Jeremiah Buys a Field

¹The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord⚓in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar. ²For then the king of Babylon’s army besieged Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet was shut up ⚓in the court of the prison, which was in the king of Judah’s house. ³For Zedekiah king of Judah had shut him up, saying, “Why do you ⚓prophesy and say, ‘Thus says the Lord: ⚓“Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it; ⁴and Zedekiah king of Judah ⚓shall not escape from the hand of the Chaldeans, but shall surely be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon, and shall speak with him face to face, and see him ⚓eye to eye; ⁵then he shall ⚓lead Zedekiah to Babylon, and there he shall be ⚓until I visit him,” says the Lord; ⚓“though you fight with the Chaldeans, you shall not succeed” ’?”
⁶And Jeremiah said, “The word of the Lord came to me, saying, ⁷‘Behold, Hanamel the son of Shallum your uncle will come to you, saying, “Buy my field which is in Anathoth, for the ⚓right of redemption is yours to buy it.” ’ ⁸Then Hanamel my uncle’s son came to me in the court of the prison according to the word of the Lord, and said to me, ‘Please buy my field that is in Anathoth, which is in the country of Benjamin; for the right of inheritance is yours, and the redemption yours; buy it for yourself.’ Then I knew that this was the word of the Lord. ⁹So I bought the field from Hanamel, the son of my uncle who was in Anathoth, and ⚓weighed out to him the money—seventeen shekels of silver. ¹⁰And I signed the deed and sealed it, took witnesses, and weighed the money on the scales. ¹¹So I took the purchase deed, both that which was sealed according to the law and custom, and that which was open; ¹²and I gave the purchase deed to ⚓Baruch the son of Neriah, son of Mahseiah, in the presence of Hanamel my uncle’s son, and in the presence of the ⚓witnesses who signed the purchase deed, before all the Jews who sat in the court of the prison.
¹³“Then I charged ⚓Baruch before them, saying, ¹⁴‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: “Take these deeds, both this purchase deed which is sealed and this deed which is open, and put them in an earthen vessel, that they may last many days.” ¹⁵For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: “Houses and fields and vineyards shall be ⚓possessed again in this land.” ’

Jeremiah Prays for Understanding

¹⁶“Now when I had delivered the purchase deed to Baruch the son of Neriah, I prayed to the Lord, saying: ¹⁷‘Ah, Lord God! Behold, ⚓You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. ⚓There is nothing too hard for You. ¹⁸You show ⚓lovingkindness to thousands, and repay the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them—the Great, ⚓the Mighty God, whose name is⚓the Lord of hosts. ¹⁹You are⚓great in counsel and mighty in work, for Your ⚓eyes are open to all the ways of the sons of men, ⚓to give everyone according to his ways and according to the fruit of his doings. ²⁰You have set signs and wonders in the land of Egypt, to this day, and in Israel and among other men; and You have made Yourself ⚓a name, as it is this day. ²¹You ⚓have brought Your people Israel out of the land of Egypt with signs and wonders, with a strong hand and an outstretched arm, and with great terror; ²²You have given them this land, of which You swore to their fathers to give them—⚓“a land flowing with milk and honey.” ²³And they came in and took possession of it, but ⚓they have not obeyed Your voice or walked in Your law. They have done nothing of all that You commanded them to do; therefore You have caused all this calamity to come upon them.
²⁴‘Look, the siege mounds! They have come to the city to take it; and the city has been given into the hand of the Chaldeans who fight against it, because of ⚓the sword and famine and pestilence. What You have spoken has happened; there You see it! ²⁵And You have said to me, O Lord God, “Buy the field for money, and take witnesses”!—yet the city has been given into the hand of the Chaldeans.’ ”

