The Rebellion of Sheba

¹And there happened to be there a rebel, whose name was Sheba the son of Bichri, a Benjamite. And he blew a trumpet, and said:
⚓“We have no share in David,
Nor do we have inheritance in the son of Jesse;
⚓Every man to his tents, O Israel!”
²So every man of Israel deserted David, and followed Sheba the son of Bichri. But the ⚓men of Judah, from the Jordan as far as Jerusalem, remained loyal to their king.
³Now David came to his house at Jerusalem. And the king took the ten women, ⚓his concubines whom he had left to keep the house, and put them in seclusion and supported them, but did not go in to them. So they were shut up to the day of their death, living in widowhood.
⁴And the king said to Amasa, ⚓“Assemble the men of Judah for me within three days, and be present here yourself.” ⁵So Amasa went to assemble the men of Judah. But he delayed longer than the set time which David had appointed him. ⁶And David said to ⚓Abishai, “Now Sheba the son of Bichri will do us more harm than Absalom. Take ⚓your lord’s servants and pursue him, lest he find for himself fortified cities, and escape us.” ⁷So Joab’s men, with the ⚓Cherethites, the Pelethites, and ⚓all the mighty men, went out after him. And they went out of Jerusalem to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri. ⁸When they were at the large stone which is in Gibeon, Amasa came before them. Now Joab was dressed in battle armor; on it was a belt with a sword fastened in its sheath at his hips; and as he was going forward, it fell out. ⁹Then Joab said to Amasa, “Are you in health, my brother?” ⚓And Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him. ¹⁰But Amasa did not notice the sword that was in Joab’s hand. And ⚓he struck him with it ⚓in the stomach, and his entrails poured out on the ground; and he did not strike him again. Thus he died.
Then Joab and Abishai his brother pursued Sheba the son of Bichri. ¹¹Meanwhile one of Joab’s men stood near Amasa, and said, “Whoever favors Joab and whoever is for David—follow Joab!” ¹²But Amasa wallowed in his blood in the middle of the highway. And when the man saw that all the people stood still, he moved Amasa from the highway to the field and threw a garment over him, when he saw that everyone who came upon him halted. ¹³When he was removed from the highway, all the people went on after Joab to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri.
¹⁴And he went through all the tribes of Israel to ⚓Abel and Beth Maachah and all the Berites. So they were gathered together and also went after Sheba. ¹⁵Then they came and besieged him in Abel of Beth Maachah; and they ⚓cast up a siege mound against the city, and it stood by the rampart. And all the people who were with Joab battered the wall to throw it down.
¹⁶Then a wise woman cried out from the city, “Hear, hear! Please say to Joab, ‘Come nearby, that I may speak with you.’ ” ¹⁷When he had come near to her, the woman said, “Are you Joab?”
He answered, “I am.”
Then she said to him, “Hear the words of your maidservant.”
And he answered, “I am listening.”
¹⁸So she spoke, saying, “They used to talk in former times, saying, ‘They shall surely seek guidance at Abel,’ and so they would end disputes. ¹⁹I am among the peaceable and faithful in Israel. You seek to destroy a city and a mother in Israel. Why would you swallow up ⚓the inheritance of the Lord?”
²⁰And Joab answered and said, “Far be it, far be it from me, that I should swallow up or destroy! ²¹That is not so. But a man from the mountains of Ephraim, Sheba the son of Bichri by name, has raised his hand against the king, against David. Deliver him only, and I will depart from the city.”
So the woman said to Joab, “Watch, his head will be thrown to you over the wall.” ²²Then the woman ⚓in her wisdom went to all the people. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri, and threw it out to Joab. Then he blew a trumpet, and they withdrew from the city, every man to his tent. So Joab returned to the king at Jerusalem.

David’s Government Officers

²³And ⚓Joab was over all the army of Israel; Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites; ²⁴Adoram was⚓in charge of revenue; ⚓Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder; ²⁵Sheva was scribe; ⚓Zadok and Abiathar were the priests; ²⁶⚓and Ira the Jairite was a chief minister under David.

Sê-ba xúi giục Ít-ra-en ly khai

¹Tình cờ có một kẻ gây rối tên Sê-ba, con trai Bích-ri từ chi tộc Bên-gia-min có mặt ở đó. Hắn thổi kèn và tuyên bố:
“Chúng ta không có phần gì với Đa-vít!
Chúng ta không liên quan gì đến con trai Gie-sê!
Hỡi dân Ít-ra-en, hãy trở về nhà mình!”
²Vậy toàn dân Ít-ra-en⚓ ly khai Đa-vít và đi theo Sê-ba, con trai Bích-ri. Nhưng người Giu-đa theo Đa-vít suốt từ sông Giô-đanh cho đến Giê-ru-sa-lem.
³Đa-vít trở về cung vua ở Giê-ru-sa-lem. Ông đã để lại mười cung nữ để chăm sóc cung vua. Sau khi về, ông bắt tất cả phải ở trong cung cấm⚓. Ông cho họ ăn uống nhưng không ăn nằm với họ nữa. Cho nên họ sống như góa phụ cho đến ngày qua đời.
⁴Vua nói với A-ma-sa, “Hãy bảo người Giu-đa ba ngày nữa trình diện ta, ngươi cũng phải có mặt ở đây.”
⁵Vậy A-ma-sa đi ra tập họp người Giu-đa nhưng làm chậm chạp hơn thời hạn vua dặn.

