Sau-lơ giải cứu thành Gia-be
1Na-hách, người Am-môn, đi lên bao vây Gia-be Ga-la-át. Mọi người ở Gia-be nói với Na-hách: “Xin lập giao ước với chúng tôi, thì chúng tôi sẽ phục vụ ông.”
2Na-hách, người Am-môn, nói với họ: “Ta sẽ lập giao ước cùng các ngươi với điều kiện nầy: Phải móc mắt phải của tất cả các ngươi, để làm sỉ nhục toàn thể Y-sơ-ra-ên.”
3Các trưởng lão Gia-be nói với ông ấy: “Xin hoãn cho chúng tôi bảy ngày để chúng tôi sai sứ giả đến khắp lãnh thổ Y-sơ-ra-ên. Nếu không ai giải cứu chúng tôi thì chúng tôi sẽ đầu hàng ông.”
4Khi các sứ giả đến Ghi-bê-a, thành của Sau-lơ, thuật lại các lời ấy cho dân chúng nghe thì mọi người đều òa lên khóc.
5Lúc ấy, Sau-lơ từ ngoài đồng về, đi sau đàn bò. Ông hỏi: “Vì sao dân chúng khóc như vậy?” Người ta thuật lại những lời người Gia-be đã nói.
6Khi nghe những lời nầy, Sau-lơ được Thần của Đức Chúa Trời tác động mạnh, và ông nổi giận bừng bừng.
7Ông bắt một cặp bò, sả ra từng miếng, sai sứ giả đem đi khắp lãnh thổ Y-sơ-ra-ên rao rằng: “Ai không theo Sau-lơ và Sa-mu-ên ra trận, thì bò của người ấy sẽ bị xử như vậy.” Đức Giê-hô-va khiến dân chúng khiếp sợ, và họ đã ra trận, muôn người như một.
8Khi Sau-lơ điểm quân số tại Bê-xéc thì có ba trăm nghìn người Y-sơ-ra-ên và ba mươi nghìn người Giu-đa.
9Họ nói với các sứ giả đã đến từ Ga-la-át rằng: “Hãy về nói với người Gia-be Ga-la-át thế nầy: ‘Ngày mai, khi mặt trời lên cao, thì anh em sẽ được giải cứu.’” Các sứ giả trở về loan tin nầy cho người Gia-be. Dân chúng vui mừng,
10và họ nói với người Am-môn: “Ngày mai, chúng tôi sẽ ra hàng các ông, và các ông sẽ đối xử với chúng tôi theo điều các ông cho là tốt.”
11Ngày hôm sau, Sau-lơ chia dân chúng ra làm ba cánh quân, vừa lúc rạng đông, xông vào giữa trại quân và đánh người Am-môn cho đến gần đứng bóng. Những tên sống sót chạy hoảng loạn đến nỗi không có lấy hai tên chạy chung với nhau.
Sau-lơ được công nhận là vua
12Dân chúng nói với Sa-mu-ên: “Ai đã nói: ‘Sau-lơ mà cai trị chúng ta sao?’, hãy giao những kẻ đó cho chúng tôi giết đi.”
13Nhưng Sau-lơ nói: “Không một ai phải bị xử tử hôm nay cả, vì là ngày Đức Giê-hô-va đã giải cứu Y-sơ-ra-ên.”
14Sa-mu-ên nói với dân chúng: “Chúng ta hãy đi đến Ghinh-ganh để tái lập vương quyền.”
15Toàn dân cùng đi đến Ghinh-ganh. Tại đó, họ lập Sau-lơ làm vua trước mặt Đức Giê-hô-va. Họ dâng tế lễ bình an lên Đức Giê-hô-va. Sau-lơ và mọi người Y-sơ-ra-ên đều vui mừng vô cùng.

Saul Rescues the City of Jabesh
1Nahash⚓ the Ammonite went up and besieged Jabesh Gilead. And all the men of Jabesh said to him, “Make a treaty with us, and we will be subject to you.”
2But Nahash the Ammonite replied, “I will make a treaty with you only on the condition that I gouge out the right eye of every one of you and so bring disgrace on all Israel.”
3The elders of Jabesh said to him, “Give us seven days so we can send messengers throughout Israel; if no one comes to rescue us, we will surrender to you.”
4When the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul and reported these terms to the people, they all wept aloud.
5Just then Saul was returning from the fields, behind his oxen, and he asked, “What is wrong with everyone? Why are they weeping?” Then they repeated to him what the men of Jabesh had said.
6When Saul heard their words, the Spirit of God came powerfully upon him, and he burned with anger.
7He took a pair of oxen, cut them into pieces, and sent the pieces by messengers throughout Israel, proclaiming, “This is what will be done to the oxen of anyone who does not follow Saul and Samuel.” Then the terror of the Lord fell on the people, and they came out together as one.
8When Saul mustered them at Bezek, the men of Israel numbered three hundred thousand and those of Judah thirty thousand.
9They told the messengers who had come, “Say to the men of Jabesh Gilead, ‘By the time the sun is hot tomorrow, you will be rescued.’ ” When the messengers went and reported this to the men of Jabesh, they were elated.
10They said to the Ammonites, “Tomorrow we will surrender to you, and you can do to us whatever you like.”
11The next day Saul separated his men into three divisions; during the last watch of the night they broke into the camp of the Ammonites and slaughtered them until the heat of the day. Those who survived were scattered, so that no two of them were left together.
Saul Confirmed as King
12The people then said to Samuel, “Who was it that asked, ‘Shall Saul reign over us?’ Turn these men over to us so that we may put them to death.”
13But Saul said, “No one will be put to death today, for this day the Lord has rescued Israel.”
14Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, let us go to Gilgal and there renew the kingship.”
15So all the people went to Gilgal and made Saul king in the presence of the Lord. There they sacrificed fellowship offerings before the Lord, and Saul and all the Israelites held a great celebration.
