrive there.”
Therefore ⚓the name of the city was called Zoar.
²³The sun had risen upon the earth when Lot entered Zoar. ²⁴Then the Lord rained ⚓brimstone and ⚓fire on Sodom and Gomorrah, from the Lord out of the heavens. ²⁵So He overthrew those cities, all the plain, all the inhabitants of the cities, and ⚓what grew on the ground.
²⁶But his wife looked back behind him, and she became ⚓a pillar of salt.
²⁷And Abraham went early in the morning to the place where ⚓he had stood before the Lord. ²⁸Then he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain; and he saw, and behold, ⚓the smoke of the land which went up like the smoke of a furnace. ²⁹And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God ⚓remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when He overthrew the cities in which Lot had dwelt.

The Descendants of Lot

³⁰Then Lot went up out of Zoar and ⚓dwelt in the mountains, and his two daughters were with him; for he was afraid to dwell in Zoar. And he and his two daughters dwelt in a cave. ³¹Now the firstborn said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no man on the earth ⚓to come in to us as is the custom of all the earth. ³²Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we ⚓may preserve the lineage of our father.” ³³So they made their father drink wine that night. And the firstborn went in and lay with her father, and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose.
³⁴It happened on the next day that the firstborn said to the younger, “Indeed I lay with my father last night; let us make him drink wine tonight also, and you go in and lie with him, that we may preserve the lineage of our father.” ³⁵Then they made their father drink wine that night also. And the younger arose and lay with him, and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose.
³⁶Thus both the daughters of Lot were with child by their father. ³⁷The firstborn bore a son and called his name Moab; ⚓he is the father of the Moabites to this day. ³⁸And the younger, she also bore a son and called his name Ben-Ammi; ⚓he is the father of the people of Ammon to this day.