Đa-vít ra lệnh cho A-bi-sai giết Sê-ba

⁶Đa-vít bảo A-bi-sai, “Sê-ba, con trai Bích-ri còn nguy hiểm cho chúng ta hơn cả Áp-xa-lôm nữa. Hãy mang quân lính ta đuổi theo nó trước khi nó tìm được các thành có vách kiên cố và trốn thoát khỏi tay chúng ta.”
⁷Vậy những quân sĩ của Giô-áp, người Kê-rê-thít, và Phê-rê-thít⚓, cùng tất cả binh sĩ đều đi theo A-bi-sai. Họ từ Giê-ru-sa-lem đổ ra rượt theo Sê-ba, con Bích-ri.

Giô-áp giết A-ma-sa

⁸Khi Giô-áp và đạo quân đến tảng đá lớn ở Ghi-bê-ôn thì A-ma-sa đi ra gặp họ. Giô-áp đang mặc quân phục, bên hông mang cái đai xỏ cây gươm trong vỏ. Khi Giô-áp bước tới thì gươm tuột ra khỏi vỏ. ⁹Giô-áp hỏi A-ma-sa, “Anh ơi, mọi việc đều tốt đẹp cả chứ?”
Rồi ông giơ tay phải ra nắm râu A-ma-sa để hôn. ¹⁰A-ma-sa không coi chừng cây giáo trong tay Giô-áp. Giô-áp liền đâm vào bụng A-ma-sa khiến ruột đổ ra trên đất. Giô-áp không phải đâm lại lần thứ nhì vì A-ma-sa chết rồi.

Quân của Đa-vít truy lùng Sê-ba

Sau đó Giô-áp và em mình là A-bi-sai rượt theo Sê-ba, con Bích-ri. ¹¹Một trong các chàng thanh niên theo Giô-áp đứng bên cạnh xác A-ma-sa bảo, “Ai theo phe Giô-áp và Đa-vít hãy đi theo Giô-áp!”
¹²A-ma-sa đang nằm chết trong vũng máu giữa đường. Khi chàng thanh niên thấy ai nấy cũng dừng lại nhìn xác thì lôi xác ra khỏi đường, để nằm trong một đám ruộng, rồi lấy một miếng vải phủ lên. ¹³Sau khi xác A-ma-sa được kéo ra khỏi đường cái thì tất cả người đi theo Giô-áp rượt đuổi Sê-ba, con Bích-ri.

Sê-ba chạy trốn đến A-bên Bết-Ma-a-ca

¹⁴Sê-ba đi suốt hết các chi tộc Ít-ra-en cho đến A-bên Bết-Ma-a-ca. Tất cả dân Bê-ri⚓ đều họp lại đi theo hắn.
¹⁵Giô-áp và quân lính đi theo đến bao vây A-bên Bết-Ma-a-ca. Họ đắp đất sát vách thành và bắt đầu chọc phá vách để cho nó đổ xuống.
¹⁶Nhưng có một người đàn bà khôn khéo từ trong thành kêu lên, “Nghe đây, nghe đây! Làm ơn bảo Giô-áp đến đây. Tôi muốn nói chuyện với ông ta!”
¹⁷Vậy Giô-áp đến gần bà. Bà hỏi, “Ông phải Giô-áp không?”
Ông đáp, “Phải.”
Bà tiếp, “Nghe tôi nói đây.”
Giô-áp đáp, “Tôi nghe đây.”
¹⁸Người đàn bà bảo, “Trước đây người ta hay nói, ‘Hãy đi hỏi ý kiến A-bên,’ thì vấn đề sẽ được giải quyết xong xuôi. ¹⁹Tôi là một trong những người hiếu hòa, trung thành của Ít-ra-en. Ông đang tìm cách tiêu hủy một thành quan trọng của Ít-ra-en. Tại sao ông phải tiêu hủy tài sản của CHÚA?”
²⁰Giô-áp trả lời, “Ta đâu có muốn tiêu hủy hay phá hại vật gì đâu! ²¹Đó không phải là ý định của ta. Nhưng ở đây có một người từ vùng núi Ép-ra-im tên Sê-ba, con Bích-ri. Hắn phản nghịch vua Đa-vít. Nếu các ngươi giải hắn đến cho ta, ta sẽ không đụng gì đến thành cả.”
Người đàn bà bảo Giô-áp, “Người ta sẽ ném đầu hắn qua vách thành cho ông.”
²²Người đàn bà liền khôn khéo đi nói chuyện với dân trong thành. Họ cắt đầu Sê-ba, con Bích-ri và ném qua vách thành cho Giô-áp.
Ông thổi kèn, quân lính liền rời bỏ thành. Ai nấy trở về nhà, còn Giô-áp đi trở về với vua ở Giê-ru-sa-lem.

²³Giô-áp làm tư lệnh toàn quân Ít-ra-en. Bê-na-gia, con Giê-hô-gia-đa chỉ huy người Kê-rê-thít và Bê-lê-thít. ²⁴A-đô-ram coi sóc toán lao công. Giê-hô-sa-phát, con A-li-hút là lục sự. ²⁵Sê-ba là bí thư của vua. Xa-đốc và A-bia-tha làm thầy tế lễ, ²⁶còn Y-ra, người Giai-rít làm thầy tế lễ riêng⚓ cho Đa-vít.
