Đa-vít qua đời

¹Lúc Đa-vít gần qua đời thì ông trối với Sô-lô-môn con trai mình. ²Đa-vít bảo, “Giờ qua đời của cha đã gần kề. Hãy lãnh đạo cho tốt và mạnh mẽ. ³Hãy vâng lời CHÚA là Thượng Đế con. Hãy vâng theo các điều đòi hỏi, mệnh lệnh, luật lệ, và qui tắc của Ngài đã ghi trong các lời giáo huấn của Mô-se. Nếu con làm những như thế thì bất cứ việc gì con làm hay con đi đâu thì con cũng sẽ thành công. ⁴Và nếu con vâng lời CHÚA, Ngài sẽ giữ lời hứa Ngài lập cùng ta. Ngài hứa: Nếu dòng dõi ngươi sống theo như ta dặn và hoàn toàn tin cậy ta, thì trong gia đình ngươi lúc nào cũng có người làm vua trên Ít-ra-en.
⁵Ngoài ra, con đừng quên điều Giô-áp, con Xê-ru-gia làm cho cha. Nó giết hai vị chỉ huy của quân đội Ít-ra-en: Áp-ne, con Nê-rơ, và A-ma-sa, con Gie-thê. Nó hành động như thể nó và những người ấy đang chiến đấu với nhau nhưng thật ra là đang hòa bình. Nó là tên khát máu, vấy máu đầy mình⚓. ⁶Hãy trừng phạt nó theo cách mà con cho là khôn ngoan nhất, đừng để nó chết già bình yên.
⁷Hãy tỏ lòng trung kiên đối với con cháu Bát-xi-lai ở Ghi-lê-át, cho chúng nó ăn chung bàn với con. Họ đã tiếp đón ta khi ta chạy trốn khỏi Áp-xa-lôm, anh con.
⁸Và hãy nhớ rằng Si-mê-i, con Ghê-ra, người Bên-gia-min, từ Ba-hu-rim đang ở đây với con. Nó chửi rủa ta trong ngày ta chạy đến Ma-ha-na-im. Nhưng khi nó đến đón ta ở sông Giô-đanh, ta đã hứa với nó trước mặt CHÚA rằng, ‘Si-mê-i, ta sẽ không giết ngươi.’ ⁹Nhưng con chớ nên để nó thoát khỏi trừng phạt. Con là người khôn ngoan, biết đối xử với nó ra sao, nhưng con phải xử tử nó.”
¹⁰Rồi Đa-vít qua đời và được chôn chung với tổ tiên mình trong thành Đa-vít. ¹¹Ông cai trị trên Giê-ru-sa-lem bốn mươi năm: bảy năm ở Hếp-rôn, và ba mươi ba năm ở Giê-ru-sa-lem.

