Eliphaz Accuses Job of Folly

¹Then ⚓Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said:
²“Should a wise man answer with empty knowledge,
And fill himself with the east wind?
³Should he reason with unprofitable talk,
Or by speeches with which he can do no good?
⁴Yes, you cast off fear,
And restrain prayer before God.
⁵For your iniquity teaches your mouth,
And you choose the tongue of the crafty.
⁶⚓Your own mouth condemns you, and not I;
Yes, your own lips testify against you.
⁷“Are you the first man who was born?
⚓Or were you made before the hills?
⁸⚓Have you heard the counsel of God?
Do you limit wisdom to yourself?
⁹⚓What do you know that we do not know?
What do you understand that is not in us?
¹⁰⚓Both the gray-haired and the aged are among us,
Much older than your father.
¹¹Are the consolations of God too small for you,
And the word spoken gently with you?
¹²Why does your heart carry you away,
And what do your eyes wink at,
¹³That you turn your spirit against God,
And let such words go out of your mouth?
¹⁴“What⚓is man, that he could be pure?
And he who is born of a woman, that he could be righteous?
¹⁵⚓If God puts no trust in His saints,
And the heavens are not pure in His sight,
¹⁶⚓How much less man, who is abominable and filthy,
⚓Who drinks iniquity like water!
¹⁷“I will tell you, hear me;
What I have seen I will declare,
¹⁸What wise men have told,
Not hiding anything received⚓from their fathers,
¹⁹To whom alone the land was given,
And ⚓no alien passed among them:
²⁰The wicked man writhes with pain all his days,
⚓And the number of years is hidden from the oppressor.
²¹Dreadful sounds are in his ears;
⚓In prosperity the destroyer comes upon him.
²²He does not believe that he will ⚓return from darkness,
For a sword is waiting for him.
²³He ⚓wanders about for bread, saying, ‘Where is it?’
He knows ⚓that a day of darkness is ready at his hand.
²⁴Trouble and anguish make him afraid;
They overpower him, like a king ready for battle.
²⁵For he stretches out his hand against God,
And acts defiantly against the Almighty,
²⁶Running stubbornly against Him
With his strong, embossed shield.
²⁷“Though⚓ he has covered his face with his fatness,
And made his waist heavy with fat,
²⁸He dwells in desolate cities,
In houses which no one inhabits,
Which are destined to become ruins.
²⁹He will not be rich,
Nor will his wealth ⚓continue,
Nor will his possessions overspread the earth.
³⁰He will not depart from darkness;
The flame will dry out his branches,
And ⚓by the breath of His mouth he will go away.
³¹Let him not ⚓trust in futile things, deceiving himself,
For futility will be his reward.
³²It will be accomplished ⚓before his time,
And his branch will not be green.
³³He will shake off his unripe grape like a vine,
And cast off his blossom like an olive tree.
³⁴For the company of hypocrites will be barren,
And fire will consume the tents of bribery.
³⁵⚓They conceive trouble and bring forth futility;
Their womb prepares deceit.”

¹Lời của Ê-li-pha, người xứ Thê-man:
^2,3Đã mang danh hiền triết,
Sao lập luận ngu khờ?
Óc ông thật rỗng tuếch⚓
Lòng dạ quá khô khan,⚓
Lời ông toàn luẩn quẩn!
⁴Sao không sợ Thượng Đế,
Không chiêm ngưỡng Chân Thần?
⁵Tội lỗi dạy ông nói,
Làm lưỡi ông gian ngoa.
⁶Miệng ông lên án ông,
Môi ông tự tố cáo.
⁷Phải chăng ông xuất hiện trước tiên trên mặt đất,
Trước cả khi đồi núi hình thành?
⁸Ông nghe được huyền vi Tạo Hóa,
Và riêng ông thâu tóm hết khôn ngoan?
⁹Có chi ông biết mà chúng tôi mù tịt,
Có gì ông hiểu, chúng tôi lại u mê?
¹⁰So tuổi tác, so đầu bạc trắng,
Có người đây già hơn quý phụ thân,
¹¹Sao ông coi nhẹ bàn tay Ngài an ủi,⚓
Và lời dịu dàng của Chúa dạy khuyên?
¹²Vì sao lòng ông bấn loạn
Và mắt ông long sòng sọc?
¹³Đến nỗi tâm linh ông chống lại Chân Thần,
Và nói lên những lời hằn học.
¹⁴Loài người là gì mà được tẩy thanh,
Con người nữ là ai mà trở thành công chính?
¹⁵Ngay các thánh cũng không được Ngài tín nhiệm.
Dưới mắt Ngài, bầu trời cũng bẩn nhơ.
¹⁶Huống hồ con người ô uế cả tâm thân
Uống gian ác mình như nước lã!
¹⁷Ông có nghe thì tôi mới trình bày
Chỉ xin nói những gì tôi chứng kiến,
¹⁸Cũng là điều các hiền nhân xác nhận,
Và tổ tiên họ cũng đã lưu truyền⚓
¹⁹(Không bao giờ thấp thoáng bóng ngoại nhân,
Trên đất nước các vị này riêng hưởng):
²⁰Kẻ gian ác suốt đời luôn sầu khổ,
Tuổi càng cao càng chồng chất đớn đau.
²¹Tai thường nghe những tiếng dữ dằn
Giữa cảnh thái bình, bỗng nhiên lâm nạn⚓
²²Sợ chỗ tối, cho rằng mình khó thoát
Kẻ cầm gươm sẵn sàng chờ ám hại.
²³Lúc nào cũng chạy gạo lang thang,
Cảm biết ngày tăm tối gần kề.
²⁴Khiếp sợ vì đau buồn trong cảnh gian nan
Bị tiến công tư bề thọ địch
^25,26Vì kẻ ấy đưa tay ra chống cự,
Mang thuẫn khiên đòi xông đánh Chân Thần.
²⁷Che phủ mặt mình bằng lớp mỡ
Bọc hông mình với tấm mỡ phồng căng
²⁸Nó sinh sống nơi thị thành hoang phế.
Trong nhà tiêu điều chẳng có cư dân,
Nhà chờ đổ sụp thành đống điêu tàn.
²⁹Dù có của, cũng không bền giữ,
Chẳng bao giờ hưởng cảnh giàu sang,
Tài sản dồn chứa, phút chốc tiêu tan.
³⁰Bị lửa đốt tiêu bao chồi lộc,
Chẳng hề thoát được cảnh tối tăm,
Công trình sự nghiệp như mây khói,
Chính bản thân cũng bị Chúa thổi văng
³¹Kẻ khờ dại, đừng cậy điều hư ảo.
Rốt cuộc lại chỉ là công dã tràng.
³²Chưa mãn đời, trời đã báo ứng;
Cành lá chưa xanh, đã úa vàng
³³Trái nó rơi rụng như trái nho non,
Hoa tả tơi như hoa ô-liu tan tác.
³⁴Kẻ vô đạo làm gì có hậu tự,
Lều người hối lộ, lửa đốt ra tro.
³⁵Tội ác cưu mang, sinh điều tàn bạo,
Tâm địa đê hèn, bày kế gian manh.
