Jeremiah Buys a Field

¹The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord⚓in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar. ²For then the king of Babylon’s army besieged Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet was shut up ⚓in the court of the prison, which was in the king of Judah’s house. ³For Zedekiah king of Judah had shut him up, saying, “Why do you ⚓prophesy and say, ‘Thus says the Lord: ⚓“Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it; ⁴and Zedekiah king of Judah ⚓shall not escape from the hand of the Chaldeans, but shall surely be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon, and shall speak with him face to face, and see him ⚓eye to eye; ⁵then he shall ⚓lead Zedekiah to Babylon, and there he shall be ⚓until I visit him,” says the Lord; ⚓“though you fight with the Chaldeans, you shall not succeed” ’?”
⁶And Jeremiah said, “The word of the Lord came to me, saying, ⁷‘Behold, Hanamel the son of Shallum your uncle will come to you, saying, “Buy my field which is in Anathoth, for the ⚓right of redemption is yours to buy it.” ’ ⁸Then Hanamel my uncle’s son came to me in the court of the prison according to the word of the Lord, and said to me, ‘Please buy my field that is in Anathoth, which is in the country of Benjamin; for the right of inheritance is yours, and the redemption yours; buy it for yourself.’ Then I knew that this was the word of the Lord. ⁹So I bought the field from Hanamel, the son of my uncle who was in Anathoth, and ⚓weighed out to him the money—seventeen shekels of silver. ¹⁰And I signed the deed and sealed it, took witnesses, and weighed the money on the scales. ¹¹So I took the purchase deed, both that which was sealed according to the law and custom, and that which was open; ¹²and I gave the purchase deed to ⚓Baruch the son of Neriah, son of Mahseiah, in the presence of Hanamel my uncle’s son, and in the presence of the ⚓witnesses who signed the purchase deed, before all the Jews who sat in the court of the prison.
¹³“Then I charged ⚓Baruch before them, saying, ¹⁴‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: “Take these deeds, both this purchase deed which is sealed and this deed which is open, and put them in an earthen vessel, that they may last many days.” ¹⁵For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: “Houses and fields and vineyards shall be ⚓possessed again in this land.” ’

Jeremiah Prays for Understanding

¹⁶“Now when I had delivered the purchase deed to Baruch the son of Neriah, I prayed to the Lord, saying: ¹⁷‘Ah, Lord God! Behold, ⚓You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. ⚓There is nothing too hard for You. ¹⁸You show ⚓lovingkindness to thousands, and repay the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them—the Great, ⚓the Mighty God, whose name is⚓the Lord of hosts. ¹⁹You are⚓great in counsel and mighty in work, for Your ⚓eyes are open to all the ways of the sons of men, ⚓to give everyone according to his ways and according to the fruit of his doings. ²⁰You have set signs and wonders in the land of Egypt, to this day, and in Israel and among other men; and You have made Yourself ⚓a name, as it is this day. ²¹You ⚓have brought Your people Israel out of the land of Egypt with signs and wonders, with a strong hand and an outstretched arm, and with great terror; ²²You have given them this land, of which You swore to their fathers to give them—⚓“a land flowing with milk and honey.” ²³And they came in and took possession of it, but ⚓they have not obeyed Your voice or walked in Your law. They have done nothing of all that You commanded them to do; therefore You have caused all this calamity to come upon them.
²⁴‘Look, the siege mounds! They have come to the city to take it; and the city has been given into the hand of the Chaldeans who fight against it, because of ⚓the sword and famine and pestilence. What You have spoken has happened; there You see it! ²⁵And You have said to me, O Lord God, “Buy the field for money, and take witnesses”!—yet the city has been given into the hand of the Chaldeans.’ ”

