¹Dân thành Ki-ri-át Giê-a-rim đến khiêng rương giao ước của CHÚA lên nhà ông A-bi-na-đáp ở trên đồi; họ biệt riêng Ê-lê-a-sa, con trai ông, để trông nom hòm giao ước của CHÚA.

Sa-mu-ên Xét Xử Dân Y-sơ-ra-ên

²Kể từ ngày rương giao ước được khiêng về đặt trong thành Ki-ri-át Giê-a-rim, một thời gian dài trôi qua: thấm thoát đã hai mươi năm. Toàn dân Y-sơ-ra-ên khóc lóc quay về với CHÚA. ³Ông Sa-mu-ên nói với toàn dân Y-sơ-ra-ên: “Nếu anh chị em thật lòng muốn quay về cùng CHÚA, anh chị em phải dẹp bỏ các thần tượng ngoại bang, và các tượng nữ thần Át-tạc-tê nữa. Anh chị em phải hướng lòng về CHÚA, phụng sự một mình Ngài mà thôi; bấy giờ Ngài sẽ giải cứu anh chị em khỏi tay người Phi-li-tin.” ⁴Vậy, dân Y-sơ-ra-ên dẹp bỏ các tượng thần Ba-anh và Át-tạc-tê, chỉ phụng sự một mình CHÚA thôi.
⁵Ông Sa-mu-ên bảo tiếp: “Anh chị em hãy tập họp toàn dân Y-sơ-ra-ên lại tại Mích-ba, để tôi cầu nguyện CHÚA cho anh chị em.” ⁶Dân chúng tụ họp lại tại Mích-ba. Họ múc nước, đổ ra trước mặt CHÚA. Trọn ngày ấy, họ kiêng ăn và xưng tội: “Chúng con có phạm tội với CHÚA.” Và tại đó, tại Mích-ba, ông Sa-mu-ên trở nên nhà lãnh đạo xét xử dân Y-sơ-ra-ên.
⁷Khi người Phi-li-tin nghe tin dân Y-sơ-ra-ên tụ họp tại Mích-ba, các nhà lãnh đạo của họ ra quân tiến đánh Y-sơ-ra-ên. Dân Y-sơ-ra-ên nghe tin ấy, hoảng sợ. ⁸Họ nói với ông Sa-mu-ên: “Xin ông vì chúng tôi không ngừng kêu cầu CHÚA, là Đức Chúa Trời chúng tôi, xin Ngài giải cứu chúng tôi khỏi tay người Phi-li-tin.” ⁹Ông Sa-mu-ên bắt một con chiên sữa làm tế lễ toàn thiêu dâng lên CHÚA.
Ông kêu xin CHÚA giải cứu dân Y-sơ-ra-ên, và CHÚA nhậm lời ông.
¹⁰Trong khi ông Sa-mu-ên dâng tế lễ toàn thiêu, người Phi-li-tin kéo quân đến đánh Y-sơ-ra-ên, nhưng CHÚA cho trời gầm sấm nổ vang rền, khiến cho quân Phi-li-tin chạy tán loạn và bị quân Y-sơ-ra-ên đánh bại. ¹¹Quân Y-sơ-ra-ên từ thành Mích-ba chạy ra, rượt theo quân Phi-li-tin và đánh giết họ cho đến một nơi phía dưới thành Bết-ca. ¹²Ông Sa-mu-ên dựng một tảng đá giữa Mích-ba và Sen⚓ Ông nói: “CHÚA đã cứu giúp chúng ta đến chốn này.” Và ông gọi tên tảng đá là Ê-bên Ê-xe.⚓
¹³Người Phi-li-tin thất trận nhục nhã. Trọn đời ông Sa-mu-ên, CHÚA ngăn cản, không cho người Phi-li-tin xâm lấn lãnh thổ Y-sơ-ra-ên. ¹⁴Người Phi-li-tin trả lại các thành họ chiếm đóng, giữa Éc-rôn và Gát, cho dân Y-sơ-ra-ên. Như vậy, dân Y-sơ-ra-ên giải phóng địa phận các thành ấy khỏi sự cai trị của người Phi-li-tin. Cũng có hòa bình giữa dân Y-sơ-ra-ên và dân A-mô-rít.⚓
¹⁵Ông Sa-mu-ên lãnh đạo xét xử dân Y-sơ-ra-ên cho đến khi ông qua đời. ¹⁶Mỗi năm, ông đi vòng qua các thành Bê-tên, Ghinh-ganh, Mích-ba, và xét xử dân Y-sơ-ra-ên trong các thành ấy. ¹⁷Rồi ông trở về nhà ở Ra-ma. Tại đó ông cũng xét xử dân Y-sơ-ra-ên. Ông dựng một bàn thờ cho CHÚA tại đó.

¹Then the men of ⚓Kirjath Jearim came and took the ark of the Lord, and brought it into the house of ⚓Abinadab on the hill, and ⚓consecrated Eleazar his son to keep the ark of the Lord.

Samuel Judges Israel

²So it was that the ark remained in Kirjath Jearim a long time; it was there twenty years. And all the house of Israel lamented after the Lord.
³Then Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, “If you ⚓return to the Lord with all your hearts, then⚓put away the foreign gods and the ⚓Ashtoreths from among you, and ⚓prepare your hearts for the Lord, and ⚓serve Him only; and He will deliver you from the hand of the Philistines.” ⁴So the children of Israel put away the ⚓Baals and the Ashtoreths, and served the Lord only.
⁵And Samuel said, ⚓“Gather all Israel to Mizpah, and ⚓I will pray to the Lord for you.” ⁶So they gathered together at Mizpah, ⚓drew water, and poured it out before the Lord. And they ⚓fasted that day, and said there, ⚓“We have sinned against the Lord.” And Samuel judged the children of Israel at Mizpah.
⁷Now when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel had gathered together at Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard of it, they were afraid of the Philistines. ⁸So the children of Israel said to Samuel, ⚓“Do not cease to cry out to the Lord our God for us, that He may save us from the hand of the Philistines.”
⁹And Samuel took a ⚓suckling lamb and offered it as a whole burnt offering to the Lord. Then ⚓Samuel cried out to the Lord for Israel, and the Lord answered him. ¹⁰Now as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel. ⚓But the Lord thundered with a loud thunder upon the Philistines that day, and so confused them that they were overcome before Israel. ¹¹And the men of Israel went out of Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, and drove them back as far as below Beth Car. ¹²Then Samuel ⚓took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen, and called its name Ebenezer, saying, “Thus far the Lord has helped us.”
¹³⚓So the Philistines were subdued, and they ⚓did not come anymore into the territory of Israel. And the hand of the Lord was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel. ¹⁴Then the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron to Gath; and Israel recovered its territory from the hands of the Philistines. Also there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.
¹⁵And Samuel ⚓judged Israel all the days of his life. ¹⁶He went from year to year on a circuit to Bethel, Gilgal, and Mizpah, and judged Israel in all those places. ¹⁷But ⚓he always returned to Ramah, for his home was there. There he judged Israel, and there he ⚓built an altar to the Lord.