Sô-lô-môn lên ngôi vua cầm quyền

¹²Sô-lô-môn lên ngôi vua kế vị Đa-vít, cha mình và củng cố quyền hành mình trong nước.
¹³Lúc đó A-đô-ni-gia, con Ha-ghít tìm đến Bát-sê-ba, mẹ Sô-lô-môn. Bát-sê-ba hỏi, “Ngươi đến trong thiện chí phải không?”
A-đô-ni-gia đáp, “Phải. Đây là cuộc viếng thăm thiện chí,” ¹⁴“Tôi có một điều muốn nói cùng bà.”
Bà đáp, “Nói đi.”
¹⁵A-đô-ni-gia nói “Bà nhớ trước đây nước thuộc về tôi. Tất cả dân Ít-ra-en nhìn nhận tôi làm vua họ nhưng tình thế thay đổi. Bây giờ em tôi lên ngôi vua vì CHÚA chọn lựa nó. ¹⁶Nay tôi có một điều muốn xin bà; xin bà đừng từ chối.”
Bát-sê-ba hỏi, “Ngươi muốn điều gì?”
¹⁷A-đô-ni-gia tiếp “Tôi biết vua Sô-lô-môn sẽ làm bất cứ điều gì bà yêu cầu. Vậy xin bà xin nhà vua cho phép tôi cưới A-bi-sác người Su-nam làm vợ.”
¹⁸Bà đáp, “Được. Ta sẽ nói với vua giùm cho ngươi.”
¹⁹Vậy Bát-sê-ba vào nói chuyện với Sô-lô-môn giùm cho A-đô-ni-gia. Khi Sô-lô-môn thấy bà liền đứng lên khỏi ngai, cúi chào rồi ngồi xuống. Ông bảo đầy tớ mang một cái ngai khác cho bà ngồi. Rồi bà ngồi kế bên phải vua.
²⁰Bát-sê-ba nói, “Mẹ có một điều nhỏ muốn xin con, xin con đừng từ chối.”
Vua đáp, “Mẹ cứ nói. Con không từ chối đâu.”
²¹Bà liền nói, “Con hãy cho A-bi-sác, người Su-nam làm vợ A-đô-ni-gia, anh con.”
²²Vua Sô-lô-môn trả lời, “Tại sao mẹ xin A-bi-sác cho anh ấy? Sao mẹ không xin cho anh ấy làm vua luôn vì là anh con? A-bia-tha thầy tế lễ và Giô-áp, con Xê-ru-gia chắc sẽ ủng hộ chuyện đó lắm!”
²³Vua Sô-lô-môn liền thề trong danh CHÚA rằng, “Nguyện Thượng Đế phạt con nặng nề nếu hắn không chết vì chuyện nầy! ²⁴Nhân danh CHÚA là Đấng đã ban cho con ngôi Đa-vít, cha con, và Đấng đã giữ lời hứa Ngài ban nước cho con và dòng dõi con, nội ngày nay A-đô-ni-gia sẽ chết!”
²⁵Rồi vua Sô-lô-môn truyền lệnh cho Bê-na-gia, con Giê-hô-gia-đa. Người liền đi giết A-đô-ni-gia.
²⁶Vua Sô-lô-môn bảo thầy tế lễ A-bia-tha, “Ta đáng lẽ cũng giết ngươi luôn nhưng ta cho phép ngươi trở về ruộng nương của mình ở A-na-thốt. Ta chưa giết ngươi lúc nầy vì ngươi đã giúp mang Rương của CHÚA là Thượng Đế trong khi đi với Đa-vít cha ta. Và ta biết ngươi đã chia sẻ sướng khổ với cha ta.” ²⁷Sô-lô-môn liền cách chức tế lễ của CHÚA khỏi A-bia-tha. Điều nầy xảy ra như lời CHÚA đã phán, khi Ngài bảo trước tại Si-lô về thầy tế lễ Hê-li và dòng dõi ông⚓.
²⁸Khi Giô-áp nghe những chuyện xảy ra thì đâm ra lo sợ. Ông đã ủng hộ A-đô-ni-gia, nhưng không ủng hộ Áp-xa-lôm. Cho nên Giô-áp chạy đến Lều của CHÚA và nắm các góc bàn thờ. ²⁹Có người mách với vua Sô-lô-môn là Giô-áp đã chạy đến Lều của CHÚA và đứng cạnh bàn thờ. Sô-lô-môn liền ra lệnh cho Bê-na-gia đi giết ông ta.
³⁰Bê-na-gia đi vào Lều của CHÚA và bảo Giô-áp, “Vua nói, ‘Hãy đi ra!’”
Nhưng Giô-áp trả lời, “Không. Ta muốn chết ở đây.”
Cho nên Bê-na-gia về trình với vua điều Giô-áp nói. ³¹Vua liền ra lệnh cho Bê-na-gia, “Thì cứ làm như hắn nói! Giết hắn ở đó và chôn hắn đi. Như thế, ta và gia đình ta sẽ sạch tội lỗi của Giô-áp, người đã giết những kẻ vô tội. ³²Hắn đã giết hai người tốt hơn hắn: Áp-ne, con Nê-rơ, chỉ huy quân đội Ít-ra-en, và A-ma-sa, con Gie-thê, chỉ huy quân đội Giu-đa mà cha ta không hay biết gì. Cho nên CHÚA sẽ báo trả nó về những cái chết đó. ³³Giô-áp và gia đình nó sẽ mãi mãi mang tội về những cái chết đó, nhưng Đa-vít, dòng dõi người, và ngôi người sẽ được CHÚA giữ an nhiên đời đời.”
³⁴Vậy Bê-na-gia, con Giê-hô-gia-đa giết Giô-áp, người ta chôn ông gần nhà ông trong sa mạc. ³⁵Vua cử Bê-na-gia, con Giê-hô-gia-đa làm chỉ huy quân đội thay Giô-áp. Vua cũng cử Xa-đốc làm thầy tế lễ thượng phẩm thế thay A-bia-tha. ³⁶Sau đó vua cho gọi Si-mê-i. Sô-lô-môn bảo hắn, “Hãy cất nhà tại Giê-ru-sa-lem và ở đó, không được ra khỏi thành. ³⁷Ngày nào ngươi rời thành và băng qua thung lũng Kít-rôn thì sẽ có người giết ngươi, đó là lỗi của ngươi.”
³⁸Si-mê-i thưa với vua, “Tôi đồng ý với điều bệ hạ dặn. Tôi sẽ làm điều gì vua chúa tôi biểu.” Vậy Si-mê-i ở Giê-ru-sa-lem trong thời gian khá lâu. ³⁹Nhưng ba năm sau có hai đứa nô lệ của Si-mê-i chạy trốn đến A-kích, vua của Gát, con Ma-a-ca. Si-mê-i nghe tin mấy đứa nô lệ mình ở Gát, ⁴⁰nên thắng yên cương lừa và đi đến A-kích ở Gát để tìm chúng nó rồi mang chúng về từ Gát.
⁴¹Có người thuật cho Sô-lô-môn hay rằng Si-mê-i đã ra khỏi Giê-ru-sa-lem đi đến Gát và trở về. ⁴²Sô-lô-môn liền cho gọi Si-mê-i lại hỏi, “Ta đã bắt ngươi hứa trong danh CHÚA là không được rời khỏi Giê-ru-sa-lem. Ta đã cảnh cáo ngươi rằng hễ ngươi đi nơi nào khác ngươi sẽ chết và ngươi đã đồng ý điều ta dặn. ⁴³Tại sao ngươi vi phạm lời hứa với CHÚA và bất tuân mệnh lệnh ta?” ⁴⁴Vua tiếp, “Ngươi biết những điều quấy ngươi làm cho Đa-vít, cha ta, cho nên bây giờ CHÚA sẽ phạt ngươi vì những lỗi lầm đó. ⁴⁵Nhưng CHÚA sẽ ban phúc cho ta và ngôi của Đa-vít sẽ an toàn đời đời trước mặt Ngài.”
⁴⁶Vua liền ra lệnh cho Bê-na-gia giết Si-mê-i. Ông liền thi hành. Thế là Sô-lô-môn hoàn toàn nắm quyền trong nước.