God’s Assurance of the People’s Return

²⁶Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying, ²⁷“Behold, I am the Lord, the ⚓God of all flesh. Is there anything too hard for Me? ²⁸Therefore thus says the Lord: ‘Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the Chaldeans, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he shall take it. ²⁹And the Chaldeans who fight against this city shall come and ⚓set fire to this city and burn it, with the houses ⚓on whose roofs they have offered incense to Baal and poured out drink offerings to other gods, to provoke Me to anger; ³⁰because the children of Israel and the children of Judah ⚓have done only evil before Me from their youth. For the children of Israel have provoked Me only to anger with the work of their hands,’ says the Lord. ³¹‘For this city has been to Me a provocation of My anger and My fury from the day that they built it, even to this day; ⚓so I will remove it from before My face ³²because of all the evil of the children of Israel and the children of Judah, which they have done to provoke Me to anger—⚓they, their kings, their princes, their priests, ⚓their prophets, the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. ³³And they have turned to Me the ⚓back, and not the face; though I taught them, ⚓rising up early and teaching them, yet they have not listened to receive instruction. ³⁴But they ⚓set their abominations in the house which is called by My name, to defile it. ³⁵And they built the high places of Baal which are in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, to ⚓cause their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire to ⚓Molech, ⚓which I did not command them, nor did it come into My mind that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin.’
³⁶“Now therefore, thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning this city of which you say, ‘It shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence’: ³⁷Behold, I will ⚓gather them out of all countries where I have driven them in My anger, in My fury, and in great wrath; I will bring them back to this place, and I will cause them ⚓to dwell safely. ³⁸They shall be ⚓My people, and I will be their God; ³⁹then I will ⚓give them one heart and one way, that they may fear Me forever, for the good of them and their children after them. ⁴⁰And ⚓I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from doing them good; but ⚓I will put My fear in their hearts so that they will not depart from Me. ⁴¹Yes, ⚓I will rejoice over them to do them good, and ⚓I will assuredly plant them in this land, with all My heart and with all My soul.’
⁴²“For thus says the Lord: ⚓‘Just as I have brought all this great calamity on this people, so I will bring on them all the good that I have promised them. ⁴³And fields will be bought in this land ⚓of which you say, “It is desolate, without man or beast; it has been given into the hand of the Chaldeans.” ⁴⁴Men will buy fields for money, sign deeds and seal them, and take witnesses, in ⚓the land of Benjamin, in the places around Jerusalem, in the cities of Judah, in the cities of the mountains, in the cities of the lowland, and in the cities of the South; for ⚓I will cause their captives to return,’ says the Lord.”