God’s Assurance of the People’s Return

²⁶Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying, ²⁷“Behold, I am the Lord, the ⚓God of all flesh. Is there anything too hard for Me? ²⁸Therefore thus says the Lord: ‘Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the Chaldeans, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he shall take it. ²⁹And the Chaldeans who fight against this city shall come and ⚓set fire to this city and burn it, with the houses ⚓on whose roofs they have offered incense to Baal and poured out drink offerings to other gods, to provoke Me to anger; ³⁰because the children of Israel and the children of Judah ⚓have done only evil before Me from their youth. For the children of Israel have provoked Me only to anger with the work of their hands,’ says the Lord. ³¹‘For this city has been to Me a provocation of My anger and My fury from the day that they built it, even to this day; ⚓so I will remove it from before My face ³²because of all the evil of the children of Israel and the children of Judah, which they have done to provoke Me to anger—⚓they, their kings, their princes, their priests, ⚓their prophets, the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. ³³And they have turned to Me the ⚓back, and not the face; though I taught them, ⚓rising up early and teaching them, yet they have not listened to receive instruction. ³⁴But they ⚓set their abominations in the house which is called by My name, to defile it. ³⁵And they built the high places of Baal which are in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, to ⚓cause their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire to ⚓Molech, ⚓which I did not command them, nor did it come into My mind that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin.’
³⁶“Now therefore, thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning this city of which you say, ‘It shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence’: ³⁷Behold, I will ⚓gather them out of all countries where I have driven them in My anger, in My fury, and in great wrath; I will bring them back to this place, and I will cause them ⚓to dwell safely. ³⁸They shall be ⚓My people, and I will be their God; ³⁹then I will ⚓give them one heart and one way, that they may fear Me forever, for the good of them and their children after them. ⁴⁰And ⚓I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from doing them good; but ⚓I will put My fear in their hearts so that they will not depart from Me. ⁴¹Yes, ⚓I will rejoice over them to do them good, and ⚓I will assuredly plant them in this land, with all My heart and with all My soul.’
⁴²“For thus says the Lord: ⚓‘Just as I have brought all this great calamity on this people, so I will bring on them all the good that I have promised them. ⁴³And fields will be bought in this land ⚓of which you say, “It is desolate, without man or beast; it has been given into the hand of the Chaldeans.” ⁴⁴Men will buy fields for money, sign deeds and seal them, and take witnesses, in ⚓the land of Benjamin, in the places around Jerusalem, in the cities of Judah, in the cities of the mountains, in the cities of the lowland, and in the cities of the South; for ⚓I will cause their captives to return,’ says the Lord.”