David’s Instructions to Solomon

¹Now ⚓the days of David drew near that he should die, and he charged Solomon his son, saying: ²⚓“I go the way of all the earth; ⚓be strong, therefore, and prove yourself a man. ³And keep the charge of the Lord your God: to walk in His ways, to keep His statutes, His commandments, His judgments, and His testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, that you may ⚓prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn; ⁴that the Lord may ⚓fulfill His word which He spoke concerning me, saying, ⚓‘If your sons take heed to their way, to ⚓walk before Me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul,’ He said, ⚓‘you shall not lack a man on the throne of Israel.’
⁵“Moreover you know also what Joab the son of Zeruiah ⚓did to me, and what he did to the two commanders of the armies of Israel, to ⚓Abner the son of Ner and ⚓Amasa the son of Jether, whom he killed. And he shed the blood of war in peacetime, and put the blood of war on his belt that was around his waist, and on his sandals that were on his feet. ⁶Therefore do ⚓according to your wisdom, and do not let his gray hair go down to the grave in peace.
⁷“But show kindness to the sons of ⚓Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be among those who ⚓eat at your table, for so ⚓they came to me when I fled from Absalom your brother.
⁸“And see, you have with you ⚓Shimei the son of Gera, a Benjamite from Bahurim, who cursed me with a malicious curse in the day when I went to Mahanaim. But ⚓he came down to meet me at the Jordan, and ⚓I swore to him by the Lord, saying, ‘I will not put you to death with the sword.’ ⁹Now therefore, ⚓do not hold him guiltless, for you are a wise man and know what you ought to do to him; but ⚓bring his gray hair down to the grave with blood.”

Death of David

¹⁰So ⚓David rested with his fathers, and was buried in ⚓the City of David. ¹¹The period that David ⚓reigned over Israel was forty years; seven years he reigned in Hebron, and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty-three years. ¹²⚓Then Solomon sat on the throne of his father David; and his kingdom was ⚓firmly established.