Giê-rê-mi mua một thửa ruộng

¹CHÚA phán cùng Giê-rê-mi vào năm thứ mười khi vua Xê-đê-kia làm vua Giu-đa⚓, tức năm thứ mười tám đời vua Nê-bu-cát-nết-xa. ²Lúc ấy đạo quân của vua Ba-by-lôn đang bao vây Giê-ru-sa-lem. Nhà tiên tri Giê-rê-mi bị giam trong sân của lính cận vệ, nơi cung vua Giu-đa. ³Xê-đê-kia, vua Giu-đa đã nhốt Giê-rê-mi ở đó. Xê-đê-kia hỏi, “Tại sao ngươi tiên tri như vậy?” Giê-rê-mi đã tuyên bố, CHÚA phán như sau: “Ta sắp trao thành Giê-ru-sa-lem cho vua Ba-by-lôn, người sẽ chiếm lấy nó. ⁴Xê-đê-kia vua Giu-đa sẽ không thoát khỏi tay quân Ba-by-lôn, nhưng chắc chắn sẽ bị giao vào tay vua Ba-by-lôn. Người sẽ nói với vua Ba-by-lôn mặt đối mặt, và nhìn tận mắt người. ⁵Vua sẽ đày Xê-đê-kia sang Ba-by-lôn, người sẽ ở đó cho đến khi ta xử tội người xong,” CHÚA phán vậy. “Nếu ngươi đánh lại người Ba-by-lôn, ngươi sẽ không thắng nổi đâu.”
⁶Trong khi Giê-rê-mi đang ở trong tù ông nói, “CHÚA phán cùng ta: ⁷Bà con ngươi là Ha-na-mên, con trai Sa-lum chú ngươi, sắp đến thăm ngươi. Ha-na-mên sẽ nói cùng ngươi, ‘Anh Giê-rê-mi à, anh là bà con gần nhất của tôi, cho nên anh hãy mua miếng ruộng của tôi gần thành A-na-thốt đi. Vì đó là quyền lợi và bổn phận của anh.’”
⁸Rồi mọi việc xảy ra y như CHÚA phán. Ha-na-nên, bà con tôi đến thăm tôi trong sân của toán cận vệ và bảo tôi, “Anh hãy mua miếng ruộng của tôi gần A-na-thốt trong xứ Bên-gia-min đi. Đó là quyền lợi và bổn phận của anh; anh phải mua và làm chủ nó.” Vì thế tôi biết đây là sứ điệp đến từ CHÚA.
⁹Tôi liền mua thửa ruộng ở A-na-thốt từ Ha-na-mên, bà con tôi, trả cho người bảy lượng⚓ bạc. ¹⁰Tôi ký giấy mua⚓, đóng ấn⚓ và tìm mấy người chứng. Tôi cũng cân bạc trên cân. ¹¹Rồi tôi lấy hai bản giấy chuyển nhượng⚓ quyền sở hữu, tức giấy đã được đóng ấn liệt kê những điều kiện và giới hạn của chủ quyền, còn giấy kia không đóng ấn. ¹²Tôi trao các giấy tờ đó cho Ba-rúc, con Nê-ria, cháu Ma-a-sê-gia. Ha-na-mên, bà con tôi, các nhân chứng ký giấy tờ ghi việc chuyển nhượng sở hữu chủ, và nhiều người Giu-đa ngồi trong sân của toán cận vệ thấy tôi trao giấy chuyển nhượng cho Ba-rúc.
¹³Trong khi mọi người đang chứng kiến, tôi bảo Ba-rúc rằng, ¹⁴“CHÚA Toàn Năng, Thượng Đế của Ít-ra-en phán: Hãy lấy hai bản chuyển nhượng sở hữu chủ, một bản đóng ấn, và một bản không đóng ấn, bỏ vào trong một hũ bằng đất để giữ được lâu. ¹⁵CHÚA Toàn Năng, Thượng Đế của Ít-ra-en phán: Trong tương lai dân ta sẽ lại mua sắm nhà cửa, ruộng nương, vườn nho trong xứ Ít-ra-en.”
¹⁶Sau khi tôi đã giao giấy chuyển nhượng cho Ba-rúc, con trai Nê-ria, thì tôi cầu nguyện cùng CHÚA rằng,
¹⁷Ôi, lạy CHÚA là Thượng Đế, Ngài đã tạo nên trời đất bằng quyền năng lớn lao của Ngài. Không có việc gì khó quá cho Ngài. ¹⁸Ngài tỏ lòng yêu thương và nhân từ cho hàng ngàn người, nhưng Ngài cũng mang trừng phạt đến cho con cháu vì tội lỗi của cha mẹ chúng. Lạy Thượng Đế cao cả và vĩ đại, danh Ngài là CHÚA Toàn Năng. ¹⁹Ngài dự liệu những việc lớn. Ngài biết hết mọi điều người ta làm, và thưởng cho họ tùy lối sống của họ và theo điều họ làm. ²⁰Ngài làm nhiều phép lạ và những việc diệu kỳ trong xứ Ai-cập. Ngài vẫn còn làm những điều đó trong Ít-ra-en và trong các dân tộc khác cho đến hôm nay. Vì thế người ta biết đến Ngài. ²¹Ngài mang dân Ngài, tức dân Ít-ra-en ra khỏi Ai-cập bằng những dấu kỳ, phép lạ, quyền năng lớn lao và sức mạnh Ngài. Ngài mang đến sự kinh hoàng cho mọi người. ²²Ngài cho họ xứ nầy mà Ngài đã hứa cho tổ tiên họ từ trước, một vùng đất phì nhiêu. ²³Họ đến trong xứ nầy và nhận nó làm sản nghiệp nhưng họ không vâng lời Ngài và đi theo lời giáo huấn Ngài. Họ không làm theo mọi điều Ngài truyền dặn. Cho nên Ngài khiến những điều kinh khiếp nầy xảy ra cho họ.