Giê-rê-mi mua một đám ruộng

¹Vào năm thứ mười triều vua Sê-đê-kia nước Giu-đa, tức là năm thứ mười tám triều vua Nê-bu-cát-nết-sa, có lời của Đức Giê-hô-va phán với Giê-rê-mi.⚓ ²Bấy giờ, quân đội của vua Ba-by-lôn bao vây thành Giê-ru-sa-lem, còn nhà tiên tri Giê-rê-mi đang bị giam trong sân vệ binh tại cung điện vua Giu-đa. ³Sê-đê-kia, vua Giu-đa, đã giam ông và nói: “Tại sao ngươi dám nói tiên tri là Đức Giê-hô-va phán: ‘Nầy, Ta sẽ phó thành nầy vào tay vua Ba-by-lôn và vua ấy sẽ chiếm thành; ⁴Sê-đê-kia, vua Giu-đa, sẽ không thoát khỏi tay người Canh-đê, nhưng sẽ bị nộp vào tay vua Ba-by-lôn. Sê-đê-kia sẽ thấy tận mắt và nói chuyện mặt đối mặt với vua ấy. ⁵Sê-đê-kia sẽ bị giải về Ba-by-lôn và ở đó cho đến khi Ta thăm viếng; dù các ngươi có kháng cự cũng sẽ không thắng nổi người Canh-đê.’ Đức Giê-hô-va phán vậy?”.
⁶Giê-rê-mi nói: “Có lời của Đức Giê-hô-va phán với tôi rằng: ⁷Nầy Ha-na-mê-ên, con trai chú Sa-lum của con, sẽ đến gặp con và nói: ‘Anh hãy mua đám ruộng của tôi tại A-na-tốt, vì anh có quyền chuộc để mua ruộng ấy.’ ⁸Ha-na-mê-ên, con trai chú tôi, vâng lời Đức Giê-hô-va đến gặp tôi trong sân vệ binh và nói: ‘Tôi xin anh mua lại đám ruộng của tôi ở A-na-tốt, trong đất Bên-gia-min, vì anh có quyền chuộc và sở hữu ruộng ấy; xin anh mua giùm đi.’ Bấy giờ, tôi nhận biết đó là lời của Đức Giê-hô-va.
⁹Vậy tôi mua ruộng ở A-na-tốt của Ha-na-mê-ên, con trai chú tôi, và tôi đã cân cho anh ta gần hai trăm gam bạc.⚓ ¹⁰Tôi viết tờ khế ước, niêm phong lại, mời người làm chứng rồi cân bạc trên cân. ¹¹Tôi lấy khế ước bán, gồm có bản đã niêm phong với các điều khoản và quy định, và bản không niêm phong ¹²và trao cho Ba-rúc, con trai Nê-ri-gia, cháu Ma-a-xê-gia, trước mặt Ha-na-mê-ên, con trai chú tôi, và trước mặt những người làm chứng đã ký tên vào khế ước, cũng như trước mặt mọi người Giu-đa đang ngồi trong sân vệ binh. ¹³Trước mặt họ, tôi dặn Ba-rúc rằng: ¹⁴Đức Giê-hô-va vạn quân, Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên, phán: ‘Hãy lấy các khế ước nầy, cả khế ước niêm phong lẫn khế ước không niêm phong, cất vào một chiếc bình gốm, để chúng được bảo quản lâu ngày.’ ¹⁵Vì Đức Giê-hô-va vạn quân, Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên, phán: ‘Người ta sẽ còn mua nhà cửa, ruộng đất, và vườn nho trong xứ nầy.’
¹⁶Sau khi trao khế ước cho Ba-rúc, con trai Nê-ri-gia, tôi cầu nguyện với Đức Giê-hô-va rằng: ¹⁷‘Lạy Chúa Giê-hô-va! Chính Ngài đã dùng quyền năng lớn lao và cánh tay quyền uy mà dựng nên trời và đất! Không có việc gì khó quá cho Ngài. ¹⁸Ngài bày tỏ lòng nhân ái đến nghìn đời, nhưng phạt tội cha ông đến đời con cháu. Ôi! Ngài là Đức Chúa Trời vĩ đại và quyền uy, danh Ngài là Đức Giê-hô-va vạn quân!. ¹⁹Kế hoạch của Ngài thật lớn lao, công việc Ngài đầy quyền năng. Mắt Ngài soi thấu mọi đường lối của con cái loài người để ban thưởng cho mỗi người tùy theo đường lối và kết quả công việc họ làm. ²⁰Ngài đã thực hiện các dấu kỳ phép lạ trong đất Ai Cập, và cho đến ngày nay Ngài vẫn tiếp tục trong Y-sơ-ra-ên cũng như trong mọi nơi khác; Ngài đã làm cho danh Ngài nổi tiếng như hiện nay. ²¹Ngài đã dùng những dấu kỳ phép lạ, đưa bàn tay mạnh mẽ và cánh tay dang ra, gây bao nỗi kinh hoàng mà đem dân Y-sơ-ra-ên của Ngài ra khỏi Ai Cập. ²²Ngài ban cho chúng đất nầy, một miền đất đượm sữa và mật, mà Ngài đã thề ban cho tổ phụ của chúng. ²³Chúng đã vào và nhận đất nầy làm sản nghiệp, nhưng không vâng theo tiếng Ngài, không sống theo luật pháp Ngài, không thực hành một điều nào trong mọi điều mà Ngài dặn bảo. Vì vậy, Ngài đã giáng mọi tai ương nầy trên chúng.