Solomon Executes Adonijah

¹³Now Adonijah the son of Haggith came to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon. So she said, ⚓“Do you come peaceably?”
And he said, “Peaceably.” ¹⁴Moreover he said, “I have something to say to you.”
And she said, “Say it.”
¹⁵Then he said, “You know that the kingdom was ⚓mine, and all Israel had set their expectations on me, that I should reign. However, the kingdom has been turned over, and has become my brother’s; for ⚓it was his from the Lord. ¹⁶Now I ask one petition of you; do not deny me.”
And she said to him, “Say it.”
¹⁷Then he said, “Please speak to King Solomon, for he will not refuse you, that he may give me ⚓Abishag the Shunammite as wife.”
¹⁸So Bathsheba said, “Very well, I will speak for you to the king.”
¹⁹Bathsheba therefore went to King Solomon, to speak to him for Adonijah. And the king rose up to meet her and ⚓bowed down to her, and sat down on his throne and had a throne set for the king’s mother; ⚓so she sat at his right hand. ²⁰Then she said, “I desire one small petition of you; do not refuse me.”
And the king said to her, “Ask it, my mother, for I will not refuse you.”
²¹So she said, “Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to Adonijah your brother as wife.”
²²And King Solomon answered and said to his mother, “Now why do you ask Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? Ask for him the kingdom also—for he is my ⚓older brother—for him, and for ⚓Abiathar the priest, and for Joab the son of Zeruiah.” ²³Then King Solomon swore by the Lord, saying, ⚓“May God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah has not spoken this word against his own life! ²⁴Now therefore, as the Lord lives, who has confirmed me and set me on the throne of David my father, and who has established a house for me, as He ⚓promised, Adonijah shall be put to death today!”
²⁵So King Solomon sent by the hand of ⚓Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he struck him down, and he died.

Abiathar Exiled, Joab Executed

²⁶And to Abiathar the priest the king said, “Go to ⚓Anathoth, to your own fields, for you are deserving of death; but I will not put you to death at this time, ⚓because you carried the ark of the Lord God before my father David, and because you were afflicted every time my father was afflicted.” ²⁷So Solomon removed Abiathar from being priest to the Lord, that he might ⚓fulfill the word of the Lord which He spoke concerning the house of Eli at Shiloh.
²⁸Then news came to Joab, for Joab ⚓had defected to Adonijah, though he had not defected to Absalom. So Joab fled to the tabernacle of the Lord, and ⚓took hold of the horns of the altar. ²⁹And King Solomon was told, “Joab has fled to the tabernacle of the Lord; there he is, by the altar.” Then Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, saying, “Go, ⚓strike him down.” ³⁰So Benaiah went to the tabernacle of the Lord, and said to him, “Thus says the king, ⚓‘Come out!’ ”
And he said, “No, but I will die here.” And Benaiah brought back word to the king, saying, “Thus said Joab, and thus he answered me.”
³¹Then the king said to him, ⚓“Do as he has said, and strike him down and bury him, ⚓that you may take away from me and from the house of my father the innocent blood which Joab shed. ³²So the Lord⚓will return his blood on his head, because he struck down two men more righteous ⚓and better than he, and killed them with the sword—⚓Abner the son of Ner, the commander of the army of Israel, and ⚓Amasa the son of Jether, the commander of the army of Judah—though my father David did not know it. ³³Their blood shall therefore return upon the head of Joab and ⚓upon the head of his descendants forever. ⚓But upon David and his descendants, upon his house and his throne, there shall be peace forever from the Lord.”
³⁴So Benaiah the son of Jehoiada went up and struck and killed him; and he was buried in his own house in the wilderness. ³⁵The king put Benaiah the son of Jehoiada in his place over the army, and the king put ⚓Zadok the priest in the place of ⚓Abiathar.

Shimei Executed

³⁶Then the king sent and called for ⚓Shimei, and said to him, “Build yourself a house in Jerusalem and dwell there, and do not go out from there anywhere. ³⁷For it shall be, on the day you go out and cross ⚓the Brook Kidron, know for certain you shall surely die; ⚓your blood shall be on your own head.”
³⁸And Shimei said to the king, “The saying is good. As my lord the king has said, so your servant will do.” So Shimei dwelt in Jerusalem many days.
³⁹Now it happened at the end of three years, that two slaves of Shimei ran away to ⚓Achish the son of Maachah, king of Gath. And they told Shimei, saying, “Look, your slaves are in Gath!” ⁴⁰So Shimei arose, saddled his donkey, and went to Achish at Gath to seek his slaves. And Shimei went and brought his slaves from Gath. ⁴¹And Solomon was told that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath and had come back. ⁴²Then the king sent and called for Shimei, and said to him, “Did I not make you swear by the Lord, and warn you, saying, ‘Know for certain that on the day you go out and travel anywhere, you shall surely die’? And you said to me, ‘The word I have heard is good.’ ⁴³Why then have you not kept the oath of the Lord and the commandment that I gave you?” ⁴⁴The king said moreover to Shimei, “You know, as your heart acknowledges, ⚓all the wickedness that you did to my father David; therefore the Lord will ⚓return your wickedness on your own head. ⁴⁵But King Solomon shall be blessed, and ⚓the throne of David shall be established before the Lord forever.”
⁴⁶So the king commanded Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he went out and struck him down, and he died. Thus the ⚓kingdom was established in the hand of Solomon.