²⁴“Kìa, kẻ thù đã bao vây thành phố và đắp đường lên đến chóp vách để chiếm nó. Vì chiến tranh, đói kém, dịch lệ, thành sẽ bị trao cho người Ba-by-lôn đang bao vây nó. Ngài bảo trước là những điều nầy sẽ xảy ra, bây giờ Ngài nhìn thấy nó đang xảy ra. ²⁵Nhưng lạy Chúa là Thượng Đế, Ngài bảo tôi, ‘Hãy dùng bạc mua miếng ruộng và gọi các nhân chứng đến.’ Ngài bảo tôi như thế nầy trong khi quân Ba-by-lôn sắp sửa chiếm thành.”
²⁶Sau đó CHÚA phán cùng Giê-rê-mi rằng: ²⁷“Ta là CHÚA, Thượng Đế của mọi người trên đất. Không việc gì ta không làm được. ²⁸Cho nên CHÚA phán: Ta sẽ trao thành Giê-ru-sa-lem vào tay quân Ba-by-lôn và Nê-bu-cát-nết-xa, vua Ba-by-lôn. Người sẽ chiếm lấy thành. ²⁹Quân Ba-by-lôn đang tấn công thành Giê-ru-sa-lem. Họ sắp vào thành và sẽ phóng hỏa đốt rụi thành phố luôn cả nhà cửa trong đó mà dân chúng Giê-ru-sa-lem đã dâng của lễ cho Ba-anh trên mái và đổ các của lễ uống cho các thần tượng khác để chọc giận ta. ³⁰Từ khi còn trẻ, dân Ít-ra-en và Giu-đa đã làm những điều sái bậy. Chúng đã chọc giận ta bằng cách bái lạy các thần tượng do chính tay mình làm ra,” CHÚA phán vậy. ³¹“Từ ngày Giê-ru-sa-lem được xây cất cho đến nay, thành nầy đã chọc giận ta, đến nỗi ta muốn dẹp nó đi khỏi mắt ta. ³²Ta sẽ tiêu hủy nó vì những điều ác dân Ít-ra-en và Giu-đa làm. Dân chúng, vua, các viên chức, các thầy tế lễ, các nhà tiên tri, toàn dân Giu-đa và dân Ít-ra-en đã chọc giận ta. ³³Chúng đã xây lưng lại cùng ta, mà không xây mặt. Bao lần ta muốn dạy chúng nó nhưng chúng nó không nghe, cũng không chịu học. ³⁴Chúng đã đặt những thần tượng gớm ghiếc ở nơi ta đã chọn để thờ phụng, khiến cho nơi ấy nhơ nhớp. ³⁵Trong thung lũng Bên-Hin-nôm⚓ chúng đã xây những nơi thờ lạy Ba-anh để thiêu con trai con gái mình cho thần Mô-léc. Ta không bao giờ bảo chúng làm những điều gớm ghiếc như thế. Ta không bao giờ tưởng tượng nổi rằng chúng sẽ làm việc gớm ghiếc như vậy để khiến Giu-đa phạm tội.”
³⁶Ngươi nói rằng, “Vì chiến tranh, đói kém, dịch lệ, thành sẽ bị trao vào tay vua Ba-by-lôn.” Nhưng CHÚA là Thượng Đế của Ít-ra-en phán như sau về Giê-ru-sa-lem: ³⁷“Ta đuổi dân Ít-ra-en và Giu-đa ra khỏi xứ chúng vì ta nổi giận cùng chúng. Nhưng ngươi phải biết rằng ta sẽ sớm gom chúng lại từ mọi xứ mà ta đã đày chúng đến và mang chúng về lại tại xứ nầy để chúng sống bình yên. ³⁸Dân Ít-ra-en và Giu-đa sẽ làm dân ta, ta sẽ làm Thượng Đế chúng. ³⁹Ta sẽ khiến chúng mong muốn trở thành một dân tộc đoàn kết. Chúng sẽ thật lòng muốn thờ lạy ta suốt đời vì ích lợi cho chúng và cho con cháu chúng.
⁴⁰Ta sẽ lập giao ước với chúng, giao ước đó sẽ còn đời đời. Ta sẽ không bao giờ quay mặt khỏi chúng; ta sẽ luôn luôn làm lợi cho chúng. Ta sẽ khiến chúng kính sợ ta thật lòng và không bao giờ xây bỏ ta. ⁴¹Ta sẽ vui thích mà làm lợi cho chúng. Ta sẽ hết lòng trồng chúng lại trong xứ nầy và khiến chúng mọc lên.”
⁴²Vì CHÚA phán như sau: “Ta đã mang đại họa đến cho dân Ít-ra-en và Giu-đa. Cũng vậy ta sẽ mang những điều tốt lành mà ta đã hứa đến cho chúng. ⁴³Các ngươi nói, ‘Đất nầy là sa mạc hoang vu, không người hay súc vật nào ở. Nó đã được trao cho người Ba-by-lôn.’ Nhưng trong tương lai, dân chúng sẽ lại mua ruộng trong xứ nầy. ⁴⁴Họ sẽ dùng tiền để mua ruộng. Họ sẽ ký tên và đóng ấn các khế ước và gọi nhân chứng. Họ sẽ lại mua ruộng nương trong xứ Bên-gia-min, vùng quanh Giê-ru-sa-lem, các thành của Giu-đa và trong vùng núi, vùng đồi phía Tây và vùng Nam Giu-đa. Ta sẽ khiến mọi vật trở lại tốt đẹp cho chúng như xưa,” CHÚA phán vậy.