¹Chiều tối, hai thiên sứ đến thành Sô-đôm, Lót đang ngồi tại cổng thành. Thấy khách đến, Lót đứng dậy nghênh đón, ông cúi lạy mặt sát đất. ²Lót mời: “Thưa hai ngài, kính mời hai ngài đến nhà tôi rửa chân nghỉ tạm đêm nay. Sáng mai, hai ngài có thể dậy sớm lên đường!” Hai vị khách đáp:
“Không, tối nay chúng tôi sẽ ở ngoài đường!”
³Lót hết sức nài nỉ nên hai vị khách đi với ông về nhà. Lót dọn bữa cho họ, ông nướng bánh không men và họ ăn. ⁴Trước khi họ đi ngủ, những người đàn ông Sô-đôm từ trẻ đến già khắp trong thành phố đến vây quanh nhà. ⁵Chúng gọi Lót ra hỏi: “Hai người khách vào nhà anh khi tối ở đâu? Đem họ ra cho chúng ta ngủ với họ!”
⁶Lót ra khỏi nhà, đóng sập cửa sau lưng, ⁷rồi van nài họ: “Anh em ơi, đừng làm điều ác đó! ⁸Đây tôi có hai con gái còn trinh, để tôi dẫn chúng ra cho anh em muốn làm gì mặc ý. Nhưng xin đừng động đến hai ông khách của tôi, vì họ đến tá túc dưới mái nhà tôi!”
⁹Nhưng họ đáp lại: “Tránh ra! Tên này đến kiều ngụ mà nay dám giở giọng quan tòa! Ta phải xử tội mày nặng hơn hai người kia.” Chúng xông lên, ép mạnh Lót, tiến gần cửa để đập cửa ra.
¹⁰Nhưng hai khách đưa tay kéo Lót vào nhà, đóng sập cửa lại, ¹¹rồi làm cho đám đàn ông đang vây quanh cửa, từ trẻ đến già đều bị mù mắt, kiếm cửa vào không được.
¹²Hai khách hỏi Lót: “Gia đình ngươi còn có ai khác nữa không? Con rể, con trai, con gái và người nào khác trong thành thuộc về ngươi, hãy đem hết họ ra khỏi đây. ¹³Chúng ta sắp tiêu diệt thành vì tiếng kêu oán đã thấu đến CHÚA nên Ngài sai chúng ta xuống hủy diệt nó.”
¹⁴Lót chạy ra nói với các rể hứa: “Hãy đứng dậy, rời bỏ chỗ này ngay vì CHÚA sắp tiêu diệt thành này!” Nhưng hai cậu rể tưởng ông nói đùa.
¹⁵Trời gần sáng, hai thiên sứ hối thúc Lót: “Hãy dậy đem vợ và hai con gái ra khỏi đây, kẻo bị tiêu diệt chung với thành này!”
¹⁶Thấy Lót chần chờ, hai thiên sứ nắm tay Lót, vợ và hai con gái kéo ngay ra khỏi thành, vì Chúa thương xót họ. ¹⁷Khi đem ra cách khỏi thành, một vị thiên sứ bảo họ: “Hãy chạy trốn để cứu mạng, đừng ngoảnh lại sau lưng! Đừng dừng lại ở bất cứ chỗ nào dưới đồng bằng, hãy trốn ngay lên núi, kẻo bị tiêu diệt.”
¹⁸Nhưng Lót nói với họ: ¹⁹“Thưa các chúa, kẻ tôi tớ này đã được ơn dưới mắt các chúa, và các ngài đã tỏ sự nhân từ tha mạng cho con, nhưng con sợ chạy trốn lên núi không kịp, tai nạn ập đến và con chết mất. ²⁰Kìa, đàng kia có một thành nhỏ, không xa mấy. Xin cho con đến ẩn náu trong thành đó, ấy là một thành nhỏ. Như thế, con mới được bảo toàn mạng sống!”
²¹Thiên sứ đáp: “Được, ta chấp thuận lời yêu cầu của con, không tiêu diệt thành nhỏ đó. ²²Chạy trốn vào đó nhanh lên, vì ta không hành động được cho đến khi con vào thành đó.” Do đó thành này được người ta gọi là Xoa, nghĩa là “Thành nhỏ”.
²³Mặt trời vừa mọc, Lót chạy đến nơi, vào thành Xoa. ²⁴CHÚA lập tức cho mưa diêm sinh và lửa từ trời đổ xuống thiêu đốt Sô-đôm, Gô-mô-rơ. ²⁵Vậy Ngài tiêu hủy các thành và toàn thể đồng bằng luôn cả mọi người sống trong các thành và cây cỏ trên đất. ²⁶Nhưng vợ Lót ngoảnh nhìn lại phía sau và bị biến thành tượng muối.
²⁷Sáng hôm sau, Áp-ra-ham thức dậy đi ra chỗ ông đứng với CHÚA hôm qua. ²⁸Ông nhìn xuống hướng Sô-đôm, Gô-mô-rơ và toàn vùng đồng bằng, ông thấy khói bốc lên như khói của lò lửa lớn.
²⁹Khi Đức Chúa Trời tiêu diệt các thành trong vùng đồng bằng, Đức Chúa Trời nhớ đến Áp-ra-ham và cứu Lót thoát khỏi họa thiêu hủy cùng với các thành mà Lót đã ở.
³⁰Sợ ở Xoa, Lót dẫn hai con gái lên ở trên núi, trú trong một hang đá. ³¹Bấy giờ cô chị bảo cô em: “Cha đã già, trong cả vùng không còn đàn ông để ăn ở với chúng ta như phong tục khắp nơi trên đất. ³²Chúng ta hãy phục rượu cho cha say rồi đến nằm với cha, để qua cha chúng ta bảo tồn dòng giống gia đình mình.”
³³Đêm đó, hai cô phục rượu cho cha say, rồi cô chị vào ngủ với cha, người cha chẳng biết lúc nào nàng nằm lúc nào nàng dậy.
³⁴Hôm sau, cô chị lại bảo cô em: “Này, đêm qua chị đã ngủ với cha. Tối nay, chúng ta cũng hãy phục rượu cho cha uống say, rồi em vào nằm với cha để bảo tồn dòng giống gia đình.” ³⁵Đêm ấy, hai cô phục rượu cho cha say, rồi cô em vào ngủ với cha, nhưng cha chẳng biết lúc nào nàng vào nằm với mình và lúc nào nàng dậy.
³⁶Vậy hai con gái của Lót thụ thai do cha mình. ³⁷Cô chị sinh một trai, đặt tên là Mô-áp, tổ phụ của dân Mô-áp ngày nay. ³⁸Cô em cũng sinh con trai, đặt tên Bên-am-mi tổ phụ của dân Am-môn ngày nay.