²⁴Kìa, các ụ đã đắp sát thành để chiếm thành. Vì gươm đao, đói kém, dịch bệnh, nên thành bị rơi vào tay người Canh-đê đang tranh chiến với nó. Điều Ngài phán đã xảy ra, và chính Ngài thấy rõ! ²⁵Lạy Chúa Giê-hô-va, Ngài đã phán với con: “Hãy lấy bạc mua thửa ruộng nầy, và mời người làm chứng.” Thế mà thành đã rơi vào tay người Canh-đê!’”
²⁶Có lời Đức Giê-hô-va phán với Giê-rê-mi: ²⁷“Nầy, Ta là Giê-hô-va, Đức Chúa Trời của mọi loài xác thịt; có việc gì khó quá cho Ta chăng? ²⁸Vì thế, Đức Giê-hô-va phán: Nầy, Ta sẽ phó thành nầy vào tay người Canh-đê, vào tay Nê-bu-cát-nết-sa, vua Ba-by-lôn, và vua ấy sẽ chiếm thành.⚓ ²⁹Những người Canh-đê đang tấn công thành nầy sẽ đến phóng hỏa đốt thành, thiêu hủy các nhà mà người ta dâng hương cho Ba-anh trên mái và làm lễ quán cho các thần khác, để chọc giận Ta.
³⁰Vì từ thuở niên thiếu, con cái Y-sơ-ra-ên và con cái Giu-đa chỉ biết làm điều gian ác dưới mắt Ta. Thật, con cái Y-sơ-ra-ên chỉ biết chọc giận Ta bằng những công việc tay chúng làm, Đức Giê-hô-va phán vậy. ³¹Từ ngày được xây lên cho đến ngày nay, thành nầy đã làm cho Ta bực tức và giận dữ. Ta muốn loại bỏ nó khỏi mặt Ta ³²vì mọi điều ác mà con cái Y-sơ-ra-ên và con cái Giu-đa, chính chúng, vua chúa, các thủ lĩnh, các thầy tế lễ, các nhà tiên tri của chúng, cả người Giu-đa và dân cư Giê-ru-sa-lem đã làm để chọc giận Ta, ³³Chúng không quay mặt mà quay lưng lại với Ta. Dù Ta có thường xuyên khuyên dạy chúng, chúng vẫn không nghe, không tiếp nhận lời dạy dỗ. ³⁴Chúng đã đặt những vật ghê tởm trong nhà được gọi bằng danh Ta, để làm cho ô uế.⚓ ³⁵Chúng đã xây các nơi cao của Ba-anh trong thung lũng Ben Hi-nôm để dâng con trai con gái mình cho Mo-lóc. Đó là điều mà Ta không truyền dạy, cũng không nghĩ rằng chúng có thể làm điều ghê tởm như thế để gây cho Giu-đa phạm tội.⚓
³⁶Vì thế, bây giờ Giê-hô-va Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên phán về thành mà các ngươi nói rằng nó đã rơi vào tay vua Ba-by-lôn bởi gươm đao, đói kém, dịch bệnh, như sau: ³⁷‘Nầy, Ta sẽ tập hợp chúng từ mọi nước mà Ta đã đuổi chúng đến trong cơn bực tức, giận dữ và thịnh nộ. Ta sẽ đem chúng trở về nơi nầy và cho chúng an cư lạc nghiệp. ³⁸Chúng sẽ làm dân Ta, và Ta sẽ làm Đức Chúa Trời của chúng. ³⁹Ta sẽ ban cho chúng cùng một tấm lòng, cùng một đường lối để chúng kính sợ Ta trọn đời, nhờ đó chính chúng và dòng dõi con cháu chúng đều được phước. ⁴⁰Ta sẽ lập với chúng một giao ước đời đời: Ta sẽ không lìa bỏ chúng và không ngừng ban phước cho chúng. Ta sẽ đặt sự kính sợ Ta vào lòng chúng để chúng không lìa bỏ Ta nữa. ⁴¹Ta sẽ lấy làm vui mà ban phước cho chúng, hết lòng hết sức mà trồng chúng bền vững trong đất nầy.’
⁴²Đức Giê-hô-va phán: ‘Như Ta đã giáng mọi tai vạ khủng khiếp trên dân nầy, Ta cũng sẽ giáng trên chúng mọi phước lành mà Ta đã hứa với chúng. ⁴³Người ta sẽ mua ruộng trong xứ nầy, xứ mà các con bảo: “Đó là nơi hoang vu, không có loài người, cũng không có loài thú, đã rơi vào tay người Canh-đê.” ⁴⁴Người ta sẽ dùng bạc mua ruộng, lập khế ước bán, niêm phong lại, mời người làm chứng trong đất Bên-gia-min và vùng phụ cận Giê-ru-sa-lem, trong các thành Giu-đa và trong các thành miền núi, vùng Sơ-phê-la và vùng Nê-ghép. Vì Ta sẽ đem chúng trở về từ cảnh lưu đày.’” Đức Giê-hô-va phán vậy.
